0:00
- I wanna share with y'all a letter that I got
0:06
that was just the sweetest, sweetest, most thoughtful thing.
0:10
So,
0:14
it starts off, "My name is Derek Cook.
0:17
I'm 32 years old and I live in Newburgh, New York."
0:23
And then in parenthesis, "I'm what you may call a Yankee."
0:28
You're a Yankee doodle dandy.
0:31
Well, Derek says he started watching my show years ago
0:34
on that network and he said he's been watching my videos
0:39
since 2020 when I started shooting 'em
0:42
and he said it just brings up so many memories
0:45
of him and his grandmother
0:47
and you would not believe how often I hear that.
0:52
A lot of young people, you know, 18 to 30 years old,
0:58
or 12, actually 12 to 30 years old
1:01
will come to my book signings and they say,
1:04
"I watched you every day along with my grandmother."
1:10
And that just thrills me.
1:12
That just thrills me that these children spent quality time
1:15
with their grandmother.
1:17
And so Derek goes on to say, "I call her MomMom.
1:21
And almost every Saturday we would cook
1:23
a lot of your recipes.
1:25
We would especially make the shrimp and scallop lasagna."
1:28
And it's so good.
1:29
We used to serve that on the buffet at the restaurant.
1:32
"I would like to share a recipe
1:33
with you that my grandmother would make
1:35
and it is called a 'Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken Pot Pie.'
1:40
Here is the recipe."
1:43
Derek, that is so sweet of you
1:46
and he knew that I probably couldn't find the noodles
1:50
that his grandmother used,
1:52
so he sent me the noodles that I need
1:57
and he told me that I could find them on Amazon.
2:03
So, I'll be ordering some noodles from Amazon.
2:07
So, let's see, one whole chicken, precut,
2:12
or we just cooked the whole chicken so,
2:17
and he likes to use chicken thighs too.
2:20
Four to five red potatoes,
2:23
one bag of Pennsylvania Dutch Egg Noodles,
2:25
or any square noodle.
2:26
"I included them in the package I sent.
2:29
You can find the type I sent you on Amazon."
2:32
Salt and pepper to taste.
2:34
So you cook your chicken in a large stock pot
2:39
and you cover the chicken with water and you bring it
2:42
almost to a boil and then turn the heat down to simmer.
2:46
And Derek said to simmer it for one and a half hours.
2:50
That's one hour and 30 minutes.
2:53
And then he said, "Take the chicken pieces
2:54
out of the pot with a slotted spoon
2:57
and put the pieces into a bowl and let it cool.
3:00
Do not dump the water 'cause that's your good old stock.
3:05
Bring the potatoes to a boil and then turn down the heat
3:09
and let them simmer for about 30 minutes."
3:11
Well, these are really small potatoes,
3:14
so they won't take quite that long.
3:17
"And before the 30 minutes are up,
3:19
check the potatoes to see if they are tender.
3:22
Add the noodles to the pot and cook them for 20 minutes.
3:26
Before the noodles are done cooking,
3:28
add the chicken back to the pot,
3:30
season it with soft and pepper if needed."
3:33
And Derek goes onto say, "Thank you, Paula,
3:37
for taking the time to read this and thank you
3:40
for taking the time to cook my Grandmama's, MomMom,
3:44
Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken Pop Pie."
3:48
Derek, this letter just touched me.
3:53
I couldn't even tell you how much it touched me
3:56
for you to take the time and share some of your memories
3:59
with me and with others and even send me the noodles
4:04
so you know I had to cook it.
4:08
And I can't wait to taste it.
4:10
What a sweet, sweet letter.
4:12
Okay, y'all, our chicken is out
4:15
and it's been taken off the bone.
4:18
Now I'm gonna add some beautiful potatoes
4:21
and let them cook for a minute.
4:24
It called for like four to five potatoes
4:26
so you can put as many or as few as you want.
4:31
All right, so Eddie, here we go.
4:35
I turned it back to high.
4:39
Gonna get that to boiling
4:42
and then we'll cut it down and look at our chicken.
4:47
Our chicken looks so, so good.
4:53
You know what this piece is called?
4:55
Do you know what it is, Eddie?
4:57
- [Eddie] No.
4:58
- This is a plug from the back of the chicken
5:02
and it's called the oyster.
5:05
The chicken oyster.
5:08
And it's so good, it's so tender.
5:11
And if you're picking a chicken and you
5:16
have the back to it, you'll see that plug of oyster.
5:21
Okay, come on taters, let's boil.
5:24
Okay, I think our potatoes are tender now.
5:32
I can poke one with a fork.
5:34
They need a few more minutes.
5:39
Like I said, it won't take 'em too long.
5:42
I'm gonna give 'em a few more minutes.
5:44
No I'm not, I think they're done enough,
5:46
Eddie, by the time the noodles cook in 20 minutes,
5:49
those potatoes are gonna be done.
5:51
So in goes Mrs. Miller's Extra Wide Old Fashioned Noodles.
5:59
- They look good. - Don't they look delicious?
6:02
Gonna throw in just a handful of fresh parsley
6:07
to just give it a little color.
6:11
Come on with those
6:13
(spoon tapping)
6:14
wonderful potatoes.
6:17
And now I'm just gonna,
6:21
I don't know if I'll use all the chicken,
6:23
but because we cooked a whole chicken, so.
6:33
I think this is more than
6:40
what some thighs would be.
6:43
You know what I'm talking about, Eddie?
6:44
- [Eddie] Yes.
6:46
- So.
6:51
Hey Derek, it's looking good.
6:53
I'm just gonna,
6:57
gonna put the lid back on this.
6:59
Ouch.
7:01
That means fire and fire is hot, Paula.
7:06
All right, so I'm gonna put the lid back on this and
7:09
(spoon tapping)
7:13
oops, the lid's still hot
7:16
and just let that meat heat back up
7:18
and then it's gonna be ready to eat.
7:21
But I have to tell you, Derek,
7:22
you call this your grandma MomMom's Chicken Pot Pie,
7:27
to me it resembles what we know as chicken and dumplings
7:31
a lot, so it's gonna be good.
7:35
I can't wait to taste it.
7:37
Okay, Derek.
7:39
(spoon tapping)
7:41
Let me move this up here so you can see it.
7:50
It's coming up.
7:54
Now, I don't know if you need more stock in it, Derek,
7:58
I just don't know 'cause, you know,
8:01
you say cover the chicken.
8:04
Now, I wouldn't be me, Derek,
8:09
if I didn't do one little thing different,
8:13
or add one little thing different.
8:16
So I'm gonna add a little butter
8:20
'cause I'm like my noodles with butter.
8:24
So y'all certainly don't have to do this.
8:26
Derek didn't tell me to do it.
8:28
The devil told me to do it.
8:30
(Paula laughing)
8:31
You know, let me share, wait.
8:35
I just, I'll be right back, y'all, don't go anywhere.
8:38
Ain't Peggy gave this to me years ago
8:42
and somebody did this in 1976
8:48
and I don't know, Aunt Peggy may have bought it
8:51
at a yard sale 'cause you know she's a yard sale nut, so.
8:57
Uh-oh, uh-oh, get back up there.
9:01
So sometimes the devil makes me do stuff, but you know what?
9:05
(picture crashes)
9:06
Forget it. (Eddie laughs)
9:07
Devil don't live in this house.
9:10
Oh.
9:16
What was I gonna say? - Looks good.
9:17
I don't know, I'm ready to eat though.
9:19
- I know. - That looks so good.
9:20
(Paula laughing)
9:21
That looks like comfort food.
9:23
- [Paula] It does look like comfort food.
9:24
I would say Yankee comfort food, wouldn't you, Eddie?
9:28
- [Eddie] I will.
9:29
- [Paula] This looks like something that would have been
9:32
in y'all's kitchen, right?
9:34
Something like it.
9:36
- [Eddie] Something, I know, we've never made anything
9:38
quite like that.
9:38
I mean this looks like dumplings to me.
9:40
- I know. - I can't wait to try.
9:41
- It looks like chicken and dumplings.
9:44
So I'm gonna reach in there and get me some dumplings
9:48
and a little piece of that butter.
9:50
Oh, so I know what I was gonna say.
9:52
Just a tiny piece of butter.
9:55
You know, people ask me all the time,
9:58
"Paula, you're not still eating butter, are ya?"
10:01
I said, "Absolutely, I will always eat butter."
10:04
You know it's that other one.
10:07
God made the butter.
10:08
Well, God made the cow and the cow made the butter,
10:11
but that other one out there,
10:14
that's manmade so I do like to stick with what God made.
10:20
So look at that.
10:24
Steamy hot.
10:28
And what a bonus.
10:31
Potato and pasta all in one bite.
10:35
I might be in heaven, Derek.
10:42
It looks so good.
10:44
I mean this is so comforting-looking, Eddie,
10:46
just looking in that pot.
10:50
Makes you say, "Ooh, Mama's somewhere close by."
11:10
The dumplings kind of eat like a homemade pasta to me.
11:18
They're so good.
11:22
Derek, I thank you so much.
11:24
Eddie is tortured
11:28
'cause he's hungry.
11:33
So I'm gonna sign off and tell y'all love and best dishes
11:36
and dip up Eddie a bowl.
11:37
(Paula laughing)
