hey y'all welcome to another episode of
0:02
what's cooking with Paula Deen and the
0:05
other day I did some tips over recipes
0:08
that I've made through the years that
0:10
people seem to like so I've just tried
0:13
to give you some hints and tips maybe
0:17
that I didn't have time to give you
0:19
during the show so I heard that y'all
0:22
enjoyed it so we're gonna do this again
0:24
and today I'm gonna go through making a
0:28
cake with you that was just so much fun
0:32
to make I had been home to Albany
0:34
Georgia we've celebrated my best
0:36
friend's Mother's like 94th birthday and
0:39
this young lady from Albany had made
0:42
ring-ring this beautiful cake and when
0:44
you sliced it it was like all different
0:47
colors all throughout the layers and I
0:50
thought it was so pretty so I said well
0:52
I wanted to show this to all my friends
0:54
out there and try my hand at it to see
0:58
if I could do it well I did it and it
1:00
was so much fun so I want to walk
1:03
through with y'all how easy this
1:06
beautiful interesting rainbow of a cake
1:09
how easy it was to do all right now you
1:12
can start with a box cake mix if you
1:15
like or you can make your your cake from
1:19
scratch which I really like this from
1:22
scratch cake but the the instructions
1:26
that I'm gonna give you today is just a
1:30
basic yellow cake and we're gonna start
1:32
with two sticks of butter that have been
1:35
brought to room temperature two cups of
1:38
sugar 4 eggs 3 cups of self-rising flour
1:43
a cup of milk vanilla extract and a
1:48
teaspoon of almond extract so we're
1:52
gonna cream my butter which we brought
1:55
to room temperature we're gonna cream it
1:57
until it's nice and creamy and then
2:00
we're gonna add our sugar to our our
2:03
beet butter and we're gonna whip those
2:07
together until they're nice and creamy
2:09
and smooth and
2:12
that'll take you know maybe five to
2:16
eight minutes but you'll want to cream
2:17
it well and then we're slowly gonna add
2:21
an egg one at the time and if you're
2:25
using an electric mixer it's so
2:27
important that you have you a spatula
2:29
that you can stop your motor that you
2:33
can cut off your machine lift your
2:35
beaters up and make sure you scrape
2:37
around that bow real good because you'll
2:41
want to make sure all that's
2:43
incorporated so we've got our three cups
2:46
of self-rising flour and our one cup of
2:50
milk on the counter now we're gonna
2:52
start adding our flour and milk and
2:55
we're gonna begin with flour and we're
2:58
gonna end with flour and I can't tell
3:01
you why but I know that's the way you're
3:05
supposed to do it
3:06
it makes for a creamier smoother black
3:09
up batter when you start and end with
3:13
flour so I'll scoop up maybe a heaping
3:19
fourth of a cup full and I'll put that
3:22
in my creamed mixture and I'll beat that
3:26
and then I'll cut off my my mixer and
3:29
I'll go around with my spatula scraping
3:31
all that goodI down so it gets all in
3:35
the beaters of your your mixer so I'll
3:39
do that until I have used all the milk
3:42
and all the flour mixture and then
3:49
you'll want to take a teaspoon or two of
3:53
vanilla extract now I always use the
3:56
real thing it's just easier and it
4:01
tastes so much better it's a little bit
4:03
more expensive but it's worth it do you
4:06
Sapir enough vanilla extract versus an
4:12
artificial vanilla flavoring and then
4:16
I'll add in a teaspoon of almond
4:19
flavoring and you want to mix that just
4:22
tool in its incorporated and then we're
4:25
going
4:26
divide our batter we've got three 9-inch
4:29
cake pans and I always take me wax paper
4:34
and I'll lay my pan on top of the wax
4:38
paper and I'll go around the edges with
4:41
my scissors because I want to I don't
4:45
want my cake to stick to the pans I want
4:49
it to come out perfectly so I'll cut me
4:54
a piece of wax paper for each of my pans
4:56
and I will use a baking spray to spray
5:02
around the edges and the bottom and then
5:05
I'll put my wax paper on it the spray
5:09
helps your wax paper from moving around
5:12
on you so I've got my three pans
5:15
prepared I've sprayed them and I put the
5:19
wax paper down in the bottom of each of
5:22
them so they my cakes won't stick there
5:25
is nothing worse than spending your time
5:28
and money and then your cake stick I've
5:31
had it happen and it's not fun the space
5:36
that you live in really affects the way
5:38
you feel so my first recommendation is

6:19
or call one eight hundred six five nine
6:24
3300 that's one eight hundred six five
6:27
nine 3300 all right now here comes the
6:34
fun part we are gonna take our batter
6:38
and we're gonna pour it into four
6:40
separate bowls and try to try to mix it
6:46
evenly as you can try to separate that
6:51
batter of cake mix into four equal
6:55
portions
6:56
so then we're gonna use I have found
7:00
that I love the gel food coloring Joe
7:02
they are really vibrant in their color
7:08
so you'll want to mix up your favorite
7:12
colors naturally a red or green a blue
7:15
and I love the purple color the purple
7:21
it just reminds me of an Easter Egg I
7:23
just love the vibrant color of purple so
7:27
we're gonna color each of our bowls of
7:30
batter and then we're going to take our
7:33
cake pan and we're gonna spoon out a big
7:37
dollop of batter say a purple batter and
7:46
on top of that we're gonna choose
7:49
another color say green and we're gonna
7:53
put a spoonful of the green right into
7:56
the middle of our perfect all right and
7:59
we're gonna put that right in the middle
8:01
of our purple and you can see as we add
8:05
cake mix to your circle that it's
8:09
eventually gonna make it to the edge of
8:12
your pan alright so we've got our purple
8:15
down we've put a big dollop of say green
8:19
down alright on our next one we're gonna
8:23
use a big ol scoop of say pink what the
8:27
color of my sweat sweater it's gonna
8:30
look like beautiful mush strawberries
8:33
and each time that layer of cake
8:37
is gonna move closer and closer to the
8:40
edge until we have got enough batter in
8:44
there to make a nice fat layer and then
8:48
we're gonna go to our second pan and do
8:50
it the same way but you can mix up your
8:54
colors you can start with a yellow or a
8:57
blue or a green or a purple whatever
9:01
color you want and then just keep
9:04
spooning batter on top of batter and
9:07
you'll watch your batter spread out in
9:09
that pan and when you take out of the
9:11
oven and cut into it it's gonna have all
9:14
these beautiful rainbow colors in it so
9:18
we're gonna bake that in a preheated 350
9:21
degree oven for about 20 to 25 minutes
9:24
and there's a few ways that you can tell
9:28
if your cake is done you can put your
9:30
finger in the center of it and if it
9:33
springs back then you know your cake is
9:36
done and also a good way to tell is when
9:42
your cake is done your cake will pull
9:44
away from the sides of the pan and you
9:47
can very easily see that so you'll want
9:50
to take this your cake pants out of your
9:53
oven and you'll want to let them rest
9:56
but just a couple of minutes and then I
9:58
always have a rack that that is actually
10:05
in three pieces it was like an accordion
10:07
it will close up or open up so I opened
10:12
my up my rack up and I take each cake
10:17
and turn it out of the pan and put it on
10:21
the rack on my cooling rack and you'll
10:25
want to let it cool completely to room
10:29
temperature because once we iced it you
10:33
know if the cake is warm then it'll melt
10:35
our icing all right so we've got our
10:38
icing made and that's two cups of butter
10:41
at room temperature and four cups of
10:44
confectioner's sugar beat together and
10:47
you'll want to add probably one to two
10:49
tablespoons of milk to just get it
10:51
spreading consistency but a little milk
10:54
goes a long way with confectioner sugar
10:56
so you'll want to be real real careful
10:58
now that we've gotten it beat up well
11:00
we'll want to add a teaspoon and a half
11:04
maybe a vanilla flavoring or a little
11:09
almond flavoring I usually use a
11:12
teaspoon of vanilla and a teaspoon of
11:16
almond so your cake is is ready to frost
11:22
and your children your grandchildren
11:25
they are gonna just love slicing into
11:29
that cake but you know what they'll love
11:31
even more is helping you make the cake
11:36
because it really is fun watching all
11:39
those vibrant gel food colorings work
11:42
together I hope y'all like it and I hope
11:45
this is maybe a little easier for you
11:47
but you gotta make that cake the space
