0:00
- Happy Valentine's day, y'all, from Michael and me.
0:07
We were on a cruise one time and we did a game show,
0:11
newlywed game show.
0:14
Where we had to say
0:16
what we thought how they would answer it.
0:19
And we had such a good time.
0:21
So I think we're gonna repeat that.
0:24
After we'd probably been married just a couple of years,
0:27
so after, how many years have we been married?
0:31
- Now? - In 2004.
0:33
When would that make?
0:34
- 18, now.
0:35
- Yeah, 18.
0:36
Next month, will be 18 years that we've been together
0:40
and we haven't killed each other yet.
0:42
- [Theresa] Well, I was gonna say
0:44
some people may not know how y'all met,
0:45
so why don't since it's Valentine's day,
0:47
why don't you tell them y'all's romantical story.
0:49
- That's a long story. - I can tell it for ya.
0:52
- No, no, I don't like the way you tell it.
0:56
So I lived right next door.
0:58
I had moved from downtown
1:00
because I decided to wanted to live on the water, y'all.
1:03
So I bought the first place I looked at
1:06
and it was in a beautiful condo in Turner's Cove.
1:10
And there was six units that was right on the water.
1:12
I could almost step out the door and spit into the water.
1:19
So I had, I went right after I moved,
1:22
I moved in on my birthday, January the 19th.
1:25
And in August I had been on hiatus from the restaurant
1:33
because I was writing
1:37
the Lady and Son.
1:39
- Just desserts.
1:40
- Just desserts, yes, The Lady and Sons Just Desserts.
1:44
And I finished in August and
1:47
so I stayed in my kitchen or at the computer
1:50
and I would let Sam and Otis, my two dogs,
1:53
I would let them out to go to the bathroom.
1:55
And our condos were,
1:57
they looked like downtown because we even had a square.
2:00
So I would take them out to walk in the square
2:03
to do their business.
2:05
Well, this one particular day, it was
2:08
like mid August and it was hot as blue blazes.
2:15
So I let them out the back door.
2:18
And as soon as I did
2:21
they turned to the left and haul boogied.
2:25
And I had no idea where they were going,
2:29
but they heard somebody around that big old wall over there.
2:38
So that wall came
2:40
almost to the water, lacking
2:43
about this much, just a enough for someone to shimmy around.
2:47
So the dogs ran around it easily.
2:50
And then I held on for dear life and shimmied around it and
2:55
sure enough, they had
2:58
heard somebody talking
3:00
on their phone.
3:05
They led me up to this man with a long, scraggly beard
3:09
and long hair.
3:11
And he was talking on his cell phone
3:13
and he looked so mean.
3:15
- It was love at first sight.
3:17
- No, it was not.
3:19
And naturally Otis started taking a humongous crap
3:24
right there at Michael's feet.
3:28
And I said, oh, well, he'll kill me now.
3:30
That's reason for him to kill me.
3:33
So I said, I am so, so sorry.
3:36
If you've got something, I can get it up with,
3:38
I'm happy to get it, you know, get it up.
3:41
And he said, he mumble something like, well,
3:45
I like animals. It's people I'm not so sure about.
3:53
So listen for the past three years ,y'all,
3:58
when I was living downtown,
4:00
I was praying that God would send me a neighbor
4:04
because my business was doing so good.
4:07
My children were doing good, but I was lonely.
4:10
I was very, very lonely.
4:12
So every night, that was the last thing I said
4:16
before I went to sleep, God, please send me that neighbor.
4:22
So, I mean
4:23
I gathered my dogs up quickly and started home.
4:29
We got them around the fence and I put them down
4:33
let them walk in the house.
4:34
And all of a sudden it dawned on me,
4:39
and I just stopped in my tracks.
4:40
And I looked up and I said,
4:42
Lord, that ain't my neighbor is it? You sent?
4:46
(laughing)
4:49
Cause he scared me.
4:51
- So y'all be careful what you pray for.
4:55
- You just might get it.
4:58
So the dogs did it one more time.
5:01
And that time I said, well,
5:04
he didn't kill us the first time so,
5:07
maybe he'll kill us this time.
5:08
So I asked him three questions.
5:11
I mean, quick, I was, I was popping them off quick
5:14
so I could get outta there.
5:16
First thing I said, are you married?
5:18
He said, no.
5:19
And I said, do you have any children?
5:22
Yes. I've got two teenagers, a girl and a boy.
5:25
I said, that's good.
5:27
You know, he's got custody of these children.
5:31
And the third question I asked him,
5:34
and I felt like I'd hit the jackpot.
5:37
You don't have a job do you?
5:43
He said, well, yes I do.
5:47
I'm a Harbor pilot.
5:49
And that really made me smile.
5:52
Because I knew that these pilots were self-sufficient
5:58
and didn't need any outside help.
6:05
Because what little money I had then
6:06
I was working terribly hard for it.
6:11
So that's it.
6:12
But if you can get your hands on the copy of my memoir
6:17
it ain't all about the cooking.
6:19
That'll really tell you the whole nitty gritty story.
6:23
Right?
6:24
- Yep.
6:25
- [Theresa] Do you have any add-ons?
6:26
- No, that's it,
6:27
she had it almost everything.
6:32
She did ask me if I knew anything about boats.
6:35
- Yeah. Because I just bought a boat
6:37
- And she couldn't turn the CD player on, that's it.
6:41
- I'd put in my Motown CDs.
6:44
- But I started thinking because
6:45
at the time I was happily unmarried.
6:49
So,
6:50
I started thinking,
6:52
gosh this might be a match made in heaven here.
6:55
This woman's got a restaurant, just wrote a sweets cookbook.
6:59
Because I have a sweet tooth this big.
7:02
And I said, she's got her own boat?
7:05
(laughing)
7:07
- See, he was checking off the list the same way I was.
7:15
Yep.
7:16
- So it would've been a match made in Heaven.
7:18
- Yeah, I did. I asked him if he knew anything about boats
7:21
because I had just bought this boat.
7:23
How many feet was it?
7:24
- 27
7:25
- 20, it was big.
7:28
But I had
7:29
- It's the same as that one, same size
7:30
- Is it, was it?
7:31
- Yeah, it was in a cabin on it.
7:33
- It had two big old motors.
7:34
Yeah. And you could sleep in mine.
7:36
It had a cabin in it with some beds.
7:40
So I couldn't drive that.
7:42
Bubba tried and I think he got,
7:45
you know, got,
7:47
I don't know, but it didn't work out.
7:50
And I used to get my dogs and I'd get my Motown CDs
7:55
and I'd go down there and
7:57
put in my CDs and turn them real loud.
7:59
I'm surprised the neighbors didn't say anything to me
8:04
because you know, I had it pretty loud.
8:06
And when you own water, like that sound travels.
8:11
But the dogs and I just sat there and
8:15
we'd wait for another boat to come by,
8:18
you know, to give us a little wake
8:21
so we can rock, say we've been out boating.
8:27
- [Theresa] So let's get to our little newly wed game.
8:30
- Okay.
8:31
- [Theresa] So I'm gonna ask each one of you,
8:35
I'm gonna go back and forth, questions wise.
8:37
And as the newly we game works, they've been asked
8:40
these questions and they've already given their answers.
8:42
And these are just fun little questions.
8:44
We'll see how well, you know each other.
8:45
So the first question is actually for Paula.
8:51
And this is about Michael.
8:52
So you're answering a question that Michael has answered.
8:55
- Its not about Michael it's about what Michael would say?
8:58
- [Theresa] Yes.
8:59
- How he would answer them, right?
9:00
- [Theresa] Right.
9:01
- Okay.
9:02
- [Theresa] These are safe questions just So you know.
9:04
- They're safe, which means what?
9:05
- [Theresa] What was Michael's first car?
9:10
- What was Michael's first car?
9:16
He told me and it was old.
9:19
It was like, was it a Plymouth or a Dodge?
9:26
Then he had a little beetle.
9:27
He had a Volkswagen for a long time.
9:30
But his very first car was
9:34
it was like a $200 junker or something.
9:37
- [Theresa] What's the answer, Michael?
9:42
- Galaxy 500.
9:43
- That was a nice car.
9:44
- Who makes that?
9:46
- Ford.
9:48
- Okay. Galaxy 500. I'll never forget that now.
9:52
- It looked like the car on Andy in Mayberry, though.
9:56
- Yeah. You'd tell me that.
9:57
- Police car.
9:58
- [Theresa] So Michael, this questions for you.
10:01
- Okay.
10:02
- [Theresa] How many pairs of shoes does Paula own?
10:11
- 70.
10:14
- 70?
10:17
That's how many you own.
10:20
I said you would say 30.
10:22
We ain't even got 70 holes back there to put shoes in.
10:26
- [Theresa] Well we're even.
10:27
The score is tied.
10:32
Okay, so.
10:33
- I knew my answer, you just guessed yours.
10:36
- Well, I had to say what you would say,
10:38
what I thought you would say,
10:40
- [Theresa] Hey, it's Valentine's day.
10:42
Okay, Paula ready?
10:44
What would Michael say?
10:46
Is Paula
10:47
always late,
10:49
always early or right on time?
10:52
Always late.
10:56
What did you say?
10:57
- I forgot.
10:59
- [Theresa] He said extra, extra late.
11:03
Tell them the story you told me.
11:04
- I think I get a point don't I?
11:05
- Just the other day we were on airplane,
11:07
Paula was watching a movie and we had a connector.
11:11
So it was kind of
11:13
we didn't have long to sit there
11:16
and it was Atlanta so to go to another concourse,
11:19
- Like a quick connection.
11:20
- Paula had to watch the end of her movie.
11:24
Thank Lord, the airplane turned the damn movie off
11:27
so we could go catch that next plane.
11:30
And then she left her iPad and her phone.
11:34
So we were, we almost spent the night in Atlanta.
11:38
- But Michael, I was so frustrated because I had
11:41
I had to shut off a movie
11:44
on the flight there and then the next flight.
11:46
So I had missed two movies, the end of two movies.
11:50
- [Theresa] Oh Lord.
11:51
Okay. You ready, Michael?
11:53
So what is Paula's favorite food?
11:57
- Paula's favorite food, let me think.
12:06
It might be my favorite too but
12:08
I'm gonna say pork chops.
12:11
- [Theresa] Is it pork chops, Paula?
12:15
- I was pretty close.
12:16
- [Theresa] You were pretty close.
12:18
Oxtails. What are oxtails, Paula?
12:21
- Oh, they're this romantical food.
12:24
- [Theresa] And what is romantical?
12:24
- Pick it up and gnaw it and it's just run down your arms.
12:28
It's just so.
12:29
- It's actually tail.
12:29
- It's a tail of a castrated bull.
12:34
- We used to call it swinging sirloin.
12:38
- [Theresa] Okay.
12:39
- But they're delicious and it used to really be,
12:42
really, really a poor man's food.
12:45
But you can go into most restaurants in New York city
12:49
right now, your fine restaurants,
12:51
and there'll be some form of oxtail on that menu.
12:55
Whether it be oxtail soup.
12:58
We went to a restaurant one time in New York,
13:00
supposed to be the finest French restaurant
13:03
and they had oxtail and lobster.
13:05
And I said, get that, Michael that'll fill you up.
13:08
Well, they brought his plate out
13:10
and it looked like a strip of chewing gum.
13:13
- [Theresa] So we keep asking questions about cars, Paula,
13:16
to you because we know that Michael absolutely adores cars.
13:22
- Yeah. Anything with a motor?
13:23
- [Theresa] Exactly.
13:24
So how many cylinders does Michael's cars have?
13:28
And it's actually pretty much one answer.
13:30
- Which cars?
13:33
- [Theresa] Which cars, Michael?
13:33
Which cars do you ask him about?
13:35
You said in his cars, like multiple
13:37
- [Theresa] His old car.
13:38
- Oh his old car?
13:39
- [Theresa] His vintage.
13:40
- Oh, I would say probably a six cylinder
13:46
but I know he would prefer an eight cylinder.
13:48
Right?
13:50
- [Theresa] Well what is it, Michael?
13:54
- Eight.
13:54
- You were close. - I said both of them.
13:56
- [Theresa] I know you did.
13:58
Okay, Michael. who said, I love you first?
14:06
- I think I did.
14:10
- [Theresa] Ding, ding, ding.
14:12
Yeah, that's so sweet.
14:15
So ,Paula, what is Michael's?
14:17
- He and his family are big I love yous.
14:21
I mean they walk from one room to the other.
14:24
I love you. You know?
14:28
So I think it was him.
14:31
- [Theresa] So what is Michael's favorite food?
14:37
- Michael. Did I answer that?
14:41
Well, I don't have a card telling me that.
14:43
- [Theresa] He's gonna tell you once you answer it.
14:45
- Oh, that's right.
14:47
I got it bassackwards.
14:50
I was going to look on my card to see what I said.
14:54
- You're still pretty.
14:55
- Thank you.
15:01
You just can't be smart and be this pretty too can you?
15:06
- It's tough.
15:06
- I look like crap today, thank you very much.
15:09
All right, let's see.
15:13
What his favorite food is,
15:16
Seafood.
15:17
- [Theresa] Okay.
15:18
- Some form of seafood
15:23
- [Theresa] A standing rib roast.
15:25
- I know that.
15:26
I know that is his favorite food
15:28
but he tells me so often, I could live off of seafood.
15:32
Seafood every meal.
15:34
- [Theresa] You like most food?
15:35
- It's not about a lot of food I don't like,
15:39
it's hard to believe
15:39
- You haven't met him yet have you?
15:41
- I'm so I'm so fed you wouldn't think that.
15:46
- [Theresa] Okay. So here's the last question.
15:49
- He had to go to the doctor today.
15:52
And he came in, I said, how'd it go, Michael?
15:56
He said, that doctor told me I was in perfect shape.
16:01
A perfect specimen of a man.
16:05
16:06
(laughing)
16:11
Oh, I thought that was funny.
16:14
Because he had me, I said, oh good, good report.
16:19
- [Theresa] Okay. So Paula, here's the last question.
16:23
What is your.
16:24
- I've got more hearts than that.
16:26
- [Theresa] Oh, I'm sorry you should, I'm sorry.
16:28
- I got two hearts
16:29
- [Theresa] I'm supposed to be at, I've messed up sorry.
16:31
It's Michael's turn.
16:34
What are Paula's favorite pizza toppings?
16:38
- Pizza.
16:40
Let's see.
16:44
She kind of changes it out.
16:47
I'm gonna say
16:49
sausage
16:52
and bacon.
16:58
Definitely around (inaudible).
17:00
- [Theresa] It's close.
17:01
- I almost said that.
17:03
We do like all the meat, so.
17:06
- Oh, that's what I said.
17:07
- I could've picked four or five of them.
17:09
- We like meat pizzas.
17:11
Don't give us no margarita pizza.
17:17
- [Theresa] Okay. So Paula, here's your last question
17:19
that you have to answer.
17:21
What is your favorite recipe that,
17:24
what is Michael's favorite recipe that you make for him?
17:29
- What now?
17:30
- [Theresa] Okay. This question is, it was to Michael
17:32
and it was what is your favorite recipe
17:35
that Paula makes for you?
17:36
- Well doesn't he need to answer that
17:37
because I know the answer.
17:38
- I already did, you answer it.
17:39
- [Theresa] You answer, what did he say?
17:41
You have to answer what he said, remember?
17:43
- How many times we gotta go over these rules?
17:45
- Well, now I'm confused.
17:47
- What's my favorite recipe you cook for me?
17:50
- No, the question was what is.
17:53
- [Theresa] Your favorite recipe.
17:54
- That you cook for me?
17:56
- [Theresa] No, this was the question to Michael
17:59
and Michael answered it.
18:01
- Am I supposed to have a heart.
18:03
- [Theresa] No. Right. You are supposed to have one more
18:05
and guess.
18:07
- You're the only person who's ever failed
18:09
the damn newlywed test.
18:12
- [Theresa] Okay. So this was the question that I
18:14
asked Michael and he has his answer written right here.
18:17
So we just need you to guess what he wrote down.
18:19
- Okay. And what was that question?
18:21
- [Theresa] What is your favorite recipe
18:23
that Paula makes for you?
18:26
- What is his favorite recipe that I make for him?
18:29
- [Theresa] Correct.
18:31
- You're so damn pretty.
18:32
- Standing rib.
18:39
(laughing)
18:42
The oxtails.
18:45
- And you never make them.
18:46
You know how I used to get them?
18:48
- They are so stinking expensive, Michael.
18:52
You know, most time it's bone
18:55
and you buy them at the grocery store
18:56
and they leave so much fat on.
18:58
- You know how I used to get, get you to cook oxtails?
19:02
I'd get Bubba, I said Bubba, tell Paula you want oxtails.
19:07
And you'd say, Bubba, you want some oxtails?
19:10
I'll feed you some oxtails.
19:15
- My brother loved them.
19:17
He loved them.
19:18
- [Theresa] Let's try this last question.
19:20
So Paula,
19:20
- Okay. I think I'm winning.
19:23
Even though confused.
19:25
- Well, no, you failed. You failed.
19:26
- I'm a confused winner.
19:28
- Once we had to give you the, the instructions is 15 times.
19:32
- [Theresa] So Michael, how did Paula,
19:33
- Well it is confusing.
19:34
- [Theresa] So Michael, how did Paula answer this question?
19:37
What is your favorite recipe that Michael makes for you?
19:41
- That you make.
19:43
- I know, I get it.
19:46
I understand.
19:48
(Paula laughing and snorting)
19:53
Let's see.
19:54
- Think.
19:57
- This sausage and pork loin and sausage.
20:03
- [Theresa] Yeah.
20:03
(clapping)
20:05
- I know you better than you know me, right?
20:08
Or did I get that right?
20:10
- [Theresa] I think it was kind of even.
20:11
- It was kind even
20:11
- Lets see I got is that one, right?
20:15
70 pair of shoes.
20:17
- We can count them.
20:19
We may have to alter that.
20:21
- [Theresa] I think we should stop while we're ahead.
20:23
And let's just celebrate Valentine's Day.
20:27
- Yeah. Maybe I should give you this.
20:28
- Because we are both competitive.
20:33
- I can't believe I had the standing rib and the oxtails.
20:39
- Yeah. Maybe I should just give you those,
20:40
put those in your notes.
20:44
- He wants me to cook these.
20:50
Well, I guess that's a wrap, honey.
20:54
We're going have to stay together 20 more years
20:55
because we really don't know each other.
20:59
We don't, really don't know each other that well do we?
21:02
- We should in the next 20 years.
21:07
- Happy Valentine's Day.
21:09
- Same to you.
