- Hey y'all I'm in my old kitchen
0:03
on Turner's Creek and those that have followed me for years,
0:08
y'all will recognize this kitchen
0:10
because I shot in this kitchen for years.
0:14
So, I'm back in it!
0:18
Michael and I have come full circle,
0:20
we're right back where it started (laughs).
0:22
We at the scene of the crime (laughs).
0:25
- It's a good crime.
0:25
- That's the wall that my two dogs ran around
0:28
and found Michael propped on his chain link fence
0:32
smokin' a cigarette and talkin' on his cell phone.
0:35
And you know what, 16 years later,
0:37
the only thing he doesn't do any different
0:39
is he aint smokin' cigarettes. - Exactly.
0:41
- It's cigars now.
0:45
And they stink so bad.
0:47
So, the team and myself,
0:51
my team, Eddie.
0:53
My team, Theresa.
0:55
And my team, Paula.
0:56
That's our team (laughs).
0:59
And we got together and we talked about Christmas cookies
1:05
and we thought it would be fun to do
1:07
the 12 days of Christmas cookies.
1:12
Well, when we opened up Paula Deen's Family Kitchen
1:17
in Nashville Tennessee, there was a cute young man
1:21
that was our photographer
1:24
and his name was Phillip Feldman,
1:28
Fryman, F-r-y-m-a-n
1:32
and he is really really loyal to southern cooking
1:37
and he has his own Facebook page
1:44
and it's called, and we'll send you the link
1:47
so that you can go there and find out more about Phillip,
1:50
but it's Phillip.
1:56
- Southern FATTY. - Uh-huh.
1:58
I think it's just Phillip, not his second name,
2:01
but just Phillip
2:03
and southern and Southern FATTY.
2:09
Now the FATTY is all capital F-A-T-T-Y .com.
2:14
So it's PhillipSouthernFATTY, capitals, .com.
2:21
So, Phillip, you did so good
2:25
the day we were up there takin' pictures
2:27
and the grand opening and the ribbon cutting
2:30
of that restaurant was so so exciting for all of us
2:35
and I appreciate everything you did darling
2:38
to capture it on paper.
2:43
And not just, out there in the waves,
2:47
in those computer waves.
2:50
So I decided, after Theresa spoke with you,
2:56
you gave us permission to use your favorite cookie
3:00
that your mother makes every Christmas.
3:04
(dogs barking)
3:06
Whoa, who is it?
3:09
(dogs barking)
3:10
Hush!
3:13
So I have had this cookie years ago,
3:16
I'm almost thinking my grandma Paul might have made it.
3:20
But I don't know that I've ever made it.
3:24
So Phillip, I'm thrilled to death to get your recipe.
3:29
And it's called cornflake cookies
3:34
and it's an easy recipe, prep time maybe 15 minutes.
3:38
Cook time about 15 minutes.
3:41
So this is really gonna go quick.
3:44
So I can't wait to try you and your mama's cornflake cookies
3:50
And we're gonna start off by beating two sticks of butter.
4:00
Y'all aint shy about all the butter and Crisco (laughs)
4:06
used in this recipe.
4:08
- [Theresa] That's southern cooking though.
4:09
- I know, it's southern cooking!
4:11
And this is butter flavored solid shortening.
4:17
I think you know who makes it,
4:19
they've been around for 100 years.
4:21
So, we are just gonna beat these.
4:26
All right, let's see, cream butter, sugar and shortening
4:30
until just, no until well combined on this.
4:35
So, I'm gonna beat this for a minute
4:37
and then I'm gonna throw in our sugar.
4:52
Theresa and I was just in a conversation.
4:53
(dogs barking)
4:56
Hush Lulu!
4:58
We were just in a conversation about whether
5:02
you're supposed to use like frosted flakes
5:06
or just plain cornflakes and Theresa said,
5:09
I'm adding two cups of sugar, ya'll,
5:13
and Theresa said well I bought just plain old frosted,
5:19
I mean plain old cornflakes because frosted flakes
5:24
has a whole bunch of sugar!
5:27
And since we just put two cups of sugar in here,
5:33
Theresa felt like we did not need any extra.
5:39
- [Theresa] But what does Paula think?
5:41
- What does Paula think?
5:43
A little more sugar didn't never hurt nothin' (laughs).
5:46
- [Theresa] So you would be using frosted flakes.
5:47
- Except my belly, no Theresa,
5:50
since I didn't see frosted anywhere,
5:53
I'd a stood up there and I'd have a debate with myself.
5:57
But I would probably would have just settled on what he said
6:03
cornflakes. - It's unusual for you
6:04
Paula to follow a recipe. - I know (laughs).
6:06
I know it, ha-ha.
6:09
So Phillip, you're just a dear
6:11
and I'm so proud for the first recipe of
6:17
12 days of Christmas is yours!
6:21
Okay, so that seems to be pretty good.
6:25
All right, now let's see what his next step is.
6:28
He tells us to sift together flour, baking soda.
6:34
- [Theresa] On the left hand side.
6:35
- Over here, cream of tartar, right here.
6:39
And, okay, how much salt did he say?
6:43
- [Theresa] Half a teaspoon, I believe.
6:45
- Half a teaspoon, yes.
6:49
So let's see what I can transfer this with,
6:54
I think I'll use this.
6:55
So, this is all purpose flour.
6:58
Plain flour or all purpose, whatever you call it.
7:11
I can't wait to taste this recipe
7:13
and see if it rings the bell.
7:16
All right, soda, tartar.
7:20
And then half a teaspoon salt.
7:24
You know, this sounds like to me kinda like
7:26
that potato chip cookie, Theresa.
7:28
- [Theresa] Oh yeah.
7:29
- Have you ever had the potato chip?
7:30
- I have. - Well my cousin Don,
7:33
when he and Darleen come up and spend Christmas with us,
7:36
he makes that beautiful cherry cookie every Christmas
7:40
and we've done that for years and years and years
7:44
with Don and Darleen.
7:47
- [Theresa] Is that the chocolate chunk?
7:48
- No, it's the cherry cookies,
7:52
with the icing on top.
7:54
Oh my gosh, they are so good,
7:56
and they look real Christmas-y.
7:59
They good!
8:02
So, and he also makes that potato chip cookie
8:06
which this reminds me of that cookie, yes.
8:14
Come on flour, get through there.
8:18
You know what I found is the last ingredient
8:21
to stay in the sifter?
8:23
- The salt? - Kosher salt.
8:27
Stirring it up, put it in there, all right.
8:33
So let's see what little Phillip says.
8:37
Did I leave, may I have my measuring scoop please?
8:41
Thank you!
8:43
All right!
8:45
So by hand, all right let's see,
8:48
he said add this to the butter mixture
8:51
and combine until just mixed.
8:56
So that's what we're gonna do.
9:00
He doesn't say to add it in small amounts,
9:06
he just says add it to our butter mixture.
9:15
I think I'll do it like two separate,
9:19
two separate batches.
9:24
Okay, this is gonna be very thick.
9:31
A thick batter.
9:34
All right, here we go.
9:44
You know, every time I hear, "there we go"
9:49
I think of that children's nursery rhyme.
