- Hey, y'all!
0:02
Are we running, Eddie?
0:03
- [Eddie] Yep.
0:04
- Are we goin'? Good!
0:05
I didn't see you go like that. (laughing)
0:09
Um, so come on in the kitchen.
0:13
I am so excited about this one, Theresa.
0:18
You know,
0:19
I asked y'all to send me things that you love
0:21
and what has become favorites for your family.
0:25
Well, this recipe I have never, ever heard of this, y'all.
0:30
- [Theresa] Have you ever heard of it, Eddie?
0:31
- [Eddie] No, I haven't.
0:32
(all talking over each other)
0:33
- [Theresa] You're a Polish descendant.
0:35
- [Eddie] I've never, I've never heard of it, either.
0:37
- I know that's crazy.
0:39
- [Eddie] I've had some family members
0:41
that I think will like it, so...
0:43
- (laughing) Well, I just can't hardly wait.
0:45
Casey, that works in our office,
0:48
in our little corporate office,
0:50
she has two young children, so that girl cooks.
0:53
I mean, she cooks,
0:55
and it's always out of "Cooking with Paula Deen" magazine
0:59
or off of our website.
1:01
Well, when we got this recipe in, she said,
1:03
"I had to try it,"
1:05
because, uh, her family, likes dill pickles so much.
1:10
So this is from, and God love you, Barbara Winslow.
1:15
Alright, now I'm gonna, since I've turned this on,
1:19
I'm goin' go ahead and add six cups of chicken broth.
1:24
- [Theresa] I'm gonna show you her picture.
1:26
- Uh, oh, uh oh, uh oh.
1:27
- [Theresa] That was the picture that she sent me,
1:29
so let's see how Paula's turns out.
1:31
- (laughing) Are you putting me under the gun, Sissy?
1:36
- [Theresa] Yup.
1:39
- Okay.
1:44
Wash that out a little bit better.
1:47
Okay.
1:50
You know, my eye, it is really messed up my distances.
1:56
So I missed a little bit of the pot on that one, but anyway,
2:00
I wanna tell y'all what Barbara shared with us.
2:07
And it was so sweet.
2:10
She said,
2:12
"Paula, I am not yelling at you.
2:16
I have severe arthritis and typing in caps is easier for me.
2:21
I am also 70 years old and have many senior moments.
2:24
Please be kind."
2:26
Oh honey, listen, I've got you.
2:29
I could be your older sister,
2:32
because I got you by four years.
2:33
So just let me tell you something.
2:36
I, my mind is totally open
2:39
because I'm going through the same things that you are.
2:46
But she said, "I've been a faithful viewer
2:49
of Paula for years.
2:50
I'm 71 and still in the kitchen.
2:52
Since my husband passed,
2:54
I don't have many large meals,
2:56
but this soup has always been a favorite,
2:59
and I've always made it in the summer
3:01
while we were harvesting our garden
3:04
and canning pickles, tomatoes and many other good things.
3:10
But this is really good year-round.
3:12
I would be honored if you would give it a try,
3:14
and let me know how you, Michael, and your staff like it."
3:19
So that is what we're doing Barbara, and I so appreciate it.
3:23
And I know having severe arthritis,
3:27
is a task for you.
3:29
So thank you so much for caring enough to send this to me
3:33
so I could send it out to the world.
3:35
So thank you, Barbara.
3:37
So we started with six cups of chicken broth,
3:41
two pounds, of um, now she peeled hers, but...
3:47
- [Theresa] Those are those little niblets that you buy.
3:48
- Uh, huh, these are the little niblets.
3:50
- [Theresa] Uh, huh, they tell you
3:51
that you don't have to peel them.
3:51
- No, I don't ever peel any of my potatoes.
3:54
Very rarely, unless I'm doing creamed potatoes,
3:58
and then I'll kind of just half peel them, you know,
4:02
cause I just like having that skin,
4:04
I know it's a fresh potato I'm eatin'.
4:08
All right, the six cups of chicken broth,
4:11
two pounds of potatoes, peeled and chunked,
4:15
two cups of diced carrots.
4:19
- [Theresa] I already opened it for you,
4:20
and you just shut it.
4:21
- Oh, and I just shut it back, okay.
4:23
(Paula laughing)
4:27
Okay.
4:29
these are so much easier to me than the ones I have to...
4:32
- [Theresa] Mmmhmm.
4:34
- All right, so let's see what Ms. Barbara says.
4:38
In a large pot combine the broth, potatoes,
4:41
carrots and butter!
4:45
And it calls for one cup of butter.
4:50
That's a half a cup.
4:54
- [Theresa] Casey's next comment under her picture was
4:57
it was absolutely delicious, in her opinion.
5:00
- It was absolutely delicious and perfect.
5:03
Okay.
5:05
Don't get mad with me.
5:08
You get mad with Ms. Barbara and Casey. (laughing)
5:13
They recommended it.
5:15
No, I know it's going to be delicious.
5:17
You know, there's no such thing as too much butter.
5:21
Mm, I can't imagine the taste that we're gonna have.
5:26
All right, now how about salt or anything like that?
5:30
She said, black pepper and cayenne.
5:33
So I guess this doesn't call for any salt because the dill.
5:38
The dill pickle juice that we're going to use,
5:40
and the dill pickles contain a lot of sodium.
5:43
So.
5:45
I'm gonna cover that.
5:49
And....
5:52
well, it's not boiling yet.
5:53
And she said, bring it to a boil
5:54
and cook until the veggies are tender.
5:57
And then you add the pickles
6:02
and continue to boil.
6:04
In a bowl, she says
6:07
stir together the flour,
6:10
which is a half a cup of all purpose flour,
6:15
one cup of sour cream,
6:20
- [Theresa] And some water.
6:21
It said a quarter cup.
6:21
- At a time into the soup, let's see.
6:24
Yeah, mix together the flour, sour cream
6:27
and water, making a paste.
6:30
Because you know, if you just put flour in there,
6:34
it'll lump up to beat the band.
6:36
In fact, Barbara said, that we're going to have a lump,
6:40
some lumps in there, but if we whisk,
6:44
it will dissolve those, those lumps.
6:47
So, okay.
6:50
So is this the bowl I'm to mix the flour in, I guess?
6:53
- [Theresa] Yes, ma'am.
6:55
- Okie dokie.
6:56
So, half a cup of all purpose flour,
7:00
one cup of sour cream, yeah.
7:10
And that's great, this little sized cup
7:12
yields you exactly one cup.
7:16
So you don't have to measure, and that's wonderful.
7:21
And, how much water did she add?
7:22
- [Theresa] A fourth of a cup.
7:23
- Fourth of a cup, okay.
7:26
So we just want to mix this up real good.
7:29
And get it as smooth as we can.
7:31
(dog barking)
7:35
Who's coming in our house, Gus?
7:38
(dog barking)
7:39
Who's coming in our house?
7:43
Eat him alive!
7:44
- [Theresa] It was Jason.
7:45
- (laughing) Oh, don't eat poor Jason alive.
7:49
(squeaky door opening and shutting)
7:54
Jason's trying to help us.
7:56
- [Eddie] It was Michael.
7:58
- Oh!
7:58
Get him!
8:00
Get him!
8:01
- [Eddie] Gus is looking...
8:02
(Paula laughing)
8:04
- [Michael] Sit, shake.
8:06
Good boy, good boy.
8:08
- Oh, Michael, you're just right on time, honey.
8:12
To fall into that joke.
8:16
You hungry?
8:20
- [Michael] Not really.
8:21
- You won't believe what I'm making.
8:24
Try to guess what I'm making.
8:27
- [Michael] Um...
8:28
- Something I've never made before.
8:31
For you.
8:35
All right, fourth of a cup of water.
8:41
- I don't know.
8:42
Hamburger.
8:44
- No!
8:45
I'm making Polish dill pickle soup.
8:51
(Paula laughing)
8:54
- That don't sound good.
8:56
- Well,
8:58
I hear that it's delicious.
9:00
Casey, you know, from the office...
9:02
- [Michael] Uh huh
9:03
- made it, and she said it's absolutely delicious.
9:07
Cause she said her family loved dill pickles,
9:10
so she just had to try it.
9:13
- [Michael] Well, I like pickles,
9:14
and I like soup.
9:15
I don't know about pickle soup.
9:16
- Well, we'll just see, you can be my guinea pig.
9:23
- [Eddie] I'm thinking, its gonna be like
9:24
that Chinese, like, sweet and sour soup or something, or...
9:27
- Uh, huh, uh huh. - [Eddie] or, uh, you know,
9:29
- Yeah. You like the sweet and sour, don't you?
9:31
- Yep.
9:33
- Are you a native?
9:35
- Yeah.
9:36
- What are you a native of?
9:37
- See Georgia, that's Georgia, if you didn't know.
9:39
- Oh, oh, oh, I see. (laughing)
9:41
I wasn't paying attention to the shape.
9:44
I was just paying attention to the word.
9:47
(whisk hitting bowl)
9:48
Alright!
9:50
After this cooks and the potatoes get a little tender,
9:54
a little, little tender,
9:56
then, I'm going to drop this by tablespoons
10:02
into our boiling stock,
10:04
and I'm going to keep whiskin' it.
10:07
So we can lessen the chance of lumps.
10:13
Okay, our little potatoes,
10:15
they are starting to get a little tender to them.
10:17
So I'm gonna add our diced dill pickles.
10:22
And Barbara said that ones that you get
10:26
at the grocery store
10:27
that are diced salad dill pickle cubes work fine.
10:34
Oh, isn't that so pretty.
10:35
These colors.
10:36
Can you see in the pot, Eddie?
10:37
- [Eddie] Yes.
10:38
- The yellow of the potatoes
10:40
and the orange of the carrots
10:42
and the green of the dill pickles.
10:45
It's just a pretty picture.
10:48
All right,
10:49
so I'm going to bring this back to a boil now,
10:50
because I am fixing to add our mixture
10:56
of sour cream, flour, and water to it.
11:01
And Barbara said, "Don't panic!
11:04
If you have lumps, they'll go away."
11:06
So I'm not gonna panic, Barbara.
11:12
I'm just going to have my whisk ready,
11:14
ready to go.
11:22
I can't hardly wait to taste this.
11:27
You know, it really doesn't take
11:31
a lot of time for this recipe.
11:35
So she said, add two tablespoons at a time,
11:38
so I'm thinking that heapin' brown spoon
11:43
is equivalent to two tablespoons.
11:48
And she said, whisk, whisk, whisk.
11:50
Some of the potatoes may break up,
11:52
but that's all right.
11:58
You know, I mixed my stuff together so good,
12:01
you know, I really don't even see any lumps,
12:05
which is great.
12:06
I love it when a good plan comes together, Barbara.
12:11
Okay.
12:13
So here goes the last of our sour cream
12:20
and flour mixture.
12:23
(spatula banging on pot)
12:28
Back with the whisk.
12:29
Whisk, whisk, whisk.
12:31
(whisk scraping the pot)
12:46
I'm telling you what,
12:47
there's so many ways to do things,
12:50
and so interesting to peek in the world of other people.
12:58
Love it!
13:00
All right.
13:01
Now she says,
13:05
that this will become smooth and creamy,
13:10
which it really is.
13:12
And she said, don't panic,
13:16
turn heat down to simmer, and then add the pickle juice.
13:22
And this is two cups of pickle juice.
13:27
You know, right now, just looking at this, Eddie,
13:30
it's reminding me of that wonderful potato soup that I make,
13:37
that my buddy Marilyn Milson shared with me.
13:40
It's one of her favorite recipes, and it's so good.
13:44
And that's kinda what this is looking like,
13:46
even though it has no cream in it,
13:49
it's gonna be like a cream soup
13:53
- [Eddie] Yes.
13:54
- because of the sour cream - [Eddie] Sour cream, yeah.
13:55
- and the flour, yes.
13:56
So she says, add one teaspoon of black pepper.
14:01
So the way, Barbara makes this,
14:03
this is going to be pretty dadgum spicy.
14:07
I've got a teaspoon and a half of Old Bay.
14:12
And if your grocery store has a seafood department,
14:18
you can find your Old Bay back there
14:22
near the seafood.
14:23
That's what we boil all of our shrimp and crab in.
14:26
(whisk hitting the pot)
14:30
Okay.
14:33
And then, a fourth of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
14:39
And then she said, I thought this was so cute.
14:43
Six shakes of Paula Dean hot sauce.
14:46
(buzzer going off)
14:48
Uh, oh, how's that pie?
14:51
Oh, I hope we can eat this stuff.
14:55
I didn't mean to put that much y'all.
14:58
- [Theresa] I'm sorry.
14:59
(buzzer continues buzzing)
15:03
- Okay, it looks so good.
15:06
(whisk hitting pot)
15:07
Okay, so I'm just going to cover this back up.
15:10
Get outta there, potato!
15:12
(whisk hitting pot)
15:15
(Paula laughing)
15:16
And carrot.
15:18
So I'm just gonna put that back on,
15:22
and Barbara said to simmer it
15:23
for five to 10 more minutes,
15:26
and it's ready to eat.
15:32
Looks so good y'all.
15:35
Come around here, baby, there's your bowl.
15:39
- This is too much for me.
15:41
- Come around, there's your bowl. (laughing)
15:47
What you want, Gus?
15:49
- [Theresa] Hot!
15:51
- Uh, huh, it's hot as...
15:54
a firecracker.
15:58
(spoons clinking)
16:04
- [Theresa] Did you taste it yet?
16:04
- Yeah!
16:05
I've never tasted anything like it, Barbara.
16:07
It's delicious.
16:09
And if you like dill pickles,
16:11
you are going to fall head over heels in love,
16:14
if you like butter and pickles.
16:18
- [Theresa] I like it.
16:19
- You've heard of the bread and butter pickles?
16:20
- [Theresa] Mm hmm.
16:21
- It's good!
16:22
- Isn't it delicious, Michael?
16:23
- Uh huh.
16:25
I thought there was gonna be pickles floating around there.
16:27
- There is.
16:28
See the little...
16:29
- I thought big dill pickles.
16:30
- [Theresa] Oh, no, it's just a cup.
16:33
- If it was one of them dill pickles, I could,...
16:35
- [Theresa] (laughing) You thought...
16:36
- [Michael] That wouldn't be a real good soup.
16:39
- It's so good y'all!
16:41
- This is good.
16:42
- Mm hmm.
16:46
And I don't think I gave myself not one potato.
16:50
- [Theresa] I told you to take a ...
16:51
- [Michael] Here, I got some.
16:51
Oh no, no, no.
16:53
I'm going back and gettin' me some.
16:54
- [Michael] Here have some potatoes.
16:54
- Hm-mm.
16:56
- [Michael] I got extras.
16:56
- Okay. I don't wanna ...
16:57
I don't want to take all your potatoes.
17:02
I'll take one and a half potatoes.
17:06
- [Theresa] Yum.
17:07
This is good!
17:08
- It's so good.
17:09
- It's a different flavor
17:12
but it's good.
17:14
- It's delicious.
17:16
- A little warm.
17:17
- [Theresa] It is hot, though.
17:18
- It is hot.
17:20
But you know what?
17:21
I was afraid it was going to be too seasoned,
17:23
hot to eat it, but it's not,
17:25
- [Theresa] Not at all. - Not at all.
17:30
- I wasn't afraid of that.
17:30
- If it didn't have the pickles,
17:32
it would taste like oyster stew.
17:36
- [Theresa] Yeah.
17:41
- And maybe had some oysters.
17:43
(ladies laughing)
17:45
- Some oysters in it.
17:51
- Course some oyster stew you get,
17:53
that's about all you get is potatoes.
17:54
- Uh huh, yeah.
17:57
I don't put potatoes in my oyster stew.
18:00
- You don't?
18:01
- [Theresa] My mom never did, either.
18:02
- I can't remember.
18:04
- [Theresa] Butter.
18:05
- Why can't you remember?
18:07
- Cause it's been awhile.
18:09
Remember, you made me oyster stew with ...
18:11
- Don't you even talk about it!
18:12
I didn't realize it was sweet, like,
18:15
sweet milk.
18:17
- Vanilla milk.
18:18
- It was vanilla milk!
18:19
And I made him some oyster stew.
18:22
And of course, I didn't taste it, and I...
18:24
- She said, "How do you like it?"
18:25
I said, well, it's different.
18:27
- It was the sweetest oyster stew I've ever had.
18:29
- I said, it's different.
18:31
- Well, thank you Barbara. - And I, I still ate it.
18:33
Thank you dear.
18:34
Love and best dishes to you.
