- Can you believe that this little girl, Paula Deen,
0:17
is fixing to take the adventure of her life?
0:22
She's getting married! (Paula laughing)
0:27
I realized that I've bitten off a lot.
0:32
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
0:34
Before I can walk down that aisle,
0:36
before I can even get to the church,
0:39
I've got a lot of things I've got to do.
0:41
And I'm gonna be counting on a lot of people
0:45
to help me get there. (gentle music)
0:50
I started cooking when I was 18 years old.
0:55
I came from a family of very good Southern cooks.
0:58
And that love of food was passed on down to me.
1:02
I was 42 years old.
1:04
And in order for me to move on,
1:07
I had to be able to tend to myself and my sons.
1:10
And the only thing I had,
1:12
and the only thing that I really loved was my cooking.
1:16
So I turned to my stove. (gentle music)
1:19
I started a business called The Bag Lady.
1:22
The Bag Lady will be 15 years old its next birthday.
1:27
And when I think back over what all has happened to me,
1:31
15 years is a very short time for a meager little business
1:37
with the value of $200 to wind up where I am right now.
1:45
I have a 15,000 square foot restaurant
1:50
that's been blessed with a lot of guests.
1:55
I have two fabulous sons.
1:58
I have a wonderful brother that I couldn't do without.
2:02
I have my Aunt Peggy, which,
2:06
she's been there through this whole thing.
2:09
I have my own cooking show. I'm fixing to be in a movie.
2:17
I mean, come on. I don't have this good of an imagination.
2:22
I could not have thought all that up.
2:24
I've already been way over blessed.
2:27
And just when I think that, God answers one more prayer,
2:32
and sends me this wonderful man named Michael,
2:35
and two more beautiful, wonderful children.
2:41
Look at that.
2:43
- What is that?
2:44
- It's half of a wing.
2:47
(Paula laughing)
2:52
About three years before I met Michael,
2:56
I added one little line to my prayer at night.
3:01
And that line was, "God, please send me a neighbor."
3:05
'Cause that's my only hope, is a neighbor.
3:09
At the time I lived in downtown Savannah.
3:12
And one day I got up and got a wild hair
3:15
that I wanted to live on the water.
3:18
I only looked at this one place.
3:21
And I moved in and I said, okay, to my animals,
3:23
"This is where we're gonna stay the rest of our life."
3:26
Well, I had actually taken a hiatus from the restaurant
3:30
to write my third cookbook.
3:33
And my cousin Don and I were sitting over at the computer
3:35
just working around on that cookbook,
3:37
when Otis and Sam, the dogs ran over
3:40
to let me know they had to go outside.
3:43
So we did just like we did every other time.
3:46
We went to the back door on the water side.
3:49
We always took a ride, and went to the square.
3:52
Well, this particular day, they got to the back door,
3:56
turned around and looked at me, turned left.
3:58
And here I was, chasing these dogs, hollering,
4:03
"Y'all, please stop. Please stop!"
4:06
Well, they ran around this big, big wall,
4:10
and there was just enough room to shimmy around this wall,
4:14
trying not to fall into that water.
4:17
And they took me straight up to this man
4:20
that was outside propped on his fence,
4:22
talking on his cell phone.
4:25
- When Paula and I first met,
4:29
about two weeks later, she came back,
4:30
and Paula asked if I knew anything about boats.
4:33
I think she had done some investigating,
4:35
knowing that I did know something.
4:37
So eventually we took a ride out to Wassaw Sound.
4:40
It was a beautiful sunset,
4:42
and we've pretty much been dating ever since.
4:44
We hit it off right away.
4:46
I tell her it was love at first sight.
4:49
- [Paula] He's such a great guy. It's just been amazing.
4:57
(gentle music)
5:00
- I didn't think marriage was in my future.
5:03
And I think Paula's about the same way.
5:05
And maybe that's what the big draw was,
5:07
is I wasn't looking, and Paula wasn't either.
5:11
I'm what they call a docking pilot.
5:15
Docking pilot goes aboard a ship and directs the tugboats
5:19
and the ship's movement to create maneuvers of the ship
5:23
to power or the tugs power can't do by themselves.
5:28
So I'm like the valet parking for ship.
5:31
My younger brother, Nick, is a river pilot.
5:35
And Hank is a priest. He prays that we don't hit anything.
5:41
- He and Paula are real happy together.
5:44
And I'm thrilled. I'm delighted.
5:47
- Love is so much better the second time around.
5:50
By the time you get my age,
5:52
you know what the important things are.
5:55
He loves me for who I am, and I love him for who he is.
6:00
If he didn't have a nickel, I really could care less.
6:03
But the fact that he is accomplished in his own life
6:09
just makes it more secure.
6:13
So I'm marrying my neighbor.
6:16
(Paula laughing)
6:21
(gentle music)
6:22
I am feeling more and more bogged in,
6:25
between the restaurant and the show and home,
6:28
and trying to spend time with you,
6:31
and trying to spend time with all of our children, and,
6:33
- [Michael] Oh, you may need some help.
6:35
You may need a, maybe a wedding planner.
6:37
- [Paula] Well, maybe you're right.
6:42
- Oh, we've got 20 people coming in
6:44
at a quarter to three today,
6:45
so let's just make sure we carry through the push.
6:47
Couldn't be worse timing for a late big party.
6:50
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
6:53
And if you do.
6:55
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
6:58
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
7:02
And we'll be right back after the break.
7:07
- There's a lot to do
7:10
before I'm able to walk down that aisle.
7:14
(gentle music)
7:16
Well, I'm going to check out the restaurant.
7:20
- But if you step foot on the floor,
7:22
then you're gonna be stuck there for the night.
7:23
(Paula laughing)
7:26
- I just needed this, 'cause I'm stressing,
7:29
I'm stressing, I'm stressing.
7:30
So I had to just touch my comfort zone.
7:33
- [Speaker] Right. - See you, baby!
7:36
- Depending on where you have 'em in the oven,
7:38
- Right. All your ovens have hot spots.
7:41
And that's why you have to rotate your pan.
7:48
Are you sure you baked it?
7:49
- Yes, ma'am.
7:53
- Well, it looks scrumptious!
7:56
(gentle music)
8:00
- [Michael] Well, how are you feeling?
8:01
- I hate thinking that I can't handle it all.
8:07
That I can't do it all.
8:10
- [Michael] Well, I think your plate's pretty full.
8:12
So I don't think- - It is, it really is.
8:14
- Don't think you're a failure
8:15
if you're not not doing it all, you may need some help.
8:19
- And my dress! My dress.
8:23
Can I tell you how torturous it is
8:27
to walk into that wedding shop
8:31
and seeing all those dresses about this big around?
8:35
And dresses that fit me look like grandmother of the bride?
8:40
- Well, I know it'll be beautiful.
8:42
- It's still, I don't, it's just a,
8:44
- Granny. - Now, you don't help any!
8:50
And I finally broke down and shared with Michael
8:53
that I was on the verge of becoming overwhelmed.
8:58
And at his suggestion,
9:02
he thinks I should hire a wedding planner.
9:05
And we don't ever like to admit that we can't do everything,
9:10
that we're not superwoman, but I think he's right.
9:13
So I'm gonna contact a wedding planner.
9:16
Trish Windom, she's great. She'll keep me in line.
9:19
She'll snatch and jerk me. Make me do what I'm supposed to.
9:24
- Tell me what kind of wedding you want.
9:27
- I want this being a second marriage,
9:29
being a Southern woman, I want it in very good taste.
9:33
- [Tricia] Okay.
9:34
- I want you to keep me from making any big bad faux pas.
9:39
- [Tricia] All right.
9:39
And you're gonna marry at Bethesda Chapel.
9:41
- [Paula] Yes.
9:42
- [Tricia] Which is a wonderful place.
9:44
One thing you gotta think about
9:45
is it will only hold 100 people.
9:47
- [Paula] Yes.
9:48
- Now how about your cake at the reception?
9:50
I just happened to think about the cake while we're talking.
9:52
- We getting to the best part now.
9:52
- We're we're getting to the good part now.
9:54
Well, we gotta get you married first
9:55
before we get to the good part.
9:57
All right. Mollie Stone does by far, the best cake.
10:00
- Yes. I'd love for Mollie to.
10:01
- Okay, you're gonna have to have a pretty big one,
10:04
because you're gonna have a lot of people.
10:05
(upbeat music)
10:08
- You know, I'm so glad I didn't have lunch today,
10:10
because I think I remember Trish telling me
10:13
that Mollie always gives you a sample size
10:16
to try of your wedding cake.
10:19
I tell you what.
10:21
- You want me to do it? - You know me.
10:23
- Yeah.
10:23
- So you pick the cake that matches my personality.
10:27
- All right. You pick the shape.
10:29
Are you feeling round? You feeling square?
10:31
- Some days I feel...
10:33
- Well, what do you feel like?
10:35
- Let me see what I feel like today.
10:37
- Yeah. How do you feel?
10:37
- I feel pretty round. - Pretty round? Okay.
10:40
All right, now look at this.
10:42
That to me, is the most simple, tailored and elegant cake.
10:46
- Well, listen, I ain't here to make this simple on you.
10:49
- It ain't simple to do! (Paula laughing)
10:51
- You wanna eat some?
10:55
- Well, what you think? You offer a fat girl cake?
10:58
- Yep.
10:59
- You think she's gonna turn it down?
11:00
- The fat girl is gonna cut the fat girl some cake.
11:04
(Paula laughing)
11:06
- [Mollie] It is a sour cream pound cake,
11:09
with an almond and orange extract.
11:11
- [Paula] It's my favorite wedding cake.
11:13
- And an almond buttercream.
11:20
That's better.
11:21
- Michael's gonna love this wedding.
11:22
- Yes!
11:23
- On the groom's cake, believe it or not,
11:25
Michael is not a real huge chocolate cake man.
11:30
- What does he like?
11:30
- [Paula] His mother used to make him like a banana nut.
11:34
- Like a banana nut bread, but a cake?
11:37
- Yeah, yeah. And she made a cake.
11:40
That's his all-time favorite.
11:42
- What kind of icing? - Cream cheese.
11:46
Can you do something like that?
11:48
- Yeah, I could. Let's figure it out.
11:49
- You'd make him a happy man.
11:50
- That'd be fun. I'd like to lick that bowl.
11:53
- Would you believe I've just eaten wedding cake
11:56
and got to go try on the dress?
12:01
Sitting here now,
12:03
I wish I hadn't eaten as many pieces of fried chicken
12:06
and whole cakes as I did! (Paula faux weeping)
12:12
'Cause I still think of myself as being 18,
12:15
and that cute little body I had.
12:18
And then I face,
12:19
- [Michael] Well, you're beautiful to me.
12:20
- Well, thank you. But no, I saw in that mirror.
12:24
I saw in that mirror with those wedding dresses and I said,
12:27
"Oh my God!"
12:29
By the way, I was just thinking,
12:31
what is that cake you told me
12:35
that your mother used to make for you,
12:36
it was your favorite cake?
12:37
- Oh, banana nut cake. - Banana nut.
12:40
- Yeah, she used to make it for my birthday.
12:42
- Did she? - Yeah.
12:44
- And what was it like? What did it taste like?
12:48
- Banana nut cake. (Michael laughing)
12:51
- Tasted like bananas and nuts?
12:53
- Yeah. - Was it moist or was it,
12:57
- Real moist, yeah. - Dense?
12:59
- Moist, and had a white icing on it.
13:00
Like a cream cheese icing.
13:01
- Oh, really? - Yeah.
13:04
- Mm. I don't know what made me think of that.
13:06
I was just wondering.
13:08
My mind, it just jumps from one crazy thing.
13:13
(gentle music)
13:16
I want the food to be very representative
13:18
of a Southern wedding.
13:20
I wanna prepare things that the staff is good at.
13:24
I think I want to go with more traditional.
13:31
This is by far the hardest part to get married.
13:37
I hope y'all are enjoying the show
13:39
and I want to hear from you.
13:41
Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me
13:44
make by just leaving a short comment below.
13:48
Now, let's get back to the show, y'all.
13:53
My biggest concern at this point probably is the guest list.
13:59
- But we got 600, 700 names on this thing, Paula.
14:05
What are we gonna do?
14:06
- We've got 20 people coming in at a quarter to three today.
14:09
- This is by far the hardest part to getting married.
14:14
- Why do we need to be stressing?
14:16
- All right, you call off.
14:18
- [Speaker 1] Okay.
14:19
- Couldn't be worse timing for a late big party.
14:22
- Okay. Got him.
14:24
- [Speaker 1] Okay. Andrews.
14:26
- Bobby, did you ever find mom?
14:29
Is she gonna come down and sign?
14:31
- You know, I'm marrying Michael,
14:33
and I never get to see him.
14:35
Because I'm so caught up in all this stuff.
14:37
So I just want to get through,
14:39
get through so I can see my man.
14:40
- [Speaker 1] This is the hardest part.
14:41
- Yeah.
14:45
I gotta run out to the church now and meet the guys.
14:50
I mean, since I couldn't fix your supper,
14:51
the least I can do is cut you a banana, couldn't I?
14:54
- Mm hmm.
14:56
- So okay. Look over the paper.
14:59
(gentle music)
15:01
There it is!
15:07
It makes me weepy just to, just to see it.
15:14
Hey, guys! - Hey, mom. You excited?
15:16
- What, oh!
15:19
Makes me wanna cry.
15:21
- Don't cry yet. - You're not inside yet.
15:23
It's beautiful. - I know.
15:25
It made me wanna cry when I pulled up and looked at it.
15:27
- [Bobby] Ain't it gorgeous? - Oh, look at it.
15:33
Oh, it's perfect!
15:36
- [Jamie] What do you think, mom?
15:37
- And I've already got your dresses picked out.
15:39
(all laughing)
15:43
And guess what color I picked out?
15:44
A pale yellow for you. I think it'll be beautiful.
15:50
- So what do you think, mom? - Oh, I love it.
15:52
Who's gonna give you away?
15:54
- [Paula] Bubba. - Bubba's gonna.
15:55
- And y'all are the bridesmaids.
15:57
- [Bobby] That's what we figured.
16:01
- I was sitting there in the chapel thinking,
16:03
"I know that I'm doing the right thing marrying Michael."
16:07
I know without a shadow of a doubt that I found my soulmate.
16:14
Without a shadow of a doubt.
16:17
We're building up a wonderful home on the water
16:21
where the dogs led me to Michael.
16:25
That's very exciting too.
16:27
To know that you finally found your permanent nest.
16:31
Oh, I tell you what, I just 10 years ago I would never, ever
16:36
have thought things could be this way.
16:40
- Oh, me neither. And most people at our age are downsizing.
16:43
- Yeah. And we're upsizing. - We're upsizing!
16:46
That's 'cause I'm gonna get pregnant
16:47
on our wedding night, aren't I?
16:48
- Ah, I'm not sure about that.
16:53
- [Paula] Oh, gosh! It's beautiful, Michael.
16:57
- The house looks beautiful there, huh?
16:58
- It does. It's gonna be gorgeous.
17:02
- I'm excited.
17:03
You know, I just don't sit down and think about,
17:04
"Wow, mom's getting married." - [Bobby] Yeah.
17:05
- I think, oh, we've got 500 people
17:08
are gonna hit the front door at seven o'clock Saturday,
17:10
- [Bobby] Yeah, yeah. - Downtown.
17:12
- [Bobby] Yeah. - With no parking.
17:14
- [Bobby] Yeah.
17:15
- And we gotta get 'em up and out.
17:16
And with the live music and the,
17:18
we're having three bars run and all the food.
17:21
I'd say around 7:30, two cocktails in, I'll be fine.
17:28
- Yeah. AM? (Jamie laughing)
17:34
- There was no question at all
17:37
that the reception was gonna be at the restaurant.
17:39
(indistinct chatter)
17:41
- Go ahead and count out 30 settings of silverware.
17:44
- How you holding up, brother? You all right?
17:46
- Not a salad fork. Just a hard fork, and a knife.
17:50
Go ahead and get those downstairs too.
17:52
- Food's on the way down right now?
17:54
Perfect. Perfect!
17:56
- Second napkins. We got 28 this evening at 12 o'clock.
17:59
All right, beautiful. Thanks, guys.
18:01
Look, let's just try to take all of the restaurant work
18:04
off of Mom.
18:06
There's several good caterers in town.
18:08
You just wanna contract it out
18:10
and not have to worry about it?
18:10
- No! No!
18:13
- What kind of food are you thinking about, Mom?
18:18
Southern stuff, kinda like what we do?
18:19
- Yeah, yeah.
18:20
I want the food to be very representative
18:24
of a Southern wedding.
18:26
I wanna prepare things that the staff is good at.
18:29
- [Jamie] Well, shrimp cocktails and crab cakes for sure.
18:32
- [Paula] Yeah.
18:33
- [Jamie] Carving station, for sure.
18:35
- [Paula] Maybe some shrimp and grits and tomato sandwiches.
18:38
You know, you can't have a party without tomato sandwiches.
18:41
So that'll take a tremendous amount off of me.
18:45
- [Jamie] How about if we did a little hand sandwiches?
18:48
- [Paula] Sounds great.
18:50
Are you talking about using the...
18:52
- [Jamie] The wing drumette, instead of the chicken leg,
18:54
and do smaller. - I think that's perfect.
18:57
- Let me play with that and see if we can pull that off.
18:59
Wouldn't that be neat to have hand sandwiches?
19:02
- I don't know, son. It may be 800 people.
19:05
Could be that many.
19:07
But if you'll work with Theresa and Brandon.
19:10
- I will.
19:11
- Just let these people know that you're there for 'em
19:14
to help share the responsibility.
19:18
- Of course.
19:19
- Yeah? - On set.
19:21
- Okay. Dad gummit.
19:24
I love you guys, but I gotta go.
19:25
- Love you too.
19:26
- I gotta get on the set. - Love you. See you in a bit.
19:29
