Hey Gus, you hungry buddy
0:23
Hey friends, I'm so glad y'all are here with me today because I got a real treat for y'all
0:30
You know, I was racking my brain. I have done shows for I don't know how many years
0:35
talking about my hometown of Albany, Georgia. But you know what? I was trying to figure out
0:41
I don't know that I've ever taken y'all there. I had forgotten how beautiful
0:51
that middle Georgia and southwest Georgia, The ride, the cotton fields just went on for acres and acres and acres
1:00
And it looked like the fields were just covered in snow. And I made the comment to Michael
1:07
I said, doesn't it look like snow, Michael? He said, Paula, to me, it reminds me of the water
1:13
It just shimmers. And this goes on for miles and miles and miles
1:18
And then we come up on incredible sunflower fields that just go on for acres
1:28
Like I said, I had forgotten how beautiful it was. Hey, welcome to Albany
1:41
Boys, y'all come on in. I'm having a southern picnic supper tonight for my mother's belated birthday
1:47
and you have never been to anything like this before and I promise you, you won't ever go to anything like this again
1:53
But come on, I want y'all to meet everybody and see what we're doing. These are all of my mother's friends
2:00
Lifelong friends, neighborhood friends, and longtime friends. And we've got my mother over here, the birthday girl
2:09
I've got 12 in the dining room, car table outside, inside, and a round table up here
2:15
So find your name and sit down and then we will serve you
2:21
Okay? Virginia, you're in here. Gigi, you're outside, I believe, at one of those tables
2:28
Nita, you're outside. Glad's in here. Mariella is right down there. Go with Marie
2:33
I think you're inside at the table. I tell you what, y'all are like, I got a herd y'all in here
2:40
I'm going to wrangle y'all up. No, Alice, you're at the round table
2:44
Okay, come on. We're going to find your place. I think you're over here. I'm working up a sweat, and I'm ready to eat
2:51
I tell you what, trying to get these little ladies where they're supposed to go in this confined area is difficult
2:58
They can get here, believe me, give them an invitation, and party on
3:03
Okay, come on. Phil, come on. We've got some special guests, and my guests don't know this guest is coming
3:11
What a thrill, what a thrill, what a thrill. Come on. Oh, she's here
3:16
She's here. It's like Santa. They're going to just absolutely go ape when they hear her
3:22
Are they going to be able to see me? Yes. Yes, they're going to be able to see me
3:25
And Michael's here too. Will they hear me? Oh, oh, oh, oh. Where's your mama? Your mama's in that end
3:30
Yes, yes. Happy birthday! How are you? Hey, ladies
3:40
I'm Paola. Hey, Paola. And this is Michael. We've come for your birthday
3:47
Well, Susan has kept all this top secret. Like I said, Ring Ring, she was keeping this under lock and key
3:56
I heard about y'all's last luncheon. How wonderful it was. Oh, it was
4:03
And this is the thing of the past, isn't it? Yeah. Y'all don't do things like this anymore, do you
4:09
We're having a southern picnic with linen, napkins, silver, china, and crystal
4:14
Real linen, real silver. Real silver, real crystal. Oh, that hair is so pretty
4:20
Oh, my gosh. I'm so glad to see y'all. Come on. Let's go see what these ladies are doing
4:27
It's almost time for the wonderful dessert. Come on. Come on. Come on
4:35
Come on. Come on. All right. You ready? Happy birthday to you
4:39
Come on, sing. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Ring Ring
4:47
Happy birthday to you. To me. How beautiful. Come on, you can do it
4:58
You can do it. I'll help you. Oh. Oh. All right, tell us what's in the cake, Susan
5:08
That is my grandmother's recipe. So it something I told me when I make it since she passed away But you find a surprise when you cut into it because there is I have added my own twist and it has lots of colors going on so
5:24
Oh, wow! Oh, my goodness! Beautiful! Well, it's just beautiful
5:34
And it's delicious. Isn't it good? Come on, ladies, we're going to corral up and have our picture made
5:41
Have you tried to move 26 that can hardly move, walk, eat, or chew
5:49
I'm so glad you did this. Glad for being a part of it. It was wonderful
5:54
I appreciate it. I so hope y'all are enjoying the show
6:10
And if you do, be sure to click like, subscribe, and the notification bell so you'll never miss a video
6:18
And we'll be right back after the break. So today, I'm taking y'all on a trip back to my hometown of Albany, Georgia
6:33
I had the opportunity to attend my best friend's mother's birthday. And at the end of the meal, Susan had a special dessert planned for her mother
6:46
So in comes this young woman named Susan Malden with this most gorgeous, gorgeous cake
6:55
Just gorgeous. And when you cut it, it just took your breath away
7:00
So I thought, you know, I'm going to have to share this with my friends out there
7:05
So I got in here last night, and I played around in my kitchen to find a way to make that cake
7:12
but just dumb it down a little bit where it's a little bit easier
7:16
So this is how I did it. I made my grandmother hires as one, two, three, four cake
7:22
But if you want to make it even simpler, use a white cake mix
7:28
I've got four different food colorings. So I'm going to divide my batter into four separate bowls
7:40
and I'm going to color each one of them a different color. It's important that I divide my batter equally
7:49
I'm going to try to do this. And it's good if I use the same size bowls
7:58
so I can't be tricked by thinking that I've got less in one or more in one
8:11
So let's see how Paula did. All right, so I'm going to start slow because I don't know how strong this one is
8:21
Ooh, I thought that was red, but it's orange. Oh, I love the color purple
8:28
I think there was a movie about that, wasn't it? Whoa, do y'all think I put too much green
8:40
So I got my prepared pan with my wax paper in it. I've sprayed it with a nonstick spray
8:47
I'm going to take one spoon and put that right down in there like that
8:56
So there we go. All right, now I'm going to come in here with a nice big spoonful of purple
9:05
Then I'm going to come in here with a nice little spoonful of orange
9:10
The weight of it makes it spread out in the pan. And you can do these in any order that you want to, y'all
9:20
I just like the idea of the big contrast. There's the red
9:33
When that cake comes out to the edge of your pan, you're going to know then that you about have enough
9:43
I can't hardly wait to have my grandchildren over to make this cake with me
9:52
So that's it, y'all. We have finally got all of our cakes done
10:02
And they look so pretty. I hope y'all are enjoying the show
10:18
And I want to hear from you. Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me make
10:23
by just leaving a short comment below. Now let get back to the show y
10:40
I've got a few things I'd like you to look at. And while these are baking and I'm cleaning up, I'm going to take a quick break
10:50
But I want y'all to see some little home movies that I took on a trip home to Albany
10:56
I think you'll see exactly why I love going home so much
11:05
You know, I'm going to do something today that I've only done one other time in my whole life
11:11
and that's get a facial. I love a head massage. I love it, too
11:22
Mmm. I didn't know you got that with a facial. How do you like my facial
11:31
I'll tell you what. It's only my second facial in the world. I don't have any makeup on now
11:35
None? Mm-mm. I put a little blush on them. You look great
11:39
You don't need makeup. It feels like a baby's butt. When are you going on tea? Tomorrow
11:44
No, next week. First thing next week. I can't wait to get that
11:48
Well, let me tell you what. Jennifer gave me a complete shave with a scaffold
11:52
Uh-huh. A scalpel. And did she show you what came off your face
11:56
One time she did. Woo! When she does that scraping, it is amazing at what comes off your face
12:06
Well, I want a scalpel. And if you notice gunk on me, she gave me an oatmeal mask
12:14
Oh, did she? Yeah, so I got oatmeal all in my eyebrows. If I could lick them, I would
12:19
All right, now, is that something you can do at home for yourself
12:23
No. In oatmeal, you cannot do it for yourself at home? I wouldn't want to
12:27
I don't think you can do it correctly. Okay. Well, I eat a lot of oatmeal, so maybe that'll help
12:34
Well, save you a couple of tablespoons, Aunt Peggy, at the end of the meal and just rub it all over your face
12:43
I did make that lip scrub that Jules gave me. You know, recipe for it, and it is wonderful
12:56
We're going to Salt Lick. Oh, yay. All right, now, they don't have, like, a buffet
13:01
because you understand this is a place where working people run in and pick up and grab. Good
13:07
Sausage dogs are to die for. This is Salt Lick. And my favorite person in here, his name is Bubba
13:14
Bubba. Bubba, and I promise you. Look, those folks are having a picnic
13:19
Yeah, but I promise you, you'll be able to pick out Bubba. Hey, Bubba, I'm Paula Deen
13:24
It's good to meet you. Good to meet you. You want a big one or a little one? Just that one
13:29
Just the average size. I don't think you can do that, Bubba. Yum
13:35
Thank you, Bubba. You're welcome. This is where you stop when you go into the ballgame
13:38
You got cutie ice. Ain't it good? That's the best ice. I'm just kidding
13:42
What? It would be a perfect stop before we go drinking. Perfect
13:49
Energy. A little bit of energy. There's nothing better than a good old sausage dog
13:54
Mm-mm. Ooh. Wonderful. Paul, come on, sissy. We stopped here to get a sausage dog and you've eaten two
14:03
That's mine. Ready to go. Come on, boys and girls. All right, we got to go. We got to go
14:09
So, went on down the road to Sasser. which is a little town in between Albany and Dawson
14:17
And they've turned the whole little town, all the little stores, into antique shops
14:25
And my favorite place to go there is Alice and Jay's. They take all these metal, old metal pieces, and they make Christmas trees out of them and wreaths
14:37
And they've just got some of the neatest things. And so I can't go to Albany without running down the street to Sasser
14:46
And, you know, I always bring home things I really don't need, but I just love
14:51
But I tell you what I love more than that, and that's spending time with y'all
14:58
We love you spending time with us. I adore my time with y'all
15:02
When you're not under the thumb, which is nice. I know it, and I can just come home and be with Paula Hires
15:08
Ooh, ooh, I like that. Be with my family. Uh-huh. This is so special
15:14
And to go junking! Hey, handsome! Hey, young man. How long has it been since I've seen you
15:24
789, what's wrong? It wasn't that long, was it? What? That we were here
15:30
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show. And if you do, be sure to click like, subscribe, and the notification bell
15:39
so you'll never miss a video. And we'll be right back after the break
15:52
Okay y This is too much fun, y'all. I love doing this cake
16:01
All right, now you see I put a little icing down there. That is to just keep it from sliding off my wax paper
16:10
I'm doing this on a cake wheel to make it easy to frost, y'all
16:15
So I will be picking this up and transferring it to my cake plate
16:20
There's my cake plate down there. All right, so I can get rid of some of this and bring this a little closer
16:28
Now, this, I didn't show y'all how to make a buttercream icing because it's so simple
16:34
You know, four cups of powdered sugar, two sticks of butter, and you're flavoring a couple of drops of milk
16:40
Oh, my other cakes are ready. That is ready. You can see that the more expensive food coloring, the kind from a craft shop, see how much more vibrant they are
17:00
So when this cake cools and I put it together, it's going to be more beautiful than this one
17:09
All right, so here we go with our second layer. It's just quick, quick, quick
17:22
Okie dokie. Artichokey. I'm going to grab a couple of toothpicks and stick in here just so I know it won't slide on me
17:35
Do y'all remember? Do y'all remember the day I was, God love Oprah Winfrey
17:43
She had me on her show. And I was making my Grandma Paul's sour cream pound cake
17:49
and I was so excited to be there making this cake for Oprah
17:55
I had those little glass ramekin bowls full of all my ingredients
18:01
and that mixer was going at full speed ahead. And I dropped that glass ramekin into that flying mixer
18:12
and my little Bobby was sitting in the first row, he and Jamie
18:19
with their brand new suits because they were so proud that we had gotten on Oprah's show
18:28
And icing was just hitting Bobby from every direction. That glass bowl just flying around in that mixer
18:37
And I was mortified. I said, I knew that glass bowl was going to break, fly up there, put Oprah's eyes out, and the world was going to hate my guts
18:49
And you know what? As distressed as I was, that turned out to be one of Oprah's most 25 favorite shows
19:00
You know, we're realizing more and more every day in this world just how important family really is
19:09
and friends. Friends that you love good enough that you consider them family
19:17
And they say you can never go home, but, you know, I really disagree with that
19:25
If you'll take the time, you can go home. Okie doke
19:35
So look at that fun cake, y'all. and you see it was really no big deal to make it
19:43
But if I think this one's pretty, this one is going to be incredible
19:48
You must try this cake at home with your children or your grandchildren
19:54
I think y'all will just have more fun. And don't forget, if you want to make it even easier
20:03
invest in that little box cake mix. There's nothing to be ashamed of for that
20:08
So if y'all had a good time today, I know I've had a great time being with y'all
20:17
You know, I can almost feel, I can almost feel your face and your smile out there as you cook along with me
20:25
and think about things that go on in your family. And I can't wait until I'm back again with you next week
20:35
Till then, friends. Mmm. Mmm. Hey, y'all
20:51
It's Paula Deen. Now, if you enjoyed this video, be sure to like it and click the subscribe button
20:58
as well as a notification bell to be alerted when I post a video
21:02
Love and best dishes, y'all
