0:00
(bracelets rattling) - Hey y'all. It is summertime.
0:03
Are y'all's children driving you crazy?
0:06
I know that my 11 grandchildren are working on their mamas
0:11
to find something to do this summer
0:14
and constantly looking for something to eat.
0:16
I talked to Brooke this morning.
0:17
She said Davis is crawling all over the counters,
0:21
up in the cabinets, looking for something to eat,
0:23
and of course it's always junk. (laughs)
0:27
So I'm gonna share with y'all a recipe
0:29
that was in Cooking with Paula Deen Magazine that,
0:32
you know, you can make this every day,
0:34
especially when the strawberries are coming in, so pretty.
0:37
And it's pretty simple.
0:39
It's got a few steps,
0:40
but other than that, it's so very easy.
0:43
And I have Casey helping me in the kitchen today.
0:50
Casey, how long have we been together, honey?
0:52
- 2005. - How many years is that?
0:55
(Paula laughing) - Oh my gosh.
0:58
- [Eddie] You were just a little girl.
0:59
- I was 20. I'm about to be 40.
1:04
- So we've been together a long time.
1:08
And I love this girl. She's so sweet and even keeled.
1:12
So Theresa's husband is having
1:15
rotator cuff surgery today.
1:19
So say a prayer for Keith.
1:24
She'll be back soon. I know that's a bad surgery, isn't it?
1:30
- All right, so I'm gonna jump ahead
1:31
before I mess with the strawberries, y'all.
1:33
I've got some unflavored gelatin and I wanna do this part
1:37
because my water is still really hot
1:42
and I don't want it to get cool on me.
1:43
So that's two tablespoons of hot water.
1:46
It was a little shy on that one.
1:48
Two tablespoons of hot water,
1:49
the two tablespoons of unflavored gelatin.
1:56
So I'm going to get that done and set it aside,
2:01
giving it some whisk bisk. (dishes clanking)
2:04
And now I've got my strawberries.
2:06
And these are beautiful strawberries.
2:09
So I've got my strawberries. (bracelets rattling)
2:11
I've got a cup of sugar, a tablespoon of lemon juice.
2:18
And I'm just gonna take my old timey potato masher
2:24
and mash those up some. (bracelets rattling)
2:27
We have our pie crust here and our pie crust is
2:33
made out of, like, vanilla wafer crumbs.
2:38
Or you can just use graham cracker crumbs.
2:41
Whatever kind you want to use, it really doesn't matter.
2:45
(bracelets rattling) (door slamming)
2:48
We're going to put this in the fridge,
2:49
let it sit for about 30 minutes for that sugar to melt.
2:57
And then we're gonna put it in our pie crust.
3:00
And Casey froze our pie crust.
3:04
So it's gonna be nice and cuttable.
3:07
(pan clanking) It's gonna cut much easier.
3:10
So while this is working, (bracelets rattling)
3:15
I'll find something else to do.
3:18
Y'all, do you remember when I did the plain gelatin
3:23
with the hot water to dissolve?
3:26
Well, Eddie is very, very efficient.
3:30
- [Eddie] I'm not that efficient. I'm not. (laughs)
3:32
- Yeah, you're pretty efficient.
3:36
he was cleaning up and he threw the only gelatin,
3:41
plain gelatin, that I had away.
3:44
So we are gonna improvise.
3:50
I've got some strawberry jello.
3:53
So I'm gonna use that.
3:57
I'm gonna use one table spoon of strawberry gelatin
4:04
and I'm gonna see if this works.
4:07
And if we can't cut the pie, (bracelets rattling)
4:11
come after Eddie like white on rice.
4:14
- [Eddie] We'll just use a spoon.
4:16
It'll go down the same way. (laughs)
4:19
- I hope so. (bracelets rattling)
4:22
I don't know if I need to use a little bit more.
4:27
I don't know if plain gelatin is the same equivalence.
4:32
So I'm gonna use a little bit more
4:36
just to make sure this will congeal.
4:40
So now we are gonna mix
4:45
our gelatin and our hot water.
4:48
Wanna make sure it's dissolved good.
4:54
Pour that in there. (bracelets rattling)
4:57
Make sure I get all that gelatin in there.
5:05
So this is one of those examples, y'all,
5:11
that you can fix almost anything.
5:15
You just have to take off your thinking caps
5:18
(water running) and think about,
5:22
"Well, how can I fix this? How can I fix that?"
5:26
So we'll see how that works.
5:28
Now this has got this in the refrigerator
5:31
for about 20 minutes now until it congealed some.
5:36
Don't throw this away anymore, okay?
5:38
(Eddie and Paula laughing)
5:40
Okay, y'all, because our unflavored gelatin
5:44
accidentally got thrown out,
5:47
I highly recommend I substitute it
5:50
with strawberry jello, which is gonna make this real sweet.
5:55
So if you don't have unflavored gelatin,
5:58
go get in your car and go get it. (laughs)
6:01
Okay? That's what I would recommend.
6:05
But we gonna move forward on this.
6:10
And I'm gonna fold our,
6:12
the recipe calls for frozen whip topping.
6:15
But you know, I always use my fresh homemade whipped cream.
6:21
So we're just gonna fold that in to our strawberries.
6:29
So this is gonna have to go back in the refrigerator
6:32
and finish setting up.
6:35
But how good does that look? (clears throat) Excuse me.
6:40
And there's our pie crust, that's, whoa.
6:48
Whoa. Look how pretty.
6:52
Look how pretty. (bracelets rattling)
6:57
So in the refrigerator it goes.
7:00
I saved some of my whip topping to dollop
7:04
on my piece of pie that I'm going to eat after this sets.
7:13
So the pie, (bracelets rattling)
7:15
let's talk about the pie.
7:18
I would highly recommend that you follow the recipe exactly
7:22
and use the unflavored gelatin.
7:26
But you know, I mean it did all right,
7:27
but it looks delicious. (bracelets rattling)
7:31
But I can't cut it because Michael and I
7:34
are going out to dinner and I have to be hungry.
7:38
So when we come back we'll have a slice
7:41
of this strawberry pie.
7:44
