- Christmas is just not Christmas
0:03
unless there are some gingerbread men cookies around, right?
0:09
They just scream, scream Christmas.
0:13
And one of my business acquaintance mother-in-law
0:21
makes the best gingerbread cookie in the world.
0:26
And I did not ask her for the recipe.
0:28
I kinda had a feeling she might not want to share it.
0:32
So this is the recipe that I had on my website.
0:37
So I'm still in search
0:40
of the best gingerbread man cookies
0:45
that I could ever hope to make.
0:49
So this is my first shot at it.
0:52
And I think I'll be able to improve on it
0:55
as I work on these gingerbread cookies.
0:58
So I make a lot of ginger cookies,
1:01
but I just don't go to the, you know,
1:03
to the actual gingerbread man and woman.
1:06
All right.
1:07
So we're going to start by creaming
1:12
our dark brown sugar with our stick of butter.
1:17
And you know, it's kind of the typical ingredients.
1:20
And of course you can always
1:24
change about your spices if you want to.
1:29
If you like them with a real ginger flavor,
1:32
add more ginger, if you like more cinnamon,
1:38
add more cinnamon,
1:41
and the same goes for your nutmeg.
1:44
And what was that other one that I didn't have put in here,
1:48
all spice?
1:50
So, just kind of play around with it.
1:56
Do what suits your tongue.
2:03
Okay.
2:04
I am just slowing this down until I get it under control.
2:08
- [Eddie] And if you do want the cookie to be,
2:10
so firm like the gingerbread,
2:14
- Yes.
2:15
- [Eddie] Would you add more molasses
2:17
to make it a little more chewy?
2:19
- Actually, I would just put one egg in it
2:23
because the more eggs you put,
2:24
the more cake like it is.
2:27
And I'm not really fond of cookies that are cake like,
2:33
you know what I mean?
2:35
I like them crispy and some chewy,
2:37
you know, in the center,
2:40
that's kind of the way I like 'em.
2:45
All right, I'm gonna transfer this to a big bowl
2:51
because after I get all this mixed up,
2:55
I'm going to be adding our flour mixture to it.
3:02
Yeah.
3:03
I'll be in search of that wonderful gingerbread cookie
3:07
that I have dreamed about.
3:10
And I guess it's been, what, maybe four years,
3:13
five years, Theresa?
3:15
- [Theresa] Gosh, longer than that.
3:18
- Since Jeff's mother-in-law made those
3:21
and shared with us.
3:23
Mm, they were so good.
3:25
All right, cream, cream, cream.
3:28
(mixer hitting side of bowl)
3:35
All right, now I'm going to add two eggs.
3:39
I wish I wasn't adding but one,
3:41
but we're gonna go with what I said
3:44
the first go round.
3:47
(mixer hitting sides of bowl)
4:01
All right, now I'm going to add our molasses.
4:05
Now this is molasses, it's not syrup.
4:10
Molasses kind of looks like motor oil.
4:13
It's real dark and real sweet.
4:29
And then we're gonna take our flour.
4:32
(mixer hitting sides of bowl)
4:37
And add it to this mixture.
4:40
To our creamed mixture.
4:44
I'm going to take this and scrape my bowl down.
4:55
There we go.
5:02
I'd love it if some of the grandchildren
5:04
would come in to help us decorate
5:08
these gingerbread men and women.
5:12
Maybe they will.
5:14
(mixer hitting sides of bowl)
5:16
Maybe somebody'll show up.
5:21
Okay.
5:23
All right, I'm going to come over here,
5:26
and we've got our flour,
5:28
and I'm adding salt, baking soda?
5:34
Don't remember if it was soda or powder.
5:36
Nutmeg, cinnamon,
5:45
and ginger.
5:47
I love ginger.
5:51
Every time I say it, Michael hears me say I love ginger,
5:53
you know what he says?
5:56
Well, actually I liked Mary Ann the best.
6:00
He's so goofy.
6:05
So, I wanna just kind of sift this together
6:10
using our little magic whisk.
6:17
All right.
6:20
So, this is a little high for me to work with,
6:23
but I think y'all can see better.
6:29
Okay, so I'm just gonna work, stir this flour in.
6:34
You know, you can use a spoon or a spatula,
6:37
and then, we've got to put this in the refrigerator y'all.
6:45
And let it set until it's firm enough
6:48
that we can roll it out and cut it.
6:53
Do our cutting out with our cookie cutters.
7:05
You know what, I said to do it with a spoon,
7:08
but I'm actually gonna finish this off with my mixer.
7:25
And when you roll these out,
7:28
you're going to want to make sure
7:29
that you roll them on a surface
7:31
that's well floured so they won't stick.
7:36
And don't worry about them looking.
7:39
Don't worry about the fact that you put down too much flour
7:43
and they gonna look white because that will bake out.
7:46
So don't worry about that.
7:48
Just make sure you have enough flour
7:50
so they won't stick.
7:55
Okay, so there it is.
8:00
Our ginger bread dough.
8:06
Smells pretty good.
8:07
It almost smells like sweet potatoes.
8:12
Come smell, Theresa,
8:13
see if this doesn't smell like a sweet potato to you.
8:16
- [Eddie] I can smell the molasses.
8:17
- You can.
8:19
Smell, smells just like a sweet potato.
8:23
- [Theresa] It does at first.
8:24
- Doesn't it.
8:25
- [Theresa] I catch another.
8:26
- So that's it.
8:27
We're going to put these in the refrigerator,
8:30
and then we're going to roll them out
8:31
and cut them and throw them in the oven.
8:33
And hopefully somebody will come help me decorate.
8:37
I think I forgot to mention this part, y'all,
8:40
but we need to work with maybe
8:44
about a half a cup of dough at the time,
8:47
because if you try to work all that dough at once,
8:50
it's really overpowering.
8:53
So we're gonna.
8:56
And remember what I've told you about the flour.
9:00
It's okay.
9:02
And after this sits in the refrigerator, y'all,
9:05
it's like hard as my arteries.
9:13
It's hard.
9:17
So if you got a big, strong man around.
9:24
Put him to work.
9:31
I don't like mine real thick.
9:34
All right, here we go.
9:38
First the girl because it's ladies first, remember.
9:43
Always ladies first.
9:49
Can see her little skirt.
9:53
Now you can find these cookie cutters
9:57
in different sizes.
10:01
These are kind of rather on the smaller side.
10:05
I kind of like the larger ones
10:09
because when you go to decorate 'em,
10:13
the smaller your surface,
10:16
the harder it is to work with.
10:19
And I done chopped off a piece of his foot.
10:22
There it is.
10:24
We just go hook it right back on there, little man.
10:30
Just hook it right back.
10:35
Okay.
10:37
You know, children have so much fun
10:43
decorating cookies at Christmas time.
10:46
I know my grandboys just love it.
10:49
And Jack's 14 now.
10:50
And you know, he still enjoys
10:55
getting in the kitchen with his grandma
10:57
and making cookies.
10:59
Jack likes to bake.
11:02
So I will see if I can't work this up.
11:05
I may mix this in with the rest of the batter
11:08
that I've gotten the refrigerator.
11:11
It's still chilling,
11:12
and see if we can't get some more gingerbread people
11:15
out of there.
11:16
But these are going to get,
11:20
It's getting towards the end of the day, y'all
11:23
I'm going to put these in the oven.
11:27
Let me see, at 350,
11:38
and bake 'em for about 10 minutes.
11:41
That's kind of the standard average number for cookies
11:45
isn't it?
11:46
350, 10 minutes.
11:47
- [Theresa] Yep.
11:49
- So that's what we gonna do with these little babies.
11:53
And you can rework this dough.
11:56
And like I said, I think it'll,
12:00
I think if I mix it with some
12:02
that's not been flowered yet,
12:06
I think it'll work real good.
12:06
So in the oven, 350, 10 minutes,
12:11
and I can tell y'all something right now.
12:16
Who's gonna decorate the most beautiful
12:20
gingerbread man and gingerbread girl ever.
12:24
Your cameraman, the college graduate from SCAD,
12:31
Savannah art and design school.
12:34
He will beat us all by far with his decorating.
12:42
But I'm still gonna try.
12:44
Okay, listen mister artiste
12:47
has already done a few,
12:49
and I want you to see how pretty they are.
12:53
Aren't they pretty?
12:55
- [Theresa] Well pick 'em.
12:57
- [Paula] Oh, pick them up.
12:57
- [Theresa] Well just show them.
12:59
- I love this one because it's got so much icing.
13:02
She's got a little white flowery dress.
13:07
- [Eddie] Oh that's a snowman.
13:11
- No this is a missus.
13:12
- [Eddie] Yeah, but I made the other side a snowman.
13:15
I made it look like a snowman.
13:17
- Where?
13:18
- You don't think it looks like a snowman?
13:19
- No, I just saw the skirt.
13:23
You know what?
13:24
It can be anything you want it to be.
13:26
And I love the fact, Eddie,
13:28
that you used the candy balls for eyes
13:32
'cause it's hard to get that small amount.
13:35
- [Theresa] So what you doing?
13:38
- So I'm going to copy you.
13:39
I'm going to copy you, and I'm going to take,
13:44
Wait, what you waiting on?
13:46
- [Theresa] I actually am going to come around
13:48
the other side
13:49
- [Paula] Come on.
13:50
- [Theresa] So I can shoot from the decorating's.
13:52
- [Paula] Come on.
13:58
This is very tedious.
14:03
Oh, he has red eyes and he's so pretty.
14:10
- [Theresa] Show her to me.
14:14
- No, it's a man.
14:15
This a man.
14:16
And I got to give him some boots, y'all.
14:24
And maybe some gloves.
14:27
Your children will have so much fun
14:32
getting in the kitchen with you.
14:34
- [Theresa] Eddie's getting really detailed over here.
14:36
- [Paula] I know.
14:37
- [Theresa] We could be here 'till Christmas.
14:38
- [Paula] I know, I know.
14:39
- [Theresa] The real Christmas day.
14:41
- But look how cute he is, Eddie.
14:43
- He is cute.
14:44
He's not overdone, is he?
14:47
- Well actually, the pink looks really nice
14:48
on top of the gingerbread.
14:50
- And you know what?
14:53
I'm going to give him some hair like peepaw.
14:58
Look at that.
14:59
Now that's peepaw's
15:06
Eddie, I think I heard a car door.
15:09
- Do you hear six little feet?
15:15
- I do. I think I do.
15:16
- Not reindeer?
15:20
- Oh my gosh.
15:20
Maybe somebody is coming to help us decorate.
15:24
The triplets gonna love these.
15:26
And I swear, I think I heard them.
15:28
- I think they are going to love the icing.
15:32
I think fingers are going all over the place.
15:33
- I think so too.
15:37
Oh gosh, that's pretty.
15:41
- [Theresa] Eddie, let me see your snowman.
15:43
Before the.
15:44
- [Eddie] Before it gets eaten?
15:46
- [Theresa] Exactly.
15:47
You've got to flip it up.
15:48
I mean it's a normal camera, people.
15:51
- [Paula] I still love mine.
15:53
The simplistic of peepaw.
15:57
There.
15:58
- Peepaw and mister snowman.
16:00
- Missus, missus.
16:01
- Well, well.
16:02
- She's got a little skirt, Eddie.
16:03
- [Theresa] Okay, guys, I hear the door.
16:07
(speaking Spanish)
16:11
- I would love to say y'all
16:13
that our brilliant triplets decorated these,
16:18
but I would be lying.
16:21
What baby, what, what, what?
16:23
But Mr. Eddie decorated those for you.
16:26
Come on, okay.
16:27
You can't make up your mind.
16:31
No, no, no, all done.
16:33
All done.
16:35
(toddlers babbling)
16:39
All done.
16:41
That is Amelia's way of saying
16:45
good to see y'all, but I'm all done.
16:50
Merry Christmas.
16:53
Merry Christmas.
16:56
Look at her polka dot dress.
17:00
Look.
17:05
- Happy!
17:07
(speaking Spanish) Happy.
17:10
(toddlers babbling)
17:12
He's saying Halloween.
17:14
- [Paula] I know. I heard him.
17:20
You gonna get down there with your sisters?
17:23
- (speaking Spanish)
17:26
- [Paula] Oh my, Ali.
17:27
That's so beautiful.
17:30
- She's a natural.
17:31
- [Paula] It's beautiful.
17:35
Thank you.
17:37
What baby?
17:38
(toddlers babbling)
17:41
- Whoa, (speaking Spanish).
17:47
Can you say gracias?
17:48
- You are so welcome, my precious.
17:51
(toddler babbling)
17:53
What? Okay.
17:56
- (speaking Spanish)
17:57
- All right, now taste it.
17:59
Take a bite.
18:00
- (speaking Spanish)
18:02
It's so good.
18:03
Taste it.
18:06
There you go.
18:08
- Yummy.
18:11
- Yum.
18:14
Yum to my tum.
18:15
This is how Gini likes to eat it, like this.
18:21
Yum!
18:23
(all laughing)
