- Hey everybody, it's Bobby,
0:01
and today we are going to make sweet potato chips.
0:07
or the people in my family, we love potatoes.
0:11
I love white potatoes.
0:12
I love the little red potatoes, the fingerling potatoes,
0:17
But I think that my favorite is going to be sweet potatoes.
0:21
We eat lots of 'em at my house,
0:23
and we eat them all sorts of ways.
0:26
Sometimes we'll bake 'em in the oven
0:28
and just put a little cinnamon
0:30
and butter on 'em, and they're fantastic that way.
0:34
But sometimes you need to just shake it
0:36
up and do something different.
0:37
So, today, I'm gonna make sweet potato rings,
0:41
and we're going to do them in our Paula Deen air fryer.
0:44
This is an awesome recipe.
0:46
Really simple, really quick.
0:49
And, if you want a nice sort
0:52
of snack for yourself or for your kids.
0:56
These are great for the kids, except for they're spicy.
0:58
We're gonna use a little cayenne pepper, so,
1:01
if you wanna make something for the kids,
1:02
just maybe back off the cayenne a bit, and these are great.
1:06
So it's gonna come out sort of like a potato chip.
1:11
We'll start with some olive oil.
1:13
Couple of tablespoons of olive oil.
1:16
This is fresh, it's never been used.
1:21
- [Producer 1] Would've helped if I'd done that for you.
1:31
Spanish has reminded me
1:32
that we just got back, my family and I, just got back.
1:37
Little salt and pepper, little quarter teaspoon
1:40
of salt and a quarter teaspoon of pepper.
1:43
We just got back from Miami,
1:47
my wife and kids and I, did.
1:50
And a little cayenne.
1:51
Okay, like I said, if you wanted to make this and share
1:53
with your kids, just maybe back off the cayenne just a bit.
2:02
I'm gonna use one teaspoon of cayenne.
2:11
And there's the other half.
2:14
We just got back from Miami,
2:16
my family and I, we went down to Miami
2:19
for my wife's grandmother's 90th birthday.
2:22
We went to Key Biscayne, Florida,
2:25
and we had the most fun.
2:29
My wife is from Venezuela,
2:33
but she moved to America when she was in college.
2:37
She came to America to get her master's degree,
2:41
and then she moved away to Chicago.
2:46
And I said, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
2:48
Let me come to Chicago and get you and bring you back.
2:51
I had met her, and we had dated, and she left,
2:53
and I was just like, oh my god, I can't deal with it.
2:56
So I went and got her from Chicago,
2:58
brought her back to Savannah.
3:01
We got married, she got her citizenship.
3:03
We had these three beautiful children together,
3:07
I don't know why I'm telling you that,
3:08
all just to say that we went to Miami
3:10
for a 90th birthday for her grandmother.
3:13
And, oh, here's the thing.
3:14
I guess, here's what I'm getting at.
3:15
My wife speaks nothing but Spanish to our kids at our house.
3:19
So they're totally bilingual, they speak Spanish perfectly,
3:22
and they speak English perfectly
3:23
'cause they know that dad is speaking English,
3:26
and that mom's speaking Spanish.
3:27
So we went down to Key Biscayne,
3:29
and we were with all of her family.
3:32
Everybody came for this 90th birthday party,
3:34
and they were all speaking Spanish together
3:46
But anybody who's ever been to Miami, Key Biscayne.
3:49
On our way back, we stopped at the Kennedy Space Center.
3:53
If you've never been there, we went,
3:54
took the kids to Kennedy Space Center,
3:56
and we had the most awesome time.
3:58
And this is a great time of year
3:59
to travel, so you can, we drove, too, by the way, so-
4:04
- All the way to Miami. - 500 miles to Miami
4:06
and 500 miles back with-
4:09
- With three four-year-olds in the car.
4:13
So, anyhow, if you get a chance, go to Key Biscayne,
4:16
and also go to the Kennedy Space Center.
4:18
They're fantastic places to visit.
4:20
These sweet potatoes look so good.
4:23
They are covered in our olive oil, in our salt,
4:26
pepper, and cayenne mix.
4:27
And I'm just gonna put 'em right into the air fryer.
4:30
- [Producer 1] Now that is hot, so...
4:32
(air fryer clattering)
4:34
- Just gonna pop 'em right in, and spread 'em out.
4:37
Make sure they got a little bit of space between 'em.
4:40
Ed, if you can see it.
4:43
Just gonna space 'em a little bit.
4:44
(container clattering)
4:46
And what I usually do when I'm cooking stuff
4:48
in the air fryer is, after a few minutes, I'll just pull it
4:51
out and just shake the air fryer a little bit
4:54
and make sure everything spreads some.
4:59
These are going to be delectable,
5:01
and they would be good as a side to,
5:06
I don't know, just about anything.
5:10
Alright, so into the air fryer,
5:12
for, we'll check 'em in about 10 minutes.
5:15
Just wanna make sure they don't burn.
5:16
I'm gonna cook 'em hot.
5:20
It's already on, so we'll set our timer.
5:23
- [Producer 1] Minus it.
5:29
Uh-uh, whoa, uh, whoa.
5:32
- [Producer 1] It's trying to be smart.
5:33
- It's very smart, here we go, 10 minutes.
5:35
So I'll see you in 10 minutes.
5:37
Sweet potato chips are in the air fryer.
5:38
They've been in for about 10, maybe 12 minutes,
5:41
so let's check 'em out and see how they look.
5:45
I had 'em on 400, man, they look fantastic.
5:48
Had 'em on 400 degrees.
5:51
I need a little pair of tongs.
5:57
- [Producer 1] Right on that side.
5:58
- Right on that side.
6:01
There's a plate right here.
6:03
They are just the perfect amount of soft and crispy.
6:11
You like sweet potato chips?
6:16
I'm a potato guy, though.
6:21
They smell really good.
6:23
They're hot, but I'm gonna take one for the team
6:25
and try 'em anyway, for you guys.
6:29
- [Producer 1] I would like 'em with cinnamon sugar.
6:32
- With, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, well-
6:34
- [Producer 1] Instead of this cayenne.
6:37
How about you? - Well-
6:38
- [Producer 2] Could add cinnamon still.
6:39
- [Producer 1] Oh, you could, really, with the cayenne, too.
6:40
- You certainly could, yeah,
6:41
that's what I was just thinking is
6:43
you could dust 'em with a little cinnamon,
6:46
if you wanted to at this point.
6:48
Or you could put a little bit
6:49
of butter on 'em if you wanted to.
6:52
But I think what I'm gonna do is just a little bit
6:55
of coarse salt right on the top of 'em.
7:01
Sweet potato chips with a little cayenne.
7:07
Mm, mm-hmm, so, so good.
7:13
- Getting the cayenne? - Hello, cayenne.
7:14
(laughs) There's a teaspoon to cayenne, too.
7:19
You can dial it back a little bit
7:20
if you want to, but I like spicy.
