- Y'all look at this big old hunk of love
0:03
I've got in my kitchen.
0:05
Lemme tell you something.
0:07
This man has an incredible wife.
0:11
Amazing.
0:12
Not that you're not-
0:14
- She is awesome.
0:15
- But he doesn't have a name, it's just plus one,
0:18
'cause anytime Deborah does something she said, oh,
0:22
and it'll be plus one.
0:23
- That's right when she gets invited to stuff.
0:25
- So that's him.
0:26
And look at these overalls.
0:27
And Deborah was showing me a picture of their son's wedding
0:31
and he said, now you know, I'm wearing my overalls.
0:34
Debbie said, no you're not, and he said, yes I am.
0:38
Well they're black with a red...
0:40
You looked fabulous Gary.
0:43
- That's right.
0:44
And I asked him-
0:45
- He does have a name, it's Gary.
0:46
- I asked the bride's permission if I go with the overalls
0:49
and she said, yes, and that overruled my wife.
0:51
(both laughing)
0:54
- I love it.
0:55
I've never seen anything like it, Gary.
0:57
But that picture was incredible.
0:59
Can you find that picture, Deb, or before it's over?
1:02
- [Deborah] I sure can.
1:03
- So this is his wife and Deborah and I first met
1:07
in person at the George Jones celebration of life...
1:16
- In Huntsville, Alabama.
1:17
- In Huntsville, Alabama.
1:20
- [Deborah] You were MCing
1:21
and did such an incredible job that night.
1:22
- Oh, well thank you.
1:23
I don't remember being an MC, but I'm glad I was.
1:27
(both laughing)
1:28
I've done a lot of fun things, Deborah-
1:30
- That was a fun night-
1:31
- That I can't remember.
1:32
And of course I just love his wife, you know,
1:36
she's just precious.
1:39
So anyway, over the years,
1:43
Deborah and I talked and found out
1:45
that her husband, plus one, Gary, enjoys cooking.
1:52
And he, I, so when Deborah
1:55
and I knew we were gonna get together, I said, well,
1:57
you think Gary would be willing to film a video with me
2:02
and make one of his favorite dishes?
2:05
- Yes, and-
2:05
- And he said, yes.
2:07
So, tell us what you're makin'.
2:09
- This is, my mom found this.
2:11
It was a school project for her when she was in junior high.
2:14
- This was your mama's? - My mama.
2:16
- Your mama did this-
2:17
- My mama gave this recipe to me
2:20
and it's actually saved my marriage.
2:23
- How so?
2:24
- Every time my wife get mad at me, I make the cake
2:28
and all's forgiven.
2:29
(both laughing)
2:33
- And the name of it, Gary, is Grandma...
2:36
- Pautz. - Pautz.
2:37
- Yeah, I thought it's my mom's name,
2:38
but my mama's maiden name is Pautz.
2:41
- Oh, I see, that's a P-A-U-T.
2:45
- T-Z.
2:46
- I thought it was an L. - No.
2:48
- I thought, Pautz. - Pautz.
2:51
- Chocolate mayonnaise cake.
2:53
- Oh yes.
2:54
There's no eggs or oil.
2:56
- You don't need it 'cause you got that-
2:57
- Got the mayonnaise.
2:59
- Yes, and what kind of mayonnaise we gonna use?
3:02
- Well I think you got Duke there, don't you?
3:05
- I do have a little Duke.
3:07
(both laughing)
3:08
That Duke's mayonnaise, it's just got a twang to it.
3:12
So, all we have to do on this, y'all,
3:16
it's a really super, super easy cake.
3:20
So, we just gonna put all of our dry ingredients together,
3:22
which is our all purpose flour.
3:26
- For this size pan here we use four cups of flour.
3:29
- Yes. - And-
3:30
- And you got your sugar.
3:31
- And then we got two cups of sugar
3:35
and 10 tablespoons of Hershey's cocoa.
3:40
- It is 10 tablespoons, yep.
3:43
- And everything- - Nice and chocolatey.
3:45
- And two teaspoons of baking soda and everything.
3:51
And we'll just mix all that together.
3:53
- All right, I'm gonna, it calls with two cups of hot water.
3:56
- Two, it has to be hot. - Okay.
3:57
- Because it actually makes the chocolate melt really well.
4:01
- Yes, and then we've got your vanilla extract.
4:04
We've got your mayonnaise and I'm gonna be getting you up
4:08
two cups of hot water.
4:11
- [Gary] That's right.
4:12
- [Paula] So, I'm gonna go to the machine
4:14
because it's like hot enough for your coffee.
4:18
Hot, hot, hot water.
4:20
- Okay. I'm just gonna-
4:21
- You gonna add your mayonnaise?
4:23
- [Gary] Dump the mayonnaise in there
4:25
and two teaspoons of vanilla.
4:30
- Okie doke.
4:31
And this is our homemade vanilla.
4:33
Gary, do you ever make your vanilla extract?
4:37
- I never have made my vanilla extract.
4:39
- Oh, it is so good.
4:40
It makes a wonderful gift at Christmas time.
4:44
You know, get it, put in a pretty bottle with a ribbon.
4:46
- How do you make that?
4:50
- How do you make it? - Yeah.
4:51
- You get your vanilla beans and you split 'em
4:55
and you scrape all the goody out
5:00
and put it in either bourbon or vodka,
5:03
depending on which.
5:04
- Okay, I've heard doing it with vodka.
5:07
- Don't you wanna use these? - Yeah, I do.
5:09
I don't wanna splatter it, that's why...(laughing)
5:12
- I was gonna say, do I need to stand back?
5:15
I'm gonna spray this pan.
5:17
- [Gary] Okay. - And it has flour in it
5:20
so you don't have to worry about your cake sticking.
5:23
So, tell us that story about what you would...
5:26
- Well, since we've been, the cruise
5:30
and everything like that, we started going to the Caribbean
5:32
and I noticed that you can buy a quart of vanilla
5:38
for a little of nothing.
5:39
Like, five bucks.
5:40
- [Paula] Yes. - You know, and so-
5:43
- [Paula] From Mexico, isn't it?
5:45
- Yeah, so any of the Caribbean places,
5:47
I mean, and they know they got cheap vanilla.
5:50
Like, I mean for what we pay for a little bottle
5:53
of vanilla here in the States.
5:55
- Oh, it's so expensive.
5:58
So, so expensive.
6:00
- We're gonna put that in the oven.
6:03
- 350? - 350 for 35 minutes.
6:07
- Okey doke.
6:07
Well, I'll put it in there for you.
6:10
So, you didn't write the stories did you?
6:18
- [Deborah] I did.
6:20
- You did. - [Deborah] I did.
6:20
- But it's from interviewing them.
6:22
- Yes.
6:23
I did interviews with all the artists
6:25
and they told me about their childhood Christmases
6:28
and shared recipes and pictures.
6:30
- That's wonderful.
6:31
So, you actually had to compose it all for it to make sense.
6:37
And Deborah's a wonderful writer.
6:40
- Wonderful?
6:42
That's kinda saying, I mean, she's won-
6:45
- Now tell me- - She's won the-
6:46
- Wait, wait, wait.
6:48
I want y'all to hear all her awards.
6:50
- Okay, she has won a CMA award for her journalistic,
6:54
you know, prowess.
6:55
She's won a Dove award for everything like that.
6:58
She produced CDs that they sold in Cracker Barrel
7:02
and two years ago they had a CD
7:05
that was the bluegrass thing.
7:08
It won the number one Bluegrass Album of the Year.
7:11
And Dolly actually had the number one
7:12
Bluegrass Song of the Year on that CD.
7:15
And she's, and of course Cracker Barrel, they kind of
7:19
slowed down on selling CDs, but she had CDs
7:22
in Cracker Barrel for 10 years.
7:23
- Wow, wow. - You know,
7:25
and everything like that.
7:26
And she put all it together
7:27
and it's all songs about Lord and love.
7:30
You know, you know all about faith and...
7:33
- And I liked the CD days
7:35
'cause I knew how to put it in my machine in my car.
7:38
- Oh yeah, you know, didn't have
7:39
to worry about losing signal or anything like that.
7:41
- Yeah, so you can see that he's, he is proud of his wife
7:46
and how accomplished she is.
7:51
And what word would you prefer me to use
7:53
more than wonderful?
7:57
- Wonderful pretty catches it, yeah.
7:59
Oh, she also won the Western award.
8:02
(both laughing)
8:04
- Made my sister more money.
8:05
- [Paula] I'm tellin' you what, honey.
8:07
- [Gary] What was the name of that Western award?
8:09
It's the Bob Wills thing?
8:11
- A humanitarian award.
8:11
- Humanitarian award from the westerns community and that-
8:14
- She's a fine Christian woman.
8:18
Where can you find this book?
8:21
- We're at Amazon and Barnes and Noble and everywhere, yeah.
8:25
- Well it's just a wonderful read if you like
8:30
personal stories and it makes it even more interesting
8:36
if you're a fan of their work, you know,
8:39
to get inside their personal head.
8:42
We gonna make the icing-
8:43
- We're gonna make the icing. - Kind of standard.
8:46
- Well, yeah, always heat the butter up
8:49
to put with the chocolate and melt it in there.
8:52
For some reason, when you-
8:53
- [Paula] There's you a thing, if you need it.
8:54
- When you do chocolate, it always,
8:57
to me it always tastes better when it heats up first.
9:00
- Yeah. - And then-
9:02
- Yeah.
9:03
Who wouldn't rather have a hot fudge sundae
9:07
than a cold fudge sundae?
9:09
And one more little drop just for extra you.
9:13
- I'm good.
9:14
I like extra vanilla like you do butter.
9:17
- I love almond- - Oh yeah?
9:19
- Yeah, I used all my icing on the brownies
9:21
that I have over here, I used a little almond flavoring
9:25
and I just, I like it.
9:28
- Now we put the milk in. - Okay.
9:31
- Third a cup of milk.
9:33
- All right, and you want that before you put any of the-
9:35
- Yeah, put it all in there.
9:38
- Okay. - 'Cause I'll make-
9:41
- I'll do it.
9:43
I'll put this outta your way.
9:46
- A lot of times I'll adjust, it's,
9:49
it says three cups of sugar.
9:52
- [Paula] Yeah, well, a-
9:54
- But I never measure it. (laughing)
9:59
- I know it.
10:00
Well a box of powdered sugar should yield
10:06
about three and a half cups.
10:08
So you can, and you know, you always just add a little milk
10:13
or warm water to it, whatever, if it's not the-
10:17
- Or more sugar. - Here.
10:19
Yeah, I'll help you have another hand.
10:23
- You have an extra hand? - Yes.
10:26
I said in that restaurant, when I was in
10:28
that restaurant, I said, in my next life, I'm coming back
10:32
as a octopus because I'd have eight arms
10:37
and I could work four stations with eight arms.
10:43
- Oh wow.
10:46
- All right, so when you put this on a hot cake,
10:48
it's gonna immediately melt.
10:50
- Right- - And it'll get a lot thinner.
10:52
- And then it'll seep down into it some.
10:57
- [Paula] Yes, yes.
10:58
Do you poke holes?
11:00
- [Gary] No, I just- - [Paula] In your cake?
11:01
- I just pour it in there.
11:05
I'm just adding a little more confectionist sugar
11:09
'cause I like it a little thick.
11:11
- [Paula] Okay.
11:12
- Like I say, I never measure.
11:14
Oh, that looks good.
11:15
- Uh-huh, now I took a toothpick and stuck it in there
11:18
and it came out dry.
11:20
- Okay. - So...
11:22
- Yeah, good oven.
11:23
And that looks good on top.
11:24
- Yeah, look, that chocolate's
11:26
gonna go down in those cracks.
11:28
- Oh yeah.
11:29
We gonna dump it on this cake hot.
11:31
- Yes, yes, yes. - And I'ma let this,
11:36
when I say dump it-
11:36
- [Paula] You mean dump it.
11:38
- [Gary] I mean dump it.
11:41
- [Paula] Now, you don't ever add nuts to your cake?
11:44
Oh, that's right, 'cause you got a tree allergy.
11:46
- [Gary] Yeah, I can't, I don't do good with tree nuts.
11:51
So, it's the advantage of me being the cook,
11:54
I cook the way I like things.
11:56
- [Paula] That's right. (laughing)
11:59
That's exactly right.
12:02
- Okay.
12:03
- I'm just kind of helping you.
12:04
I'm gonna take this 'cause I'm gonna get you
12:06
some more goody outta there.
12:09
I'm from the school of...
12:11
- [Gary] And I just slather this all over that
12:15
and let it melt right in there.
12:18
- Yes, yes.
12:22
Well I need for you to tell me how big.
12:25
- It, the pi, it's really rich.
12:30
So, I mean...
12:30
- So how 'bout four pieces?
12:32
- Four pieces there and now-
12:35
- How 'bout that?
12:36
- That'll work there.
12:38
- Oh, and look, who gets to cut the cake gets a lick.
12:45
(Gary laughing)
12:46
Other side.
12:48
- Yeah. - Oh yeah.
12:52
- Oh yeah. - Warm icing.
12:55
- There is nothing like warm icing.
13:01
Oh, the cake is so hot.
13:03
- Yes.
13:04
- All right, you can start serving that.
13:07
Eddie, would you have some with us?
13:10
- [Eddie] I'll wait.
13:12
- Eddie has got more willpower.
13:14
- [Deborah] Boy, he does.
13:15
- He does.
13:19
Oh, okay, we all have a fork. - Yep.
13:21
- Mm, bon appetit.
13:29
- [Deborah] Oh, that's good.
13:31
Oh my goodness.
13:34
- [Paula] Is it as good as he usually makes?
13:37
- [Gary] The Duke, it's good.
13:39
- [Deborah] It is.
13:40
I was curious with it being Duke's,
13:42
not Hellman's, but that is fabulous.
13:46
(Paula and Deb making satisfied sounds)
13:56
- I cut the cake. - I like it.
13:58
- Huh? - When you give somebody food
14:00
and they can't talk, that's a good sign. (laughing)
14:03
- That's a good sign.
14:06
That is a good sign.
14:09
- It is rich.
14:10
I highly recommend milk when you're eating this dish.
14:13
It tastes really good.
14:16
I have a point, like the next day,
14:20
I will actually take a piece
14:22
and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds
14:24
just to get it warm again. (laughing)
14:29
- This is so good.
14:29
- Paula, this has been a honor.
14:32
- Oh my.
14:33
- For me to cook with you.
14:34
My gosh, I followed you for years.
14:36
You are awesome.
14:38
I love you.
14:39
- I love you too, Gary.
14:40
- Watched you and praised you for years.
14:45
You're also a woman of God, woman of faith,
14:50
woman of character.
14:52
I can't believe I had an opportunity
14:54
to spend this time with you.
14:56
It is so great.
14:57
I really do appreciate it.
14:58
- It is so my honor.
14:59
So my honor.
15:02
I'm so happy and proud to call you and Deborah friends.
15:06
- I appreciate it.
15:07
Thank you very much.
15:08
- Thank you, honey.
15:10
But look at that icing that just fell down there.
15:12
I'm trying to-
15:14
(Gary laughing)
15:18
Thank you. - Oh, thank you.
15:21
- And if Deborah ever wants to get rid of you,
15:23
you come fill Paula.
15:24
(Gary and Deborah laughing)
15:27
Okay?
15:28
Pinky promise. - Pinky promise.
15:31
- Pinky promise.
15:36
