- Y'all know I just do love getting mail from y'all.
0:04
I feel like it keeps me in contact
0:06
with the real people out there.
0:08
And I received a letter, they sent it to The Lady & Sons
0:11
so if you send anything to the restaurant
0:14
just keep in mind that it may take
0:18
a little longer to get in my hands.
0:22
Because they stay pretty busy down there
0:24
and they'll forget to pass it on to me.
0:27
But a friend and viewer named Allen Sharpe.
0:32
Who lives in Kansas City, Missouri.
0:36
Sent me a recipe and it was one
0:39
that he had found in a cookbook.
0:41
But he liked the madness behind the method.
0:49
But he wanted to change up the madness just a little bit.
0:53
And so he truly really changed this recipe.
0:56
But it's just called rice casserole and it's yellow rice.
0:59
And we cook a three ounce package of yellow rice
1:03
with a half a stick of butter according to the directions.
1:08
(laughs) And the other ingredients is all Allen's idea.
1:13
So I'm gonna take our rice.
1:16
And put it in a bowl.
1:21
And this is nice and moist.
1:23
That half a stick of butter just really did it nicely.
1:27
And now I'm gonna add one can of petite.
1:35
This looks kinda like a Mexican rice to me.
1:41
I don't know, maybe not.
1:43
There's no onions or jalapenos in it.
1:45
And I am putting in one can of drained green beans.
1:52
So you got your starch and a vegetable all mixed together.
2:00
Okay, Allen, and then you said that the original
2:04
recipe that you found in the cookbook,
2:06
I think it said a can of, what did it say?
2:11
Can of chicken noodle soup, but we're using,
2:14
according to Allen he liked the cream of onion soup with it.
2:20
We do have onions don't we?
2:34
Sometimes it can be so difficult to get.
2:37
All the stuff out of those cans.
2:42
So basically everything is done.
2:46
So I think Allen's intentions were to just
2:49
put this in the oven and bake it until it's hot.
2:54
Now he didn't say, the original recipe
2:58
that he used to adapt this recipe,
3:04
the original says cover with cheddar cheese on top,
3:08
but I don't know if Allen did that or not.
3:11
So we'll make a judgment call at the end.
3:16
All right, so I'm gonna pour this in.
3:20
My casserole dish and this is not a 13 by nine.
3:24
It's like one step under.
3:28
Like one step under a 13 by nine.
3:44
An easy quick side dish.
3:48
That will go with many many things won't it, Allen?
3:52
I mean chicken, pork.
3:54
- [Assistant] What temperature and for how long?
3:56
- Let's see, I think it's probably 350.
3:59
Which is the average.
4:00
Yes, 350 for 30 minutes.
4:03
- [Assistant] Perfect.
4:04
- And it makes six to eight servings.
4:08
So we gonna be checking you out,
4:10
Allen, in about 20 minutes, honey.
4:15
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe with me.
4:23
I would like to think that maybe children would like this.
4:27
You know, it's so hard to get kids
4:28
to eat their vegetables and all that stuff.
4:31
Sometimes we have to try to hide them.
4:33
In what we're cooking.
4:35
Oh gosh, it looks delicious though.
4:43
- [Cameraman] It almost looks like you put cheese on top.
4:49
- This is really good, Allen.
4:51
And it would make such a nice side dish.
4:53
A quick easy side dish for, you know,
4:56
whatever you're planning for supper.
5:00
And Allen also sent me another recipe.
5:07
And the recipe is for life.
5:10
"Cheerfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness,
5:14
"love, sympathy, charity and spirit.
5:19
"Take a large quart of cheerfulness
5:22
"and let simmer without stopping.
5:24
"Put with it a brimming basin full of kindness.
5:28
"Then add a full measure of thought for other people.
5:32
"Mix with this a heaping tablespoon of sympathy.
5:36
"Flavor with the essence of charity.
5:39
"Stir well together and carefully
5:41
"strain off the grains of selfishness.
5:44
"Let the whole be served with love,
5:48
"sauce and fruit of the spirit."
5:52
That's a wonderful recipe, Allen.
5:55
And it's one of those recipes that anybody can make.
6:02
Love and best dishes and thanks so so much, Allen.
