0:10
man Stan the candy man well I am so
0:14
happy to tell all my friends out there
0:17
and introduce all my friends to Stan the
0:20
Candyman uh Stan strickling is is a
0:23
wonderful friend of mine and he makes
0:26
all those goodies all those wonderful
0:28
sweets for me that I sell on evine that
0:31
I bring to y'all and and Ste your cake
0:34
recipes yes yes and he makes my cakes
0:37
for me and uh I just thank you so much
0:41
and I'm so happy that everybody's G to
0:42
be able to put a face with a name stand
0:46
the man well I'm glad you invited me
0:48
today Paula I was talking earlier before
0:51
you got here because you were late you
0:53
were late as usual I was late y'all just
0:57
kidding Paul I was talking earlier why I
1:00
think Savannah has done so well was had
1:03
to do with you I said it was the book
1:04
first and then it was Paula because I
1:06
remember when your restaurant was down
1:08
close to my second store which we now
1:10
have 17 when we were down in our second
1:13
store and you moved a block away it hurt
1:15
our business by 10% so I knew it was
1:18
important to have you in Savannah oh my
1:20
go so and now we've been able to spread
1:22
that throughout the country by TV and
1:25
media it's been good for us oh well
1:27
staying I he has been so successful he
1:32
was like me y'all he um he didn't go to
1:35
work until he was how old I think I got
1:38
it all together about 50 actually I work
1:41
started working hard at 45 but I've been
1:43
doing a candy business since 78 so
1:46
however however many years ago that is
1:48
it's been about 40 years almost 40 years
1:50
we've been making candy wow well stay
1:53
and his company makes the best preing
1:55
y'all and and Gophers that's Michael's
1:58
favorite is the Gophers yeah you know we
2:00
may change the name of that thing to
2:01
Loggerhead too now because we're giving
2:04
money here off state of off of Georgia
2:07
and off the coast of Florida you know
2:08
loggerhead is a big deal so we're we're
2:10
going to be changing that name from a
2:12
gopher to a loggerhead and we're going
2:14
to donate money from that item for every
2:16
pound we sell that's great because all
2:18
all of our big beautiful Turtles they're
2:22
they're probably endangered aren't they
2:23
they are endangered and there's a big
2:25
study on them here so we think it's a
2:26
good mix good yes well out of how how
2:30
many eggs does a turtle lay oh Lord this
2:33
it's a load Bunch 50 60 it's a lot and
2:36
how many of those eggs survive I think
2:38
they say 5% or something it's very small
2:41
yeah maybe a couple of those eggs Will
2:44
Survive we hope I not get eaten so
2:47
that's that's Wonder we want all of ours
2:49
to be eaten Lo all your locker heads the
2:53
one with caramel and PE right well I
2:56
tell you what uh I don't know which you
2:59
could probably tell me uh which product
3:03
people enjoy the most well you start you
3:05
said it in the beginning oh oh evine or
3:08
evine there's a tossup I think between
3:11
something pretty new you doing is the
3:13
pan log roll or pcan log roll listen
3:16
those pean logs you know as a kid stand
3:20
I would start screaming there's a stues
3:22
there's a stues you know cuz you had to
3:26
get that pecan log and they're so good
3:28
and I SLI them and I put them in
3:30
brownies or my gooey buttercake
3:33
mixes oh my glad to hear that they are
3:37
that item's really done well here lately
3:39
and it's a new item for you and also the
3:42
coconut cake which you've done well with
3:44
for years yes everybody still like that
3:46
cake yes yes and then we got the the
3:49
dreamsicle cake it reminds me of that
3:51
dreamsicle that we ate as children that
3:54
with the orange Sher and the vanilla ice
3:56
cream and then the strawberry cake they
3:58
love STW strawberry cake and that's a
4:01
good time of year for that you know
4:02
sometimes it makes me think of that yeah
4:04
yeah and they're so pretty and uh one
4:07
time you did for me three of the loaf
4:11
cakes and I thought that was a fabulous
4:14
idea we did two two different way we did
4:16
a spring loaf cake that had some spring
4:18
items in then we did a regular layer
4:20
cake Trio which was our main stay the
4:23
praline cake right now we need to call
4:26
it a loggerhead cake but it was called a
4:29
turtle cake yeah but those are the items
4:31
we make but you called our number one
4:33
item in the very beginning when you said
4:34
prings we can now say that we sell more
4:36
prings than anybody in the country to
4:38
include New Orleans we have left them
4:41
they say Prine we say praline but we
4:43
have left them in the dust well I nobody
4:46
can touch your pre leans thank you
4:48
nobody and you know I can make a pretty
4:51
good pre lean at home but i' so much
4:53
rather have yours well you're the only
4:55
person that I ever gave my recipe to I
4:57
don't know if you remember that I hope
4:58
you don't no I don't
5:00
well listen it's safe because I didn't
5:02
know I had it I about got I about got
5:04
divorced from that are you kidding yes
5:07
you when did you give me you and I did
5:09
it together one time on TV and and uh I
5:13
don't have it and I made it wouldn't
5:16
give it to everybody else but I gave it
5:17
to you no no no well see secrets are
5:22
safe with me yeah I got know the feeling
5:24
cuz I forget so quickly yeah golly bum
5:28
now I'm going to have to go back and
5:29
watch every show to find that show well
5:32
listen we got to take a quick break
5:34
stand and uh we going to get to talk
5:37
some more we going to sing for our
5:38
supper yeah we going to talk some more
5:40
all right good so we'll be right back
5:42
thank you the space that you live in
5:45
really affects the way you feel so my

6:37
3300 Okie do well we're back Stan uh
6:42
with Stan the Candyman Stan Strickland
6:45
that owns um the Savannah's candy sa
6:48
Candy Kitchen and also River Street
6:51
sweet that's my kids and now we've
6:53
combine children y'all candy making
6:56
family we are you know my mom made candy
6:58
in a place called RW pean back on
7:01
Highway 17 in the 40s that didn't really
7:05
have anything to do with me getting into
7:06
candy business but I was around it even
7:08
as a kid you know and our Divinity
7:11
recipe is is my mom's recipe you're
7:14
kiding and you know how our Divinity is
7:15
to make oh listen Stan my mother was the
7:19
queen of divinity I can see that
7:22
beautiful redheaded woman standing up
7:24
there with those two spoons just dipping
7:27
that beautiful Divinity and IJ in all
7:30
Beanie Georgia and it she never failed
7:35
with it she and every all the women in
7:37
our family would try to make it and they
7:39
said I can't car's just going to have we
7:41
still struggle with it we try not to
7:43
make it ever when it's raining you know
7:45
right can't make it on a rainy day and I
7:47
don't know that we can teach the country
7:49
how good Divinity is but in the fall
7:51
everybody loves the way it looks and I
7:53
think everybody still eats lots of it in
7:55
the fall oh I just Christmas do love it
7:58
and sometimes my will turn out like
8:00
masam and sometimes it won't well we've
8:03
got it now where we're doing it pretty
8:04
much I think we probably hand dip more
8:06
Divinity than anybody in the country
8:09
I've never found a machine like this you
8:11
call that we hand di it I've never seen
8:13
a machine that would do Divinity you
8:15
hand dip every piece of divinity yes
8:19
half a million pieces hand
8:20
dipped no yes at and where is that done
8:24
is that done here in Savannah we have a
8:26
factory now that's 75,000 ft I've heard
8:28
I hadn't been to Factory but I've heard
8:31
it's bad to the bone your boys have been
8:33
yes and uh but we have we do hand dip
8:36
divid and listen I know your buddies
8:39
with my husband don't ever let him in
8:41
your
8:43
factory just a word to the
8:46
wise he comes by at Christmas every
8:48
Christmas and get something for the kids
8:50
y'all help every year yes he comes by we
8:52
donate all the stuff Michael loves
8:54
working with that and he does that every
8:56
year yes I appreciate that years back
8:58
y'all I started working with the
9:00
Salvation Army you know and I I told my
9:04
children I said listen you know we've
9:07
we've
9:08
got more than we ever can need and I
9:12
think it's time for us to forget about
9:15
each other and and help tend to children
9:18
that that are not going to have anything
9:20
and they said Mama we are all in yeah I
9:23
think your whole family's been involved
9:24
in there yes the whole entire family and
9:27
so every Christmas Eve morning we go to
9:30
the Salvation Army and uh we play Santa
9:34
Claus and uh of course one of the
9:38
favorite things that's in their big old
9:41
uh sacks is Stan's candy Stan is kind
9:46
enough to to give us a lot of cakes and
9:50
candies we'll always do that well thank
9:53
you Stan it you know I've held fathers
9:57
in my arms while they cried like a baby
9:59
baby
10:02
uh and it's just
10:07
um you talk about you talking about with
10:09
the Salvation Army yes yes and it just
10:13
gives me great pleasure to be able to
10:15
help people that that need a hand up
10:20
yeah that hadn't been as fortunate as we
10:21
have that's that's right that's right so
10:24
I think thank you for I think you've
10:27
always been that way even before we
10:28
could even I can remember you back when
10:31
you were the bag lady okay so we were
10:34
needing handouts in instead of giving
10:36
handouts so yeah so those those times
10:39
have changed for all of us for both of
10:40
us yes I said Lord if I ever make it I
10:43
just want to be uh in a position to help
10:46
help other women and um finally in 2012
10:51
we were able to start my Foundation the
10:54
bag lady the Pauline bag lady
10:57
foundation and it it's designed to help
11:00
women and their children well I'm hoping
11:03
that you'll come up with some kind of
11:04
new recipe for the fall maybe to have us
11:06
work on um to be sold on Evan maybe for
11:10
this fall if you I'll put my thinking
11:12
cap on I'll put my thinking cap on uh do
11:16
you like dealing with apples or well you
11:18
know we're doing a lot of apples right
11:19
now but you're doing the candied apples
11:22
which are you're thinking about baking
11:24
with apples yeah we haven't done much of
11:26
that so that'd be good that'd be a good
11:28
place to go you know what I love I love
11:31
like a baked apple I wonder if we could
11:34
come up with a candied baked
11:38
apple and I don't know how long that the
11:41
life would be on them but oh my gosh I
11:44
bake apples for me in my uh air fryer my
11:49
air fryer I I've heard that air fryer
11:51
special oh listen it it can be
11:53
lifechanging for you you know if you're
11:54
want to cut back on your grease
11:57
consumption and all of that on your fats
12:00
um you think I need
12:03
that I think you ate one too many
12:06
praying that's for
12:08
sure I'm trying to do better listen it's
12:12
hard Michael's on a diet and I I I keep
12:15
trying you know I try to practice
12:18
moderation yeah you know just push back
12:22
and uh cuz I can't do without the things
12:24
I love I can't go cold turkey yeah but
12:28
you're cooking a lot different
12:30
not really not really um I did for four
12:33
months you know to get the initial
12:35
weight off uh but then I started
12:38
gradually adding things back but I'm
12:40
really trying to practice
12:42
moderation I could use some of that and
12:45
it's hard you know you have to slap your
12:48
hand but um I've been baking a lot of
12:51
apples in my air fryer and to me they're
12:54
so good so I was sitting here thinking
12:56
about that that candied Apple that you
13:00
do if somehow you could do that and then
13:02
bake it with like a cherry flavor from
13:05
the apple or you thinking about
13:06
something with caramel on it I'm talking
13:09
about something with caramel on it okay
13:11
would it stick to it car you know that
13:13
caramel I worked years on that caramel
13:15
recipe I don't believe anybody's making
13:17
as good a recipe as we are car oh no and
13:20
again we're making it by hand we're
13:21
making in 30 40 pound batches that's
13:23
small with the number of batches we are
13:25
having to make yeah does your factory
13:28
work 247 no we we run two shifts but not
13:33
three and then when Christmas gets here
13:35
in the fall we'll go y run three we'll
13:37
ship 10,000 people a day in the
13:39
Christmas in DEC holy moly we keep
13:42
tractor trailers backed up andly and a
13:44
bunch of that stuff you gonna sell yeah
13:47
hopefully it's going to be your product
13:48
yeah well I tell you what it sounds like
13:51
to me that stand strickling is probably
13:53
having to weigh his money instead of
13:56
count
13:57
it that wish
13:59
hey I told my dad one time I finally
14:02
makeing Mor Ang spin he says I don't
14:03
believe you and he was right oh you can
14:07
spend it pretty good I'm investing it
14:11
wisely boats fishing uhhuh things that
14:14
important yeah things that are important
14:16
you remember that chocolate bar I made
14:18
from you that time that chocolate bar
14:20
was oh my gosh this big with a pit your
14:23
view on it where'd he go you ate it I
14:25
think I don't know it weighed 30
14:28
something pounds chocolate bar yeah with
14:31
your picture in the middle of it uhuh oh
14:33
my gosh we've had fun over the years we
14:35
certainly have we've had fun and I hope
14:38
we continue I hope we got a lot more you
14:41
return huh that's what I said I don't
14:44
think either one of us will let retired
14:46
no honey no we got started late we got
14:48
to double up and catch up I'm with you
14:51
well I appreciate so much you coming in
14:53
and I know you're a busy man we it's
14:56
hard to even get you on the telephone
14:58
well I don't remember and then I held
15:00
him up this morning y'all cuz I was like
15:01
30 45 minutes L I should have known yeah
15:05
listen you always pad PA time right pad
15:09
PA time I like that hey I remember one
15:11
time we had to turn a jet around and
15:12
come back and get something you left
15:13
from your makeup bag so I understand
15:16
vola time no did that happen see I for
15:20
that happened no yes yes it did we were
15:23
going to New York you were doing a show
15:26
it was a fancy food show we had to turn
15:27
around no oh yeah oh
15:30
yeah that's those are fun thing I'm bad
15:33
I'm
15:34
bad well thank you my friend thanks for
15:37
inviting me wish you much more success
15:40

15:42

15:44

15:45

15:48
us yeah we'll try anything you give us
15:51
