(upbeat music)
0:01
- [Paula] Hey y'all, I'm Paula Deen.
0:03
Now you girls and boys gathered around,
0:05
cause I'm cooking with the kids today.
0:07
(upbeat music continues)
0:08
The dishes on this menu are for all ages.
0:12
So to get the kids excited,
0:14
I'm gonna let them help me from start to finish.
0:17
By bringing them to the supermarket with me,
0:19
to help get some ingredients.
0:21
(upbeat music continues)
0:21
And then back in the kitchen,
0:23
I'm gonna start with a wedge salad,
0:24
which looks as terrific as it tastes.
0:27
And it'll just get everybody at home,
0:29
eating their veggies.
0:30
And for the main course,
0:32
I'm gonna bake a simple
0:33
but tasty chicken
0:34
and rice casserole.
0:36
This gonna have those kids just begging for seconds
0:39
and for a fun side dish,
0:40
I'm gonna teach the kids
0:41
how to make a pineapple upside-down biscuit
0:44
that they're gonna just love taking credit for.
0:47
And last but not least,
0:49
I'm gonna let the kids help me roll out
0:51
one of my childhood favorites,
0:53
peanut butter balls.
0:54
They're so easy,
0:55
even the tiniest hands can help prepare them.
0:58
So whether y'all are young
1:00
or whether you're just young at heart,
1:02
y'all grab your apron and you're chilling.
1:04
Cause y'all don't wanna miss this one.
1:07
The very earliest memory I remember,
1:09
I was probably three years old
1:11
and it was in my grandmother's kitchen at her restaurant.
1:15
That's where it all begins.
1:17
That's where everything begins in the home,
1:20
is in the kitchen
1:22
and immediate gratification of eating good food
1:26
and sharing it with people that you love.
1:29
Well today, I wanted to bring back some little boys
1:33
into my kitchen,
1:34
because it's been a long time,
1:37
since my boys were little.
1:39
So I'm grabbing up some of the neighbor's children
1:42
two precious love boys,
1:43
their name is Angus and Duncan.
1:46
And I'm going to take them to the store with me,
1:48
and we gonna shop for some very simple foods
1:52
and I'm gonna bring them back to the kitchen
1:54
and we're gonna cook together.
1:56
So y'all please stick around with me,
1:58
because they're adorable.
2:00
And the food is delicious.
2:02
(upbeat music)
2:03
(car revving)
2:04
(upbeat music continues)
2:09
Y'all ready? - Yep.
2:11
(Paula pushing a trolley)
2:14
- [Paula] What does that say? - Fresh Yucca.
2:16
(Paula laughing)
2:17
(upbeat music)
2:18
- These are the roots.
2:19
This is a turnip root.
2:22
It looks like a baseball kind of, doesn't it?
2:23
- What's this? - That's a baseball bat.
2:27
(Paula laughing)
2:29
All right, come on let's keep moving.
2:30
(upbeat music)
2:34
- Chips, snacks, noda, water juice-
2:36
- Noda! - Oh soda.
2:38
(Paula laughing)
2:40
- Why don't we go on to checkout
2:41
cause we got peanut butter balls to make.
2:44
(upbeat music)
2:45
Our order comes to $37 and five cents.
2:49
So can you give me the money please Angus.
2:51
- I don't have any money- - You don't?
2:55
I thought you were buying.
2:56
(Paula laughing)
3:00
(car revving)
3:02
(upbeat music)
3:06
I had fun at the grocery store those two boys,
3:08
found out a lot about them.
3:10
I found out that a lot of kids don't like their vegetables,
3:14
but I'm gonna hide them in a casserole.
3:17
All right, now I'm going to start quickly
3:18
by putting a little oil in here
3:20
and heating it up.
3:21
And I don't know if y'all
3:23
have ever used these little choppers?
3:24
(Paula chopping)
3:25
This is a great way to chop onions
3:27
and not get that smell all over you.
3:29
See how great that did?
3:31
All right, so we're gonna throw our onions
3:33
over into our skillet
3:35
and we gonna sauté these until they're opaque.
3:39
I'm gonna come over here while those are sautéing.
3:41
And I have used just a box of wild and white rice,
3:47
and we're just gonna mix this all together.
3:49
It's real easy to do.
3:51
(food sizzling)
3:52
Mayonnaise, supplies that all that you need
3:56
and the flavor in the casserole.
3:59
Now this is just diced up water chestnuts.
4:03
(food sizzling)
4:03
They give it a nice crunch.
4:05
So we're going to throw that in,
4:07
and just jarred pumenar
4:09
and cheddar cheese
4:11
and just canned green beans.
4:13
(food sizzling)
4:14
All right, now I'm gonna use
4:15
a can of cream of celery soup.
4:19
It just gives it a totally different flavor.
4:22
But if you like cream of mushroom
4:24
or anything like that,
4:26
you could use that too.
4:27
(food sizzling)
4:28
You know what?
4:29
I bet this would even be good served cold as a salad.
4:32
(food sizzling)
4:34
All right, now I'm gonna come over here.
4:37
I've got my roasted chicken from the grocery store.
4:40
Now I like to leave that in pretty nice chunks,
4:44
so that you can see it.
4:45
I don't like that to be so minced up
4:48
that you wonder what the media is in there.
4:51
(food sizzling)
4:52
Right, let's give these onions another quick stir,
4:54
(food sizzling)
4:55
but I do want to wilt these real good.
4:57
(pan ringing)
4:59
That's about got it.
5:00
(food sizzling)
5:14
Wild rice takes longer to cook
5:16
than long grain rice.
5:18
I think it takes maybe 25 minutes,
5:21
but just follow the instructions on the box of rice
5:24
and you won't have any problems.
5:30
How quick was that?
5:32
And how good does it look?
5:34
And it make, if you've got any leftovers,
5:37
it make a nice little lunch to send to school with the kids.
5:42
All right, now we gonna throw this in,
5:45
to a preheated oven 350 degrees,
5:49
and we're just gonna cook it until it's bubbly.
5:52
But I think this is so pretty
5:54
with all the colors coming through.
5:57
(clanging utensils)
5:58
I'm gonna make us a delicious wedge salad,
6:01
and we serve these at the restaurant
6:03
and people love them.
6:05
Now all we're gonna do is,
6:07
we gonna to take a clean head of lettuce.
6:09
This has been washed
6:11
and put in the refrigerator for it to crisp up.
6:14
And I'm just gonna
6:16
(knife cutting)
6:18
cut this lettuce into wedges.
6:22
All right,
6:22
and you can make your wedges as big
6:24
or as little as you like.
6:25
But I do like a hardy wedge
6:28
and I think I'm gonna slice a little green onion
6:31
to put on top for color.
6:33
(knife slicing)
6:34
And I wanna apologize to y'all about something.
6:37
I don't have time to show you,
6:39
how to make my homemade blue cheese dressing,
6:42
but I promise I'll do it in another show.
6:45
All right, now I'm gonna just top this
6:47
with blue cheese dressing.
6:54
Don't be stingy that's the first rule.
6:57
All right,
6:58
now I'm just gonna put some diced tomatoes on it
7:01
and I'm gonna top it with my spring onions.
7:05
And now I'm gonna add some more blue cheese.
7:08
I'm just gonna put a few crumbles on it like that.
7:11
Now the last ingredient
7:12
that I'm gonna top our salad with to me is the best
7:16
and naturally you might figure,
7:17
it's a little pig.
7:19
Because I'm gonna top this with crisp bacon.
7:23
There's a couple of ways
7:24
that you can do your bacon.
7:26
You can do it with a knife,
7:28
or you can just crumble it with your hands,
7:30
or you can use kitchen scissors.
7:33
All right,
7:34
but I'm gonna top that with that bacon.
7:37
(Paula chuckling)
7:39
Now that salad took about two to three minutes
7:42
and I promise you,
7:44
you just will not find anything
7:46
that tastes any better.
7:49
Coming up next.
7:50
I want y'all to stick around
7:51
because got some heavenly biscuits.
7:55
They are gonna be pineapple upside-down biscuits.
7:58
So y'all want to stay tuned
7:59
cause the kids are gonna love them.
8:07
I so hope y'all are enjoying the show.
8:09
And if you do.
8:11
Be sure to click like, subscribe and
8:14
notification bell so you'll never miss a video.
8:18
And we'll be right back after the break.
8:25
So I want us to move along try next dish,
8:28
because you're gonna love this one.
8:30
But before we get started,
8:31
it's time to take that chicken
8:33
and rice casserole out.
8:35
And we're gonna need to turn up our oven to about 400.
8:39
Oh, look at that good old comfort food dish.
8:44
All right, I'm gonna show y'all,
8:46
how to make some of the neatest biscuits.
8:48
(Paula laughing)
8:49
(dog panting)
8:50
It's you again?
8:52
(Paula laughing)
8:53
You knew I just took that off the oven.
8:55
(Paula laughing)
8:57
Now this is not gonna make but 10 biscuits
9:00
(Paula spraying)
9:00
and you can see that my container will hold 12.
9:03
So in the other two,
9:05
I'm gonna pour a little water in
9:07
(water pouring)
9:08
because I don't want my muffin tin to burn.
9:11
All right, now we gonna start
9:14
with some crushed pineapple.
9:16
I think I discovered this,
9:19
when I was wanting some different breads.
9:21
I was wanting some easy breads
9:24
(utensils clanging)
9:25
and I really don't need,
9:27
(fluid pouring)
9:28
but like a 10 ounce can.
9:31
All right,
9:32
so we got our pineapple drained over here.
9:34
(utensils clanging)
9:35
And we got our pineapple juice
9:37
that we're gonna come back to.
9:39
Now let's see,
9:40
I'm gonna need a half a cup of brown sugar.
9:45
And I keep my brown sugar in this canister,
9:48
along with a little piece of bread,
9:49
because that keeps your brown sugar
9:53
from getting so hard on you.
9:55
So you see how easy it was for me to dip in there
9:59
and get that brown sugar.
10:04
All right, so we got our brown sugar
10:06
and we gonna add our drained crushed pineapple,
10:11
along with about a half a stick of softened butter.
10:20
It looks so good, doesn't it?
10:21
When I was forming like this,
10:23
I kinda wanted a quick
10:25
and easy like pineapple upside-down cake.
10:28
And I said well, how come I can't do it with a can biscuit?
10:31
(utensils clanging)
10:33
All right.
10:34
(utensils clanging)
10:35
So now we're gonna take a spoonful of this
10:39
and we gonna put it
10:42
into the bottom of each of our muffin cups.
10:50
Hmm, looks just yummy already don't it?
10:54
(utensils clanging)
10:58
All right, so the only thing we need now,
11:01
to make it a pineapple upside-down cake is a cherry.
11:04
So I'm gonna come in here
11:06
and I'm gonna stick a cherry into each one,
11:08
and I'm gonna stick it all the way down in there
11:11
and make sure it's hitting the bottom.
11:13
Because when we take our biscuits out,
11:15
we gonna invert them.
11:16
And we want that cherry to be seen.
11:21
Now we're just gonna take our biscuits.
11:24
It scares me every time they always do that.
11:29
And you can use any brand of biscuit
11:31
that you like.
11:33
I love the buttermilk biscuits.
11:37
All right, so remember a few minutes ago,
11:39
I told you when these biscuits are ready,
11:40
we gonna invert them so, our pineapple
11:43
and our cherry is gonna be on the top
11:45
and you know how children love cherries.
11:48
So all I'm going to do now,
11:49
is just take a little of our pineapple juice
11:53
and just pour right on top of each biscuit.
11:58
Just like that.
12:00
So good, in 12 minutes,
12:03
we're gonna have a biscuit
12:05
that tastes so much like pineapple upside-down cake.
12:10
All right.
12:11
Oh, I got two of them back here now.
12:15
(oven closing)
12:18
All right.
12:19
I think it's time to taste the chicken
12:21
and rice casserole.
12:25
Oh gosh!
12:28
Look how pretty that is on that green plate.
12:38
Love chicken and rice.
12:42
Hmm hmm.
12:47
(utensils clanging)
12:48
It's so good.
12:50
Y'all stick around cause...
12:52
Next I'm gonna be sharing a recipe with you.
12:55
That's one of my childhood favorite things.
12:58
Peanut butter balls.
13:01
And those adorable boys are gonna be back here
13:03
in the kitchen with me.
13:04
So y'all don't go too far.
13:11
I hope y'all are enjoying the show
13:13
and I want to hear from you.
13:14
Tell me what recipes or videos you'd like to see me
13:17
make by just leaving a short comment below.
13:21
Now, let's get back to the show, y'all.
13:27
I wanna share something with y'all.
13:29
When I was probably eight or nine years old,
13:32
every Friday,
13:33
they served us homemade vegetable soup,
13:36
buttered toast
13:38
and peanut butter balls.
13:41
And I wanna teach y'all how to make them.
13:44
All right, let's get to cooking cause I'm starving.
13:47
How about y'all?
13:48
- Yeah. - [Paula] Yeah.
13:49
Well, let's start adding our peanut butter.
13:52
Here let me move this bowl down there for you
13:54
and I'll help you now if you need it.
13:58
And my grandma has always said,
14:01
"waste not won't not".
14:02
Do you know what that means?
14:04
- Hmm hmm.
14:05
- That means if you don't waste things
14:07
and you take good care of them,
14:09
that you'll never have to worry about being without.
14:13
All right, how you come in pal.
14:14
- Great!
14:16
- All right, let's get this out.
14:20
All right, we got it all out.
14:21
The next thing we gonna do,
14:23
is add our honey.
14:25
You like honey? - Yeah.
14:27
- Oh I do too, oh yeah.
14:32
All right, do you know what it is Angus?
14:38
You gonna taste it?
14:41
- Cake mix.
14:42
(Paula laughing)
14:44
- It's powdered milk.
14:46
We're gonna mix it up in that peanut butter
14:48
and that honey
14:49
and it's just gonna make us the most wonderful dessert.
14:51
- Yay. - Yay.
14:53
- How many are we gonna make?
14:55
- Oh, probably about 20.
14:57
Is that enough for you? - [Angus] Yeah.
14:59
- Yeah will that fill you up?
15:00
(utensils clanging)
15:01
All right.
15:03
I wanna show you how I like to do this, okay?
15:06
- Okay.
15:07
- So get up here and get ready, okay?
15:10
- Okay.
15:12
(Paula laughing)
15:13
- Ain't that better than old spoon?
15:15
Now see how much easier that is?
15:17
- [Angus] Yeah.
15:18
- All right, let's let Duncan do it just a second.
15:21
All right, here we go Duncan.
15:22
(utensils clanging)
15:24
All right, you guys ready to roll them up into balls?
15:28
- [Duncan] Yep.
15:28
- All right, now how big do you want yours to be?
15:31
You gonna have to oh...
15:34
- This big.
15:35
- Ooh that's a big one,
15:36
but why don't we try like-
15:38
- That's the- - This big-
15:39
- One I was trying- - [Paula] Yeah.
15:41
- I could you just eat it?
15:43
- I know it,
15:44
and we're fixing two in just a few minutes.
15:45
All right, Duncan.
15:46
(utensils clanging)
15:47
Now y'all take these and roll them up.
15:49
Those look perfect.
15:52
You can see that you have gotten
15:53
a perfectly smooth ball.
15:56
Both of you guys.
15:58
So now what do you think you would like in yours?
16:01
- Crushed sugar. - [Paula] Okay.
16:03
You take yours
16:04
and you roll it around in the powdered sugar.
16:06
What do you want Duncan? - Corn flakes.
16:09
- Corn flakes there you go pal-
16:10
- Donuts?
16:12
It's like donuts.
16:13
- And I've gotten to have one.
16:15
Now y'all know how I love pecans.
16:18
So I think I'm gonna mine in pecans
16:19
and then you know what I'm going to do?
16:22
- What?
16:23
- I liked sugar too.
16:24
Alright, so I'm ready to toast,
16:26
cause I'm ready to eat.
16:28
So to y'all.
16:34
- Dumb.
16:35
(Paula laughing)
16:38
- Ain't that yummy? - [Angus] Hmm.
16:41
- All right, I got one more extra treat for y'all today.
16:46
I've got some pineapple upside-down biscuits.
16:51
Do y'all like pineapple?
16:52
- Yeah. - Yes and butter
16:55
and brown sugar.
16:56
Well, I've had them cooling over here.
16:59
So we gonna have one more extra treat.
17:02
Now I've got to get rid of this water
17:04
in the muffin tins,
17:07
and we gonna quickly,
17:09
give them a turn.
17:14
(Paula laughing)
17:16
How's that for magic?
17:18
- Yeah (laughs). - Yeah.
17:21
All right, there you go.
17:24
Let's get you that pretty one.
17:31
Your neck good?
17:32
- Aah hah.
17:33
- Well, I want you guys to stick around with me
17:35
because I know there's probably a lot of boys
17:38
and girls out there
17:39
that are kind of picky eaters.
17:41
And I wanna share with their moms
17:43
and dads a few quick tricks
17:46
that might turn a finicky eaters

And we'll be right back after the break.
18:10
You know I think every family
18:13
probably has one child that is a picky eater.
18:16
They won't eat anything.
18:19
What I want to share with y'all a few tips
18:22
that might help you,
18:23
to get that picky little youngin,
18:25
(soft music)
18:26
to eat properly and peanut butter
18:29
and jelly sandwiches work real well.
18:33
Do you use a cookie cutter
18:35
and cut them out.
18:36
In fact, you wanna let the children do this themselves
18:40
because they almost feel like they made it.
18:42
But look at that pretty little heart
18:45
and you can do the same thing
18:47
with a tortilla bread.
18:48
You can give them different cookie cutters.
18:52
Look at this cute little duck
18:53
(soft music)
18:55
and you can put a little meat
18:57
and cheese, lettuce and tomato
18:58
and let them use a knife
19:00
and a fork to eat it.
19:01
(soft music continues)
19:01
You can let them cut their pancakes out.
19:04
Let's try a cat.
19:06
(soft music continues)
19:10
Look at the cute little cat.
19:11
(soft music continues)
19:13
And you can do the same thing with cookies.
19:15
Although we usually don't have to tie
19:18
some to eat their cookies.
19:19
(soft music continues)
19:20
If you are looking for a healthier meal for the children,
19:23
you can use fresh fruit
19:26
and let them cut out shapes of their fruit.
19:30
And they're much more apt
19:32
to eat a dinosaur
19:34
than a dice of can load.
19:35
(soft music continues)
19:37
And these containers work
19:38
very well for their school lunches.
19:41
It doesn't smash their food
19:43
and you can take these little
19:44
different juices
19:45
and you can freeze them,
19:47
drop them in the sack,
19:48
along with their lunch,
19:49
and it'll keep it chilled.
19:51
So I hope that some of these tips
19:53
and tricks will help you
19:54
to get your finicky eater to eat.
19:57
So y'all come on back.
19:58
I wanna show you everything
19:59
that I've cooked.
20:02
You know, there's just nothing more special
20:05
than spending time
20:06
(birds chirping)
20:07
with your children
20:08
and children are really no different from adults.
20:10
They eat things with their eyes first too.
20:13
And the peanut butter balls are a healthy snack
20:16
and the wedge salad,
20:17
believe it or not,
20:18
I have found that children love it.
20:20
And we've got all these vegetables
20:22
hidden in our chicken casserole.
20:24
You don't have to sell them
20:25
on the pineapple upside-down biscuits
20:28
and who knows,
20:29
you may get more out of it
20:31
than just a good meal.
20:33
So until next time,
20:35
to all you children,
20:37
big and small,
20:38
I send y'all love
20:40
and best dishes from my kitchen to yours.
20:47
