- So, while Jack and I were in the kitchen making lasagna,
0:06
the thought went through our head
0:08
that an interview would be nice
0:12
because he just finished his fresh...
0:16
Excuse me.
0:18
He just finished up his freshman year at Harvard University.
0:24
And I cannot tell you how proud the family is of him
0:31
and the hard work that he has put in now for 13 years.
0:35
- Yep.
0:36
- Or probably 14,
0:37
because you probably started,
0:41
probably started like a four year play school.
0:44
- Yeah, probably around.
0:46
- So it's been many, many years.
0:48
But I just felt like people would be real interested
0:53
from your perception,
0:56
from your...
0:58
- Perspective.
0:59
- Thank you.
1:00
See? See what he teaches his granny.
1:04
Yes, from your perspective.
1:06
And so, what would you like to share with us?
1:11
- I love to.
1:12
First of all, I just want to say, hey y'all,
1:13
it's so good to be back, be here with you.
1:15
I feel like, last time, I was
1:17
on the channel might've been maybe a year or so ago.
1:20
- Yeah.
1:21
- So before I went off to college and all that.
1:22
But every time I come on,
1:23
everyone's always so nice in the comments
1:25
and you know, it's-
1:26
- So it takes him back 20 years ago.
1:28
- I know.
1:29
Everyone always says,
1:30
"I remember you being born and everything."
1:32
It's so funny.
1:34
So yeah, I'm always happy to be back.
1:36
Good to be here with y'all.
1:37
- So was it a shock to you, Jack,
1:40
to be so far away from home
1:44
in a totally, totally different environment
1:47
than what you were used to?
1:48
- That's the thing
1:49
that I wasn't really expecting about going to college.
1:51
You know, I was really focused on
1:53
the academics of everything,
1:54
because obviously, Harvard is pretty hard.
1:57
I stayed pretty busy with my studies.
2:01
But really the things that you would never expect is
2:03
what made it difficult was the weather.
2:06
I don't know if any of y'all live in
2:08
Massachusetts or up north, but I pray for you every day,
2:11
because I thought I wasn't going to make it
2:14
at multiple times and the cold.
2:16
It gets dark so early compared to here.
2:19
- Yeah.
2:20
- I used to just fantasize about coming home
2:22
and seeing the marsh again
2:23
and the heat. - Yes.
2:24
- And here we have like 100 degree summers,
2:26
and I used to think that was bad.
2:28
And I thought about the 100 degree weather all year long.
2:32
That's all I wanted to do is come back.
2:33
- And he texted us one time
2:35
and said his eyelashes were frozen.
2:38
- Yeah.
2:39
- But his Pepaw,
2:43
half the grandchildren call him, call Michael, Papa,
2:48
and the other half calls him Pepaw.
2:50
- Yeah.
2:52
- And so Pepaw went out
2:54
and talked with Jack and made sure he had the warmest coat-
2:58
- Oh, wow.
3:00
- That you could get.
3:00
- Yeah, that's true.
3:01
- So, he wanted you to survive.
3:03
- Yeah. So the cold was a shock.
3:05
But other than that it was a great year.
3:07
I made a lot of great friends.
3:08
I learned a lot of stuff at school.
3:10
But, you know, most of everything I learned wasn't,
3:13
related to academics.
3:14
I did learn a lot.
3:15
I'm majoring in economics and getting a minor in psychology.
3:19
So those are two fields of study which I enjoy.
3:22
But most of everything I learned, you go to college
3:24
and you don't realize how much of it is just about living
3:27
and how to be on your own,
3:28
because you're used
3:29
to your parents doing everything for you.
3:31
- Yeah. - Or at least helping out.
3:32
And then you go to college just like, boom,
3:34
I'm three states away
3:36
and you know, I gotta figure out
3:38
how to do everything on my own.
3:39
So that was the biggest thing.
3:41
I miss my family a lot.
3:42
It is difficult being far away.
3:44
- But you were very fortunate in the fact
3:46
that there's a direct between Savannah and Boston.
3:48
- That's true.
3:49
- So there was an extra effort to get you home
3:54
at least once a month I would say that you came home.
3:58
And so that helped us all survive.
4:01
- Yeah, and so I guess
4:04
if any of y'all watching are my age
4:06
or you have grandchildren or children who are my age
4:09
and getting them ready for college,
4:10
I would just say the biggest thing is to prepare them
4:13
for living on their own
4:15
and just the initiative that you're going to have to take
4:18
because that's the biggest thing.
4:19
You'll study, you'll make it through classes
4:20
you'll be good at it there
4:21
but the biggest thing is making sure
4:23
that you build a routine of things that you still like to do
4:27
and just being able to live as efficiently.
4:30
- And what were those things
4:32
that you made sure you didn't lose in Boston?
4:38
- Well, you get very, very busy.
4:39
At least with school, I was studying
4:41
for maybe eight to 12 hours a day
4:45
each day- - I know, I know.
4:46
- Just to be able to keep up with my work.
4:49
So you have to be able to make sure
4:50
that you still do the things you like.
4:53
So I made sure to go to the gym every day,
4:56
to stay consistent and that way call my family often
4:59
and just make sure you keep doing things
5:01
that make you happy, that are important to you.
5:03
You don't get caught up in the schoolwork.
5:05
- And how about the different
5:11
diversified group of people
5:13
that you have become friends with?
5:15
- Yeah, I mean, all my friends are from all over America
5:19
and you know, it was definitely-
5:21
- Probably out of America too.
5:22
- A few of them are. Yeah.
5:24
So it was definitely eye-opening to be able
5:27
to meet so many interesting people from different places.
5:29
Because at Harvard, they pull from everywhere.
5:32
You have people from overseas, everywhere in America.
5:35
The south has the smallest representation.
5:37
I think there's only 22 Georgians who got in this year.
5:40
- No. (indistinct)
5:41
- I know them all.
5:43
- Oh, you do? - Yeah.
5:44
So shout out to them if they're watching.
5:47
- It's good to hear somebody else say y'all.
5:49
- Yeah. Oh, yeah.
5:52
Well, all my friends say y'all now
5:53
because I say it all the time.
5:54
They've kind of picked up
5:55
on the southern dialect little bit.
5:57
- Good.
5:58
Well, the thing is Jack, that some of these special people
6:03
that you've made friends with,
6:05
when you're 50 years old,
6:07
hopefully you'll still have a relationship
6:10
with these people.
6:11
- That's true.
6:11
- Who knows?
6:14
You could be
6:16
in a dorm with the future president of America.
6:19
- Yeah. I mean, that's probably not unlikely.
6:21
There probably is a president there right now-
6:23
- Right.
6:24
- Which it's pretty cool to really meet people.
6:26
- Right. I mean, it could be you.
6:28
- Maybe. I don't know but let's see.
6:32
- And you shared with me
6:34
that you met a girl that you really like and admire.
6:38
- Yeah, I just got a girlfriend too.
6:40
We've been dating for about a month
6:42
so that's been really awesome and fun.
6:45
You know, that's another thing to add to my busy schedule,
6:47
but is definitely work but it's very fun.
6:50
- And that helps when you can connect
6:53
with the opposite sex and...
6:57
- Well, after going to an all boys school.
7:00
I went to all boys high school for four years.
7:03
So then you get to go to college
7:04
and be around girls, it's a different environment.
7:07
- Wow. Where'd y'all come from?
7:08
- Yeah. Yeah.
7:11
- Well, I love you so very much
7:13
and I'm so proud of you and Matthew.
7:16
And then Davis is coming up.
7:18
You've set some high bars for your brothers.
7:20
- Well, they're at their place.
7:21
- And your cousins.
7:22
- They're going to be able to reach it.
7:23
I know. - Yeah.
7:24
- Mattie's going into high school.
7:26
I'm proud of him. He wants to play football, so.
7:28
And Davis is still a little boy
7:29
but I know he's good too.
7:31
- Yeah, he'll be good
7:33
because he's got a great mom and dad and great brothers.
7:36
So Jack, you really could be a good help, a big help
7:41
to maybe parents that have questions
7:44
that maybe just want a little advice.
7:46
- Yeah, of course.
7:47
I'd be definitely very happy
7:48
to give any advice I've learned.
7:49
- You would?
7:49
- Yeah, especially if it's about college admissions,
7:52
going to college, anything like that,
7:54
I'd be happy to answer any questions.
7:55
If y'all want to reach out to me,
7:57
you can find me on Instagram.
7:58
I run a little business and my time in school as well.
8:01
I sell sports cards so y'all can find me on Instagram.
8:04
It's Cardvard.
8:05
C-A-R-D-V-A-R-D.
8:07
So that's me.
8:08
If y'all want to reach out,
8:10
send me a message, I'd be happy to respond,
8:12
talk to y'all.
8:13
Any questions you might have, I'd be more than happy-
8:15
- Well that's very kind of you Jack,
8:17
but that's the kind of young man he is.
8:22
So you may have more questions
8:23
to answer than you know what to do with.
8:25
- Well, I'll be happy to help.
8:28
- Thank y'all for watching.
