0:01
Come on in the kitchen because I am fixing to mix up
0:04
a wonderful drink and this can be for the adults
0:12
Because if you won't like vodka in yours,
0:15
then you would add it to your glass, not the whole pitcher,
0:19
unless you know, you're serving all adults.
0:23
Alright, so we've got our watermelon
0:25
and let's talk about how you select a watermelon.
0:29
The first thing you want to look at, you know,
0:32
people go thumpin', but see that,
0:34
now that sounds hollow right there doesn't it.
0:36
The first thing you want to look at is
0:43
the side of the watermelon
0:45
that's actually sitting on the ground.
0:49
And you can see what a pretty,
0:53
almost yellow color that has,
0:57
the creamy or yellow that,
1:00
the base of your watermelon has,
1:04
that's going to let you know, excuse me.
1:07
That's going to let you know if it's ripe or not.
1:09
So where it sat on the ground,
1:12
if it's a nice, creamy, yellow, then it's ripe.
1:17
And the next step you can do is just thump down here.
1:21
And it's, if it sounds hollow,
1:24
that means it's ripe as well.
1:26
So Teresa actually started cutting on this watermelon.
1:35
I'm gonna share with y'all how to actually cut a watermelon,
1:40
but I'm not going to be able to do it completely,
1:46
Typically the way you would slice a watermelon
1:50
is to cut the end of it off.
1:57
Get out of there, frogs.
2:00
You would cut this off
2:04
and give yourself a flat place to sit.
2:08
So we're going to pretend like that's what we've done.
2:13
You have to have a very sharp knife, which I do not.
2:18
I do not have a sharp knife.
2:21
I've got to take all my knives to be sharpened.
2:26
You just want to come down, with a sharp knife.
2:32
This is a little safer, you know, then,
2:36
you know, going like this with the knife
2:39
and possibly slip and hurt yourself.
2:43
So we're just going to get that skin off.
2:47
And if you like pickles,
2:50
I used to make watermelon rind pickles.
2:54
Just using this beautiful rind,
2:57
not using the actual fruit
3:02
and they are very very good.
3:05
Alright, so here we go.
3:10
We're getting it this watermelon.
3:20
I've got a recipe for a watermelon salad
3:24
that is so delicious.
3:27
Alright. I gonna try stand this up and cut that,
3:38
We just go finish cleaning that up.
3:45
And y'all ever make watermelon basket stowed your fruit.
3:49
I've done that before, and that can be a fun project.
3:56
But before I go today,
3:58
I want to just quickly read off
4:02
my watermelon salad recipe for you
4:05
because it is delicious.
4:13
Alright I just want to get on that white part,
4:25
So we're just gonna to cut it into chunks.
4:30
Just like this, that a nature part.
4:36
There we go. So so simple and so easy.
4:40
As long as you have a sharp knife.
4:47
in the other direction.
4:49
Like I said, about an inch apart.
4:54
Because I like the spears.
4:59
And if I'm feeding my grandchildren,
5:03
this works out real good for them.
5:06
Real easy for them to hold.
5:13
I didn't know this y'all,
5:25
So I said, I'm just eating watermelon for dinner.
5:32
And I would fix me a great big bowl,
5:38
I'm getting a salt shaker.
5:43
And then one day I was looking up carbs and calories.
5:50
this diet that I was owned by eating watermelon at night,
5:54
it is full of carbohydrates y'all.
5:58
Absolutely forward, straight sugar.
6:02
So, if you're a diabetic,
6:05
you'll need to enjoy this in majored amounts,
6:12
And now only lay out so long to season is just so long.
6:15
So they'll be gone anyway real soon, right.
6:19
So we have to eat them while we got them.
6:22
Alright so the drink I'm going to share with y'all today
6:27
It's like a cup of water, two thirds, a cup of sugar.
6:32
And you just heat that
6:35
until the sugar is dissolved real well.
6:37
And then it'll begin to thicken up a little.
6:40
You can see it's just got a slight thickness to it.
6:47
a tablespoon of lemon juice.
6:50
So I'm going to put that in a blender.
6:54
And the simple syrup.
6:58
Um, that smells good.
7:02
And now I'm gonna put
7:12
and depending on how fruity you want it.
7:19
I'm going to put a good bit.
7:24
And now we're going to add the ice,
7:29
kinda going to be like a slushy y'all.
7:33
All right. This is not my blender, it's my son's blender.
7:38
So let me, let me see if I can.
7:52
- Yes. I knew Bobby would have a good mixer because they,
7:56
I mean a good blender.
8:05
She makes a lot of smoothies.
8:11
And in order to do that you have to have a good blender.
8:23
Sorry about that y'all.
8:28
Okay I don't want to put too much ice
8:30
because I want it to be sweet.
8:44
Right, I'm going to taste it now
8:47
and see if it needs a little bit more fruit.
8:54
Oh my gosh, looks like a margarita kind of.
9:04
I think it's the perfect amount of watermelon.
9:09
So I'm just gonna pour me up a glass.
9:13
And for those of you who want a cocktail,
9:18
all you have to do is add your vodka to your glass
9:24
and go find you a rocking chair.
9:28
And have a seat and sip on this wonderful
9:36
But before we go, before I go, I want to, this is so good.
9:45
I know y'all want me to get out the vodka for y'all
9:50
- [Teresa] No, I like it just like that.
9:52
- You like it like this. - [Teresa] Yes.
9:59
Okay. Y'all before we go, I want to,
10:03
I got a back freeze.
10:04
I was drinking this so fast. Oh.
10:08
Most people get a brain freeze. I can get a back freeze.
10:18
So since we've got the watermelon,
10:20
I would love for y'all to try this salad
10:23
because it's so good
10:24
and it's different from a drink
10:28
or just eating a bowl of cut watermelon.
10:33
You need a half of a small watermelon,
10:36
which is about maybe a five pound watermelon,
10:41
one medium vadde onion.
10:44
And if you can't find vadde, use a like a Texas sweet.
10:49
But just make sure it says sweet onion.
10:50
I need a fourth of a cup of red wine vinegar,
10:54
salt and freshly ground black pepper,
10:59
a half a cup of extra virgin olive oil,
11:03
two tablespoons of chopped fresh mint
11:07
and four ounces of feta cheese crumbled.
11:14
So you just cut the flesh from the melon
11:17
into bite size pieces
11:19
and peel and slice your onions into thin rings
11:23
and in a bowl combine the vinegar, a large pinch of salt
11:27
and a few liberal grindings of pepper.
11:29
And just whisk until your salt is dissolved.
11:33
And then slowly whisk in olive oil
11:36
and toss that over your cubed watermelon,
11:41
and garnish it with some fresh mint sprigs.
11:45
And it is delicious.
11:49
So no matter how you want to enjoy your watermelon,
11:55
just make sure you pick out a good one to start with.
11:58
The number one rule, ways to pick you out
12:01
a fresh watermelon, a right watermelon.
12:06
Loving best dishes y'all.
12:08
Go get the vodka for Eddie, Teresa.
