- Y'all, this video is questions and answers
0:06
and excuse the noise.
0:09
The yard people are here blowing off the driveways
0:14
so I hope it doesn't overpower us
0:17
and the the water flowing but I love that water sound.
0:21
Love it.
0:22
So these questions
0:26
came from people that come into the Paula Deen store.
0:30
They always are asking the ladies
0:33
this or that, this or that.
0:36
So they can pretty much guess what the answer would be
0:40
but they would rather me answer 'em myself.
0:45
So that's what I'm fixing to try to do.
0:47
Theresa is gonna tell me the questions that they're asking
0:52
and hopefully I'll have an answer.
0:55
- [Theresa] There are kind of some funny questions so.
0:56
- Oh, some funny questions.
0:57
- [Theresa] So roll with them, mhm.
0:58
The first, the number one question
1:01
that they ask all of the girls there,
1:03
they say to them, "do you know Paula?"
1:05
So I guess they don't know,
1:06
people don't really know if you come into the store I guess.
1:09
- "Do you know Paula?"
1:12
Like I'm some character that lives in a little place
1:17
and only comes out?
1:19
Yeah, I'm in the store, I'm in the restaurant,
1:23
certainly not every day but I've been there a lot lately
1:29
because Jamie took a portion of space
1:32
that we really weren't using
1:34
and he opened a little corner that he calls The Chicken Box.
1:39
So for locals that don't wanna come in
1:41
and experience the whole deal,
1:47
you can come into The Chicken Box
1:52
and you can get a little bit of food
1:54
or you can get a lot of food.
1:56
It's up to you.
1:57
And Jamie has sandwiches available and salads
2:02
and then whatever we're cooking that day in the hot line.
2:07
So in fact, I'm going back there tomorrow, y'all.
2:12
- [Theresa] This is the second most asked question.
2:15
- Okay.
2:15
- [Theresa] "Are you and Michael still together?"
2:19
- As far as I know, we are.
2:22
He still crawls in our bed at night so.
2:26
- [Theresa] And then they ask-
2:26
- Yes, we're still together.
2:27
- [Theresa] "How long?"
2:30
- Well, we married in 2004
2:33
so next year we'll celebrate our 20th.
2:36
So we just celebrated our 19th
2:39
and I can't hardly believe it.
2:41
I cannot believe it.
2:44
If I can hang in there seven more years,
2:47
it will have matched the time
2:49
that I was married to my children's father, to Jimmy.
2:52
We were married 27 years.
2:56
So yes, we're still together but Michael had gotten
3:00
where he wasn't traveling with me a lot
3:03
because the river had, his job had gotten so demanding
3:08
and older people were retiring
3:12
which they needed Michael more and so quite often,
3:20
plus, his knees and his hips are in bad shape
3:26
but he just is now recuperated from a hip transplant,
3:31
a new hip and now he's got the knees
3:35
and then hopefully I'll have the bionic man.
3:40
- [Theresa] You kind of answered this
3:42
but this is another question they get a lot.
3:44
"Are you involved in the day-to-day
3:46
runnings of the restaurant?"
3:47
I mean, are you still really active
3:48
in decision making in the restaurants?
3:52
- Not really.
3:54
I'm not involved with the day-to-day running
3:57
but I do try to keep up with,
4:01
to make sure nobody's making decisions
4:04
that I would not bless
4:07
but that's really Jamie's, Jamie's role.
4:10
- [Theresa] "How many grandchildren?"
4:12
- I have as y'all know
4:14
that have ever listened to this YouTube channel,
4:17
I have 11 grandchildren
4:22
- [Theresa] A lot.
4:23
This is a question I even get asked.
4:26
"Do you live in Savannah or New York?"
4:29
- I could never live in New York.
4:31
I'm good for about two or three day visits
4:35
and then I'm ready to get back in the south
4:38
where the pace is a little bit slower
4:44
and the folks talk a little bit slower.
4:50
I'm still in Savannah, y'all.
4:52
I moved here, my children's father moved us here in 1987.
4:58
I was here two years before I started The Bag Lady
5:03
- [Theresa] Leading into "how many restaurants do you have?"
5:07
- Okay, how many restaurants do we have?
5:10
I reopened with a partner, Uncle Bubba's
5:16
and it was Paula Deen's Creek House
5:19
because it sits on a creek but it just wasn't the same.
5:29
I knew it would never be the same again
5:32
with Uncle Bubba not being there.
5:34
I hear when I go off on trips,
5:36
"I met your brother and he was the sweetest thing.
5:39
I had my picture made with him
5:41
and he just had the best personality and was so kind"
5:48
and that's the way I want people to remember him
5:51
because that's what he was.
5:54
- [Theresa] So we just have The Lady & Sons in Savannah.
5:56
- Yes, The Lady & Sons in Savannah who is our mothership.
6:01
That's the mothership.
6:02
That's where everything really started
6:06
when we got moved downtown in 1996.
6:09
January the eighth, 1996,
6:12
downtown was our first day in the historic district
6:17
and we have never looked back.
6:19
People were so worried about me.
6:22
The local people who is what I fed
6:25
when we were on the south side, they were so concerned.
6:28
They said, "Paula, you are making a mistake.
6:30
Please don't do that."
6:32
And I said, well, I have to.
6:33
I got a burning in my gut
6:35
and I feel like that's where we belong
6:37
and sure enough, that was where we belonged
6:40
and there was maybe four or five restaurants
6:43
downtown at that time.
6:45
Now there are what, 1000?
6:46
- [Theresa] It feels like it.
6:48
- I think it's somewhere around 1000.
6:50
Do you know, Eddie?
6:51
- [Eddie] I have no idea.
6:53
- We'll have to Google that one then.
6:54
- [Theresa] We will have to.
6:55
- Because some I've never heard, I've never been in but-
7:01
- [Theresa] Where are you Paula Deen Family Kitchens?
7:03
- And the others, Paula Deen Family Kitchen.
7:07
One of 'em is in Foley, Alabama
7:09
and it's down there in the panhandle of Florida,
7:13
right above the panhandle
7:15
and it's in a recreational park called OWA
7:21
and I believe it's owned by an Indian tribe
7:25
and it's really got such potential.
7:30
It's kinda like a little Disney World
7:34
and as soon as they get more things coming in,
7:36
of course the pandemic I'm sure hurt them some too
7:41
but they've got great attractions like the water park
7:45
and of course our restaurant, Paula Deen's Family Kitchen,
7:51
a nice hotel and just all kind of events
7:56
and I'll go up and over.
8:01
The next one would be Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
8:05
and it's a great restaurant.
8:12
Got a nice big store.
8:16
All right and then let's go on up and over
8:20
to Nashville, Tennessee.
8:24
I think that would be next.
8:25
- [Eddie] Kitchen Foley, Nashville.
8:27
- Uh huh, Nashville, Tennessee
8:29
which is located by the Opryland Hotel,
8:35
that huge, huge hotel and we're right there kind of,
8:44
kinda between them and the mall.
8:48
There's a big mall that you look out our door at
8:52
and it's a beautiful location, beautiful
8:57
and I'm so proud of that one
8:58
and I've been up there two or three times in the last month.
9:03
The next one would be Pigeon Forge.
9:06
Now, Pigeon Forge is the home
9:09
of the very first Paula Deen Family Kitchen
9:14
and my partner Bob McManus is,
9:21
to me, he's right up there with a genius
9:23
on opening restaurants.
9:25
He knows, he knows how to open a restaurant,
9:30
he knows how to staff it with the best staff
9:33
and my hat is just off to this man
9:38
and Pigeon Forge will always,
9:42
it's located on the island that Bob himself developed.
9:47
It's like a little-
9:50
- [Theresa] It's really like a Disney World.
9:52
- Uh huh, it's like a small little Disney World.
9:55
Wonderful rides and wonderful food
9:59
and okay, they got two blowers going now.
10:04
And let's see.
10:07
All right, we've got Nashville, Tennessee and Pigeon Forge,
10:11
home of two of the Paula Deen Family Kitchens
10:15
and then we're gonna move on over to kind of the Midwest
10:20
which is Branson, Missouri.
10:23
I love, love that Family Kitchen there.
10:28
It's probably the smaller of all the stores
10:32
but it's a beautiful store.
10:34
They've got so many things and here is the wonderful part
10:38
about Paula Deen's Family Kitchen
10:41
as I get to hop around and visit all of the restaurants.
10:47
When I have my meal, I cannot tell the difference
10:53
from one restaurant to the other.
10:56
The consistency and the training is unbelievable
11:02
which is what Bob is so, so good at and that's wonderful.
11:08
If I was blindfolded,
11:09
I wouldn't be able to tell you where I was
11:12
because the food is so spot on in every place.
11:15
- [Theresa] Okay, so this is the funniest question to me
11:19
and this is our last question for today.
11:20
We may have more down the road but they wanna know-
11:25
- Hit me with your best shot, girl.
11:26
- [Theresa] "Do you sound the same in person
11:30
as you do on the shows?"
11:31
So basically, do you make up your accent?
11:38
- How do I sound to y'all right now 'cause this is me.
11:42
This is what I sound like.
11:46
In fact, I get real tickled.
11:49
I'll go out with no hair and no makeup and Lord have mercy.
11:52
I don't want nobody to recognize me
11:55
'cause I look like the rat
11:58
and I'll forget and I'll talk or I'll laugh
12:04
and people will turn around,
12:06
"I know that voice and I know that laugh.
12:09
Where is she?"
12:12
So as long as I keep my mouth shut,
12:15
I can get by looking like Ned in the first reader, y'all
12:20
but no, this is me.
12:23
It's all me.
12:25
So until the next set of questions comes in,
12:29
I'm sending y'all Love and Best Dishes now and forever.
12:37
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
