- Hey everybody, it's Bobby here today.
0:02
Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there
0:04
and to my mom.
0:05
And, today, I'm gonna make a really great,
0:08
I hope it's really great, recipe from my mom's magazine.
0:12
And it is a summer squash lasagna recipe.
0:17
So, it's, it sounds great to me.
0:20
I've looked at the recipe, it sounds really good.
0:22
It's not gonna be just a vegetable squash,
0:25
it's gonna be a mix of vegetable and turkey.
0:27
So I'm pretty excited about it.
0:29
We're starting with these beautiful squash that we've cut
0:32
with a mandolin and we've salted the squash
0:34
and we've salted it in an effort to get the water out of it
0:38
'cause vegetables, fruits, they're largely water.
0:40
And when we make our lasagna,
0:41
we don't want a watery pool of mess.
0:44
So, putting the salt on it for a few minutes,
0:46
15 or 20 minutes, really draws that water out.
0:48
And Ed, if you can get in close, I think that you can see
0:52
on the top of the squash,
0:53
you can see the water that's been drawn out of it
0:55
from the salt.
0:57
So, what we're gonna do is we're just gonna pat it dry,
1:01
just to get rid of some of that moisture.
1:04
Okay, cool.
1:04
So, we've patted our squash dry. It's good to go.
1:07
Let's move over here to the stove top
1:10
where our onions are already kind of translucent.
1:14
We started them a few minutes ago,
1:15
I started them in olive oil.
1:20
And I've got them just on a low heat
1:23
and they look really good.
1:24
So, I'm gonna go ahead and add my turkey to this.
1:36
And we will just cook it until it's brown.
1:44
Yeah, it's beautiful lean turkey.
1:46
This would be a really good combination
1:48
of the turkey and the little bit of plastic.
1:52
The turkey and the squash together,
1:53
this should be really, really nice.
1:56
Okay, so, I'm gonna let this turkey cook for a minute.
2:00
We'll come over and go ahead
2:01
and start to put together our first bowl of goodies.
2:05
It's gonna be the tomatoes.
2:13
I've got a riveted audience
2:14
right on the other side of the camera.
2:18
Some Italian seasoning.
2:21
That's the executive chef, I'm just the sous.
2:24
So, now I'm nervous 'cause the chef is watching me.
2:28
And our garlic. We'll mix this up.
2:31
This is gonna be one of the layers in our lasagna.
2:36
So, with lasagnas, obviously, you got a base
2:39
and then you got noodles
2:42
and another layer and more noodles or meat or what have you.
2:47
Oh, hey.
2:47
Speaking of chefs over my shoulder,
2:49
there's another one right now.
2:50
I recognize that voice.
2:51
- [Paula] I didn't say cook, I said cook.
2:54
- Okay. Hey, mama. Happy mother's day.
2:57
- Got a cook. Thank you.
2:58
It's nice to have a man in the house.
3:01
Hey people, don't take no offense to that, all right?
3:03
- At the stove, at the stove, let me be clear.
3:09
At the stove, cooking.
3:10
- Yeah, he's the captain.
3:14
- Yes, he is the captain.
3:16
- He's got responsibilities.
3:21
Okay, so, we'll go to our next bowl here,
3:27
and we're gonna put together ricotta cheese.
3:31
Calls for four cups, so, we're gonna use the whole container
3:38
of ricotta cheese.
3:42
- [Paula] Oh, that cup it's so...
3:46
(spoon clattering)
3:48
- It's hard to believe it's already mother's day, 2026.
3:57
- [Paula] I know, I have.
4:02
- Goodness gracious. Come on, ricotta.
4:07
There we go. So, there's our ricotta cheese,
4:09
we will add to that Parmesan cheese.
4:15
The remaining Italian seasoning and the recipe.
4:21
And also a little more garlic.
4:28
And we will mix this together.
4:31
So, this looks really good.
4:35
And well mixed.
4:41
Okay, so back to the turkey, which is getting close,
4:45
but it's not quite ready,
4:46
so this would be a good time for us to take a break while,
4:50
make sure I've got everything I need
4:52
and we'll come right back.
4:53
Turkey's beautiful. Cooked it and drained it.
4:56
And we got a good,
4:57
got a good amount of liquid from the turkey.
5:01
So, now the fun part, right?
5:04
We're going to begin the process of making our
5:08
lasagna with the layers.
5:10
I'm gonna start with about a half cup,
5:11
now with a half cup of our tomato mixture in the bottom.
5:20
(spoon clattering)
5:21
Spread that out evenly.
5:26
(spoon clattering)
5:35
Looks pretty even.
5:37
And then we will add about half of our noodles.
5:43
Now the squash, everybody,
5:47
the recipe costs for three squash.
5:50
You know how vegetables and fruits and stuff are,
5:52
they can be in different sizes.
5:54
So, you might have smaller squash,
5:56
you might not be able to use three, two might be enough,
6:00
or you might need four, it just depends on the size of your,
6:05
you know, squash.
6:07
So, let's see.
6:09
The tomato mixture, the noodles,
6:12
and squash on top of the noodles, so here we go.
6:17
That is some beautiful yellow squash.
6:19
Now, these were cut, you'll see how uniform they are.
6:22
These were cut with a mandolin,
6:25
which is a great kitchen tool,
6:28
but, you gotta be really careful with a mandolin,
6:31
they'll take your finger off.
6:33
They'll take your,
6:34
okay, I only got room for one more squash,
6:36
so let me pick a real good piece.
6:38
Now, the rest of it, you know what we'll do with that?
6:40
I'll put a little bit of olive oil on that
6:43
and we will put that in the air fryer
6:45
if whatever we don't use.
6:47
Okay, so, on top of the squash
6:52
and that'll be a nice little appetite, sir.
6:56
We'll add some ricotta.
7:00
Mom, this recipe is gonna be great.
7:01
- [Paula] Good.
7:04
Think be happy.
7:09
- Okay. We'll spread this evenly.
7:12
The ricotta looks great
7:14
and I've leveled it out as much as I could.
7:17
And now, here comes the turkey.
7:20
And we're looking at this recipe as we put it together.
7:23
And this is a two and a half quart container,
7:26
which is what the recipe calls for,
7:27
but, we all here think
7:30
that if you wanted to use a 9 by 13, you could.
7:33
- [Paula] Definitively.
7:34
- Yeah, you could use a bigger vessel if you wanted to
7:39
and you'd be able to get more layers.
7:42
(utensils clattering)
7:45
Okay.
7:56
Turkeys with tomato.
8:03
And we'll take one more break while I finish this up
8:06
and we'll come right back.
8:08
So, the last layer of tomatoes
8:12
and then we will add the last of the squash.
8:15
And we have a very full.
8:19
But that's the way it should be, I think,
8:21
a very full, very hearty lasagna dish.
8:26
That looks real good too.
8:29
So, we've got our oven preheating.
8:32
We'll get our layers all put together,
8:34
we will pop it in the oven,
8:37
and then we will finish it off
8:39
with a little bit of shredded Parmesan.
8:44
Or excuse me, shredded mozzarella right on top.
8:50
Okay.
9:03
Voila. That's beautiful.
9:05
- [Person] It's pretty pretty.
9:06
Okay, so let's go into the oven with it. Okay?
9:09
Think our lasagna is nearly ready,
9:11
so we're gonna go ahead and pull it out
9:12
and top it with the mozzarella cheese.
9:22
Yeah, it's looking really good.
9:28
(packet rustling)
9:39
Ooh, that thing smells good. It really smells, smells great.
9:43
I think it's gonna be great.
9:47
This is gonna be a home run.
9:53
Look at Paula Deen using vegetables in her lasagna.
10:00
So good.
10:02
I'm gonna quit messing around
10:03
and I'm just gonna use all of this cheese.
10:09
And so, back in for about five more minutes. That's hot.
10:17
And then we'll come right back.
10:19
I know I'm gonna burn myself tasting it, but, oh well.
10:27
- [Person] You and your mama can't help yourself.
10:29
- Here goes nothing.
10:33
First I wanna taste the squash.
10:39
Very good.
10:42
It's not mushy and soggy,
10:44
I still got a little bit of a bite to it.
10:47
- [Person] I like it like that.
10:47
- I'm a little bit of a snap, me too.
10:49
Little bit of a snap to it. Perfect.
10:54
- [Person] So, you could cook that as long as you wanted.
10:56
If you wanted your vegetable cook longer,
10:58
just don't put your cheese on until-
11:00
- That's exactly it.
11:01
- [Person] Till you're really-
11:02
- Till you're ready to fill it out in five minutes.
11:03
- [Person] Yeah. That's the ticket.
11:07
(utensils clattering)
11:13
- Very good.
11:15
Very hot.
11:19
Super tasty.
11:21
The squash really helps it a lot.
11:25
Turkey's good. Different than ground beef, obviously.
11:28
Really nice.
11:29
I think that turkey is a good choice with the squash
11:32
'cause it's like light and light,
11:35
and what I mean is like in color,
11:36
do you know what I mean?
11:39
The turkey is like blondish and the squash is like blondish
11:42
and they both sort of taste like blondish.
11:45
But, the tomato with it is great.
11:47
And it is, it's really, really good lasagna,
11:49
so, please enjoy.
11:51
I think that you'll like it.
11:52
And get your kids to enjoy it too
11:54
to get their vegetables.
11:56
Mama, it's good.
11:57
- [Paula] Good. I'm so-
11:58
- Come here see ya.
11:59
So, see you later, alligator. It's really good.
12:04
- [Paula] Ooh.
12:07
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
