- Hey friends, today I'm gonna share a recipe with y'all
0:04
that might be the best cake you ever put in your mouth.
0:08
Starting with a cake mix.
0:11
Well, the gooey butter cakes too,
0:13
but that's like a bar dessert.
0:16
I am gonna share with y'all a recipe that I've had
0:20
for years, and it was just published in one of my,
0:24
in Paula Deen magazine.
0:26
I don't know which issue, do you Teresa?
0:28
- [Teresa] No ma'am.
0:29
- Okay, but you can, there's several places.
0:31
- [Teresa] All you have to do is gone onto Paula Deen,
0:33
it'll be on Pauladeen.com.
0:35
- Okay.
0:36
- [Teresa] But it's also on the Paula Deen magazine.
0:38
- Okay, pauladeen.com or Paula,
0:41
Cooking with Paula Deen magazine.
0:44
So we're gonna start
0:48
with one box
0:52
of a classic just white cake.
0:57
All right, I've got my cake mix.
0:59
I'm gonna add a three.
1:04
Let's see, a three ounce package of strawberry jello
1:10
and I pulled out a half a teaspoon
1:13
of the strawberry jello because in the frosting recipe,
1:18
it calls for a half a teaspoon of strawberry extract.
1:24
Well, we couldn't find strawberry extract.
1:26
So we got in touch with a Baker,
1:28
a young lady that has a bakery here in town
1:33
and she says she just uses the jello,
1:37
where it called for strawberry extract,
1:39
so that's why I held that out.
1:41
So I've got four eggs.
1:45
A half a cup of oil.
1:51
Like a, oh my gosh, that had water in it, didn't it.
1:54
I didn't see it but that's all right,
1:57
'cause this is a dumping beet.
1:59
So what just went in there
2:01
was a fourth of a cup of water with that egg.
2:04
That's how good my eyes are y'all, I can't see diddly squat.
2:08
Like I used to be able to.
2:11
So we're gonna put, like I say,
2:13
put all the ingredients in this bowl
2:16
and then we gonna beat it for two minutes.
2:27
And then we gonna divide them up between two cake pans.
2:34
So y'all won't be able to hear what I'm saying
2:38
because I'm gonna be doing this for two minutes.
2:42
So if y'all wanna give me two minutes, that's good.
2:46
Okay, y'all, I beat this up, put all the ingredients
2:49
in the bowl at the same time, beat it for two minutes.
2:53
Now, ordinarily I would line my cake pans
2:56
with parchment paper, just to make sure they don't stick
3:02
but my parchment paper is in storage
3:06
along with everything else.
3:08
So I'm gonna use the spray that also contains flour
3:12
and I hope they don't stick.
3:15
These were my pans, gosh, years and years ago.
3:21
We came out with some bakeware
3:25
and these are the best.
3:32
Cookie sheets, baking dishes,
3:35
they were of the highest quality and I'm still using them
3:39
and it's probably been 15 years.
3:44
12 to 15 years since they were introduced
3:48
and of course you can't get them anymore
3:50
but I'm so thrilled to have mine still.
3:54
But I am gonna spray it good.
3:57
(bottle spraying)
4:02
'cause I want this cake to come out nice, nice, nice.
4:10
(bottle spraying)
4:13
I had some old cake pans the other day.
4:18
One of my brands, Sullivan asked me
4:21
if I would help him make a carrot cake,
4:25
that's his momma's favorite carrot cake in the world
4:29
was my carrot cake.
4:31
So he came over and I happily make it,
4:34
and I used, I couldn't find these for some reason.
4:39
So I used some that probably came from the grocery store.
4:46
When I went to take Kari's cakes out of there.
4:50
Oh my gosh, it was the biggest mess.
4:53
I had to take my hands and kind of mold those cakes
4:57
back together, all right, now we wanna
5:00
let our layers to be perfectly, you know, the same size.
5:06
So I start by measuring them,
5:11
with a one cup measurer.
5:17
'Cause it...
5:23
Didn't make me happy to pull out cakes
5:25
and one's thin and one's thick.
5:31
So I am kind of peculiar about this.
5:38
The strawberries smell wonderful.
5:43
All right, let's get in there so I can get me one more cup.
5:52
Come on, Paula.
5:57
Okay, almost, uh oh, uh oh.
6:00
It slipped, you know, I've said for years,
6:03
when I come back in my next life,
6:05
I wanna come back as a octopus.
6:09
Wouldn't it be great to have six arms?
6:13
I think it would be wonderful.
6:17
I said I could just see myself staring up at that stove
6:20
and the fryer and the oven and have everything going.
6:28
Okay, so I'm gonna.
6:31
Those should be perfectly, perfectly correct.
6:35
Now I'm just gonna take, clean my bowl out.
6:42
But the rest...
6:47
Okay.
6:52
That's good.
6:57
And that's good.
7:06
Okay, you know like,
7:11
getting all my goodie,
7:13
I wanna get everything that's due for this cake
7:20
and that will get it.
7:21
Now I'm gonna put it in the oven at 350
7:25
and I'm gonna bake it for 30 to 45, 30 to 40 minutes.
7:33
And this one will take a little longer to cook
7:36
because it's just two layers, instead of three.
7:42
So I like to, once I get my cake pans loaded,
7:47
I like to just drop them
7:51
and you can see the air bubbles coming to the top.
7:58
Okay, kids, the cake is out of the oven
8:04
and I want you to see how beautiful they came out.
8:10
Perfect, and you notice it's on a dinner plate.
8:19
That is because Teresa is gonna take this cake to Tybee,
8:23
she's got a bunch of girlfriends coming in
8:25
for the weekend and they gonna be out there on the beach,
8:29
raising all kinds of sand and drinking.
8:32
And you know you will.
8:35
- Oh my goodness. - And eating.
8:36
And y'all will have a ball.
8:39
I'm jealous I'm not going,
8:40
but I won't entrust her with one of my crystal cake.
8:46
- [Teresa] I don't blame you, I don't blame you.
8:48
I don't trust myself anyway.
8:50
- 'Cause you girls y'all don't need to
8:53
have to worry about anything just.
8:54
- [Teresa] Well I'm gonna tell them I made the cake.
8:57
- Well you did, Teresa made this cake y'all.
9:03
And I've got mine in the oven,
9:06
but rather than sitting around, having to wait
9:09
on that one to bake and cool.
9:14
Teresa done help me out.
9:16
- [Teresa] So we're all bonusing,
9:17
every one of us gets a cake. - Yes.
9:19
Yes, yes. - You get a cake,
9:20
you get a cake, you get a cake.
9:21
- Everybody gets a cake.
9:25
And this is truly one of the most wonderful cakes.
9:28
Do you like strawberry cake, Eddie?
9:29
- [Eddie] Yes.
9:32
- I foresee Eddie having a half a cake
9:35
and Paula having a half a cake.
9:38
All right, now I'm putting
9:43
a half a stick of butter in my bowl.
9:49
And one eight ounce package of cream cheese.
9:56
And let's see, I've got a little.
10:00
Oh, here it is, I couldn't see it behind the bowl.
10:03
And remember the frosting called for strawberry extract,
10:07
which I don't have.
10:09
So I'm gonna use a half a teaspoon
10:12
of the strawberry gelatin.
10:15
So was the first thing we're gonna do is take our butter
10:18
and our cream cheese.
10:19
(mixer whirring)
10:21
And we're gonna whip it
10:23
until it's smooth and well incorporated with each other.
10:27
(bowl clanging)
10:32
Now I'm gonna add that half a teaspoon
10:37
of the strawberry gelatin.
10:42
And I've got a fourth of a cup of strawberries
10:48
that we held out from our frozen pureed strawberries.
10:54
Thank you, Teresa. - You're welcome.
10:57
- [Paula] You keep that eye on me, girl.
10:58
- [Teresa] I am.
11:03
- You know, as we start getting older, it's funny.
11:06
We almost revert back to our youth, don't we?
11:11
In some ways. - Well, you've got
11:13
a long way to.
11:14
- Yeah. - To be with,
11:15
I mean, this isn't your normal environment.
11:18
- No, listen, I'm so out of place here.
11:22
I'm so thankful to be here, y'all, don't get me wrong.
11:27
This was one of the biggest blessings,
11:30
for Bobby to have this house.
11:33
But when everything he got's in storage,
11:36
it's just hard.
11:39
- [Teresa] Well the kitchens your safe place.
11:41
- Oh yes.
11:42
- [Teresa] It turned out really be set up.
11:44
- That's right, but you know,
11:45
it's been a wonderful little kitchen, it really has
11:49
and I've learned how to cook on.
11:52
- [Teresa] Oh that's right.
11:53
- [Paula] Yes, oh no.
11:56
If you'll just help me tell what it is.
11:58
- [Teresa] What's it called then, induction?
12:01
- Induction yes.
12:05
All right, this was three stops.
12:09
- [Teresa] That had seven cups.
12:10
- Seven cups. - Of confectioners.
12:12
- [Paula] This is gonna make enough icing, y'all,
12:15
we could make some cupcakes that go with it,
12:18
but you know what, I hate standard cake with skimpy icing.
12:21
- [Teresa] I was gonna say, you usually are like.
12:24
- I don't like that.
12:27
'cause I like a little cake with a bug of icing.
12:34
Okey dokey, now at this point,
12:38
you can see it's just a very light pink
12:40
because all we have is fourth of a cup
12:43
of the pureed strawberries and a half a teaspoon
12:47
of strawberry gelatin.
12:49
So if you wanted to make this a more vibrant pink,
12:55
you could always add a little red food color.
13:01
Or you can leave it like this where it's more natural.
13:06
We have some food coloring?
13:07
- [Teresa] I know, I'm in the closet getting it.
13:09
- All right, you wanna squirt?
13:12
- [Teresa] Oh I'm scared.
13:13
- [Paula] Don't be scared.
13:15
Don't be scared, just a drop and it'll be all right.
13:18
Let's see. - A drop at a time.
13:20
- [Paula] Yes, I like doing it very slow.
13:25
- [Teresa] You've taught me you can always add
13:26
but you cannot take away.
13:27
- [Paula] You can't suck that stuff out of there.
13:31
Okay. - Look how beautiful.
13:33
- Aint it beautiful?
13:37
And like I said,
13:41
all of my cake recipes should be that generous
13:46
with the powdered sugar, you know,
13:50
all the carrot cake recipes
13:52
and any of your cake that does
13:57
cream cheese icing.
13:58
- [Eddie] So much is left in the bowl,
14:00
you use seven cups of.
14:01
- I used every bit of it, Eddie.
14:05
All right and how would y'all like to top this off?
14:10
You're taking this one to Tybee with you.
14:14
So how would you like it done?
14:16
- [Teresa] Just what you're doing.
14:17
- Faby Crutcher.
14:22
- [Teresa] So it looks like that I was really skilled,
14:25
so however you wanna make it that.
14:26
- Do you want this down on the plate
14:29
or do you want it up on the cake?
14:31
- [Teresa] I would probably say down on the plate
14:32
so that I can cover it.
14:34
Oh no, up on the cake and that way it'll help keep the.
14:37
- Okay.
14:39
- [Teresa] Don't you think?
14:40
- [Paula] I think.
14:41
- That'll keep. - Any way you want it
14:43
is what I think.
14:46
- [Teresa] That's what's always so good about Paula,
14:47
she wants it to be how you want it, not.
14:51
- This aint about me.
14:57
It's about you and your friends.
15:00
- [Teresa] Well, my friends, I can tell you
15:02
are already saying thank you.
15:05
- As they toast with a strawberry margarita.
15:09
- [Teresa] Probably a prosecco and like a mimosa.
15:13
Like a mimosa, you know champagne and orange juice
15:17
or champagne. - Yeah, yeah.
15:18
- [Teresa] But we might have to find some strawberry juice
15:20
at this point.
15:21
- [Paula] Let's see, how do I want that?
15:26
Maybe like that.
15:29
- You talking to me? - Okay, Teresa.
15:31
There you go, angel. - Yay.
15:34
- All right and I put...
15:38
I put three tooth, tooth, three.
15:42
- Three. - Two did.
15:44
I two put three toothpicks in this cake,
15:48
so hopefully it won't slide off.
