well hey y'all welcome to what's cooking
0:02
with Paula Dean and I come into the
0:05
studio today and they tell me they put
0:07
uh pulled a uh Switcheroo on me uh my
0:11
buddy Jesse Blanco was
0:14
here my friend gusy come on guys come on
0:18
and Lulu and Max are all with me so when
0:21
I came in this morning they said okay um
0:24
we want you to introduce Jesse and then
0:27
Jesse is going to interview you
0:30
so I don't know what they're planning to
0:33
find out that I hadn't already told them
0:35
but we'll see are good morning Jesse I'm
0:38
good I'm good just recuperating from a
0:41
little surgery yeah on my knee you'll be
0:44
back out on tennis court no time oh
0:46
listen I'm planning on uh going dancing
0:49
this Saturday night nice no TV cameras
0:52
around for that one no dancing my
0:54
Dancing Days Are Over I think that's
0:56
what caused this I got asked the other
0:59
day about a week go if I'd be interested
1:01
in in doing one of the local dances for
1:03
charity thing oh yeah yeah I did one for
1:06
for a charity about 3 years ago and I
1:07
won so I told him you know I love the
1:10
cause and I'd love to help but I'm
1:11
retired undefeated I'm not doing it and
1:14
I said but you might want to call Paula
1:17
no no
1:19
honey I don't blame you that was smart
1:22
to go out the winter hey I'm done one
1:24
and done I quit what dance did you win
1:27
with we did um it was kind of a tri to
1:30
Saturday Night Fever so we did we did an
1:33
old disco hustle mixed in with some
1:35
salsa because I'm Hispanic yeah yeah and
1:37
I won by one point by one point yeah and
1:40
I got a big old trophy in my office so
1:42
it was a lot of fun good who was your
1:44
partner um oh she's going to hate me for
1:47
forgetting her name this was about four
1:49
years ago it was with butterfly Ballroom
1:51
here in Savannah and um I'm not familiar
1:54
with that one Ken is the the the
1:56
director there but yeah we uh there's a
1:59
lot of work in that I mean obviously
2:00
with yours everybody got to see cuz the
2:02
cameras were there yes but even Beyond
2:05
with with what we saw of your dances
2:07
there's just so much attention to detail
2:09
and there's some serious focus when
2:11
you're not cutting up because the
2:12
cameras are there you know there there
2:14
really is um uh danc with the Stars
2:18
preferred that you dance six hours a day
2:21
and that was seven days a week so it's
2:23
it was pretty brutal yeah yeah yeah fun
2:26
but it's work yeah yeah yeah what else
2:30
You' been up to oh that's about
2:32
it wow so uh if I Grimace or Gran it's
2:40
just because of pain hit me but
2:41
everything's fine okay very good so
2:44
we're going to go see what our sponsors
2:46
got to say today and then we'll be right
2:48
back and I'm going to turn it over to
2:50

659
3:41
3300 that's 1 800 659
3:46
3300 we're back y'all and uh Jesse's got
3:50
the
3:50
floor and uh so you can ask me anything
3:54
that you want to ask me you driving this
3:56
car yep yeah flying the plane um so you
4:00
uh you you've been busy I thought I was
4:03
busy but you've been really really busy
4:05
I have been very very busy yeah you um
4:07
you you you have a big announcement
4:09
you've got you're you're going to be on
4:11
TV yeah I got a big announcement coming
4:13
up uh we have been working on a new show
4:17
called
4:19
uh positively Paula positively Paula
4:23
somebody said the other day by mistake
4:26
perfectly Paula and that has stuck in my
4:29
brain so ever since that person said
4:32
that I have to stop and think positively
4:34
Paula the kids call that earworm ear an
4:38
earworm yeah cuz it's stuck in your head
4:40
yeah it gets in there and it won't crawl
4:42
out the other side right right uh but
4:44
it's it's a wonderful uh show Jesse I'm
4:48
having so much fun filming it because
4:50
you know we have gone back to basics
4:53
it's it's the show that uh I originally
4:56
started doing what 14 15 years ago right
5:00
and I'm in the kitchen with my
5:04
friends and uh sometimes I'm alone
5:07
sometimes I have guests and it's just
5:11
um you know a
5:14
time for me to um interact and be with
5:19
the audience out there and you know it's
5:22
it's my hope that for 30 minutes they'll
5:26
forget everything that irks them forget
5:29
all their problems just sit back with me
5:32
for 30 minutes and have a good time
5:36
reminisce yeah absolutely I've seen I've
5:38
seen some of the clips um and this is
5:42
partially shot in your home yeah yes it
5:44
is actually shot in the home that
5:46
Michael and I live in right uh now my
5:50
studio kitchen is about a mile from the
5:52
house that was uh the first house that
5:56
Michael and I built that we thought we'd
5:57
live there forever and ever and ever
6:00
and uh we started filming Paula's best
6:05
dishes there and we woke up one day and
6:08
realized as we were walking under lights
6:12
and stepping over uh cameras and bags
6:17
that the house had become a studio it
6:19
was not our home anymore so we went down
6:21
the road and built another house and
6:25
uh so I have two different kitchens that
6:28
I can film in yeah but I love love love
6:32
uh filming in the kitchen that I
6:35
actually cook and live in every day so
6:37
you are uh you're going to be um cooking
6:40
here in this kitchen in your new kitchen
6:43
in your old home or the new kitchen in
6:45
the old kitchen in the new home we do
6:47
have a clip we can look at and see what
6:49
some of this looks like good good cuz
6:50
we're having a good time yes y'all enjoy
6:54
[Music]
7:19
[Music]
7:29
well hey
7:31
[Music]
7:33
friends are you up to frying some
7:36
chicken with me everybody loves fried
7:39
chicken I think it's time to see if my
7:41
lips fit this leg it's so good cavity
7:46
toy cavity to Cav hush Bobby well I
7:51
browned my meat and then I drained it
7:54
wrong stop right there is what you said
7:58
has anybody ever told you you have a
7:59
Southern accent I'm more Southern than
8:02
y'all I have a susha her name is Pauline
8:06
not a lot of people can say that
8:11
right stopped here to get a sausage dog
8:14
and you've eaten
8:17
two how do you like my facial I tell you
8:20
what it's only my second facial in the
8:21
world I don't have any makeup on now I
8:23
would give anything if y'all could be
8:25
here with me I'm sorry guys
8:31
I need a
8:32
moment I'm in my kitchen and you know
8:35
what you never know who you going to
8:38
find hey y'all welcome to my kitchen
8:41
today there's some things that you taste
8:43
that'll almost make you
8:46
weak because the memories that flood by
8:50
can you know they're all good
8:53
memories thanks for getting these
8:55
shrimps oh gosh thanks for cooking them
8:57
in the last month somebody mentioned
8:59
that to me oh every time I go I have to
9:02
bring your mama's pudding the one with
9:03
the cookies on the top and as
9:05
enthusiastic as they are about it I'm a
9:08
little eh it's not really my thing I'd
9:10
rather eat pork chops thank you I think
9:12
that it's just a
9:14
um it's one of those things where my
9:17
mama makes better Fried Chicken than
9:18
your mama no she doesn't my mama makes
9:20
better Fried Chicken than
9:23
yours but I think I have a legitimate
9:26
claim and all these years later
9:31
it still reminds
9:33
[Music]
9:34
me of the way I showed my love for might
9:38
not buy them the newest toy but I could
9:41
fry them some
9:42
[Music]
9:46
chicken yum yum yum
9:50
[Music]
10:00
so so you that that looks wonderful that
10:02
looks like it's a lot of fun yeah it is
10:04
it's a lot of fun so anyway I've done uh
10:08
a lot of shows sometimes by myself
10:10
sometimes with others uh one of my
10:13
favorites was with Claudia my my little
10:16
Latino daughter-in-law who is so cute
10:18
and the language barrier is uh sometimes
10:22
really gets me tickled but get this she
10:26
did all the cooking right I want to see
10:28
what she could do she is um Cloud eats
10:32
and Bobby eat very very clean right very
10:36
clean and uh cloud is now a vegetarian I
10:42
didn't know that yes she has she has
10:44
turned into a vegetarian all right and
10:46
uh it wouldn't surprise me if one day
10:48
she doesn't wind up vegan because she
10:52
everything she prepared was vegan okay
10:55
and I ate it
10:57
y'all the whole thing yes and it was
11:00
good yeah it was really good like vegan
11:03
isn't bad I just couldn't do it every
11:05
day no no I couldn't do it every day
11:07
either no but hey but what she made was
11:10
really good oh gosh one of the one of
11:12
the shows I did with um an actor named
11:18
uh Tom Beringer his name sounds like
11:20
fine wine in fact I told him that
11:22
doesn't that sound like a good Tom
11:25
baringer uh he has um done very well in
11:30
his field he has been in uh like platoon
11:35
right and then he played in oh what's
11:38
that wonderful old movie one of those
11:41
that's retro The Big Chill The Big Chill
11:45
don't laugh at me but I just saw The Big
11:48
Chill for the first time this summer you
11:51
are kidding the first time ever my wife
11:53
had been telling me since we got married
11:55
19 years ago you got to see The Big
11:57
Chill and we just sat she just finally
12:00
pinned me down to watch it well Tom Tom
12:02
was real interesting we called it our
12:04
Emmy award-winning show he brought his
12:06
Emy so I pull my Emy out of the nice out
12:09
of the uh theater room em Envy yeah yeah
12:14
yeah and I said well he deserved his a
12:16
lot more than I deserved he had worked
12:18
very very hard for his Emy but what a
12:21
nice guy and he brought his wife right
12:23
so you know I I just felt like I made
12:25
new friends M but uh I'm looking forward
12:28
to having more and more people you know
12:31
like regular people like everyday people
12:35
right um I love getting in the kitchen
12:38
with women that only cook at home right
12:41
sure of course and bring their ideas to
12:44
uh to the table yeah yes you know you
12:46
could do all kinds of fancy food or the
12:47
recipes that you've done for years but
12:50
at the end of the day some of those
12:51
things aren't your average Tuesday night
12:52
meals some of them aren but some of them
12:55
aren't it be it' be interesting to learn
12:57
about what people do during the week I'm
12:59
turn the table and ask you did you ever
13:01
see Julie and Julia I think that was uh
13:05
yeah that was that was a few years ago
13:08
it was and it was I I so enjoyed
13:12
watching um Merl Street that's right yes
13:16
uh she is so good but you know I always
13:20
wanted to meet Julia Child always but I
13:24
didn't get to MH I never got to meet her
13:28
and um did you did you ever at any point
13:31
when you first got going with with the
13:34
bag lady um and everything that you were
13:37
doing early on before TV came along did
13:40
you ever think I'd like to be like her
13:43
no no not really uh the person that I
13:46
wanted to be like was my
13:48
grandmother who was so accomplished in
13:51
the
13:51
kitchen
13:53
um and another Local Hero for me was
13:56
Miss wils mhm did you ever meet her oh
13:59
gosh yes in fact when they would close
14:02
down you know they close the whole month
14:03
of January and miss wils and her family
14:06
would come into our restaurant and eat
14:08
that's fun and it always thrill me to
14:10
death when I'd see Miss wils walk in the
14:12
lines for that place I drive by him
14:14
regularly they are they're around the
14:16
block sometimes but it's a it's a good
14:18
time it's Unique you know it well it
14:20
just goes to show that that Mother's
14:23
cooking and grandmother's cooking will
14:25
never go out of style no it'll be in
14:28
demand till the day we all die mhm so
14:32
this uh this television show positively
14:34
Paula sounds like it's going to be a
14:35
very big deal I'm so excited I don't
14:38
care where I go Jesse people come up to
14:41
me and they say Paula please please get
14:45
back on TV I miss you so badly yeah and
14:49
you know it's just so sweet some of the
14:51
things they whisper in my ear so I hope
14:53
everybody is as ex excited as I am about
14:59
being back in front of them absolutely
15:02
and that's supposed to happen October
15:03
the 15th y'all yeah so get cranked up
15:07
and um you can find um hopefully it'll
15:10
be in your viewing area if not you know
15:13
you can I guess you could call your your
15:16
local TV stations and inquire like back
15:20
in the day I Want My MTV I want I want
15:22
my PA that just dated me but um anyone
15:25
who wants more information can find it
15:27
positively paula. TV right you can go
15:31
right you can go to that website very
15:33
good positively paula.tv now the
15:36
episode's going to be online at all uh
15:39
you know I don't I don't know about that
15:41
I don't know about that okay we'll start
15:43
with TV for now it's always good to
15:45
spend 30 minutes with Paula and see what
15:47
she's whipping up pinto beans or vegan
15:49
vegan sausages or whatever it is at Jo
15:52
yeah and I had so much fun you know
15:55
duplicate one of Julia's meals yeah very
15:58
good uh yeah what' you make uh it was
16:02
some type of chicken it was a chicken
16:04
dish cocoa vanan there you go there you
16:07
go so you used wine and it was good yes
16:10
did you put any in the food
16:12
uh oh yeah you know I'm not a wine
16:15
drinker so it all went in the food y'all
16:17
there you go very good but it it was fun
16:20
just doing a a show Strictly in in
16:23
memory of her and the doors that she
16:27
opened for the rest of us very good she
16:29
really paved the way she uh and I know
16:32
how you feel because I know a lot of
16:34
people feel that way about you really
16:37
what you've done absolutely absolutely
16:39
JY that's such a sweet thing I I I come
16:42
across people uh all the time who know
16:45
that we're friends and hey you know I I
16:48
needed some advice and you think I could
16:50
talk to Paula and and they absolutely
16:52
look at you as someone you know
16:53
everybody knows your story and how
16:55
incredible it is but you know there's a
16:57
path that's made a little bit clearer
16:59
because of what you did over the last
17:01
what 20 years with your boys so yeah
17:03
that's something to be proud of well
17:05
thank you Jesse that's so kind you know
17:08
one of my one of my biggest goals was um
17:12
to always be there to encourage women
17:16
and men but being a woman I know some of
17:19
the positions that women can find
17:21
themselves in and I've always wanted to
17:23
be there to be an encourager and a
17:26
cheerleader uh for those women you know
17:28
don't give up on your dreams don't don't
17:31
let anybody get in your face and tell
17:34
you no I will take this opportunity to
17:37
tell you something you told me one one
17:39
time we were visiting I've been doing my
17:41
TV show now for 5 years here in s and
17:43
that's wonderful congratulations but you
17:46
uh you mentioned to me a long time ago
17:47
that you were um I don't know if
17:49
struggling is the right word but you
17:51
were you know really working hard for 12
17:55
years before your life changed yes I
17:57
struggled yeah for 12 years it was a
17:59
struggle and and it's easy to say well
18:02
those 12 years were very difficult in
18:05
one sentence but 12 years is what 25% of
18:10
of your lifetime I don't do math but
18:12
that's a long time and so it was it it
18:15
was it was a struggle it was a struggle
18:18
but uh you know I think if you're
18:20
focused and you keep your eye on the
18:23
prize and at the end of the day I
18:25
believe you were enjoying it because if
18:27
you if you were you'd have had some kind
18:29
of I need to I need to go through
18:31
something I couldn't have
18:33
withstood 16-hour days every day had I
18:36
not been in love with what I was doing
18:39
very good long as you're having fun and
18:41
love what you do absolutely absolutely I
18:45
I it it beats working for a living right
18:48
yes yeah so positively paula.tv is where
18:51
we can find more information about
18:53
October the 15th y'all positively Paula
18:55
and Paula's going to be back on party at
18:58
my house invite all my friends over to I
19:01
hope I get an invite can we get me an
19:03
invite yes my doors are always open you
19:05
honey you know better than that I know I
19:07
know um very good so we'll we'll I guess
19:10
it's my line that I write in the paper
19:13
uh at the end of my columns every week
19:14
in the Savannah Morning News I write see
19:17
you on TV Jesse but now I guess that
19:19
applies to you see you on TV Paula right
