again we're still in the same
0:07
clothes but we are not quitters are we
0:10
son never we are not quitters we're
0:12
going to be trying to answer questions
0:14
today send in by some of our friends out
0:18
there
0:19
uh sometimes it's very hard during the
0:22
middle of the day to to get folks
0:24
because uh most people are very very
0:27
busy but we're going to try again to
0:30
today mhm to see if we can answer some
0:33
of these questions who is our first call
0:35
it's a good thing we have email so if
0:38
we're not able to get through them we
0:39
still have the the the question but I
0:41
can still try to answer the question and
0:43
hopefully they'll catch the podcast of
0:45
course our first question is from Pam
0:48
okay we'll see if Pam answers okay come
0:50
on Pam I'm counting on you girl you want
0:55
to place a bat Bobby uh sure I'll bet
0:58
you $100 she don't answer
1:00
well that was my
1:02
bed let's just give each other $100 okay
1:06
sorry bye oh gosh I almost thought she
1:10
was answerone please record your message
1:12
when you finished recording you may hang
1:14
up or press one for more
1:16
options hey Pam it's Paula Dean from
1:20
what's cooking with Paula Dean and I'm
1:22
here with my son Bobby and Today's Show
1:25
is um we're on a quest to answer
1:28
questions from our friends out there our
1:31
listeners so I'm so sorry that you
1:33
weren't there to take the call but uh
1:36
just watch for this podcast because
1:39
we're going to try to answer the
1:40
question anyway have a blessed day girl
1:46
byebye here's Pam's question mom is she
1:50
by she she means you I'm sure is she
1:52
ever planning to do a program of awesome
1:55
recipes in the reduced calorie version
1:59
of her original recipe oh that was your
2:02
show is she planning that that was that
2:07
Pam that was Bobby show uh not my mama's
2:10
meals sure was still is and it's still
2:14
running I think oh my gosh good show
2:18
Bobby Bobby has a cookbook out and I do
2:21
too I have uh poine cuts the fat is my
2:25
newest cookbook and uh it's
2:30
it's 250 brand new recipes Pam and 50 of
2:35
my old classics that I have cut the the
2:38
fat and the calories on and Bobby also
2:42
has a cookbook what is the name a couple
2:44
of them got a couple of I know it but
2:45
the one that every from Mama's table to
2:47
mine went to number one on the New York
2:49
Times best sell list in its category yes
2:51
that's wonderful congratulations thank
2:53
you and then Bobby Deans every day eats
2:55
both are both are great books uhhuh but
2:58
one of one of your books uh like each
3:01
each meal was under
3:03
350 350 calories or less and you could
3:07
prepare every recipe in 30 minutes 30 to
3:09
45 minutes uhhuh all right now which
3:10
cookbook is that the first one from
3:13
Mama's table to mine cookbook was
3:16
tremendous it did so well because it's
3:18
relevant a lot of people like Pam have
3:20
this very same question the the reason
3:23
uh Pam that I wrote the book is because
3:25
I love my mom's food I love fried
3:28
chicken and collard greens and sweet
3:30
potato sule and just all the you know uh
3:34
favorites classic favorite recipes and
3:36
um it's very very Elementary idea to
3:40
decide to take those original recipes
3:42
and just pair them down and try to come
3:43
up with a with a with a lighter version
3:45
of it and it was really um simple to do
3:48
that all I did was uh looked at the
3:51
original recipes because my mom always
3:54
told me from an early age to go exactly
3:56
by the recipe the first time you're
3:58
doing uh anything and then after that
4:02
you can make it your own and do whatever
4:03
you'd like to it so I always felt like I
4:05
had creative license to do because
4:07
people asked me they were like don't you
4:09
feel bad doing that to your uh Mama's
4:11
recipes and really I didn't because you
4:13
gave me permission early on to do it of
4:15
course but all you really have to do Pam
4:17
is take a recipe that you really like uh
4:21
and look inside that recipe at the
4:23
culprits and and and either replace them
4:26
entirely or cut them out if you can or
4:29
just you can really um cut out a lot of
4:32
unnecessary fat and calories just by
4:34
reducing the amounts of things in a
4:36
recipe for instance if a recipe calls
4:39
for uh sour cream you could use Greek
4:42
yogurt to substitute or you could use um
4:47
uh vegetables rather than um breading in
4:52
some instances or you can cut back on
4:53
the cheese and a macaroni cheese for
4:55
instance by by filling it with with
4:57
ground cauliflower there's a lot of
4:59
little yeah Absol absolutely um lot of
5:02
little tips and tricks that you can use
5:04
to uh to dial back on the fat and
5:06
calories and recipe so the answer to the
5:08
question is yes she did do it she came
5:11
out with a cookbook called poine cuts to
5:13
fat and that's got a lot of great 250
5:15
recipes in fact uh of great scaleb
5:18
recipes or you could go to uh from
5:20
Mama's table to mine that book is solid
5:23
honest recipes that work that's great
5:25
and under 350 calories
5:30
recipe yeah or less so uh that that and
5:34
it was that was very well received yeah
5:37
well Pam I'm so sorry we missed you but
5:39
we hope that uh you happen to catch this
5:42

5:43
question so we'll go to uh a little

8:13

8:15
Saturdays you can catch us okay great
8:18
Ken Ken's question Karen's question is
8:20
Paula my husband is also
8:23
diabetic and I'm interested in knowing
8:25
how you were able to change your eating
8:28
habits um
8:31
well Karen I'm I'm sorry to hear I I I
8:34
know nothing I know I don't know his age
8:36
or anything but uh the older you get the
8:41
more likely this is to happen to you and
8:43
you know you can't do the same things at
8:46
45 or 55 that you did when you were 25
8:51
it just doesn't work that way uh I don't
8:54
know if he's type one or type two I
8:56
really don't don't know any of those
8:59
things
9:00
but you know most people don't like
9:02
change we don't like change and it's
9:06
hard um when I first said okay I had to
9:10
accept the fact that I was diabetic and
9:14
that took me about a year and a half I
9:17
think I went for three six months visits
9:20
before I had to look at the doctor and
9:22
say
9:24
okay I am type 2
9:27
diabetic because said it couldn't be
9:30
nobody else in our family had it and uh
9:33
but I have since found out that uh after
9:36
learning more about this uh it's not not
9:41
all genetic you know uh
9:44
stress uh and certainly genetics but
9:47
your lifestyle the way you eat the way
9:50
you
9:50
play uh the amount of stress you're
9:53
under all those play in to whether
9:56
you're going to be a candidate for type
9:58
two diet diabetes but age is probably
10:01
one of the biggest
10:03
factors uh if you're lucky enough to
10:05
live long enough there's going to be
10:07
something high on you whether it be your
10:09
blood your blood pressure your
10:11
cholesterol your triglyceride
10:13
something's going to get high uh more
10:16
than likely but it it was very very hard
10:20
and after I got that initial 35 lbs off
10:24
then I decided that I was going to bring
10:27
everything back in my kitchen but I was
10:29
going to practice moderation I think
10:33
moderation is so important I was uh
10:37
hellbent that I was going to cut down on
10:39
the portions that I ate because I wanted
10:43
to maintain that weight loss you know I
10:45
said anybody can lose 50 pounds
10:50
anybody anybody if they have it to lose
10:53
they can lose it but it takes a heck of
10:56
a strong person to keep it all
11:00
because it's it's really is a lifestyle
11:04
change
11:05
um so I have done that through my air
11:11
fryer having enjoying fried foods
11:14
without the
11:15
frying uh I have certainly lowered my
11:19
portions on the amount that I eat now
11:22
and uh so it's it's an ongoing process
11:27
one that you have to work out all the
11:29
time and I hope Karen that maybe you and
11:31
I can talk one onone and uh maybe uh
11:37
knowing the
11:38
specifics uh we can talk a little bit
11:40
better sorry I missed you girl well
11:43
you're leaving one out that I'm really
11:45
proud of before what you really only had
11:47
one Vice sweet tea well no I had many
11:52
more vices son but you know what I mean
11:54
southern people love their sweet tea we
11:57
love our sweet tea
11:59
and from uh 12:00 or 11:00 on I kept a
12:04
glass of sweet tea in my hands and I no
12:07
longer do that I drink unsweetened tea
12:10
now uh but you'd be amazed at uh the
12:15
calories that are located in our liquids
12:18
that I love you're downplaying it that's
12:20
huge that you gave up sweet tea That's
12:22
enormous well it was it was hard
12:24
Southern sweet tea is loaded with white
12:26
sugar oh and that's the that is the
12:28
culprit if you look at if you start
12:31
paying attention to what's in the foods
12:32
that you buy processed foods anything
12:34
that you can see the ingredients on if
12:36
you look at directly at the sugars and
12:38
the diabetics have to look have to pay
12:40
close attention to those items that
12:41
they're buying a good way to eat
12:43
healthier for a diabetic when we were
12:46
doing when you were first diagnosed with
12:48
type two diabetes I really began to pay
12:51
a lot of attention to how you get type
12:54
two diabetes and what you should do
12:55
about it and people with diabetes
12:57
particularly type two are really bummed
12:59
out because they do have to make a
13:00
change because lot a lot of that is
13:03
brought on by the foods that you eat and
13:05
the things that you drink and yes
13:07
something that you can do is shop around
13:08
the edges of the grocery store if you
13:10
can eat more exactly can eat more real
13:13
food more whole uh Foods more fruits and
13:17
vegetables and Grains and nuts and
13:19
things like that and cut back on the
13:21
processed foods and the sugars it is
13:23
really not that hard a change to make
13:26
and it is uh but it's things like people
13:29
aren't aware of how many calories
13:30
they're drinking so if you enjoy a
13:33
cocktail if you enjoy a cocktail or if
13:35
you like beer you might not be aware of
13:38
how many calories and how much sugar
13:39
that you're taking in through that so um
13:42
you can drink more water if you're a
13:44
southern person like Mom and you really
13:45
like sweet tea if you can go to change
13:47
to unsweetened tea instead uh and use a
13:51
liquid Stevia for instance or or a sugar
13:54
in the raw or something like that that's
13:55
a great way to make and don't try to eat
13:57
the whole enchilada once make small
14:00
changes be proud of yourself and
14:02
congratulate yourself for the changes
14:03
that you do make because your doctor
14:05
will be real happy that you made any
14:07
changes at all and once you feel some
14:09
progress like you did start drinking
14:11
more water rather than sodas or rather
14:13
than sweet tea start taking a walk
14:15
during the day and eventually you're
14:17
walking maybe a mile every afternoon you
14:19
will feel so much better and with each
14:22
of those small progresses that you make
14:24
you'll want to make more so keep up the
14:27
good work don't get discouraged and and
14:29
make those small changes in your life
14:30
and you'll feel better and the people in
14:32
your family and the people that love you
14:33
and care about you will be super proud
14:35
of you and do I tell you that from
14:37
experience you I I'll tell you uh I am
14:41
addicted to diet sodas and my doctor
14:44
informed me last time I went in to visit
14:47
and I've got one more thing to say to
14:49
you Karen about that doctor but she said
14:53
diet
14:57
sodas um d diet sodas increase your
15:01
chances of becoming a type 2 diabetic M
15:06
and that sounded so weird to me it's
15:08
fake sugar it tricks your body sugar
15:10
yeah here's the most important thing
15:12
Karen is that your husband go to the
15:15
doctor on a regular basis and because
15:18
each of us are different and it's
15:20
important that
15:22
uh that he visit with the doctor and
15:25
keep up and does as the doctor says cuz
15:28
like I said of us are different what
15:30
worked for me might not work for him and
15:33
vice versa so anyway good luck and uh
15:37
you can do it just keep trying you can
15:39
do it well Bobby well Mama we didn't
15:43
have too much luck again today well I
15:46
think we call I think we ought to come
15:48
in and do a podcast at night when folks
15:51
are home don't y'all yeah that makes
15:53
more sense doesn't it we tried y'all
15:56
thanks for your questions and oh we'll
15:59
see y'all next
