- As we continue our tour of downtown Savannah,
0:04
we're now at one of the most popular squares.
0:08
We're in Forsyth Park,
0:11
and it is a wonderful area
0:13
where people come to just enjoy the surroundings.
0:18
I think there's a restaurant over here now, isn't it, Eddie?
0:21
- [Eddie] I think down by the band shell,
0:23
they may have something now. - Yeah, yeah.
0:26
They'll have a farmer's market here sometimes on Saturdays.
0:31
Just a lot of things to see and do.
0:35
So this is at the very end of Bull Street.
0:39
- [Eddie] So this really is-
0:40
- [Paula Deen] This is the last square, isn't it?
0:42
- This was the- - From the river.
0:43
- [Eddie] Well, right.
0:44
It's not really considered a square.
0:45
- It's a park. - It's a park.
0:48
And it is a very big park, it goes-
0:52
- [Eddie] All the way down.
0:53
I think it goes a mile down.
0:55
- Oh, look at that red bird.
1:00
- You'll see people skateboarding.
1:02
You'll see them out here playing football.
1:07
I remember when Jack graduated from BC,
1:11
they all gathered here in Forsyth Park.
1:14
I think it was for the parade.
1:16
And actually, that's what this was actually created for,
1:21
- [Eddie] Yeah, back in-
1:23
And it was actually, I think, created almost...
1:27
Almost like a century after Savannah was founded in 1733.
1:32
- [Eddie] And I think this was laid out around 1840-
1:35
- Eddie, you know, you could really pick up some extra money
1:38
being a tour guide. (laughs)
1:41
Because when he moved to Savannah
1:43
to start going to SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design,
1:48
he really, really checked his new city out,
1:54
from stem to stern, y'all.
2:02
- [Eddie] So the fountain was just repaired.
2:05
They completely disassembled it and-
2:09
- [Eddie] Shipped it off and it was completely worked over.
2:14
And it just arrived back in Savannah,
2:17
what, maybe about six months ago?
2:19
- [Paula Deen] Wow, yeah.
2:20
And they die this green
2:24
at St. Patrick's time.
2:27
They used to die the river, didn't they Eddie?
2:30
- Yes, yes. - At St. Patrick's, but-
2:32
- [Eddie] But our water,
2:34
the Savannah River was so murky
2:35
and the green didn't work-
2:36
- [Paula Deen] So dark.
2:37
Yeah, you wouldn't be able to see it.
2:39
- So they've got swans- - Isn't beautiful.
2:43
- [Eddie] And merman.
2:46
- [Paula Deen] So beautiful.
2:48
And you know, Eddie, I don't know if you noticed,
2:50
but we passed one couple
2:53
that was having their pictures made.
2:56
And I noticed she had on an engagement ring.
2:59
Handsome, beautiful young couple
3:02
taking their engagement pictures down here around town.
3:07
Many, many beautiful spots- - Oh, Savannah is definitely
3:09
a destination place for weddings.
3:14
So y'all can see we're headed to the other end of the park.
3:19
And Eddie said that there's a fragrance garden down here
3:23
that I didn't know about.
3:25
So we're going to do some smelling.
3:28
Not spelling, smelling.
3:31
You know, I told you there's a lot of things
3:33
that people do here at Forsyth Park.
3:36
There is a yoga class going on over there
3:39
on that part of the park.
3:41
And I tell you what, I need to be there, but I ain't.
3:49
So this is the fragrance garden, y'all.
3:51
And they keep it locked.
3:54
- [Eddie] People have weddings in there.
3:58
Look at how sweet that is.
4:00
Look at the roses, Eddie.
4:04
- [Paula Deen] I wonder if there's any gardenias in there.
4:07
I bet there is. - I bet there is, yeah.
4:11
- [Paula Deen] I love that bench over there.
4:14
This truly is a big park, y'all.
4:16
And over there, I saw some kids
4:18
that looked like they had formed a football team
4:23
and were playing football.
4:27
Look, somebody painted their initials on the column.
4:31
- [Eddie] Look at these gates down here.
4:34
- [Paula Deen] All right, there's the engagement couple
4:54
- [Eddie] So this is kind of new.
4:55
I haven't been through Forsyth Park in a while,
4:58
and I haven't seen this little kind of...
5:00
It's like your courtyard- - Uh-huh.
5:03
- With the laid out paths. - Yes.
5:05
- [Eddie] This all looks kinda new.
5:08
- [Paula Deen] Uh-huh, I love it.
5:10
We're getting into the Victorian district.
5:15
- [Eddie] Yes, the big...
5:16
Most of the houses in the historic district
5:18
are either brick or stucco.
5:21
- [Eddie] And these are starting to get
5:23
into the wood framed homes
5:24
with the big front porches.
5:26
- The gingerbread house
5:28
is down at the end of the park.
5:32
And I used to do so much catering there
5:34
at the gingerbread house.
5:38
as you could ever hope to find here in Savannah.
5:54
We have a lot of BnBs here in town.
5:57
And I believe that's maybe-
5:59
- [Eddie] That's the Forsyth Park, yeah.
6:00
- [Paula Deen] Forsyth Park Inn.
6:03
And you see those people over there rocking on the chairs.
6:06
They are sitting up there
6:09
enjoying some of the sights and sounds here in Savannah.
6:14
- [Eddie] I always liked this red brick one.
6:20
It really sticks out, doesn't it?
6:25
Against all the wood houses.
6:33
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
