- Hey, my dear friends.
0:01
Come on into the kitchen with me.
0:04
You know, I'd like to think of y'all
0:07
as all being on a stool, sitting around this counter,
0:10
and we're having a soda, or a cup of coffee, and laughing,
0:14
and just enjoying one another's company, exchanging stories.
0:21
Well, I know that can never happen.
0:25
Not all of us will fit around that counter, to start with.
0:28
But Eddie gave me a few,
0:33
what would you call these?
0:34
They're not letters, Eddie.
0:36
- [Eddie] Comments.
0:37
- Yeah, more of a comment than anything.
0:43
And these were on my YouTube channel.
0:48
And so, which brings me to...
0:52
Thank y'all all so much for your support.
0:56
And I hope I've been a little bit of comfort to y'all
0:59
that have maybe been quarantined
1:02
and not around your family or your friends
1:06
like you used to be.
1:08
So that was certainly my goal
1:12
for this little Quaran-Deen Cooking show.
1:16
I don't even want to call it a show.
1:17
It's more like,
1:20
help me come up with a word.
1:23
It's more like vignettes or something.
1:26
I mean, some of the recipes are really long,
1:28
and some are real short, just like a recipe is.
1:33
But Eddie just brought these three to my attention
1:37
a few minutes ago.
1:39
This is from Sweet Home, Alabama.
1:43
"Paula, you need to do a livestream one day
1:46
"where you guys can talk with all of us."
1:50
I would not begin to know how to do that, Sweet Home.
1:53
- [Eddie] We'll have to check into it.
1:55
- But yes, Eddie and I will check with our computer guru,
2:02
Big Mike, that works on the property.
2:04
Not Michael Gruver, but another Mike that's part of our team
2:08
that we couldn't do without.
2:10
And then the next one is from Shane.
2:13
Shane asks, "I love to watch these videos.
2:17
"Don't think I've missed one yet."
2:21
Well good, Shane.
2:22
How long do they stay up?
2:24
- [Eddie] Oh, they're up always.
2:25
- They won't ever go-
2:27
- [Theresa] Once they go up, they live.
2:28
- Yay!
2:30
So if you miss a day, you can always go back and find it.
2:33
(cackling) And this last one made me laugh
2:36
because this is from Paul Nunya.
2:41
And for y'all that don't know what Nunya means,
2:45
it means none ya business. (laughing)
2:49
I hadn't heard that expression, Paul.
2:52
- [Eddie] You should see,
2:53
it would take me forever
2:54
to type something the way he typed something.
2:57
It's a lot of detail.
2:59
- He does.
3:00
He's a detail man.
3:03
"I seriously don't know what I'd do without you."
3:08
Well, Paul Nunya, that is so sweet.
3:12
That is so sweet.
3:13
And I hope it's nothing that you have to worry about
3:16
in the near future.
3:17
I hope it's a long way off that you have to worry about
3:21
being without me, but that just touches my heart.
3:26
So I just wanted to take an opportunity,
3:29
and you know, I'm always saying.
3:33
Excuse me.
3:34
Y'all send me one of your favorite recipes,
3:37
or tell me what your grandma used to make for you.
3:41
And believe it or not, I get a lot of recipes.
3:45
And I'm so appreciative of those
3:48
because I love hearing y'all's stories.
3:52
'Cause you know, we all got a story,
3:53
just some people don't ever get to tell them.
3:56
And I appreciate when we can tell your story.
4:01
All right, so the cake I'm making today
4:06
is from Megan Frounfelter.
4:12
F-R-O-U-N-F-E-L-T-E-R.
4:17
Frounfelter.
4:19
And listen, Megan was short and sweet with her words.
4:24
She said, "Hi, Miss Paul Deen.
4:26
"My granny used to make a cake called a pea-picking cake.
4:30
"It was the best cake ever.
4:32
"Was wondering if you have ever made it,
4:34
"and if you would make one on your Quaran-Deen Cooking.
4:39
"Thank you so much, and be blessed."
4:41
Well Megan, I have got a recipe in one of my cookbooks,
4:44
I can't even remember which cookbook it is,
4:47
but the name of mine is pig-picking cake,
4:53
which is very close to pea-picking cake.
4:56
Pea-picking came from Ernie,
5:01
what was Ernie's last name? (snapping)
5:04
From Hee Haw.
5:07
He sang, what song was it?
5:11
♪ Takes a two-ton ♪
5:13
Oh, I can't remember, and I can't sing to start with.
5:16
Ernie.
5:20
It's not Ernie Williams, is it?
5:24
- [Theresa] I can't help you.
5:25
- Ernie Ford.
5:27
Was it Ernie Ford?
5:29
Or was that a car? (laughing)
5:31
Anyway.
5:34
I'm gonna cut this oven down a little bit.
5:39
So I'm sure that y'all can probably tell by my clothes
5:45
that either y'all are thinking, "That damn woman
5:49
"don't never change clothes." (laughing)
5:53
"She has been wearing that for days now."
5:55
Actually, when I come in here in the kitchen
5:57
and shoot these vignettes, and shows,
6:01
I do about five or six in one day.
6:04
So that's why you'll see me for days in the same outfit
6:08
Well, today just feels like it's Grandmother's Day,
6:10
so I'm so excited because in an earlier vignette,
6:14
I made another cake that came from a granny.
6:19
So this one is so simple,
6:22
and I hadn't compared this recipe, Megan,
6:28
with the one in my book, but they would have to be,
6:31
if not identical, they would have to be very, very similar.
6:37
So we're gonna start with a yellow cake mix.
6:43
And you know what?
6:44
You really don't even have to have a mixer,
6:46
an electric mixer for this,
6:48
but I'm gonna use one just to beat up my oil.
6:54
I think that was a half a cup of oil.
6:55
Let's see what Megan said.
7:00
This is a real moist cake, y'all.
7:04
Yeah, half a cup of oil.
7:06
So I'm gonna just use my little hand mixer.
7:13
Make sure I get this mixed up real good,
7:15
but like I said, I could certainly do this with a whisk,
7:20
and do it by hand.
7:21
(mixer rattling)
7:25
But I wanna make sure it's mixed up real good.
7:31
And our last ingredient that's gonna go in this, y'all,
7:34
is Mandarin orange.
7:37
Mandarin oranges.
7:40
And Megan tells us to only pour off half of the juice.
7:46
So that's what we've done.
7:49
And because these beaters would just tear the heck
7:52
out of those little fragile orange sections,
7:57
I'm gonna just fold them in.
8:02
After I get this mixed up real well.
8:17
(mixer slows)
8:23
There we go.
8:26
So just gonna fold that right in.
8:32
Because see, the only...
8:35
We didn't have any milk, or buttermilk,
8:38
or water to make that cake with.
8:42
So we really needed that liquid from the oranges.
8:48
And I do want y'all to be able to see these
8:52
when you cut into your cake.
8:56
Beautiful.
9:00
So that's it.
9:02
All right.
9:03
Megan said put it in three pans.
9:05
She didn't tell me which size, or anything,
9:07
so usually I make a nine-inch cake.
9:12
But these eight-inch pans were so handy,
9:16
I said, "I'm just gonna make it an eight-inch pan."
9:20
So I always use my measuring spoons
9:24
to try to get my cakes perfectly even.
9:31
So if I measure the batter,
9:35
then I know they're all gonna be the same size.
9:48
Those orange pieces look pretty in there, don't they, Eddie?
9:50
- [Eddie] Yes.
9:58
- See, just stirring those little oranges
10:03
wants to break them down.
10:09
- [Eddie] You said you have made something like this?
10:11
- [Paula] Oh yeah.
10:12
But like I said, we'd have to, oh, start there.
10:16
That one's got a lot of oranges in it.
10:21
- [Eddie] Do the oranges dry out as they cook?
10:25
- Eddie, I don't remember.
10:26
I don't even know if I used Mandarin oranges.
10:33
I don't remember. (chuckling)
10:43
All right.
10:46
I hope those are pretty close to even.
10:51
You know, when we get done,
10:55
I don't think any of my cookbooks are down here.
10:57
So we'll just have to go
11:03
on the computer and pull up Paula Deen's Pig-Picking Cake
11:08
and see how much alike they really are.
11:14
Because like I said, they could be straight identical.
11:17
I don't know.
11:20
But, I sure do appreciate you
11:22
sending in your version, Megan,
11:25
'cause there's always another way to do everything.
11:31
This one, this pan looks a little lighter to me.
11:37
But you know what?
11:37
I'm not gonna worry about it.
11:40
I'm gonna put these in a 325 degree oven.
11:47
No butt shots, Eddie.
11:49
No butt shots! (laughing)
11:51
- [Theresa] Paula, remember, it's 350,
11:53
but for your oven it's 325.
11:55
- No, for these, no.
11:56
- [Theresa] Oh, oh, little ones.
11:58
- I thought it said 325, Teresa.
12:00
- [Theresa] Did it?
12:03
(both laughing)
12:05
I think you're right, now that you're saying it,
12:06
especially with that looking-
12:08

- [Theresa] With those wonky eyeglasses,
12:11
I'm gonna go with you.
12:12
- Hey, listen, I do what I have to do to be able to see.
12:14
(laughing)
12:16
Okay, Jennifer.
12:18
Your pea-picking cakes have cooled down nicely,
12:25
so now it's time for us to make the frosting for them.
12:30
And this comes from Megan, as I said early, Frounfelter.
12:34
Frounfelter. (laughing)
12:36
I'm sorry, Jennifer.
12:38
I mean, Megan.
12:39
I was just talking to Jennifer.
12:41
So Megan says, now here's where I did something
12:45
a little different, Megan.
12:50
It called for one nine-ounce tube of whipped topping.
12:54
Well, I personally don't care
12:56
for the frozen whipped topping.
12:57
It's great if you're trying to cut calories
13:00
or something like that.
13:01
I mean, it's better than nothing
13:03
if you're looking for something that's sweet,
13:05
But I whipped my own fresh cream,
13:08
my whipping cream, and I mixed it.
13:12
I think I probably used maybe a cup and a half
13:14
of whipping cream, and put in, oh gosh,
13:18
maybe a quarter of a cup of sugar.
13:24
So I sweetened it up because, you know,
13:26
that frozen whipped is sweet.
13:28
So that needed to be sweet, too.
13:31
So, she tells us to add one small package
13:39
of vanilla Jello.
13:42
Now this is gonna make all this tighten up
13:46
and stay on that cake.
13:49
And it calls for one, let me see if it says an ounce.
13:54
Just one large can of crushed pineapple, drained.
13:58
And you wanna make sure you drain it real good,
14:01
because if it's too soupy, it won't stay on your cake.
14:07
We'll let Michael.
14:10
So we just gonna stir all that together.
14:14
- [Theresa] It's interesting how Michael always comes around
14:16
when he sweets are coming out of the-
14:17
- [Paula] When it's cakes.
14:19
- Yeah. (Paula laughing)
14:20
Do you have a sense?
14:21
Something speaks to you from...
14:25
(Paula laughing)
14:26
- [Michael] Sweets for the sweet.
14:27
- [Theresa] Hey.
14:29
- Right. (laughing)
14:35
You know what I may do, y'all?
14:40
Megan just said frost the cake.
14:49
But you know what?
14:51
It might be easier, and I like lots of frosting, y'all.
14:57
Now I'm gonna put a drop of frosting right there,
15:01
so that kinda glue my first cake down
15:06
and not let it slide around.
15:08
Isn't that beautiful?
15:10
Remember we used that can of Mandarin oranges.
15:14
So this is what I may be thinking, y'all,
15:18
'cause like I said, I like a lotta icing.
15:23
And I think it would be right prudent.
15:26
Oh.
15:26
(utensils clattering)
15:30
You ever done that, Michael?
15:31
Gone to slam that door, and a knife be sticking up?
15:39
- [Michael] Yup.
15:40
(telephone ringing)
15:43
- I know that's a sales call, don't y'all?
15:45
- [Michael] Might be your last chance, Eddie.
15:47
- Last chance for that warranty.
15:50
Oh no.
15:52
Hello.
15:53
(buzzer sounding)
15:54
(dog barking)
15:55
Hello.
15:55
(dog barking)
15:58
That was the gate. (chuckling)
16:01
(voice drowned out) With you, Mikey?
16:05
Ooh, and look at that.
16:08
Mm mm, I shoulda sprayed that waxed paper.
16:14
All right.
16:23
See how that pudding got that whipping cream so thick?
16:32
On this.
16:35
I can't stand it if I don't have enough icing,
16:39
so I'm wondering if may be I could just get away with...
16:43
- [Theresa] Doing the filling?
16:44
- [Paula] Doing the sides.
16:46
- [Theresa] And not the top?
16:47
- [Paula] I meant the top.
16:48
- [Theresa] Yeah.
16:49
I would just do fillings.
16:52
- [Paula] Yeah, cause I like a lot of in-between.
16:55
- [Theresa] And I was gonna say, that wasn't...
16:58
The tub wouldn't have given you any more
17:00
than what you're doing right now.
17:01
- [Paula] No, no, I don't think so.
17:03
- [Theresa] So you really coulda doubled this recipe
17:05
in order to cover the whole cake.
17:07
- [Paula] I could have, yes, to just make sure.
17:09
Like I said, to me, the best part of a cake
17:12
is having plenty of good old icing.
17:17
- [Theresa] I'm with you.
17:18
Especially when it's whipped cream.
17:18

That's a big cake. (cackling)
18:01

18:07
Oh yeah. (chuckling)
18:16
I always get nervous if my icing
18:20

I have had to stop in the middle of making a cake
18:30
and make more icing.
18:40

18:53
It doesn't look weird?
18:55
- [Eddie] Mm mm.
18:58

19:01
- Yeah, it does, doesn't it?
19:04
Thank you, Megan.
19:05
- [Theresa] Yeah, can you decorate the sides?
19:07
You can just put some oranges or things on the side.
19:09
It would be real pretty.
19:10
- [Paula] Yeah.
19:13
Oh Megan.
19:16
- [Theresa] Do we get to cut into it?
19:18
- [Paula] Yeah, we gonna cut it.
19:23
We can't do that to Megan and not taste it.
19:30
- [Theresa] I don't think people realize in real television
19:32
you always have all the things made up,
19:35
but we could never eat any of it
19:36
because you had to save it for beauties.
19:39
- [Paula] Had to save it, yes.
19:41
- [Theresa] So it was just torture.
19:44

Paula, and put it back again.
19:55
- [Paula] Yup. (laughing)
19:58
- [Michael] You ever seen her do it?
19:59
- [Theresa] Only she could get away with that.
20:02
- [Michael] Yeah, let's see how she does it.
20:04
That's the way you get it out.
20:07
- [Theresa] Well, maybe we'll show the viewing audience that
20:09
one day, but that's not today's...
20:14
- Well, she could do it.
20:15
- It looks a little funny to me because
20:19
I know that icing is supposed to be on the side.
20:22
But we won't know it when it's going down our belly.
20:29
So let's cut it!

22:55
