- Come on in the kitchen y'all,
0:01
I hope that you've enjoyed
0:04
our week of Halloween.
0:07
I know I've had fun
0:11
thinking about children and Halloweens in the past.
0:15
One of the funniest Halloweens, I can remember,
0:20
I dressed up like a witch and I had some kind of makeup.
0:24
It was a mask that you put on your face and it was green.
0:29
And then you wash it off.
0:30
Well I put that all over my face.
0:33
In fact, I've actually got pictures of it.
0:39
And I'd scare the kids so bad, because,
0:44
I had a laugh that sounded very witch-like.
0:51
And they were afraid to come up to the door.
0:53
And I was with my neighbor, Cynthia,
0:57
and we had,
0:59
seems like we had some dry ice to make our brew.
1:03
So the little children would
1:05
just scared out of their bridges. (laughs)
1:08
And we had so much fun with those kids.
1:12
So what I'm doing this time y'all I have,
1:16
What?
1:17
What are y'all doing?
1:18
Ganging up on Max?
1:21
I know y'all are, don't.
1:25
Please don't,
1:28
poor little Max, he gets a tail end of the,
1:34
of that fight.
1:36
All right.
1:39
So I have made this snake so many times,
1:43
and when I've made it in the past-
1:46
- [Eddie] Actually, yeah.
1:47
Tell them what you're making.
1:48
Oh, I hadn't told you make I'm making.
1:51
In the past, I've always used two cans of Crescent rolls
1:57
because I'm making that snake,
2:01
and this one is gonna be poisonous snake .
2:05
Or at least that is what we're gonna tell everybody
2:08
and see who's brave enough to eat
2:10
some of our snakes sandwich.
2:13
(laughs loudly)
2:17
So, I have pinched it all together.
2:21
And this is gonna be a short snake.
2:24
'Cause that's all I can do with him is a short snake.
2:27
- [Eddie] Garden snake.
2:28
- A garden snake, yeah. (laughs)
2:32
Eddie is very, very artistic.
2:36
He graduated from SCAD,
2:39
which is one of the finest art schools
2:44
in the Eastern United States.
2:47
So Eddie's very, very smart.
2:51
Right, I'm just gonna kinda rub that
2:55
mustard around.
2:56
You know, I've told y'all for years,
2:59
our best kitchen tools are God given.
3:03
And that's these.
3:06
You sure do have to wash them a lot though.
3:12
Okie doke.
3:14
As I told you we're making a snake sandwich
3:18
and we are gonna put
3:21
our favorite meats in our sandwich,
3:25
which is ham.
3:30
And now you remember kids,
3:32
you can put what ever, ever
3:35
your favorite sandwich meat is.
3:39
And look at these, I thought this would be neat
3:43
to just put these cheeses just right down the center.
3:49
And now we're gonna come in with baloney,
3:55
and these are things slices of baloney.
3:58
And these are the, and my husband Michael,
4:01
just adores baloney.
4:03
He likes it fried, on white bread and mayonnaise.
4:08
And I can't lie, I do too.
4:13
But I won't bite down your onions on my,
4:15
what are y'all doing?
4:17
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
4:21
Hey, hey.
4:25
Are they hurting Max?
4:27
Eddie, look at him.
4:30
Look at them.
4:31
- [Eddie] Go on and pick the little troublemaker hun.
4:35
- Yeah, look at them Eddie.
4:37
- [Teresa] She's just a puppy.
4:39
- [Eddie] This would be the troublemaker, Ms. Loo Loo.
4:45
- I swear, I think she is.
4:47
The littlest.
4:48
- [Teresa] You can watch.
4:50
- All right, this looks very, very good to me.
4:55
So what we're gonna do now,
4:59
is we're gonna put our snake together.
5:04
And we're going to try to keep those perforated openings.
5:09
we're gonna try to keep them closed.
5:12
All right, pinch, pinch, pinch, pinch pinch.
5:19
All right.
5:24
So we've got the,
5:29
the motion of the
5:32
snake going.
5:33
You know what Teresa,
5:36
since Eddie is so artistic,
5:40
and I have made this snake a thousand times.
5:43
You know what?
5:44
I would love to see what an artist,
5:46
hand artists would do this.
5:48
Would you trade places with Eddie?
5:48
- [Teresa] Oh, I vote yes on that one.
5:50
- Come here, Eddie.
5:52
Let's get our money's worth from that education you got.
5:56
(laughs)
5:58
- [Teresa] I just hope that I don't shake.
6:00
(laughs)
6:01
- Well that's all right,
6:02
we'll check this one - [Teresa] Well Eddie.
6:04
- What are we doing? - [Teresa] You're on show.
6:05
- You got to make your snake.
6:08
- Okay.
6:08
- Now this is a picture of the snake
6:10
that I've made in the past.
6:12
And basically he looks the same every time.
6:14
So got to have a head, you gotta have a tail.
6:18
Now I started out with this snake being poisonous.
6:22
So you'll have to decide on your colors.
6:26
- All right.
6:26
- [Teresa] He's taking you to the friendly snake,
6:28
the green snake.
6:29
- Well you know what I wanna make one day,
6:31
I'm gonna have to figure out how to do this kids,
6:34
but I want to make a sweet snake.
6:38
- A sweet?
6:39
- A sweet snake.
6:46
All right, I'm assuming that you wanna use these,
6:48
for eyeballs, like I've done in the past.
6:54
- I've seen a lot of snakes on the yard here this year.
6:57
This seemed to be like a really
7:01
exciting year for
7:02
all kinds of snakes in the year.
7:03
- [Teresa] I call them hazard pay.
7:06
- Which I didn't collect.
7:07
(laughing)
7:08
- [Teresa] I would call that hazard pay.
7:11
- I need hazard pay too.
7:12
(laughing)
7:14
- And some of them would scare you down.
7:17
- Oh yeah. - And not let you
7:17
cross the path.
7:18
- I know, there's a thousand snakes in this yard,
7:22
but I have never seen a poisonous one.
7:24
But you know where there is poison snakes,
7:28
out at Tabby
7:30
in the sand. - I saw that in the news.
7:33
- Oh my gosh, somebody filmed with a camera.
7:36
They caught a huge rattlesnake,
7:39
you know, gliding over that hot sand to get to something,
7:45
I don't know what.
7:45
- [Teresa] That kinda looks like a fish right now Eddie.
7:47
- It does.
7:48
(laughs loudly)
7:51
- [Paula] Come on, Eddie, you can do it.
7:52
- [Teresa] I mean, I have faith in you.
7:54
- You can do it, honey.
7:57
- [Teresa] Well, come in onto the side you see-
7:59
- I need a fork.
8:00
- A fork?
8:01
- [Teresa] And he let him see-
8:03
- [Paula] I will get you a fork.
8:06
Or you can get your own fork.
8:10
I'm fixing to make you a forked tongue for your snake.
8:14
- Okay, so these are for the food color in here?
8:15
- Yeah, that's for the food coloring,
8:17
and that's to just make it shiny, I think,
8:21
I can't remember.
8:22
- [Teresa] Paula, I think he needs three little bowls
8:24
or whatever to pin the color. - We've got them.
8:26
Yeah we've got them.
8:29
- So these just,
8:32
split the egg up.
8:34
- Yeah.
8:38
- [Teresa] Well, as we can tell,
8:39
Eddie has not done the snake with us.
8:41
- I have not done the snake.
8:42
- I know,
8:43
and I love somebody new doing it.
8:46
- And you know, we did,
8:47
I think we did this in the Halloween party that weekend?
8:50
- [Teresa] We did. - [Paula] Yes we did.
8:52
- But I was not in the kitchen for that.
8:54
(laughing)
8:56
- [Teresa] We decorate,
8:57
and had everybody that came. - Well I have found that,
8:58
Eddie's talents are immeasurable y'all.
9:03
'Cause sometimes I'll come in I'm so tired
9:06
and I'm about, "Oh God, I got to fix supper."
9:08
Eddie will have supper cooked.
9:11
I mean this man is add up with talent.
9:16
- But I'm a recipe follower though.
9:18
- And that's all right, that's all right.
9:20
I've got my recipe right here.
9:23
You just didn't read it, no did you?
9:25
- No, I didn't know I was going to be doing this.
9:26
- [Teresa] Okay Eddie, I'm coming in on your end.
9:31
- My snake fish.
9:36
- See if you had a long one, it would be easy,
9:39
easier to twist and...
9:43
But that looks pretty good Eddie.
9:45
- [Teresa] That head is starting to look really good.
9:47
- [Paula] I'm telling you.
9:50
All right, you need some cloves for his nostrils.
9:53
- I got it,
9:54
- [Paula] Oh, you do got them? - Yeah, I got one right here.
9:56
- [Paula] Oh yeah.
9:58
I'll take them out for you.
10:00
- [Teresa] And that's just a little food coloring
10:03
going in with some egg yolk.
10:06
- [Paula] 'Cause it goes on smoother
10:08
than trying to just use straight-
10:11
- [Teresa] It bakes kinda on and gives it its glazes.
10:15
- I realized over the years that that wasn't necessarily.
10:18
The easiest way to get your pretty paint though and,
10:23
is this going to be a coral snake?
10:25
- I'm trying to think about some of the ones that I've seen.
10:31
- [Teresa] He's thinking on his feet,
10:32
let him work.
10:33
(laughs)
10:34
- All of us next in our yard, which are bucket's full.
10:39
They're dark and some of them have a green stripe in them.
10:45
Which is a grass snake, I think-
10:46
- [Teresa] Well, that's the water they're coming out of the,
10:49
your water area.
10:50
- I don't know where they're coming from,
10:51
but I don't like them.
10:53
- I know they're like right underneath the pine straw,
10:56
'cause the other day,
10:59
Eddie and I was out on the edge of the,
11:05
the walkway
11:07
and Max, all of a sudden he jumped up,
11:11
it was smelling all the pine straw around.
11:18
And it happened so quick y'all.
11:20
All of a sudden,
11:22
Max throws his head down in that pine straw,
11:26
pulls up a snake.
11:29
He was probably this long Teresa.
11:31
- [Teresa] Oh Lord. - He was probably that long.
11:33
And he was big around.
11:35
That's the biggest snake I've ever seen on the property.
11:38
And Max picked him up square in the middle.
11:41
Well, I screamed bloody murder,
11:44
and it scared Max so bad
11:46
he dropped it like it was a hot potato.
11:49
And that snake took off.
11:51
- I know I've stepped on one coming down the cottage-
11:56
- [Teresa] Eddie let me show them,
11:57
'cause this is really cool
11:58
how you got the little face thing going.
12:00
- [Paula] Yes.
12:03
I knew that Eddie could do this so beautifully.
12:09
And I love seeing other people's interpretations.
12:15
He's looking like an alligator.
12:17
- [Teresa] I was gonna say Paula,
12:18
there was a contest, I'm not so sure.
12:21
- [Paula] Oh, I know Eddie-
12:22
- [Teresa] Thank goodness we don't.
12:29
And this is a cold thing.
12:30
This can actually be something you could do as a family
12:33
and everybody could do one.
12:34
And you could do the smaller ones and have a contest.
12:37
This is kinda like a gingerbread contest at Christmas.
12:40
This is what you do at Halloween.
12:41
- Absolutely.
12:42
And if you only used half a crescent,
12:45
half hand crescent, you could make some baby snakes
12:49
and maybe make those sweet.
12:52
- [Paula] You're dying for that sweet one, aren't you?
12:53
- Uh-huh, I got that sweet on my mind.
12:58
Maybe you have two different reds that you're using,
13:01
don't you Eddie?
13:02
- I have once more of an orange and ones are red.
13:03
- Okay, yeah.
13:04
This looks like it has some yellow in it.
13:09
And Eddie paints beautifully as well.
13:15
I hadn't seen him play the piano yet.
13:17
- Oh, you know, I wish I could play the piano.
13:19
- You can't play the piano?
13:20
- No, no, I never.
13:22
- I got to see if he got, I thought I saw both of you.
13:26
- Oh, there we go.
13:28
- He's been out there in the yard,
13:31
toting stuff out of the garage.
13:35
- [Teresa] Is he gonna get some eyes or something?
13:37
I'm worried about this little fella,
13:39
not being able to see.
13:40
I would suggest giving him a mouth so he can talk back to
13:44
Burn Hilda. - [Teresa] Exactly.
13:46
(laughs)
13:48
- [Paula] What you think Eddie?
13:49
- [Teresa] I have you two to do that.
13:51
- [Paula] I forgot the program to choose.
13:53
- [Teresa] Oh, look.
13:59
- [Paula] Oh, you're gonna eat,
14:01
well, I cut a toe now.
14:04
- [Teresa] And you're using peppers.
14:06
- [Paula] Yeah.
14:07
Cause you really don't-
14:08
- [Teresa] You're just trying to get into your
14:09
artistic ability. (laughing)
14:11
- [Paula] I was just telling you.
14:13
- [Teresa] I know you find that hard to believe.
14:14
- I'm just saying.
14:16
I'm not saying, I'm just saying
14:22
The one place she never questioned,
14:23
Paula Deen is in the kitchen.
14:26
- And I wouldn't, I wouldn't.
14:30
And I wouldn't.
14:32
You know me, I-
14:34
- [Teresa] I've worked with her
14:34
in the trenches of the restaurants.
14:37
You don't mess with her.
14:38
- [Paula] When I'm working in the kitchen I am serious.
14:43
What do you need Eddie? - [Teresa] Look at this.
14:44
- [Eddie] I think I wanna add some funky chicken,
14:49
to add some...
14:51
- [Paula] Depth to it.
14:55
Oh my goodness.
14:57
- [Teresa] Nice.
14:58
So he's gotten some seasonings out, is what he's done.
15:01
But just has a lot of black pepper corn.
15:04
- [Paula] Yes, it's our funky chicken seasoning
15:07
from the Paula Deen store.
15:09
I think it was.
15:10
- [Teresa] Okay.
15:12
I am impressed Eddie.
15:14
- [Paula] I am impressed too.
15:14
- [Teresa] I can't wait to see it cooked.
15:16
- [Paula] But you got to do his nostrils.
15:18
- [Teresa] Here she goes.
15:19
- [Paula] There is your nostrils.
15:21
- [Eddie] Snakes have nostrils?
15:23
I've never gotten that close to one so.
15:25
- [Paula] Yes they do, they really do.
15:27
- [Teresa] Okay, so this goes into oven at 375?
15:31
- [Paula] Yeah, 350, something like that.
15:34
You just wanna cook it long enough for...
15:39
I know you can't be through,
15:40
you would work on that all afternoon.
15:42
- [Teresa] I was gonna say, we could be here for four hours
15:45
if we keep letting Eddie go.
15:47
So Eddie you're done her friend?
15:49
'Cause I'm hungry.
15:49
- [Paula] No he's not.
15:52
- [Eddie] What else do I gotta do?
15:53
- [Paula] You can do your camera business.
15:55
- [Eddie] What else do I have, is that it?
15:58
- [Teresa] I think it looks fabulous.
16:00
- [Eddie] All right, so in the oven.
16:01
- [Teresa] In the oven it goes.
16:03
- All right Teresa, no back shots.
16:05
(laughing)
16:06
- [Teresa] That's what she always tells you.
16:07
- [Paula] I hate those butt shots.
16:08
- [Teresa] I would not do that to you Eddie.
16:10
Okay 375, and there we go, okay.
16:14
- [Paula] But if you wanted it 375, we can turn it up.
16:16
Burn Hilda. (laughs)
16:20
- [Teresa] Wrap this up so we can come back and get...
16:23
- We can not wrap it up until the snake is done.
16:27
Okay.
16:28
I invited Eddie
16:30
to come in and show me how he would put the steak.
16:35
The snake. (laughs)
16:36
The snake.
16:38
The snake sandwich together.
16:40
I've done it many times, but I wanted to get his take on it
16:44
because he graduated from SCAD,
16:46
which is Savannah College of Art and Design.
16:49
And he's very talented.
16:50
- No, we've never did anything like this.
16:51
(laughing)
16:54
- No, y'all didn't do anything ever this,
16:57
juvenile and on this.
16:59
(laughing)
17:01
Because the children that I share this with,
17:03
I don't think they've been to SCAD yet.
17:07
But they can be on their way.
17:09
So I wanted you to show everybody
17:14
how you would finish up your snake.
17:17
And I tell you it turned out so good Eddie.
17:19
- Well, I think if you were having a party,
17:21
you would trust it up with some leaves.
17:26
I mean, just a few,
17:27
you know, getting them out of your yard and just wash them,
17:30
wash them good.
17:32
- And like he's slithering through the jungle.
17:36
- Or your backyard.
17:38
- Okay, so all over our yard.
17:42
- All right. - What would you like?
17:45
- Let's get him.
17:46
- Okay, let's get him.
17:48
Stab him.
17:50
(laughs)
17:57
Oh my gosh, this is so fun.
17:59
I don't care how many times I make this snake.
18:04
It's always fun.
18:07
And I love the way that you got out our,
18:11
chicken. - Funky chicken.
18:12
- Funky chicken, yes.
18:14
And you gave him some like
18:18
scales, snakes don't we have scales, do they?
18:22
Snakes are real smooth, if you've ever touched a snake.
18:25
They're really smooth.
18:27
- I've never touched a snake.
18:29
- They're real smooth.
18:31
- It's good.
18:32
- Ain't it good? - Yeah.
18:34
- So not only fun,
18:37
but tasty.
18:38
- Yeah, I mean, not necessarily just a kid's snack either.
18:41
I mean, you could do a tailgating thing.
18:43
- Yeah getaway your family.
18:47
Teresa was saying earlier,
18:49
it would be so fun to get your family gathered up
18:53
and have a snake competition.
18:56
And I don't know what the prize would be.
19:02
I have no idea that would be up to you,
19:05
but you know, it really is all about
