- Hey everybody, today,
0:01
I've got a really great recipe for you.
0:03
I think you're gonna like it.
0:05
My family, and maybe yours too,
0:06
has always been a meat and potatoes kind of family.
0:09
And when you think potatoes,
0:12
you don't always think sweet potatoes,
0:13
especially when you're doing mashed potatoes.
0:16
But today we're gonna do exactly that.
0:18
Mashed sweet potatoes.
0:21
The method is gonna be the same as you would do
0:24
with white potatoes, boiling water, cut your potatoes.
0:28
Let me use a different method than my hands.
0:35
Boiling water and the potatoes.
0:37
I've peeled them and cut 'em into sort of rustic chunks.
0:41
I'm gonna boil 'em for 10, 12 minutes until they're soft.
0:46
And then we'll come back to 'em.
0:47
So the beginning is just boiling the potatoes.
0:50
But I'm lucky. My kids have really embraced sweet potatoes.
0:55
We make 'em all kinds of ways.
0:57
I'll cut 'em into rings and cinnamon and salt and bake 'em.
1:04
And the kids really love them.
1:06
They love them baked, like a whole baked sweet potato.
1:11
One of my girls' favorite foods is mashed potatoes.
1:15
And I'm lucky that she has embraced the sweet potato.
1:18
They are full of great vitamins and minerals.
1:22
Anytime you're eating food this color,
1:23
you know you're eating healthily.
1:26
So here we go. My potatoes are in the dutch oven.
1:30
We're just gonna boil 'em for a few minutes.
1:31
Real simple, and we'll come right back.
1:34
So it's hard to believe,
1:35
but it is already Thanksgiving 2025,
1:37
and this is a perfect recipe for it.
1:39
Mashed sweet potatoes,
1:41
will be different than the sweet potato souffle,
1:43
will be different than the baked sweet potatoes.
1:46
So if you wanna be different,
1:47
do mashed sweet potatoes this year.
1:49
I've drained them and I'm gonna put 'em right back
1:52
into my Dutch oven that's still warm.
1:57
And I'm gonna add to that, our butter.
2:01
I'm gonna start with about a half stick.
2:06
And also some cinnamon.
2:10
Start with a quarter teaspoon. I might add more.
2:13
I really do like cinnamon.
2:16
And a few tablespoons of some local honey.
2:21
These are ingredients that go great together.
2:25
They're also ingredients that I might put into my oatmeal
2:28
in the morning, and I sometimes do.
2:32
Oh, I hear Lulu over there, groaning her approval.
2:38
Yeah, three tablespoons of honey.
2:39
So that's not a lot of any of it.
2:44
So if I want to add some more,
2:45
I just might take the liberty.
2:49
All right, so we're gonna go ahead and beat 'em.
2:52
This is a bit obnoxious.
2:54
Why don't we take a break right now,
2:56
and we'll come right back.
2:59
I decided to go the whole stick of butter,
3:01
so mama will be proud. (mixer whirring)
3:05
These look really, really good.
3:10
But to make 'em just a tad creamier, I've added,
3:12
I've decided to add just a little bit
3:14
of half and half to 'em.
3:16
So maybe a tablespoon, maybe a little less.
3:21
Let's cream 'em just a little bit more.
3:24
Add a little bit of half and half.
3:25
Recipe didn't call for it.
3:26
Let's taste them and see how they are.
3:27
They're definitely hearty.
3:34
Mmm. They're very good.
3:38
- [Speaker] Do they need anything more?
3:40
- The honey is light and the cinnamon is light.
3:42
I would do a little bit more.
3:45
So instead of three tablespoons of honey,
3:46
I think I would do four,
3:50
because the honey is really adding something nice,
3:53
but it needs a little bit more of it.
3:56
And I'm gonna give it just a little bit more cinnamon too.
3:59
So, one more time. (mixer whirring)
4:04
Mmm mmm. And that did it.
4:10
They are very, very, very good. Man, is that good?
4:16
So this year for Thanksgiving,
4:20
I think that you ought to do something
4:21
a little bit different,
4:24
and try a mashed sweet potato.
4:29
And I think your guests will love it. My kids will.
4:30
I'm gonna take this to my house. My kids would love this.
4:35
So we veered from the recipe just a bit
4:37
by adding a little bit of half and half.
4:41
And instead of three tablespoons of honey, I used four.
4:44
And the recipe called for a quarter of a teaspoon
4:47
of cinnamon, which is just almost nothing.
4:50
So I added a little bit more cinnamon.
4:52
Now your taste may be different.
4:54
And this will also be nice with a pinch of salt.
4:58
Get that sweet and savory together. But these are wonderful.
5:03
And you know what, just so,
5:05
I mean there's the butter and everything,
5:07
but sweet potatoes are just great for you.
5:13
And again, that color tells you all you need to know.
5:16
Eat the rainbow, right? These things are beautiful.
5:20
And I predicted our Thanksgiving table
5:25
that this bowl will be empty.
5:31
Mashed sweet potatoes for everyone. Happy Thanksgiving.
