0:00
- Hey, y'all I got a note from a fan.
0:06
Her name is Leslie Klein and she was actually
0:10
a Monday bundle winner.
0:13
- Didn't y'all tell me that?
0:16
- So she sent me a couple of recipes to try.
0:19
I have to say the mounds.
0:22
That is Jamie Dean's favorite candy.
0:24
Leslie, and I have been making it now,
0:27
for at least 40 years.
0:29
And I appreciate you sending it to me
0:31
because it is a delicious recipe,
0:34
but she sent me a recipe that you don't
0:40
hear talked about every day and I've got one,
0:45
I've got a recipe in one of my books.
0:47
I think it may be in "Kitchen Classics,"
0:50
but mine is different
0:52
from the one that Leslie sent and look at this,
0:59
the fairly odd parents
1:09
somebody brought this at a dinner, a work dinner,
1:13
and she says she's been making it ever since 1990. So,
1:20
So when this browns I'm gonna drain it, Leslie,
1:24
this is a very, very easy recipe.
1:27
And as far as I'm concerned,
1:29
I know it's delicious
1:32
because I have eaten a cabbage casserole before.
1:36
So these were just boiled off, cut in quarters
1:42
and boiled until it was tender.
1:49
So which one did you have, Michael?
1:55
- I'm just gonna chop this up,
2:03
Oh this cabbage looks divine.
2:08
And it calls for one head of cabbage, right, Leslie?
2:16
- Leslie, you got such a deep voice. (laughs)
2:22
I'm not going to use the real dark leaves because
2:27
they take a little longer to cook.
2:29
Although I think they're so pretty.
2:30
I love the color that they lend,
2:34
but it takes a little longer for those so
2:37
I'm just going to put those to the side. So there we go.
2:55
the recipe consists of one head of cabbage
2:57
cut and cooked and drained.
3:00
A pound of lean ground beef,
3:03
a 32 ounce can of crushed tomatoes.
3:09
We don't, we couldn't find a 30,
3:11
a 32 ounce can, maybe it's a two.
3:19
Anyway, two cups of chopped sharp cheddar cheese.
3:22
One to go in the casserole and one to go on top,
3:26
one medium onion, chopped,
3:30
and a teaspoon of sugar
3:35
and then put it in a 13 by 9 by 2 casserole dish,
3:39
bake at 350 until cheese is melted.
3:46
A kind of a one-pot meal that busy mamas appreciate.
3:55
So, I'm going to drain this
4:00
and then we'll be ready to mix mix mix.
4:03
All right, I'm going to add one chopped onion.
4:08
I'm going to add one cup of cheese,
4:14
and I'm gonna save a cup for the top,
4:17
when we put that together,
4:22
let's go ahead and add the cabbage.
4:28
and you know, it's really good for you.
4:35
And I drained my beef
4:42
and it had, it had a little bit of,
4:45
a little bit of fat come off of it, but not much.
4:51
All right. So we're just going to mix this up real good.
4:55
And I've got my 13 by 9 by 2 pan.
4:59
- [Theresa] Don't forget your-- Are the tomatoes going in?
5:00
- Oh my-- No, I'm gonna put them in last.
5:11
My can of crushed tomatoes,
5:14
which that's what I use all the time.
5:21
That was a little big.
5:26
So she said, Leslie said a 32 ounce,
5:29
but this is a 28 ounce.
5:32
So I don't know if she means by a 28 ounce can.
5:36
And then by an eight ounce can,
5:39
- [Theresa] It probably was a 32 ounce can
5:41
and it's now a 28 ounce.
5:42
Just like everything else.
5:44
- Yeah, in 1990. Yeah.
5:45
- [Michael] Or do 16 ounce. And I didn't check the store.
5:48
And this is what you had in your pantry.
5:50
So we just went with the 28 ounce.
5:52
- This is, this is what I use.
5:53
I use crushed tomatoes
5:56
and it's brand she uses too, isn't it? Yeah.
6:07
I think this will be fine.
6:10
Using the 28 ounce can.
6:14
And remember everything's hot and everything's cooked, so.
6:23
- [Michael] This is like a deconstructed cabbage rolls,
6:30
Your momma used to make a lot of cabbage rolls. Didn't she?
6:35
Okay. Oh, this is heavy now.
6:38
Michael, you want to stand up and help me please?
6:46
All right. I didn't put my salt and pepper in it.
6:49
She set up one and a half teaspoons of salt
6:55
or whatever you like, teaspoon of pepper.
7:03
- [Speaker 2] Where do you want it?
7:05
- [Paula] I'm going to put it in that bowl
7:06
right there where you're standing behind.
7:08
- [Speaker 2] You ready?
7:25
All right. If you pull it back just a little bit,
7:34
I'm gonna try to do this left-handed. (chuckles)
7:41
It's funny how God gave us two hands,
7:45
but one of them is almost no good,
7:49
(laughs) isn't that funny?
7:51
but yet we couldn't do without it.
7:59
- [Theresa] We got it.
8:00
- Y'all picking up what I'm putting down here.
8:04
Now we're going to top it with the cheese
8:05
and in the oven, it goes, at 350,
8:11
until the cheese is melted,
8:13
we got a little bit more cheese?
8:18
You know I buy those big old blocks
8:21
and shred them in the food processor.
8:26
And you think, gosh, that's so much cheese,
8:29
but when you get it grated, it's really not all that much.
8:33
- [Theresa] We used that whole thing in 2 days.
8:37
we've been doing a lot of cooking.
8:38
Okay. In the oven, it goes
8:42
350 till the cheese is melted.
8:47
Leslie said, Ooh, that's a hot oven
8:53
and surprisingly heavy, y'all.
8:57
She said just cook it.
8:58
Theresa, would you shut that oven for me please?
9:00
- [Theresa] Certainly!
9:02
- She said just until the cheese melts.
9:07
So the cheese has melted.
9:15
think I'll use my little pooper scooper.
9:19
This looks very good.
9:26
I might need a spoon.
9:36
Looks very good, Leslie.
9:42
I don't think the recipe that I used to make,
9:44
I don't think it had ground beef in it,
9:47
which having ground beef in this really makes it a winner.
9:54
- [Theresa] It's hot?
9:55
- It's a little warm, but it's good.
10:04
Having the ground beef in it really
10:06
makes it a great winner for families
10:10
because it's got everything that you need in it.
10:13
You could serve this along with a little pot of rice.
10:19
It'd be so good on top of rice.
10:29
Leslie, I so appreciate you sending me this.
10:35
Can't try to fill my mouth up, then try to start talking.
10:43
I appreciate it so much.
10:45
I always love hearing from y'all
10:46
and I love to know what y'all are doing.
10:50
And some days I know what I'm doing,
10:57
unless y'all tell me what y'all doing. I don't know.
11:02
So thank you, Leslie.
11:05
And I'll see you next time.
11:08
Love and best dishes!
