0:01
- Hey y'all, I'm Jamie Deen.
0:02
Welcome back to mama's kitchen.
0:03
Today, we're doing a really delicious
0:05
and different French toast recipe.
0:07
This is one that we're gonna do in the oven.
0:09
You know when you're making French toast for a big group,
0:11
and you don't have a pan
0:12
that makes 12 pieces of French toast?
0:14
Well, this is gonna help y'all out
0:16
'cause as big as your sheet pans are,
0:18
that's how much French toast you can make at a time,
0:20
so everybody eats at the same time.
0:23
Today, I'm gonna do six slices
0:24
on one pan, (foil crinkles)
0:25
so it's just enough for me and y'all.
0:28
And we're gonna start with a stick of melted butter.
0:31
And we're gonna go brown sugar in here.
0:34
This is a cup of brown sugar.
0:38
(whisk scraping) the start of our French toast
0:40
is a homemade caramel sauce. (whisk scraping)
0:43
Butter and brown sugar.
0:46
Now, make sure that you line your pan
0:47
because this is the very first layer
0:51
of all of the flavors that we're gonna do here.
0:55
I've got it whipped together.
1:00
We spread it out (whisk scraping)
1:03
in our pan here, that I already have,
1:06
lined with foil. (whisk scraping)
1:08
Or to be perfectly honest,
1:10
Theresa has lined it with foil for me.
1:13
You might have seen our earlier show.
1:14
My son started driving to school,
1:16
(pot clanking) and I haven't been
1:16
the same since. (pot clanking)
1:18
Now, our French toast is kinda
1:21
the traditional that you grew up with,
1:22
but there's a few things in here that's really interesting,
1:24
and I think you'll like 'em.
1:26
We're gonna start with two eggs
1:29
And of course, eggshell for good luck.
1:36
We're gonna add our milk.
1:41
I'm gonna put a teaspoon of vanilla in.
1:44
Liquid vanilla is really good.
1:46
I usually just put a couple of shakes
1:48
of dried vanilla. (vanilla bottle thudding)
1:50
(metal spoon clinking) Oh, not dried vanilla,
1:51
but y'all know what I'm trying to say.
1:54
Cinnamon. I usually use dry cinnamon,
1:56
but vanilla gives it a really good flavor as well.
1:59
We're also gonna add the traditional ground cinnamon.
2:02
(glass bowl clinking)
2:03
This is where it gets a little weird.
2:06
A squeeze of lemon juice (lemon juice dripping)
2:10
and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
2:13
Oops! Wow. (plastic lid snapping)
2:14
That's gonna be... (Jamie clears throat)
2:16
That was a little bit more than a pinch.
2:18
So I'm gonna whip (mixture splashing)
2:20
Now, the secret, and I know, Lord knows,
2:23
we are all busy in the mornings when we're making breakfast.
2:26
What you want to do is
2:27
let your bread soak. (mixture splashing)
2:29
You don't want to dredge it through
2:31
(fork clinking) for just one quick second.
2:33
You want this bread (fork clinking)
2:34
to really soak it up, and keep it really moist,
2:38
and just delicious all the way through.
2:40
So I'm gonna submerge a couple of these,
2:43
and I'm not gonna take it out super quick.
2:45
I'd like about, maybe, 20 seconds or so.
2:53
and then I'm gonna line 'em right here.
2:55
(exhaust fan blowing)
3:01
And this is enough mixture to serve 12 pieces,
3:05
If you'd like to only do six
3:06
or you wanna cut this recipe in half,
3:09
this is a really easy recipe (mixture glugs)
3:15
My mouth is just watering off the chain this morning.
3:18
I can't really speak.
3:21
Ooh, and that brown sugar and that butter down there
3:24
is gonna harden up on this French toast.
3:26
I bet you it's gonna be the best French toast
3:28
we ever had. (foil crinkles)
3:30
See how easy that is? (foil crinkles and squeaks)
3:32
So I'm gonna pop this into the oven
3:34
for about 25 or 30 minutes and let this cook through.
3:36
Y'all stick around. Coming up, sheet pan French toast!
3:40
Hey y'all, we're back with our French toast.
3:42
I didn't tell y'all this, my bad.
3:44
(exhaust fan whirring) Halfway through
3:48
you're going to flip this French toast.
3:51
So we're gonna get it pulled up,
3:53
but take care of don't mess up your stuff.
3:56
- [Paula Deen] Oh, I love me some French toasties!
3:58
- [Jamie] Our butter and brown sugar...
4:00
Well, stick around, Mom.
4:01
You're gonna love this. (foil crinkling)
4:02
So halfway through the baking,
4:04
y'all take the time... (foil crinkling)
4:06
And I'm not gonna be able to do it as good
4:07
because, now, here comes my mama,
4:09
and I'm trying to do it on TV.
4:10
(Paula laughs) (Jamie's lips smack)
4:11
- No! - Y'all trust me,
4:12
I'm gonna be here long enough to flip all six of these over.
4:14
And then, they're gonna move back in the oven
4:16
to finish cooking. 20 more minutes
4:17
once you flip 'em, y'all! (foil crinkling)
4:19
- [Paula Deen] Looks delicious!
4:21
- Ooh, it's gonna be good too.
4:23
So y'all look at here. (french toast sizzling)
4:26
Our French toast (plastic thudding)
4:32
moist, I promise you.
4:34
And now, here's the decision that you have to make.
4:37
When you get to this point,
4:39
are you satisfied with brown sugar,
4:42
(plastic clanking) - [Paula Deen] Whoops!
4:43
- and cinnamon, and butter,
4:47
(plastic clanking) and all the richness?
4:52
you gonna jump on the Jamie train,
4:54
and think it's missing
4:56
one thing. Look how pretty
4:58
(dish scraping) that underside is.
4:59
I should have flipped 'em all over.
5:01
(plastic clanking) Just a little,
5:04
little bit of sugar! (Paula chuckles)
5:07
But I'm really only doing that
5:09
because I want 'em to look pretty.
5:11
And then, if you got some strawberries or something...
5:13
I love blueberries here too.
5:15
Let's pop you some blueberries
5:16
next to it. (dish scraping)
5:18
You can put your favorite syrup on there.
5:20
And even if you're wrong, and don't use cane syrup,
5:23
you can use anything you want. (Theresa laughing)
5:25
- [Paula Deen] You know, I've used nothing
5:26
but sugar-free syrup, and it's so good!
5:29
- Will somebody give a feather for Paula Deen's cap?
5:31
She uses sugar-free syrup.
5:32
I'll take the 10-times cane syrup, please!
5:35
This is delicious, y'all.
5:38
Mm! I'm gonna eat it right now.
5:40
Thanks for tuning in!
5:42
I'll see y'all around mama's kitchen.
5:44
You ready to eat, mama?
5:45
- [Paula Deen] Yes! - Let's eat!
