- Hey, y'all, today is gonna be a fun day in my kitchen
0:03
because I'm gonna be walking down memory lane
0:07
and I am with the best person in the world
0:10
to walk down memory lane with because it's my Aunt Peggy.
0:15
And the sour cream pound cake,
0:18
I call it Granny Paul's sour cream pound cake.
0:23
I have had a thousand compliments on this, Aunt Peggy.
0:27
I run into people all the time saying
0:29
"I make that grandmother's pound cake
0:32
and it's out of this world."
0:34
And it's so funny 'cause Grandma was a baker
0:38
and Mama didn't do a lot of baking.
0:41
She would have, Bubba and me, warm banana pudding
0:46
lots of times sitting on the counter by the back door
0:48
when we'd race in from school.
0:50
And I was asking Aunt Peggy last night,
0:54
"You weren't a baker, were you?
0:56
Did you ever make a cake?"
0:58
And she said, "No."
1:00
I said, "Well, did you ever make anything sweet?"
1:03
And she said, "Yes." And I said, "What?"
1:07
She said, "A chocolate meringue pie."
1:10
(laughs) My Aunt Peggy, trying to describe her.
1:16
She doesn't want to do what somebody's telling her to do.
1:22
(laughs) Then I was coming up with ways to describe it.
1:26
And I was thinking free balling it.
1:30
- [Eddie] No, but maybe free spirit. Maybe. (laughs)
1:32
- Free spirit. Anyway, she doesn't like using recipes.
1:38
She wants to do it her way.
1:40
So therefore she's never had any interest in baking
1:43
'cause somebody's telling her what to do
1:44
and she ain't putting up with that crap.
1:47
Right? - Yes. (laughs)
1:48
- (laughs) Some things never change.
1:53
She's the president of her company. (laughs)
1:57
So (laughs) but listen, she sure does enjoy them
2:02
when I make them.
2:04
And when grandmamma was around and she made them,
2:08
so I'm gonna have a question to ask you in a minute.
2:11
So I think I'll go ahead and ask you now, Aunt Peggy.
2:16
This cake is so beautiful.
2:19
It's wonderful with just vanilla flavoring
2:22
but I've got a lot of options over there
2:26
in my baking cabinet of different flavors we could use.
2:31
So I would like for you to be thinking about what flavor,
2:38
if any flavor, you would like this cake to be.
2:41
We have got, let's see, what have we got in here?
2:43
(phone ringing) We've got almond flavor, vanilla.
2:49
Excuse me. Y'all I gotta let somebody in.
2:53
Hello? - Hey, it's Patty.
2:54
(indistinct) - Thank you. Bye bye.
2:57
(doorbell rings) (dog barks)
3:00
Okay, just go tell 'em. Go let 'em in.
3:04
It's so funny, Gus knows when that phone rings a certain way
3:09
that it's the gate and somebody is coming in this house.
3:14
So he's gotta go greet 'em, y'all.
3:16
All right, Eddie, I'm gonna look up here
3:20
and see what all kind of flavorings we got.
3:22
We got banana, we got coconut. (dog barking)
3:29
I can't even read that one. - That's the orange.
3:31
- Orange, more banana. (dog barking)
3:39
What does that one say, Eddie? - Peppermint.
3:41
- Peppermint, she doesn't like peppermint.
3:45
That's red food coloring.
3:49
And that's the butter one.
3:52
So I'll use this with whatever flavor she picks out.
3:56
Have you decided yet? - What flavor?
4:00
- Have you decided on the flavor you want?
4:03
- I didn't hear you call out lemon.
4:05
- (laughs) I knew, I knew she was gonna say that!
4:10
And she's right, because I don't think I have
4:12
any lemon flavoring. - We have fresh, fresh lemons.
4:17
- [Aunt Peggy] Then your choice.
4:18
- Well, if you wanted a lemon, we've got fresh lemons
4:23
and I will use those and we can grate some zest.
4:28
- [Aunt Peggy] Yes, I like all that.
4:30
- Uh huh and what do you do when you take that skin off?
4:35
(laughs) Tell me what you do.
4:40
- I don't like telling you how to do things. (laughs)
4:45
- (laughs) What did you call it?
4:48
- Zass, did I say zass? Jest.
4:50
- Jest. (laughs) - Jest, I think it was.
4:57
- One day when we were in here in the kitchen,
4:58
she said, "Can you jest me some lemon?" (laughs)
5:07
And I said, "What'd you say you want me to
5:08
get you some lemon?" (laughs)
5:12
So that's why I asked. (laughs) I'm sorry, y'all.
5:15
I know I've embarrassed her but I can't help it.
5:17
- (indistinct) - I love to hear you say jest.
5:22
(laughs) Alright, so back to business.
5:25
So I'm gonna be taking a break in a second
5:28
and I'm gonna jest some lemon and get some juice up.
5:32
(laughs) - Great. (laughs)
5:33
- All right, now in this bowl
5:36
I have three cups of plain flour, a teaspoon of salt
5:42
and lots of times I don't too much
5:45
measure this stuff either.
5:49
Half a teaspoon of baking soda, not powder, but soda.
5:56
I have six eggs. I have a cup of sour cream.
6:01
And I have, at room temperature, two sticks of butter
6:06
and three cups of sugar here in my mixer.
6:09
So I already started creaming them but here we go.
6:15
We're gonna let that cream real good.
6:19
And then we're alternating our flour and our eggs together.
6:27
But as soon as this creams,
6:29
I'm gonna add the sour cream to our mix.
6:34
Okay, our butter and our sugar has creamed
6:42
so I have just added one cup of sour cream.
6:53
Let's see, what'd I do with my rag?
6:59
There it is.
7:00
All right, now we're gonna alternately add
7:03
our sifted flour, salt and baking soda
7:08
into our sugar and butter mixture.
7:11
And we're gonna start with flour
7:13
and we're gonna end with flour, y'all.
7:16
And where you would normally alternate with a buttermilk
7:20
or something like that,
7:22
we're gonna alternate with eggs.
7:25
(dog barking) Sorry, y'all.
7:28
Hush, hush it's Sullivan!
7:31
Y'all don't go crazy. Crazy.
7:38
All right, so there's our one egg.
7:44
Hey, Sullivan, where have you been?
7:47
- [Sullivan] (speaker drowned out by mixer)
7:50
- Huh? Your new house?
7:52
What's going on?
7:54
- [Sullivan] Nothing really.
7:56
(speaker drowned out by mixer)
7:57
- Nothing really?
7:58
- [Sullivan] (speaker drowned out by mixer)
8:04
- Okay, well, I missed you while you was gone. (laughs)
8:10
Carly and Brian sold the home that they were living in,
8:15
y'all, and they bought a new home.
8:19
Well, it's not new but they are redoing
8:26
a lot, a lot of things in the house
8:29
and they can't stay in the house right now.
8:31
It's not occupiable.
8:33
So they are staying here with us
8:36
while the work is being done on their home.
8:41
And it's gonna be beautiful. Just beautiful.
8:48
(dog barking) Hush!
8:52
Hush, hush, hush!
8:58
I'm telling ya, sometimes I'd like to
9:00
give them a tranquilizer, Eddie.
9:04
They bark so much. Not really.
9:10
'Cause sure as I'd do it,
9:12
I would need for them to bark
9:14
and let me know about something.
9:16
All right, that's egg number three.
9:24
It's looking so good.
9:32
Wow, I just love watching cake batter come together,
9:37
especially when I'm using my Paula Deen mixer.
9:42
Because I sat down at the table with my friend, Bob,
9:49
and told him everything I didn't like in a regular mixer
9:53
and everything I would love to have
9:56
if I could have a mixer developed.
10:00
And this one is just wonderful.
10:03
You can see my bowl is turning
10:06
but you can also see my beaters are moving back
10:10
and forth at the same time.
10:13
And I don't know if Eddie can get in there
10:15
but if you could see in there,
10:17
you would see a helping hand
10:20
that is constantly scraping the side of the bowl.
10:25
If you come around here, Eddie, and shoot down in there,
10:30
you can see where the bowl is being scraped.
10:36
And I don't have to stop not one time
10:40
to scrape the sides of that bowl.
10:43
And I love that, y'all.
10:46
I love that feature.
10:50
All right, so the fourth egg is going in
10:58
and this is gonna work out just about perfect.
11:08
But I just love seeing it come together.
11:10
And the thing about my mixer is lots of times,
11:15
if you're putting a cake together, you can get to the bottom
11:18
when you're ready to put it in your cake pan
11:22
is you find just a glob of stuff at the bottom.
11:26
Well, I don't seem to have that problem with this mixer.
11:30
I just love it.
11:33
All right, so we're almost there.
11:41
I'm gonna let that flour get mixed in.
11:44
The helping hand is the biggest,
11:46
the biggest treat of all though.
11:51
Because usually when I'm baking a cake,
11:53
I'll have to stop, I'll have to cut the motor.
11:58
Stop, and at least eight times,
12:02
I'll have to stop and scrape the bowl.
12:03
And that gets very old to me.
12:10
Okay, then we get the flour.
12:19
Okay, I'm gonna let that turn that flour,
12:22
let it get one turn.
12:30
The last egg and that was a good egg.
12:36
Had a lot of white to it.
12:37
Did you see that egg? - Yeah.
12:43
- Okay and the last of the flour.
12:48
So, Aunt Peggy, I'm gonna go ahead
12:50
and add some vanilla flavoring.
12:55
But then I'm gonna put some lemon juice in there too, okay?
13:01
(laughs)
13:08
I wonder if I should use
13:09
some of that butter extract.
13:13
Smells like pure butter, why not.
13:16
We'll have a buttery lemon cake.
13:21
Usually, Aunt Peggy, I put almond flavoring
13:24
and vanilla flavoring in my pound cake.
13:27
But I don't think Grandma did.
13:29
I think she just used plain vanilla flavoring.
13:36
Ooh, it's so pretty.
13:39
That's some pretty, pretty batter.
13:43
Well, I'm gonna cut the mixer off
13:45
and I'm gonna take a little break
13:48
so y'all don't have to sit here
13:49
watching me squeeze lemons
13:51
and I'm gonna squeeze some lemon juice
13:53
and put in this cake for our Great Great.
13:57
Okay, so now we're ready to put our cake batter
14:00
into our tube pan.
14:04
And I've got about a tablespoon of zest here.
14:08
Or jest, a tablespoon of jest. (laughs)
14:16
Listen, my Aunt Peggy is as smart as a whip, y'all.
14:20
She is smart as a whip
14:22
but she can murder the English language
14:27
kinda like I can. (laughs) (Aunt Peggy laughs)
14:30
I don't know where I get that from (laughs)
14:34
but Michael and I tease her all the time
14:40
about her pronunciation of certain words.
14:44
So anyway, (laughs) anyway I put a tablespoon of jest
14:51
(laughs) and I put about a fourth of a cup of lemon juice.
14:55
And I really do wish I had some lemon extract
15:00
to make it really more lemony.
15:02
But I think what I'll do is I'll make a lemon glaze for it
15:06
and that'll kick that lemon up.
15:08
I think you're gonna like it.
15:09
Aunt Peggy just asked me, she said,
15:12
"What if I don't like it?"
15:14
I said, "If you don't like it, don't tell me." (laughs)
15:16
(Aunt Peggy laughs)
15:17
I said, "But all I have to do is look at your face
15:22
and I'll know that you're lying (laughs)
15:26
if you're telling me you like it and you don't.
15:28
I'll so be able to tell."
15:31
'Cause you are like your niece or your niece is like you.
15:38
Lying ain't one of our fortes. (laughs)
15:43
- No, we get too much joy out of telling the truth,
15:45
- Out of telling the truth, yes.
15:46
- as we see it. (laughs)
15:48
- So I will be able to tell if you don't like it.
15:55
And we're gonna cook this cake on 325
16:01
for maybe 65, 75 minutes.
16:07
I think Grandma said that she cooked it
16:11
for about an hour and 20 minutes.
16:13
I can't remember. I'll have to look at the recipe.
16:17
I'm getting every bit of that goody out.
16:21
So I'm gonna leave enough for Aunt Peggy to lick that
16:26
and tell me if she tastes any lemon on it.
16:29
Here, you gotta, I'm not gonna stand here
16:31
and then hold it for you. (laughs)
16:34
She's been here six months, and I have to say,
16:39
I think I mighta spoiled her a little bit.
16:41
You think, Eddie? (laughs) (Eddie laughs)
16:46
I've loved taking care of her, during this COVID stuff.
16:52
- Yeah, I was coming for three or four weeks.
16:54
- (laughs) Yes, you was coming for three weeks,
16:56
it's been six months.
16:58
But she has had terrible, terrible, terrible back
17:01
and hip issues, so I kinda had a captured audience with her.
17:06
(laughs) She couldn't walk. (Aunt Peggy laughs)
17:11
And she couldn't walk, she couldn't go home.
17:15
All right, you taste any lemon in that at all?
17:18
- Yes, I do and it, so far, the flavor to me is good
17:22
but you can make a judgment.
17:25
- I'll make a judgment when you eat a piece of the cake
17:27
and I look at your face. (laughs)
17:30
So let's see what Grandma said.
17:33
An hour and 20 minutes at 325.
17:38
Let's see. Our oven is on convection,
17:40
so I think I'm gonna take that off of convection, Eddie.
17:44
Because this oven, when you've got it on convection,
17:49
it's very, very hot.
17:53
All right, so I'm gonna set our timer.
17:58
And I will see y'all back here,
18:03
probably in an hour and 20 minutes.
18:05
But, y'all, it's gonna seem like that long. (laughs)
18:08
That hour and 20 minutes just gonna fly by. (laughs)
18:12
Okay, y'all, our beautiful pound cake is ready.
18:17
Grandma Paul's sour cream pound cake
18:21
and Great Great asked for it to be lemon.
18:26
So look at that. - Smells wonderful.
18:28
- Doesn't it smell wonderful.
18:30
Well, come look at it, Great Great.
18:34
Now Grandma said cook it for an hour and 20 minutes.
18:37
We cooked it for an hour and 10 minutes.
18:41
Isn't that pretty? - Mm-hmm.
18:43
- What do you think about me making some syrup,
18:47
some lemon syrup water and just pour a little of that
18:51
over there to give it that fresh lemon taste?
18:54
- Mm-hmm, that'd be good.
18:56
- Okay, well, let's do that. - Good.
19:00
- We'll pour on top and then. (laughs)
19:02
Oh, you're welcome. You're welcome, I love ya.
19:08
So I'll get some syrup going on the stove
19:16
and we'll pour it over it.
19:20
Okay, friends, I have made a lemon syrup
19:28
and I'm just gonna pour some of this around there
19:30
because I really am hoping
19:34
since I didn't have any lemon extract
19:37
and I really wanted to give it a good, strong lemony flavor.
19:41
So you just kinda wanna do maybe equal parts sugar
19:47
to equal parts water.
19:50
And I took my little bitty spoon that Eddie gave me that,
19:53
I love this spoon so much,
19:55
this is what I made my holes with in my cake.
19:59
And I put my lemons in and cooked them
20:05
along with the sugar water and the juice from the lemons.
20:14
So we're gonna just pour that on and let that sit
20:18
and then we're gonna take it outta the pan.
20:23
And then I'm gonna make a little lemon glaze for the top
20:28
when it comes out.
20:29
Oh, look, Great Great's clapping. (laughs)
20:32
- I like the glaze. - (laughs) She likes that.
20:36
I like a glaze too.
20:39
Look, y'all, the boys are multiplying.
20:42
Another one just showed up. This is Henry.
20:47
Are you number four or number five?
20:50
- Three. - Three.
20:52
- Oh yeah, you're number three.
20:53
- I'm second. - No, you're not second.
20:55
- You're not second! - I'm older than John.
20:58
- Well, you're not older than me. I turned nine.
21:00
- All right, Jack came first.
21:02
Maddie came next, Henry name next.
21:04
- Third. Then Sully.
21:06
- Sully may be fourth. - Years.
21:10
- I think you came before John.
21:12
- Yeah. - Backwards. One of the ways.
21:14
Anyway, there's 11 of them, y'all
21:17
and I never know when they're gonna show up.
21:20
But it's just funny that they showed up for cake time.
21:24
- For cake. - There's something very
21:27
suspicious about that. (laughs)
21:32
Oh, they're so sweet, y'all.
21:34
So they helped me mix up a glaze for our
21:38
Grandma Paul's sour cream pound cake
21:40
that we turned into a lemon pound cake for Aunt Peggy.
21:44
So we have made a glaze.
21:46
Well, after we did that, I poked holes in it
21:49
and I made up a lemon sugar syrup,
21:52
cooked it for a while 'til it was thick,
21:54
and then I poured that over the cake
21:57
while it was still in the pan.
21:59
But now, guys, we're gonna spoon a glaze over it
22:07
'cause Great Great likes glazes.
22:11
Just like me too. (laughs)
22:15
So we're just gonna let that run down the edges.
22:21
And we made our glaze, y'all, out of cream cheese,
22:27
- Yummy. - powdered sugar
22:32
and our liquid was lemon juice.
22:37
So didn't I say we put a little cream cheese
22:39
in it, Eddie? - Yes.
22:40
- [Paula] Cream cheese, powdered sugar, lemon juice.
22:45
- [Henry] That's why it smells like lemons.
22:47
- Yes, that's why it smells like lemon
22:49
and I like a thick glaze,
22:54
I just like for it to stick.
22:56
I like for it to be thick enough that you can see it.
23:02
So I'm gonna take that now
23:03
and just start kinda spooning
23:06
and I let the cake get real, real cool.
23:10
It's been sitting for a while.
23:16
What do y'all think? - Yummy.
23:19
- What do y'all think? - Yummy.
23:20
- What do you think? Ooh. - I don't know.
23:25
- You don't know? (laughs) - It looks so good.
23:28
- It does look so good. So good.
23:38
- Can we help? - Can you help?
23:41
- Yeah. - All right, can you--
23:43
- Me and Henry. - Okay, can you take
23:45
that spoon and drizzle it where you see.
23:50
Whoa! (laughs) Yeah, do it, there you go.
23:56
- Voila. - Voila.
23:59
All right, Henry, you get the next spoon.
24:04
- Yeah. - And just drizzle that
24:10
where you think it needs it.
24:14
Don't. Whoa, whoa, whoa! (laughs)
24:17
Can't put it in the hole. (laughs)
24:22
There ya go.
24:24
- [Sully] Just drizzle it on the bottom of the cake.
24:30
- [Paula] That looks like a cinnamon roll, doesn't it?
24:34
- [Sullivan] Looks like a big--
24:35
- [Paula] Eddie makes wonderful--
24:37
It looks like a big cinnamon roll.
24:39
- Cinnamon roll. - Cinnamon. Cinnamon.
24:43
- Cinnamon. Okay, I think we've got one more.
24:47
I think Guinny can get, ooh, I did.
24:49
I was able to get one more spoon.
24:56
Who's swallowed their tongue yet?
24:59
Has anybody swallowed their tongue?
25:01
- [Henry] I already licked my fingers.
25:03
- [Paula] (laughs) That looks
25:04
like a great big cinnamon roll.
25:10
I love it, I love it.
25:12
So we want a little to fall down around the edges.
25:17
See, I'm gonna just encourage it to roll down the sides
25:22
just a little bit. - This one's rolling down
25:25
all the way. - Yeah, that's running
25:26
down good, isn't it.
25:33
So you just-- - Smur it.
25:35
- Huh? - Smur it.
25:37
- (laughs) Smear it? - Smur it.
25:40
- (laughs) Now who pronounces smear like that?
25:43
Who have you heard say smur it?
25:45
- Well, I'm country so.
25:47
- (laughs) Oh, you are?
25:52
I thought you were a city slicker.
25:54
- Well, all right in the city
25:55
but I get my accent from my mom and dad.
25:57
- Oh, you get your accent from your mom and dad?
25:59
- Yeah. - What kind of accent
26:01
do you have? - Country.
26:03
- Country. (laughs) You think your mama sounds country?
26:10
All right now, boys? - Yes.
26:12
- Are y'alls fingers sticky?
26:14
- No, 'cause they only got--
26:16
- Well, why don't y'all come wash your hands anyway
26:19
just for Guinny. - Hot!
26:23
Well, turn it, Henry, if it's too hot.
26:29
Okay, a little lemon zest.
26:34
And Great Great, come up here and look at your cake now.
26:40
Come look. - Turn that water off, Sull.
26:44
- [Aunt Peggy] Come on, come on.
26:44
Come, come, come, come, come. - Come, come, come, come.
26:50
- [Henry] That lemon powder?
26:53
That lemon powder, Guinny?
26:54
- No, that's lemon jest. - Lemon-ine, lemon-ine.
27:00
- Aunt Peggy called it lemon jest one time
27:04
and I won't let her live it down, boys.
27:07
All right, come on up here next to your Great Great
27:10
and let's take a picture. - It's called lemon-ine.
27:12
- All right, get in there in different sizes.
27:15
- Are we still doing a video? - Yes. (laughs)
27:21
You know, this is just wonderful.
27:24
The age difference,
27:25
being in the kitchen with the older and wiser
27:30
and being in the kitchen with the young ones
27:32
that are just starting their road to hopefully
27:37
a long, healthy, happy, good life
27:43
just does something to me.
27:46
So I hope y'all have the opportunity,
27:49
or have had the opportunity,
27:50
to know what I'm talking about.
27:52
Bon appetite and love and best dishes. (laughs).
