0:00
- Happy Halloween, y'all.
0:02
I am fixing to share with y'all a recipe
0:05
that takes me back to my grandmother Paul.
0:08
Every Halloween, she would make her grandchildren
0:13
and her great-grandchildren,
0:15
my two sons were her great grandsons,
0:17
she would make these popcorn balls for them,
0:22
They couldn't wait to get out to her house
0:25
to get that popcorn ball.
0:27
So I'm gonna share that recipe with y'all today,
0:31
and I'm gonna start by adding sugar.
0:35
Is the recipe gonna be linked on this link?
0:37
- [Producer] Yes, ma'am.
0:38
- Or do I need to tell them measurements?
0:41
- [Producer] It'll be on the link.
0:42
- Okay, well, I'm gonna tell them anyway.
0:44
Two cups of sugar, one and a third cup of water,
0:51
one teaspoon of white vinegar,
0:56
and a half a teaspoon of salt.
1:05
Oh, we just have this sitting on the salt. (laughs)
1:12
- What does it say, a half a teaspoon of salt?
1:14
Which that should be about a half a teaspoon.
1:16
And we've got our vanilla extract,
1:18
but we'll stir that in at the last minute.
1:21
And we've got 18 cups of popped corn, popcorn popped.
1:27
So, we're gonna stir this all together.
1:29
I've got to add my white Karo syrup.
1:36
And we're gonna get this all mixed up
1:43
And we're gonna cook it until it reaches a hard boil,
1:56
somewhere right in there.
1:58
So we're just gonna get this stirred up good,
2:00
and then I'm gonna hook our candy thermometer
2:03
to the side of the pan.
2:05
And we're just going to sit back
2:08
and wait for it to get to our magic number,
2:14
These things are so hard to read. (laughs)
2:17
I think 260 will be easier to read.
2:21
All right, in goes our vanilla.
2:23
It took about 20 minutes, y'all.
2:27
My grandma's not here for me to call and ask her,
2:31
but the recipe said cook this over high heat,
2:37
over medium high heat.
2:40
And I mean, it was cooking really, really good.
2:44
So, I think somewhere between medium
2:47
and medium high is good.
2:50
So, we're gonna just now pour our syrup.
2:56
We're not gonna let it cool.
2:59
We're just gonna pour it over all of our popcorn
3:05
And we're gonna have to let this cool for a few minutes,
3:07
because if we tried to form this into (laughs)
3:14
our hands would be bloody.
3:24
I'm trying to get every bit of that syrup out. (laughs)
3:33
I was just saying to the team here,
3:37
I wonder how it would do to put food coloring
3:40
in the syrup and make colored popcorn balls.
3:45
Now I'm just going to kind of stir it just a little bit,
3:48
try to let that syrup go everywhere.
3:55
And it's still hotter than a three dollar pistol,
4:00
So, if you got children in the kitchen on this recipe,
4:09
'cause there's nothing hotter than hot syrup.
4:15
Okay, so I'm gonna let that cool for a minute.
4:18
I kinda got it coated.
4:23
And when it cools down enough for me to pick it up,
4:27
I'm gonna start rubbing it into balls.
4:36
It's feeling like styrofoam.
4:39
(laughs) It's even making that noise that styrofoam makes.
4:45
I mean, a lot of that syrup went straight down
4:47
to the bottom of that pan.
4:54
Okie doke, Teresa, I'm probably gonna need your help.
4:57
Now I'm doing one thing different
4:59
that my grandma did not do.
5:03
Teresa bought some of these cute little
5:08
Halloween candies, but you know what?
5:12
I might should have added them to the syrup.
5:14
- [Teresa] Oh, good idea.
5:16
- You know, 'cause they don't wanna stick.
5:20
And it kind of looks like bugs. (laughs)
5:30
You gonna come in here and help me, Teresa?
5:32
- Because we can't let this get too cool.
5:36
I didn't spray my hands and it's working out all right.
5:42
Oh, I wish Jamie or Bobby was here
5:44
to share their memories with me.
5:52
You can make these balls any size you want to.
6:06
My balls are bigger than Teresa's.
6:15
- [Teresa] Yeah, they're not big enough to--
6:17
- You make little, petite sweet ones.
6:20
And that's plenty big enough for a child.
6:23
I'm used to doing for hungry boys.
6:35
- [Teresa] She'd be proud of us.
6:36
- [Paula] She made these when she really didn't have to.
6:39
Didn't have any children living at home,
6:42
but she was not gonna let Halloween come and go
6:45
without making these for her grandchildren
6:47
and her great grandchildren.
6:49
How you like it, Teresa?
6:50
- [Teresa] My teeth are sticking together.
6:52
- Look at Theresa eating it, Eddie.
7:00
I felt like my teeth had been tied and screwed together.
7:04
- [Teresa] But this takes me back,
7:06
- I know. (laughs) - 'cause I always had these.
7:11
Now that one's got a good bit of the candy in it.
7:14
I think we'll have to work on that concept a little bit.
7:19
So, there you have it, kids.
7:23
If mama has you in the kitchen
7:26
or daddy has you in the kitchen with this one,
7:28
stand back when you're working with that hot syrup,
7:31
because we wouldn't want any of you precious angels
7:37
So y'all have a safe and happy Halloween.
7:41
And I'll be here waiting on y'all when it's all over.
