hey y'all welcome to what's cooking with
0:02
Paula deine well I'll tell you what's
0:04
cooking with Paula deine we're probably
0:08
much Alik and in the same boat we all
0:11
feel like we're cooking the heat is
0:14
incredible isn't it Michael Michael's my
0:17
guest today
0:19
hey' he's here with me to uh tell y'all
0:23
about our last weekend that we spent in
0:26
Key West we were down there for the
0:28
Hemingway lookalike
0:30
contest uh Hemingway's birthday was in
0:34
July one of the hottest months in the
0:36
year and uh so you have to celebrate his
0:42
birthday in Key West so that's why the
0:45
lookalike contest was held in July in
0:49
Key West it was so terribly hot wasn't
0:51
it Michael it it you know it was but it
0:53
was hotter here so well it it doesn't it
0:57
didn't feel hotter here I gu yes because
1:00
in Key West you spend so much time out
1:02
of doors we here we run from the car to
1:05
the house or whatever but uh it just
1:09
felt so incredibly hot and let me tell
1:12
y'all about this you know uh him andway
1:16
had a lot of different looks well one of
1:19
his looks is in that wool turtleneck
1:22
sweater well my husband decided this
1:25
year that that's was going to be his
1:28
look that he was going to wear that wool
1:31
sweater well he did how much weight you
1:34
think you lost oh I don't think I lost
1:36
any um I'd say you sweated some off I
1:39
sweated some but uh the last four or
1:43
five winners have won with the wool
1:44
sweat on so that's definitely they look
1:46
they're looking for yeah so I I put it
1:49
on for but um believe believe it or not
1:52
I I carried it with me and a a bag and
1:54
then uh just before the I slipped it on
1:57
just before the contest some of the guys
1:59
wore
2:00
there David the my buddy that won David
2:04
he wore um he actually walked there with
2:07
his sweater on that sweater on so um
2:10
they really test your uh endurance and
2:13
your dedication don't they I think
2:15
that's a that's a the key they they
2:16
think you're dedicated by putting that
2:18
silly sweater on in July well I came in
2:23
the top five again this year Michael was
2:25
in the top five again last year I was
2:28
and this year so I'm Happ happy with
2:30
that and like I said my one of my good
2:31
buddies uh Dave Dave Hemingway or real
2:35
Hemingway his real name is is one the
2:37
Conway the first year I was there um we
2:40
go in alphabetical order my name's uh
2:43
groover his name's Hemingway and uh I
2:46
looked behind him and I said uh behind
2:48
me I said what's your name he said Dave
2:50
Hemingway I said that's not
2:54
fair but there's no relation you could
2:57
have said your M your name was Michael
2:58
Hemingway almost asked him if he'd adopt
3:01
me and then that way I could change my
3:03
name well you know it hadn't it really
3:06
the name hadn't helped David over the
3:08
years because you've been doing it six
3:10
years and he had been doing it seven
3:13
right right right right so it's got It's
3:15
a little bit political they want to see
3:17
that you're in it for the for the long
3:20
haul that you will work to support their
3:23
uh Foundation right as um all the
3:26
proceeds go to a scholarship fund that's
3:28
what we raise money for yes a
3:30
scholarship fund for Key West Community
3:32
College and it goes to literary students
3:35
and um nursing and nursing students uhuh
3:39
yeah so it's a it's a good it's a good
3:41
foundation it's a great idea I don't
3:42
know who came up with a nursing thing
3:44
but uh relatively speaking I'm I'm one
3:47
of the younger guys so believe it or not
3:50
so might be a good idea it might be a
3:53
good idea to get buddies with all the
3:55
nurses down
3:56
there cuz some of us going to need it
3:59
yeah the the Papas all the living Papas
4:03
once you once you win the title uh you
4:07
no longer enter the pageant again you
4:09
become a papa and you become a judge
4:12
contest not a pageant did I say
4:16
pageant
4:18
okay I didn't realize what's the
4:21
difference well one's like a beauty pal
4:23
pageant you wear well a beauty contest
4:27
well beauty pageant okay we'll have to
4:30
check what the difference is look up on
4:33
your iPhone I just feel better with
4:36
contest well just look up on that iPhone
4:39
because you constantly asking your phone
4:41
all kind of silly questions I know so
4:43
let's see what the difference is so okay
4:46
I'll try to stick to the word contest
4:48
instead of beauty
4:52
page oh now you you got me off track I
4:56
can't remember what I was
4:57
saying what was I saying
5:05
hold okay well let's just take a quick
5:08
break then while I try to think of what
5:10
Michael the thought that Michael
5:13
interrupted the space that you live in
5:16
really affects the way you feel so my

6:02
659
6:03
3300 that's 1 800 659
6:09
3300 so welcome back y'all we're just
6:13
reminiscing about this weekend uh in Key
6:16
West when we attended the Ernest
6:18
Hemingway lookalike pageant I mean
6:23
contest so uh you know there's one part
6:27
of the weekend that I always look so
6:30
forward to
6:32
Michael because I know that you're going
6:34
to win that there's not a shadow of a
6:37
doubt in my mind and I could sit and
6:41
watch you do it all day long and never
6:45
get tired of watching and that's the arm
6:48
wrestling arm wrestling I feel sorry for
6:50
whoever sits across from you because
6:53
they are
6:55
loser oh you know you are the you are
6:57
the strongest man I think I've ever met
7:00
one one day I went down there and I um
7:02
the worst thing you can do with arm ass
7:04
is be overconfident yeah and think you
7:06
could you're unbeatable because I I did
7:09
that and I just sat there I was kind of
7:11
LAX days AG going just just kind of a I
7:14
remember you playing that guy you go and
7:17
then I'll pick up the pieces so uhhuh
7:21
so I messed around and the guy guy got
7:24
me down the guy beat me which I know he
7:26
couldn't do it again that first year no
7:28
he couldn't do it but uh and I think you
7:31
being very courteous and well I was
7:35
aware that you were a newcomer I was
7:37
just using my arm and uh he jumped in
7:40
there with his and kind of pushed with
7:42
his body because so I was doing the the
7:45
kind of the gentleman rules which yeah I
7:47
don't think that's uh I don't think you
7:49
should do that no unless you want to be
7:53
lose that's right oh well you you took
7:58
down that that man that um really took a
8:02
lot of lot of nerve on his part he's a
8:04
good guy he he he was a good guy he was
8:07
a good guy so I thought he was a good
8:10
sport to arm wrestle with you uh and and
8:14
you were very respectful of him you let
8:17
him hang in there for a few seconds l a
8:22
um every year we is held at Sloppy Joe's
8:26
in uh in Key West and uh it's it's a
8:30
neat contest you meet people that you
8:31
would never cross PA pass with um yeah
8:34
we've met some interesting people
8:36
they're really um really some neat
8:38
people in friends uh and of course I
8:40
think that they think that you're old
8:42
and Michael just celebrated his 60th
8:44
birthday yeah uh in December so I'm the
8:49
I'm the punk in the group I know I know
8:52
what is one one guy the uh
8:55
Matt um he's he's a lot younger Matt
8:59
no not M oh oh oh the other Matt yes
9:03
there is one guy that comes in his name
9:05
is Matt and he looks just like Ernest
9:09
Hemingway when he was that age when when
9:12
Hemingway was that age uh he always
9:15
brings up a a picture of Hemingway at
9:19
the age that Matt is now and you can't
9:22
tell the difference I had to ask one of
9:25
The Mamas this past weekend I said now
9:27
was that a picture of Matt was that a
9:30
picture of himself he was holding or was
9:32
it a picture of himing way she said no
9:34
it was a picture of himing way right you
9:37
could not tell the difference yeah he's
9:39
he's he's good yeah so I'm hoping the
9:41
judges will
9:43
um will start considering different age
9:47
look alikes uh because so many of the
9:51
Papas are are getting on up in age and I
9:54
just think you know it would just really
9:57
be beneficial if they would start
10:00
uh really looking hard at some younger
10:04
men well I hope so too after I get in oh
10:07
well you're still young you just people
10:09
may not think you are because you're
10:12
you're totally white I tell everybody I
10:15
tell people I actually dye my beard to
10:17
match
10:19
paulus my
10:21
hair I don't have a beard I pluck mine
10:25
out so there tell them about your your
10:30
mustache wax you I am why are you w to
10:34
bring that up because it was so funny it
10:36
was such a funny story well why don't
10:38
you tell it then we were I didn't think
10:41
it was so funny I was in much distress
10:43
girls we were going to um New York we we
10:47
hadn't been seeing each other very long
10:49
so we were dating and uh Paulo's uh
10:53
Paulo was plucking hairs off my nose and
10:57
we were in the airplane and the light
10:59
shining just right and I said oh you got
11:02
a few hairs right here that not supposed
11:04
to be there so get them so I said
11:07
um I said Paul I have more hair than
11:09
most mammals so don't worry about the
11:12
couple on my nose I'll be all right and
11:15
uh so she kept doing it kept doing it I
11:17
said so the light was shining on her on
11:20
me just right and it was just it was
11:22
just she's got a real light you can't
11:25
even tell really but I said he's worried
11:27
so much about M plucking my hair how
11:29
about that mustache you got oh oh my God
11:32
uh you thought
11:34
i' it was unbelievable I was reac so
11:38
distressed so when we got to New York
11:40
she got the the driver to stop at um at
11:44
the CVS so I walked in with her and she
11:47
said what are you doing here actually
11:48
stopped at a
11:49
Walgreens whatever whatever so I walked
11:53
in she said what are you doing in it
11:54
Walgreens is my favorite so I said I'm a
11:59
just just walked in see what you were
12:01
doing she says yeah okay so she took off
12:04
and so I figured she had something
12:06
personal to do so I just left her alone
12:10
we got to the um when we got to the room
12:12
she she had bought some mustache
12:16
wax so she put this on her she put this
12:19
on her lip and uh ripped the ripped a
12:22
little bit of hair she had I thought
12:25
that just mortified me that you said
12:27
something like that I didn't know you
12:28
well you didn't realize I was joking to
12:31
talk about my
12:33
mustache you didn't realize I was joking
12:35
now it wouldn't bother me a bit but I
12:37
was just I was so
12:40
embarrassed and so um it didn't get you
12:43
to quit plugging my hair for for five
12:46
minutes for a day maybe I can't stand
12:50
those hairs it stick out on your nose
12:52
like that I can't stand it but sometimes
12:55
I I've been driving in New York and Paul
12:57
says let me get that hair
12:59
so she puts her hand right here I said
13:02
Paul I'm now driving and looking through
13:05
those eyes that you're covering up well
13:07
y'all Michael and I definitely solved a
13:09
lot of problems
13:11
today I hope you and your partner have
13:14
better luck than we did uh I appreciate
13:16
you coming in and and sharing you know
13:19
if you're uh ever in a position where
13:22
you can get to Key West around July the
13:24
20th July 20th um you can go to uh
13:28
sloppy Joe's website and it'll tell you
13:30
when the contest is yeah come down and
13:33
join in the fun come down you can be
13:34
part of my fan club um cuz the louder
13:38
you holler the better it is I can't I
13:40
can't wait for y'all to see some of the
13:42
pictures Michael had this giant head
13:45
made y'all I know it's from here to the
13:48
ground and uh of just his head and he
13:51
had two of those made and our friends uh
13:54
in the audience were holding those up
13:57
plus I had some glasses they were um
13:59
they were in Key West you can't give
14:01
somebody a hat and say here put this on
14:03
because it's 100 degrees nobody's going
14:05
to wear a hat but I so I have these
14:07
glasses and has a little um has a
14:10
captain's hat it looks like just a front
14:13
of the captain Hat Wear Captain turn to
14:15
the side it's just um so it's wide open
14:18
it's really a cool hat so I gave them
14:20
out I kind of screwed up though I gave
14:22
them out early and then people said oh I
14:24
got a souvenir and they'd go wander off
14:27
put put them in the suitcase take home
14:29
so but if y'all if y'all ever available
14:32
around that time of year come down it's
14:34
it's it's a fun place and there good
14:37
chance you might make friends that
14:38
you'll keep the rest of your life oh
14:40
that's right so thank you for coming in
14:42
and uh reminiscing about this weekend's
14:49
pageant best dishes and love y'all till
