0:00
- I am standing up here readin' y'all another recipe
0:04
that's being shared by a friend out there,
0:08
her name is Debbie Thornton.
0:13
She has a cookie recipe that her mother-in-law made
0:18
for many years and she passed away last year.
0:21
I'm sorry to hear about your all's loss, Debbie.
0:25
But David goes on to say it was her husband's
0:27
favorite cookie and I would love to share it if you could
0:32
on your YouTube channel.
0:34
So thank you Debbie for wantin' to do that
0:37
and I am so happy to be sharin' it.
0:41
I was at the drug store last night
0:43
and was lookin' on the candy aisle
0:47
and I came up to these orange slices,
0:52
those little orange candies.
0:54
And I thought, "Oh, I love those, I wanna get some!"
0:59
But I said, "No, you got enough sweet stuff at the house,"
1:04
And today (giggles) I'm making an orange slice cookie.
1:09
So Debbie, thank you so much
1:13
for sharing your mother-in-law's recipe with us.
1:19
There, how about that for a book holder, Eddie?
1:22
I'm gonna start by siftin'...
1:27
Let's see, it's two cups of flour, all purpose flour,
1:32
with a pinch of salt.
1:35
And I had the salt in this one measurer,
1:38
a teaspoon of baking soda and a teaspoon of baking powder.
1:47
If you don't have a sifter, things like this
1:50
work very, very well.
1:53
And I've got a sifter, but I think I was just too lazy
1:58
to look for it, Debbie (giggles).
2:03
- [Eddie] I think I saw it in the dishwasher.
2:04
- What? - I think I saw it
2:06
in the dishwasher. - Think you saw it
2:07
in the dishwasher (giggles)?
2:10
Okay so there we go, that was real simple.
2:17
So we have one cup of sugar.
2:21
One cup, let me make sure I'm telling y'all right,
2:25
yes, one cup of white sugar, one cup of brown sugar,
2:30
and a cup of shortening.
2:34
I don't like digging out solid shortening out of those cans.
2:39
I just love it now that they do it in stick form
2:44
and this is a butter flavor shortening.
2:48
So we're just gonna cream these ingredients together.
2:54
See, it looks like butter y'all.
2:57
(mixer revs) Debbie says that the
2:59
hardest part about this recipe,
3:02
and I know she ain't lying about that,
3:05
the hardest part of this recipe was slicing up
3:10
these orange candies into small pieces.
3:15
And she says she sprays, she learned over the years,
3:23
with a non-stick spray
3:26
and she'd have to do it two or three times.
3:29
But you know what I'm gonna do?
3:31
I'm gonna add a little bit of flour.
3:33
You know when you're making like oatmeal cookies,
3:39
I love raisins in 'em or blueberry muffins,
3:43
to keep things on kilter, keep your blueberries
3:48
or your raisins from settling to the bottom,
3:52
you just need to dust them with a little flour.
3:54
And see how they've already separated now because of that
4:03
So those are gonna be ready.
4:05
And now that I have creamed this some,
4:08
I'm gonna add the two eggs
4:14
that have been slightly beaten
4:22
and that's gonna finish creamin' that butter and sugar
4:27
really, really well. (mixer revs)
4:30
Okay so Debbie says add the orange candies
4:36
so I think that we do the rest of this, y'all, by hand.
4:45
I can't believe I was craving these orange candies
4:48
last night and here I am today making 'em.
4:54
All right, so we sifted the flour, the soda, the powder,
4:58
and the salt together.
5:04
Now I'm gonna add the sifted ingredients
5:08
to our wet ingredients.
5:16
I can't wait to taste this, Debbie.
5:18
I have never had an orange slice candy cookie before,
5:24
I've had an orange slice cake.
5:27
So now I'm gonna add, let me see how much we had in coconut,
5:45
It kind of sounds like an oatmeal cookie
5:51
with a little bit of orange raisin in it.
5:56
I'm surprised it doesn't call for nuts, Debbie.
6:02
But I'm making this just like you said to make it.
6:09
And Debbie goes on to say, to drop this by just spoonfuls,
6:16
so just depending on how big you want your cookies.
6:34
Takes a little muscle,
6:46
Come in with both hands.
6:58
There 'ya go (giggles)!
7:01
As Olivia says, "There you go!" (giggles)
7:05
Hadn't you heard her say that, Eddie?
7:06
- Yes. - "There you go!"
7:08
- [Eddie] She's starting to repeat
7:10
everything you say right now.
7:13
She's like a little mockingbird.
7:15
All right, so I am gonna drop those
7:18
on a pre-greased cookie sheet
7:23
and Debbie said to bake 'em for 10 to 12 minutes or longer.
7:28
So there again, it depends on how you like your cookies.
7:32
If you like them on the softer side, cook 'em less.
7:38
If you like them crispy, cook 'em more.
7:41
375, pre-heated oven, y'all.
7:45
Okay, Debbie said to leave these sittin' on the tray
7:48
for five minutes before you transfer them over
7:52
to a cooling rack so that's what we're gonna do.
7:59
Five minutes will fly by.
8:07
(door slams) There we go!
8:13
Oh, they look delicious.
8:15
I don't see the orange candies in them.
8:18
That looks like maybe that was one right there,
8:22
Oh, I see a little piece of orange!
8:28
There's a little piece of orange.
8:32
I can't wait to taste 'em.
8:34
It's been almost five minutes hadn't it?
8:39
I've been thinking about it for five minutes,
8:45
but you definitely want to spray your pan.
8:53
Thank you, Teresa (giggles).
8:55
- [Teresa] Oh, you wanna...
8:55
Oh, I'm sorry! - It fell off my hand.
9:03
Because they could stick for a little bit,
9:05
so you wanna spray that pan.
9:20
Okay, that is the first pan and I've still got
9:26
at least this many more to bake off.
9:32
Who likes warm cookies?
9:33
Oh! I see that candy! - I see it! I see it!
9:36
- I see that candy, Debbie (giggles)!
9:40
Mm, they are delicious.
9:45
Would you like the other half of my cookie, Eddie?
9:54
- [Teresa] How is it, Eddie?
9:56
- Good, yeah. - Delicious.
9:58
- [Eddie] Taste the orange.
10:01
- Do they melt? - Uh uh.
10:05
See it stayed in little cubes?
10:07
- That's one of our questions...
10:08
Yeah it did, didn't it?
10:09
One of our questions was.
10:16
- You're going to think I'm nuts, y'all,
10:20
I'm not real crazy about cookies while they're warm,
10:23
but honey, I'll mow 'em down once they cool off.
10:26
How about you Eddie?
10:27
- [Eddie] Either way.
10:28
- Either way (giggles)?
10:34
I can't stand to see a grown man cry.
10:47
Look what I'm havin'...
10:48
(laughs) - He's havin' lettuce.
10:51
- [Eddie] A lettuce cookie.
10:52
- And tuna salad (laughs)!
10:56
If you're not gonna take it, quit the cryin'.
10:57
- [Teresa] Exactly, I'm with you on that one.
11:02
- I'm thinking the same thing, Teresa.
11:05
- [Teresa] He's got to go.
11:06
- He got to go (giggles)!
11:08
And I got to go (giggles)!
