- Y'all, I talked Theresa into hanging out with me
0:04
while I make this grape salad.
0:06
- Just FYI, I hang out with you every day.
0:09
- Oh yeah, she does hang out with me every day,
0:11
but sometimes she ain't got on no lipstick.
0:13
- None (Paula laughing) or hair.
0:16
- Today she's got her lipstick and makeup, got earrings on.
0:18
- Got contacts.
0:19
- Contacts, she is all flossied out.
0:24
So, I'm gonna ask you to help.
0:27
We're gonna need the hand mixer.
0:29
- [Theresa] Okay, it's right down here.
0:30
- Oh.
0:32
- [Theresa] Oh-oh.
0:32
- So the salad that I was telling you, or the dish,
0:36
it's hard for me to consider it a salad,
0:38
but the dish I'm referring to
0:40
for Thanksgiving and Christmas is my grape salad.
0:46
And to me, people eat it up so fast
0:51
where if I spend hours making ambrosia they won't eat it.
0:56
- This is so good.
0:57
- It is so good.
1:00
So, Theresa, if you would, uh.
1:02
- Cream the cheese.
1:04
- Yeah, I'm going to use about, let me tell y'all this now.
1:10
You know, I have told y'all a hundred times
1:12
how I change my recipes.
1:14
I change my own recipes.
1:18
- [Theresa] Not you.
1:19
- Yes, I do, I do.
1:21
All right, so I'm using about three-quarters of a package of
1:27
cream cheese,
1:29
and about three-quarters of a cup of sour cream.
1:33
- Perfect.
1:34
- All right, oh.
1:35
- And we're gonna give you a recipe.
1:36
- We're gonna dance.
1:37
- And then, Paula, and then you can choose
1:39
to use her version that she's doing right now,
1:42
or you can follow a recipe like I do.
1:43
- My version.
1:46
My version or my version.
1:48
All right, version one, version two.
1:51
If you would just hold up for just one second, please,
1:53
so I can, I wanna show them this.
1:57
Now I'm using lids
2:00
that go on these plastic containers.
2:04
I'm putting the bowl side up,
2:08
and then I'm putting the bowl side up, also,
2:13
on top of these grapes.
2:14
And this is a fast way if you're doing, trying to do,
2:20
say grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes.
2:24
This is a great way to do 'em quick.
2:27
Look at that.
2:29
Just one swoop, I've got all my grapes halved.
2:33
Isn't that great?
2:34
My son, Bobby, actually taught me that.
2:40
So I like to slice, like, half, and then leave half whole.
2:47
So this will take care of our sliced.
2:51
And this recipe calls for four pounds of grapes.
2:55
We don't have close to four pounds of grapes,
2:58
but when I make my grape salad, this is a time, Theresa,
3:01
that I like to take the opportunity
3:03
to go through my refrigerator.
3:05
- Mm-hmm, I know you do.
3:06
- And see what fruits I have.
3:07
Pineapple, I love pineapple in this, blueberries.
3:12
- Oh, one thing I didn't put out.
3:13
- What?
3:14
- That you said, raisins.
3:14
- Oh yeah, I'll get the raisins.
3:16
The raisins just, mm, add that other little bite of sweet.
3:22
So we have got,
3:23
we haven't put our sugar in there yet, have we?
3:25
- Nope.
3:26
- Just our sour cream and cream cheese, so.
3:31
This is a half a cup measure, so,
3:34
on this I kinda taste and go, you know, so.
3:39
You'll want to try to,
3:43
I always wash my grapes,
3:45
but when I'm using 'em for grape salad,
3:47
I always try to lay 'em on a dishcloth,
3:52
and kinda get some of the water out of 'em.
3:56
So there we go.
3:57
This is gonna make a pile.
3:59
Now what I found in my refrigerator today.
4:02
- [Theresa] I'm just gonna move over here.
4:03
- I found some maraschino cherries.
4:05
I love my cherries in it.
4:07
I found some fresh blueberries.
4:09
So I think those will be wonderful in my grape salad.
4:15
And you can kinda just use the proportions
4:18
that you want to use.
4:20
I'm gonna test this for sweetness.
4:27
Sure look good.
4:30
You know what?
4:32
- And there she goes.
4:33
- Here I go, honey.
4:38
I like this really, really wet.
4:43
It's not like making coleslaw
4:45
where you don't want your coleslaw just dripping wet,
4:50
but I do love all my moisture.
4:53
So I'm gonna go ahead and use the whole eight ounce package,
4:56
and the whole eight ounce cup of sour cream.
4:59
- Also, that's what the recipe says.
5:02
- Oh, it is?
5:03
Now I love maraschino cherries in my grape salad
5:07
'cause it's just pretty, you know, the color is pretty,
5:10
but I do rinse 'em very, very well and then I drain 'em
5:14
because if you don't, it's going to turn your grape salad,
5:18
it'll turn all this pink,
5:19
and I don't want pink stuff in my grape salad.
5:25
So we wound up using an eight ounce package of cream cheese.
5:29
Eight ounce container of sour cream,
5:32
and about a half a cup of sugar.
5:34
So that's my pretty much standard recipe, Theresa.
5:38
- Mm-hmm, it is.
5:39
- But it's the things that goes in it
5:41
that I can change all of that.
5:43
- I know it is.
5:45
- So we've got our grapes here, our sliced and our whole.
5:49
I've got some blueberries.
5:52
- I may serve this for Christmas,
5:54
now that you've reminded me of this recipe.
5:56
- Everybody loves this.
5:59
And I love making ambrosia.
6:01
It takes me many hours, you know,
6:05
to peel and section those oranges.
6:07
- [Theresa] And nobody appreciates that.
6:08
- Nobody, nobody.
6:11
All right, so while Theresa is stemming those,
6:13
I just wanna make sure that you understood what I was doing
6:18
for slicing the grapes.
6:20
- [Theresa] Now where do you want your cherries?
6:21
- And that's putting.
6:24
- [Theresa] Do you want them in there?
6:25
- Yeah, you can throw 'em right in here.
6:27
So you'll want
6:30
the bowl side up,
6:34
and then you'll want the bowl side up on this as well.
6:40
And that holds 'em in place and you just slice 'em
6:42
and it takes minutes off of whatever you're doing.
6:48
All right, so,
6:51
we've got our fruit here and we always add cheese to it.
6:57
The cheese is delicious.
6:58
Hey cousin Don.
7:01
- [Don] Hello.
7:01
- [Paula] I'm making you some grape salad.
7:07
All right, now I'm gonna put in my cheese.
7:13
And that's about an eight ounce package.
7:20
- [Theresa] You really do have to get into this
7:21
with your hands.
7:22
- [Paula] Yeah, yeah.
7:23
- And you grated that cheese yourself.
7:25
- Yeah, oh yes, I hand grated it.
7:27
I don't like that powdered stuff.
7:30
All right, so I'm gonna get a larger bowl, Theresa.
7:33
- Okay.
7:35
- Okay.
7:36
We might put, like, a little bit more cheese.
7:41
All right.
7:44
Now we're gonna add some walnuts.
7:49
And you know what,
7:50
I think we could stand some more blueberries.
7:54
Now if you like for looks you can use a red grape,
7:58
or a purple grape, or a green grape
8:01
because it's really pretty if you mix your colors of grapes.
8:05
- Yeah.
8:06
- But green grapes are so tart.
8:09
- I like the red grapes too.
8:10
- I do too, I do too.
8:11
And if it's a cotton candy grape, I like it even better.
8:15
- Yeah, they didn't have those.
8:16
- All right, so if you wanna fold this into that, Theresa.
8:20
- [Theresa] Certainly.
8:21
- And I'm not gonna wash my hands right this second
8:24
'cause I may have to get in it again with my hands.
8:29
- [Theresa] She's testing my abilities with her small bowl
8:31
that she and I argue about all the time.
8:35
- All the time.
8:42
Okay, that's painful for me to watch.
8:46
- [Theresa] I guess it is.
8:46
- So I'm gonna do this while you stir the rest in, okay?
8:51
- [Theresa] You got it.
8:55
- And I've washed my hand 'til the skin's about off today,
8:58
so, don't worry for a second I have not.
9:07
Oh, look how good this is.
9:11
It is so good.
9:12
Now we need a pretty bowl
9:17
that we can.
9:19
- Make it look pretty in.
9:20
- Uh-huh, and you see how nice,
9:26
there's no chintzy of the wonderful cream, you know,
9:31
that really makes it so good, so, yes, yes, yes.
9:38
- Now one thing I do wanna remind them is in the recipe,
9:42
although all these measurements
9:44
have pretty much been the same,
9:45
this is not half as many grapes.
9:49
So if you want to be as wet as Paula's making it,
9:52
you're almost gonna have to do at least
9:55
one and a half times the recipe on the ingredients.
9:58
- And I wish I had some pineapple
9:59
because I do love pineapple chunks,
10:02
or pineapple tidbits in this, but I don't.
10:06
So we just need a pretty bowl to put this in.
10:10
And this is best if you can make it the day before,
10:14
it just gets better.
10:15
So you wanna find a bowl, you wanna a kiss?
10:18
- I will.
10:20
- Okay, Eddie found me a pretty clean bowl.
10:23
And I'm gonna try to put this in our bowl
10:25
without making a mess, you know, on our edges
10:29
because I don't like that it'd look like
10:34
we've been sloppy with our.
10:40
- [Theresa] Look how pretty.
10:41
- Oh, it's so pretty.
10:44
- I'm taking some of this home too.
10:45
- Yes.
10:46
You know, you eat things with your eyes first.
10:49
I've said that for years.
10:52
- But you're not even done yet.
10:54
- Uh-uh, not done yet.
10:58
Oh, you know what, we forgot that I had so many of.
11:01
- The raisins.
11:02
- No, I put the raisins, my apples.
11:04
- Oh.
11:07
- I love dicing up apples and putting in it.
11:11
So we really run a whole gamut.
11:15
- Every fruit.
11:16
- Of fruits in this grape salad, yes.
11:22
Okay.
11:24
We have done that without slopping up any of our edges.
11:31
I'm losing some of my cheese
11:33
and I don't want to lose my cheese.
11:39
Okay.
11:42
I'm gonna have to wash my hands again for a second.
11:45
My last step is to sprinkle this with brown sugar.
11:51
- [Theresa] Yum.
11:54
- Mm, and when we serve it later,
11:59
I'm so afraid, you know, I put a piece of bread.
12:02
I don't know where that came from.
12:04
It's something Eddie must have done.
12:05
- [Theresa] In your store, from your Paula Deen store.
12:07
It keeps it from clumping.
12:08
- Yeah, I put a piece of bread
12:10
and I'm so afraid I'm gonna pull out a piece of bread.
12:14
And sprinkle on top, so.
12:17
I just wanna kinda evenly sprinkle that around.
12:25
Darn, so always make sure you add some apples.
12:29
And now we're gonna sprinkle the top with a few more nuts.
12:34
We're gonna cover it and put it in the refrigerator,
12:37
but right now we're going to taste it.
12:38
- I was gonna say we better be trying it.
12:41
- Mm.
12:43
All right, fork, let's use a fork.
12:47
That way we can,
12:49
'cause I'm anal about keeping my bowl clean.
12:54
- [Theresa] Oh.
12:55
- Oh, honey, I don't need no plate.
12:59
- I know.
13:00
- Okay, here we go, bon appétit.
13:03
Mm.
13:05
- I love this salad.
13:07
I don't even have to taste it and know that I love it.
13:08
- I know.
13:10
And it's even better
13:12
because when it sits in our refrigerator,
13:15
that brown sugar melts.
13:17
- And it just caramelizes almost.
13:19
- That's when I serve this.
13:20
You wouldn't even be able to see the brown sugar.
13:26
Thanksgiving or Christmas.
13:28
You won't be disappointed.
13:31
- So Merry Christmas everybody.
13:32
- And make it your own.
13:33
Yes, Merry Christmas.
13:33
Make it your own.
13:34
Put whatever in the hell you feel like, right?
13:39
- Yes.
13:39
(Paul giggling)
