20 years ago I was living in Yellowstone
0:03
National Park and mama called me home to
0:05
Savannah Georgia and said we going to
0:06
start a business uh we're going to be
0:08
working out of our house I'm not going
0:10
to be able to pay you it's just the
0:12
three of us and we're going to call it
0:14
the bag lady the bag
0:17
lady what in the world is a bag lady
0:20
well we're going to do fresh lunches and
0:22
deliver them around town well Mama where
0:24
we going to go oh here and there I will
0:27
never forget the first door that I
0:29
knocked on and basically begged them if
0:31
they wanted lunch I remember that and I
0:34
remember at any given moment my mama or
0:36
Aunt Peggy would be in the kitchen with
0:37
underwear on their head as a
0:39
hairnet 6th Street is the place that I
0:42
thought good gracious alive what are we
0:44
going to do now I am working for my mama
0:47
I'm living at my mama's house we got
0:49
discovered operating in illegal business
0:51
and had to move so we did what every
0:53
respectable business does we moved into
0:56
a motel we turned from the bag lady
0:58
catering business into the lady eating
1:01
house serving Fine Food we wound up on
1:05
the south side of Savannah at the Best
1:07
Western motel I thought working at the
1:10
house was hard but I had no idea what I
1:12
was in for when we started our time at
1:14
the Best Western we worked 7 days a week
1:17
365 days a year three meals a day I had
1:21
a chance to go in the old place last
1:22
week and I tell you stepping into that
1:25
place was just like stepping back into
1:27
time I remember being a young man and
1:29
working with Mama and and Bobby and had
1:31
much changed around there except the
1:33
attitude I felt a lot better walking in
1:35
today than I did 20 years
1:37
ago we did what we could we' never done
1:41
breakfast before and this was the place
1:42
that gave us the opportunity to do
1:44
breakfast lunch and dinner all year
1:49
long about halfway through our time here
1:51
we decided we start doing the hump day
1:53
buff on Wednesdays that's where we fixed
1:55
our granny Paul's meals at and we did it
1:58
all out of this little kitchen it's
1:59
hardly bigger than the bathroom at the
2:03
house me and Mama like to killed each
2:05
other in this kitchen didn't take long
2:08
before we outgrew the kitchen and we
2:09
outgrew the handwritten special menus
2:12
mom used to sit down and write them
2:14
every day and whatever we had is what we
2:16
sold we had a chance to move downtown
2:18
and boy howy was I happy to get out of
2:20
the Best Western we found oursel
2:22
downtown on Congress Street which is
2:24
just across the street from City Market
2:26
in beautiful historic Savannah we went
2:29
into the Barnet education Supply
2:30
building and we didn't have enough money
2:32
to do anything but for ourselves so
2:34
that's what we did we put up the ladders
2:37
we started painting and scraping and
2:39
doing everything we could to turn an old
2:41
education supply house into the newest
2:44
business located downtown in
2:46
Savannah we did it too the three of us
2:49
did it we turned it around and on
2:51
January the 8th of
2:52
1996 we opened the lady and Son's
2:58
restaurant paper even did did a story on
3:01
[Music]
3:02
us we were glad to be out of the Best
3:04
Western and happy to be at 311 West
3:07
Congress
3:09
[Music]
3:11
Street this room is some of the happiest
3:13
memories I ever
3:14
had we had a time to come together as a
3:17
family and grow into our business we had
3:19
a big family table in the back that
3:21
that's where Mama met Michael and we'd
3:24
get together four or five times a week
3:26
and share a meal around this big table
3:29
These Old Creek floors my brother used
3:31
to mop them every Sunday SP and
3:39
span this was a good place for us we had
3:42
fun
3:44
[Music]
3:54
[Music]
3:56
together the spot on the wall where the
3:58
old fireplace is this is where we had
4:00
our first photo shoot I put on my good
4:04
shirt the place here where I stood and I
4:06
saw Mama come out of our little halfdo
4:08
office that we had on the dining room
4:10
floor and said that Random House in New
4:12
York City was interested in looking at
4:14
our cookbook that we self-published I
4:15
could not hardly believe it but it
4:18
wasn't long and they put out the lady
4:19
and Sun Savannah Country
4:21
Cookbook I never thought I'd see the day
4:24
that my little Mama went and did a book
4:28
signing she did it
4:31
up here in the front of the restaurants
4:33
where we met Gordon Elliott and Gordon
4:35
said oh Paula you would just be
4:37
fantastic on my television show and I
4:39
thought huh New York City
4:44
guy we managed to grow into our business
4:46
we had 30 or 40 employees and every day
4:49
brought a new challenge but we felt like
4:51
we were doing something at least we
4:53
weren't at the house or at the Best
4:54
Western anymore this is where we grew up
4:58
and grew together
5:00
[Music]
5:09
just like before we'd outgrown this
5:10
space and it was time to move again so
5:12
we did but we stayed on Congress Street
5:15
the restaurant now is at 102 West
5:17
Congress Street in beautiful Downtown
5:19
Savannah Georgia in the Historic
5:21
Landmark white Hardware building one
5:24
week before Thanksgiving in 2003 we
5:27
opened the Lady and Sons restaurant
5:31
again this is home this is where we'll
5:34
always be we've got 350 employees and we
5:38
spent two weeks hands on mom was there
5:41
Bobby and myself not only were we
5:43
training all of our new employees we
5:45
were training ourselves we'd never
5:47
worked in a split level business before
5:50
we had three stories and it took us
5:51
almost two weeks to figure out that we
5:54
needed handheld radios and
5:55
walkie-talkies to talk to each
5:58
other it's hard to believe in 20 years
6:01
we've gone from three people to
6:04
350 we made some good friends and we've
6:07
really built up a good
6:10
business my mom's wedding reception was
6:12
in this building my rehearsal dinner was
6:15
in this building when Brooke and I got
6:17
[Music]
6:28
married we went from a little chicken CP
6:31
store into the full-fledged Pine store
6:35
this is where all the things that Mama
6:37
enjoys doing you can find in one spot
6:40
off spices pots and pans
6:43
cookbooks yep lot here has changed in 20
6:47
years we've got our awning from The Lady
6:49
and Sons restaurant hanging upstairs on
6:51
the third floor and mama said you know
6:53
what boys I'll tear that Suns off of
6:55
that sign in a second if I think y'all
6:57
aren't going to work as hard as you
6:58
should but she never had
7:01
to we made it and we stayed together all
7:03
this time still The Lady and
7:07
Sons and no matter what we've been
7:09
through or what we've
7:12
done or what the address has
7:15
been we've always been there for each
7:19
[Music]
7:21
other and that's been enough
