(upbeat banjo music) - Hey, y'all.
0:02
You won't believe whose house I'm walking out of.
0:05
I'm actually walking out of the childhood home
0:08
of our President Jimmy Carter.
0:11
I'm here in Plains today to sit down
0:13
and have a chat with the president.
0:15
I wanna find out about some of his childhood memories,
0:19
his favorite foods, and all about his town.
0:22
So y'all please stay with me.
0:25
I promise you it's gonna be a wonderful,
0:27
wonderful time with one of the greatest men of our times.
0:31
So y'all please come with me.
0:34
Hi.
0:36
I've got the most spectacular day planned for us.
0:39
We're going to see President Jimmy Carter.
0:41
And I'm gonna do the breakfast,
0:43
cause like any Southern girl,
0:44
you know I can't go empty-handed.
0:46
So I've gotta have something
0:49
in the way of food to take to him.
0:50
So I have decided... I thought and thought and thought.
0:53
And I said, "Well...
0:56
Sweet rolls really go with a bed and breakfast."
0:59
So I thought,
1:00
"Well, I'll make him some of my gorilla bread,"
1:02
and it's so simple and easy.
1:03
We're gonna start with canned biscuits.
1:06
and before we open our biscuits
1:09
I'm gonna get a stick of butter melting
1:11
and a cup of brown sugar.
1:13
And before I open the biscuits I'm gonna do one more thing.
1:17
I'm actually gonna cut this cream cheese into 20 cubes,
1:23
and I always have to stop and think about this one.
1:26
All right, cause five times four is 20,
1:29
so I'm gonna go down the center
1:31
and I'm gonna get four rows out of this.
1:34
And then I'm gonna come back
1:35
and I'm gonna make one, two, three,
1:39
four, five cuts out of that.
1:43
So that will give us 20 squares,
1:47
because we have 20 biscuits
1:50
and we want a piece of cream cheese
1:52
for each biscuit that we have.
1:54
All right, and I'm gonna give this a quick stir.
1:56
All we need to do is just really get
1:59
that brown sugar melted into that butter.
2:03
While I'm working over here,
2:04
that'll finish melting.
2:05
And now I'm gonna open our can of biscuits,
2:08
I'll never forget the day I was on Ready... Set... Cook!,
2:11
and I was going- (can pops)
2:13
(chuckles) I was going up against a French chef,
2:17
and I looked over at him,
2:19
and he was just working like crazy
2:22
with a can opener and a can of biscuits,
2:25
and I looked over at him and I start hollering,
2:27
"No, no, no! Stop! Stop! Stop!"
2:30
And he wouldn't listen to me
2:31
because he thought, naturally,
2:32
I was trying to lead him astray.
2:35
Well, about that time they exploded in his face
2:37
and I just died laughing.
2:39
I thought everybody knew how to open a canned biscuit.
2:42
All right, now I'm gonna take our biscuits
2:45
and I'll do one can at a time.
2:48
I'm gonna spray our Bundt pan,
2:50
and this is a Teflon-coated,
2:52
but I'm gonna put just a little bit of spray in there.
2:55
And I'm gonna sprinkle some walnuts
2:59
(walnuts clinking) evenly around the bottom.
3:01
Now, you can use any kinda nuts you want,
3:03
but I either like pecans or walnuts.
3:06
And I'm gonna take each one of these biscuits
3:08
and I'm gonna flatten them out a little bit.
3:10
And I'm gonna cut me a chunk of cream cheese
3:15
and put it inside that biscuit.
3:19
Doesn't that sound heavenly?
3:22
And I'm going to mix some sugar
3:24
and some cinnamon together, and just stir that up.
3:28
Take the biscuit.
3:30
And I'm gonna put about half a teaspoon
3:33
of the cinnamon sugar mixture in there.
3:35
And then I'm just gonna seal that biscuit up real good
3:39
and then place it in my Bundt pan.
3:41
And I'm gonna do that
3:42
until every one of the biscuits have been done.
3:45
You'll wanna make sure
3:46
that you use a 10-count tube of biscuits,
3:50
and you'll wanna make sure that you use a quality biscuit.
3:53
These are not expensive,
3:55
so you don't wanna skimp on that.
3:57
I'm so excited about visiting this man.
4:00
I have been so fortunate in my life.
4:03
Even though this visit hasn't happened yet,
4:05
I'm literally just hours away from it happening.
4:12
Our butter and our brown sugar is separated a little,
4:15
so I'm just giving it a few stirs
4:18
to kind of incorporate that butter
4:20
back into that brown sugar.
4:22
All right, now I'm gonna sprinkle
4:24
some of our brown sugar and cinnamon over that.
4:29
And then I'm gonna take our butter mixture
4:32
and drizzle those biscuits.
4:35
And this is gonna make like a...
4:37
Have you ever had a sticky bun?
4:39
It's gonna be something like that.
4:42
With the kinda rich, caramelly sauce on top.
4:46
So we're gonna do about half of that onto that first layer.
4:51
And then I'm gonna take a few more nuts
4:53
and sprinkle over that layer,
4:55
and I'm gonna place the rest of the biscuits
4:59
that I have done on top of those.
5:03
Doesn't that look good?
5:04
Biscuits and cream cheese...
5:06
I don't believe it can get any better.
5:09
All right, here we go again
5:10
with the last of the brown sugar and butter,
5:14
making sure that it gets on every biscuit.
5:18
And I love eating this while it's still warm out of the oven
5:21
but if you can't get it straight out of the oven,
5:24
you can pop this bread into your microwave
5:28
and it's just as good.
5:31
All right.
5:32
Now we're gonna take the remainder of our cinnamon sugar
5:34
and just sprinkle over those last 10 biscuits.
5:38
The cinnamon smell is terrific.
5:41
Then we're gonna take the last of our nuts
5:44
and pour over in there.
5:46
And we're really gonna have one great big fat sticky bun.
5:52
So we're gonna put this in our oven.
5:55
And we're gonna bake it for about 50 to 60 minutes.
6:02
And I should have one over here that's ready.
6:12
Oh... Look.
6:15
This is a presidential sticky bun.
6:19
Who would have thought some little South Georgia girl
6:22
would be making something for President Jimmy Carter?
6:26
Blows my mind.
6:28
I hope he loves it,
6:29
but I think he will.
6:30
I understand that he can have a little bit of a sweet tooth.
6:34
Now I'm gonna take this,
6:36
and I'm gonna invert it onto my plate.
6:39
Now, with any luck it'll come out.
6:44
(clunk)
6:45
I heard a clunk.
6:47
That's a good sign.
6:52
Y'all ready for the unveiling?
6:55
How does it look?
6:58
Does that look okay?
7:00
(gasps) I think he's gonna just love it.
7:03
I don't know about y'all,
7:04
but I'm ready to go see Mr. Jimmy,
7:07
cause we don't wanna keep a president waiting, do we?
7:12
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
7:15
And if you do.
7:16
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
7:19
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
7:23
And we'll be right back after the break.
7:30
- Welcome back, y'all.
7:31
I'm actually standing in the personal
7:34
pecan grove of Miss Lillian Carter.
7:37
Miss Lillian was President Jimmy Carter's mother.
7:40
She actually harvested the nuts off of these trees
7:44
to help feed, and clothe, and educate her children.
7:48
And I happen to know
7:50
that one of President Carter's favorite foods is pecans.
7:55
So I have cooked him up something
7:56
extra special to serve him up today.
8:00
Well, we've got our gooey and gorgeous gorilla bread,
8:03
and these hot, fresh scones to take to President Carter.
8:06
And do you know he still lives
8:07
in the small town he was born in?
8:09
Plains, Georgia,
8:10
which is actually just a few miles
8:12
down the road from my hometown of Albany.
8:15
And I visited it many times,
8:18
but I've never seen such a beautiful bed and breakfast
8:21
as the one Mr. Carter helped build on the main street.
8:24
And true to his character,
8:26
he actually constructed it along with other volunteers.
8:30
In fact, this bed in the presidential suite
8:33
was built by President Carter's very own hands.
8:37
His wife, Rosalynn,
8:38
supervised a different decor in the period theme rooms,
8:42
and the generosity of workers and sponsors
8:44
has created a historic gym well worth visiting.
8:48
But I wanted to catch up
8:50
with my own favorite president
8:52
about some of his own history,
8:54
and that of the town he loves so much.
8:58
What store are we standing in front of?
9:00
- Well, when my father had a warehouse here
9:03
a business, an insurance business,
9:05
so when I came home from the Navy,
9:06
this was my first office.
9:08
And so I lived here until...
9:11
I guess about seven or eight years,
9:13
and then finally built another office building.
9:14
But this was original Carter's warehouse.
9:17
And this was a grocery store.
9:19
And my uncle Elton, my daddy's brother,
9:23
had a grocery store down here,
9:25
and so did my father, by the way.
9:27
And so all of these were very wide open
9:31
operating on Saturday night in particular,
9:33
because folks didn't have automobiles to ride around in.
9:37
There were no pick up trucks.
9:38
Then they rode in wagons or either walked,
9:39
so once a week they would come to Plains.
9:41
This, by the way, was a bank building.
9:43
It was built in 1901, as...
9:45
Well, most of this...
9:46
Most of the places along the way.
9:48
And so we've converted the bank building
9:51
into the Old Bank Cafe.
9:53
- I've eaten here before.
9:55
- It's a good place to eat. - It's a good place to eat.
9:57
- We have a couple of really good restaurants in town.
9:59
And then this next store here
10:00
was my uncle's Plains mercantile company.
10:03
And sometimes on Saturdays,
10:05
and particularly during the Christmas holidays,
10:07
I worked in this store. - [Paula] Yes, sir.
10:08
- They had a wonderful store upstairs for women's goods
10:12
where men couldn't even go upstairs.
10:14
(laughs) Well, they had- - [Paula] Not allowed.
10:16
- [Jimmy] They had unmentionables up there.
10:18
- [Paula] Slips and stuff like that.
10:19
- [Jimmy] Oh... (laughs)
10:20
We wouldn't have said those words back in those days.
10:23
And they had a whole bunch of mannequins up there,
10:28
and they would put the latest
10:29
women's styles on the mannequins.
10:31
And ladies would come from all around
10:33
this part of the state to shop here and...
10:38
- For their foundations. - Yeah, and my uncle...
10:40
For the foundations and those things.
10:41
And my uncles would send his bar up
10:44
to New York City every year, twice a year,
10:48
in the spring to buy fall fashions,
10:50
and in the fall to buy spring fashions.
10:52
So latest styles here in Plains.
10:55
This was a good mercantile store,
10:56
had everything in it that you can imagine.
10:59
- But as much as I enjoy learning about
11:01
the president's family and hometown,
11:03
as a southerner myself,
11:05
I've always been curious
11:07
as to why he stayed so close to home.
11:11
- Well, first of all,
11:12
this is where my family's been since 1860.
11:16
It's where Rosa's family's been since 1833
11:18
when the Indians left, so our land is here.
11:22
Our churches are here.
11:24
Our family still lives here.
11:26
The only home we've ever owned is here in Plains.
11:29
And we are where we belong to be.
11:31
It's just a matter of a haven that Rosa and I
11:36
have always chosen without argument, I might say.
11:38
- Something else that just fascinated me
11:41
(chuckles) is your business mind.
11:43
It started when you were four,
11:45
as early as four years old, didn't it?
11:48
The biggest thing that amazed me, though,
11:51
was at eight years old you became a property owner.
11:55
- Yes, I owned five houses when I was eight years old.
11:59
- Eight years old.
12:00
- And I had saved up a dollar a day all during
12:02
the entire peanut season every year for four years.
12:07
And I had enough money when cotton
12:09
got down to five cents a pound,
12:10
the lowest price it had ever got in the United States.
12:13
I had enough money to buy five bales of cotton,
12:16
and I put them in one of my daddy's store houses,
12:18
and when it got up to 18 cents a pound we sold it,
12:21
made a big profit, and the undertaker in Plains,
12:25
who owned part of a building where the inn is now,
12:29
he had died, and so I bought five houses from him.
12:33
And so the total rent on my houses was $18-and-a-half.
12:37
For five houses the total rent was 1,850.
12:40
Two of them rented for $2 and the biggest ones for $5.
12:43
And when I went off to be in the Navy to the Naval Academy,
12:46
I was still collecting $18-and-a-half rent.
12:49
So I was an entrepreneur
12:50
and a property owner as a little boy.
12:53
- That's amazing, because at eight,
12:55
I don't think I had learned to tie my shoes yet.
12:57
(laughs)
12:58
But I desperately wanted to ask Mr. Jimmy,
13:01
as he prefers to be known around his hometown,
13:04
what his food memories were growing up in Plains.
13:07
- Well, my favorite memory was our Sunday meals,
13:10
and we always had either chicken pie or fried chicken,
13:13
plus mashed potatoes, and rice,
13:16
and gravy, and hot biscuits with butter.
13:19
And then we generally had the vegetables at that time,
13:23
collard greens, turnip greens,
13:24
black-eyed peas, butter beans, sweet corn.
13:28
And then we almost always had banana pudding
13:32
or strawberry shortcake for dessert.
13:35
Just a few simple things like that.
13:37
And one of my favorite desserts, really,
13:40
because I ate it at the end of the meal
13:41
because it was so precious,
13:42
was corn bread crumbled up in buttermilk
13:46
and eaten with a spoon. That is so good.
13:48
- [Paula] Well, I have a few things that I have made-
13:52
- [Jimmy] Oh, really? - For you to taste
13:53
if you would agree to it,
13:56
and I hope you love them.
13:57
Can we walk across the street?
13:58
- I'm looking forward to it. (smooth music)
14:00
I'd be delighted.
14:01
Hurry back, because I can't wait to show you
14:04
how President Carter enjoyed my gorilla bread.
14:07
And then he had a surprise for me.
14:14
I hope y'all are enjoying the show
14:16
and I want to hear from you.
14:17
Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me
14:20
make by just leaving a short comment below.
14:24
Now, let's get back to the show, y'all.
14:30
Welcome back, y'all, to one of the best days of my life.
14:34
I was so proud to spend time
14:36
with a man that I admired so much.
14:38
And as you can imagine,
14:40
I was excited about him tasting my food,
14:43
but I did worry that the scones
14:45
and the gorilla bread that looked so good in my kitchen
14:48
may be a little too humble for this occasion,
14:51
but as y'all will see,
14:52
it appears my favorite president
14:54
has an appetite as big as his heart.
14:58
What you wanna taste first?
15:00
- Oh, I think I... Well, how about one of...
15:02
I'll take a bite of the scone. - A scone?
15:04
- Do I just get one? - Yes, sir. Just get one.
15:05
And I don't know that...
15:07
I brought you some straw...
15:08
Oh, here's the strawberry figs for you to taste it with.
15:11
I made these- - Oh, really?
15:12
- I made these week before last off of my fig tree.
15:17
And let's see- - Oh, wow.
15:18
- If I can... (jar pops)
15:21
There ya go.
15:22
And there's your fork.
15:24
Scones are...
15:25
They're a little different from our biscuits, aren't they?
15:27
- Yeah, I know. Yeah. - To me they're more drier
15:29
and you need something good and wet.
15:31
Will that do? - Yeah, eats right.
15:32
- All right. Look at him lick that. (chuckles)
15:37
The gorilla bread is so good.
15:40
- [Jimmy] You cooked this?
15:41
- Yes, sir. I made this just for you.
15:45
This may be a little messy because it's been traveling.
15:49
- All right, that looks beautiful.
15:53
Mm. It's all right. (laughs)
15:55
- It's the gorilla in it. - It is. (laughs)
15:58
- I just love it.
16:01
- Got Georgia pecans in it. - Yes, sir.
16:04
- That is great.
16:05
- [Paula] I was just so happy that Mr. Jimmy
16:08
liked my gorilla bread and scones,
16:10
but now he has a surprise for me.
16:12
Yes, that's right.
16:14
Mr. Carter wanted to introduce me to his favorite cook
16:18
and local celebrity, Maggie Crimes.
16:21
Her home style restaurant
16:22
has fed Mr. Carter and his family for years.
16:25
So when you come back,
16:26
we'll learn a little bit about
16:28
pleasing the presidential palate.
16:34
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
16:37
And if you do.
16:38
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
16:41
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
16:45
And we'll be right back after the break.
16:57
Welcome back to my great day in Plains
16:59
with President Jimmy Carter,
17:01
who was kind enough to ask his friend
17:03
and favorite cook Maggie Crimes
17:05
to share some of her legendary fried chicken with us.
17:08
And this isn't just any old chicken.
17:11
It's Mr. Jimmy's lifelong favorite.
17:15
- Paula's a great cook, but...
17:19
- [Paula] Uh-oh! (laughs)
17:20
- In Plains, nobody could compete with you.
17:24
- I may be in trouble here. - No, you're not in trouble.
17:26
- I've heard about you, dear. - Is that right?
17:28
- Yes, ma'am.
17:29
I have heard about you
17:30
and your food through not just Mr. Jimmy,
17:33
but other folks here in town- - Okay.
17:35
- And it's all been good. - Thank you. Well, I-
17:38
- So you got some secrets to tell me?
17:40
- No, ma'am. (laughs)
17:41
The only thing I got to say is it's seasoned good.
17:44
- [Paula] Absolutely, yes.
17:46
- [Maggie] And that's where you get the taste wrong.
17:47
- And you know what I think, ma'am?
17:50
- What, honey?
17:51
- That southerners use that makes it so good...
17:56
Tremendous amount of love. - Yes.
17:58
- I know that you have put your heart into that place.
18:01
- Yes, ma'am. Yes, ma'am.
18:03
Everything that I fix I wanna make sure it tastes right,
18:08
and if it tastes right to me,
18:09
then it should taste right to you.
18:11
- You want a bite of chicken? - Yes, sir. (laughs)
18:13
Thank you. - I saved you some.
18:14
- A lot of places I had chicken-
18:15
- This is my favorite part. - A lot of places I been-
18:18
- The wing. - Been out to eat,
18:20
and what the trouble with the food...
18:22
They cut short on seasoning.
18:25
You don't even have seasoned food
18:26
to the taste to make it taste right.
18:29
- I think the only thing that we differ on,
18:33
which surprises me, is...
18:35
Oh, I think I just lost my piece of pecan pie.
18:38
- No. (laughs)
18:40
- Well, you have to share it with us.
18:42
(laughs)
18:43
- I say pee-can? Y'all say... - Pee-con.
18:46
- Pee-con. - Will do.
18:48
- It's all the same.
18:48
There are four different ways
18:49
to pronounce that delicious nut:
18:52
peecan, pee-con, pe-can, and pe-con.
18:58
So you put the accent on different syllables
19:00
and you pronounce the "an.".
19:01
But even when you go to- - That's wonderful.
19:03
No matter what you call it, it's wonderful.
19:05
- Even when you go
19:06
to an international convention about pecans,
19:09
they pronounce it four different ways.
19:12
And I sometimes change the way I pronounce it.
19:14
- Well, I wanna thank y'all so much.
19:16
I hope that one day I'll have grandchildren
19:19
to be able to tell this story to.
19:20
- Well, if not, you can show them the photo. (chuckles)
19:22
- You mean so much to so many people.
19:26
- Wow. - That's the truth.
19:27
- Thank you very much. - We all love you so much.
19:30

19:33
is not only the love that exists,
19:35
but also having Maggie Crimes here.

19:40
(laughs)
19:42
- I know you- - And I love him.
19:43
- Make him feel good from the inside out.
19:46
- And it makes me feel good, too.
19:48

19:49
He don't come regular.
19:50
Now, sometimes I think about going to his house,
19:52
but then I'd get shot. (laughs)
19:53
- But you know what?
19:54
Maggie wants this for us to eat every meal there, so...
19:56
(laughs)
19:57
- You know what?
19:58
Mr. Jimmy, if you ate every meal there,
20:00
you might not could get in your car.
20:01
- That's right. I know. (laughs)
20:03
Oh, it was you! - Always me.
20:04
- Well, this has been great. (smooth music)
20:06
- I had so much fun visiting with President Jimmy Carter
20:09
and his adorable hometown of Plains, Georgia.
20:12
The bed and breakfast was just perfect.
20:14
It was an honor to cook up some goodies for him.
20:17
And I was so excited
20:18
that I got to meet his favorite cook, Maggie.
20:21
Her home style cooking was incredible.
20:24
I wanna thank y'all so much for spending time with me today
20:28
along with president Carter.
20:29

20:33
to be with such a great man. (smooth music)
