- Hey, y'all it's Jeremy Deen here.
0:04
Today, we're doing a drink,
0:06
but we're not just going to do any drink.
0:07
We're gonna do a drink where you gotta cook a little bit.
0:10
I got one cup of water boiling on the stove.
0:14
And what I'm gonna do is make a simple syrup.
0:16
I'm gonna add three big old cups of sugar to this
0:21
and I'm gonna let this dissolve all the way down
0:24
and it's not gonna take very long we're in boiling water.
0:27
And this recipe I want this to simmer for a few minutes,
0:31
so I'm gonna leave it on high
0:33
until we get our sugar dissolved.
0:35
Making drinks is really a fun way to bring your kids,
0:37
your whole family, any flavors that you love
0:41
A homemade cocktail perfect for the adults,
0:45
at the end of the day.
0:46
So many different things that you can do.
0:48
Today y'all we're gonna do a strawberry basil lemonade.
0:53
So I'm gonna cook my simple syrup.
0:56
I'm gonna add strawberries and we're gonna add basil,
1:00
and this is gonna simmer it a very,
1:02
very good kind of, not too high, not too low,
1:06
I want all this cooking out
1:08
and it's gonna take about five minutes.
1:11
You see how my sugar's gotten dissolved
1:13
down into the water now,
1:15
it's not grainy, kind of cloudy.
1:18
That's three cups of sugar in one cup of water.
1:20
This is going be cloudy,
1:22
cause it is super duper sweet.
1:27
But not sweet enough!
1:28
We're gonna add a pound
1:30
of whole and sliced fresh strawberries.
1:36
You could stop right here and put this on top of sponge cake
1:38
with some homemade whipped cream if you wanted to,
1:42
not today, we're gonna add basil
1:45
and this would probably be good on ice cream too
1:47
but I'm not gonna take a chance.
1:49
I've got, I don't know how much basil I have,
1:52
two cups of fresh basil.
1:58
Basil, strawberries, simple syrup.
2:01
I'm gonna let this cook on a slow simmer for about
2:06
We're not gonna rush this cause we're gonna strain this off
2:10
but this is the bottom flavor of our homemade lemonade.
2:16
Y'all stick around. We'll finish her up.
2:18
The bonus for this recipe y'all
2:20
is how this smells in your house, the strawberry
2:22
and the basil smells fantastic.
2:24
If you want to get a muddler and really muddle this down
2:27
you can, you can get every little bit out
2:31
I've slow cooked it for five minutes though.
2:33
I trust that all the flavor is there.
2:35
So I'm gonna strain off all this.
2:39
Got one of mama's old,
2:41
I believe that's a flour sifter.
2:43
I'll have to get this cleaned up before she comes back.
2:46
Let this drip down really good.
2:50
To this y'all we now are gonna add
2:55
two, three and a half quarts,
2:58
three and a half quarts of really cold water.
3:01
- [Theresa] Three and a half cups of water, cups not quarts.
3:03
- Three and a half cups of water.
3:05
Of course Theresa, three and a half quarts,
3:06
that would be ridiculous.
3:09
And then we have two cups of lemon juice.
3:15
This is real lemon juice,
3:16
our meyer lemons aren't in my mama's yard yet.
3:19
So we're having to use that today.
3:22
Meyer lemon tree is fantastic.
3:24
If y'all ever had one, it is so good.
3:26
And now here comes this.
3:30
Ooh, y'all look at that.
3:34
Great day in the morning.
3:38
I'm gonna swhizzle this up a little bit.
3:40
Look how pretty that is.
3:42
Looks like it's color of a sunset.
3:46
- [Theresa] Want me tell you something funny?
3:48
- [Theresa] It was supposed to be three and a half quarts.
3:50
- Three and a half quarts of water!
3:52
- That's what I told Theresa.
3:53
How much do we put in here?
3:55
Three cups y'all, we'll be right back.
4:03
- [Theresa] Here's the extra water
4:06
with a little bit of ice for ya.
4:08
Thanks T. Love you back.
4:10
- [Jeremy] We love each other.
4:13
- [Jeremy] So this is three and a half quarts
4:16
of really cold water.
4:19
Now look, we have gone.
4:22
that you find somewhere in the middle here.
4:27
- [Theresa] I should've let you do it and have your face.
4:30
- Oh, I would've done it
4:31
- [Theresa] With the lemon. That would've been funny.
4:32
- I would've done it.
4:34
Okay y'all this is what we've got for this.
4:36
I'm gonna, I'm gonna make me a quick little drink
4:40
cause I do want to taste it, you know?
4:48
This is part of the fun of cooking for me y'all,
4:51
is getting into the kitchen, having some laughs
4:53
and being with friends, all that stuff you see
4:56
on TV where it's perfect.
4:58
It takes a long time to shoot 30 minutes of TV.
5:01
I'd rather leave it in and have fun.
5:03
Thank you for your help, Theresa.
5:05
So we've got our simple syrup, strawberries,
5:08
and basil, we've strained it.
5:09
It's gone in two cups of fresh lemon juice,
5:13
three and a half quarts of cold water and
5:21
That looks like summer to me y'all.
5:24
Hey T you got one more piece
5:26
of basil or did we cook it all?
5:27
- [Theresa] We cooked it all.
5:28
Like I don't know if that was my fault.
5:30
- [Jeremy] Whenever y'all want to do this
5:33
save a little piece of basil for yourself too
5:38
and put your strawberry right there on the lid.
5:46
God, that is delicious.
5:48
The strawberry is kind of subtle,
5:49
So good Mom. I'll let you have it sip.
5:52
- [Mum] Okay. Thank you.
5:54
- Well, thanks y'all, I'm Jeremy Deen.
5:56
This is a good drink.
5:58
I see y'all around the kitchen.
