- So come in, y'all, to
0:02
(door slams)
0:03
what 17 years ago,
0:05
we called this our forever home.
0:07
And then five years later,
0:10
I found myself down at Wilmington Island,
0:13
on this five-acre lot that was like a compound.
0:16
And I said, "Oh, my goodness."
0:19
But Michael and I both agreed
0:20
that we would never sell this property,
0:23
because we were already,
0:24
I was already in my 60s when we built Riverbend,
0:30
and Michael was just nine years behind me.
0:33
So, we were getting to that age where,
0:37
at some point,
0:38
we're gonna wanna downsize.
0:40
So, we always agreed that if that happened,
0:44
we would come back to this house,
0:46
that we built when we married.
0:49
And, you know, I still love it so.
0:52
And after we started working on it,
0:56
all four of our children,
0:58
Michael's daughter and son,
0:59
and my two sons, and,
1:02
Corrie, did you say the same thing?
1:06
Corrie, my niece is here.
1:08
They all said to us,
1:09
"Well, we always liked Dogwood better than Riverbend."
1:13
So, we are back here,
1:15
and all of our children are so excited.
1:18
So, this is shiplap board,
1:21
and we did this when we built the house.
1:24
I just love it.
1:25
It makes it look vintage.
1:28
It makes it look like what this is, it's a cottage.
1:36
And I want it to wrap its arms around you when you come in,
1:40
and I want it to hug you,
1:43
and here's the little half bath down here,
1:46
and we brought in a pop o' color,
1:51
and that is
1:54
what the team calls, "Paula Deen green."
1:59
When we started getting our...
2:04
- [Eddie] Your brand (laughs).
2:05
- Yeah.
2:06
Yeah.
2:07
When we were settling in on what our brand was gonna to be.
2:09
Thank you. Thank you, Eddie.
2:12
This was the green that we selected.
2:15
So, that's the name of it.
2:17
And this is shiplap too,
2:22
also in here, in the ceiling.
2:25
Now I want y'all to pay attention to these gorgeous doors.
2:29
These are antique doors.
2:31
I can't remember where they came out of.
2:34
I don't know if it was a place here in Savannah,
2:37
but we had a bedroom door that went out onto a patio,
2:43
and I bought these beautiful doors,
2:47
for that door.
2:50
And I fell in love with 'em,
2:56
2:57
and I still just adore them.
3:00
- [Eddie] And they would have been
3:02
like a storm door for one of the townhouses downtown,
3:05
probably- - Probably.
3:06
Probably.
3:07
I say there would be another door behind it.
3:10
But you can lock it.
3:12
And I love, I love,
3:15
we had this done to the door.
3:20
This was on the inside in our bedroom.
3:25
And we had inlaid gold put on it. Christie.
3:30
Did you ever know Christie?
3:31
- No.
3:32
- Christie did that for us.
3:34
And this side was left natural,
3:37
which I'm so glad,
3:38
because Eddie and I are just gonna rub this down with a wax,
3:44
and so we'll have the two different finishes.
3:47
And this is our living room,
3:51
and pay attention to all the chandeliers.
3:55
I think they just did a fabulous job on 'em.
3:59
And what's the company name?
4:04
- [Eddie] The woman's name is Becky Brackett,
4:05
with The Light Post.
4:07
- The Light Post- - In Bluffton.
4:09
- Yes, in Bluffton, South Carolina,
4:11
just over the bridge here.
4:13
And she and her team are very, very talented.
4:17
So, for those of y'all that have followed me for years,
4:22
you know that our living room,
4:26
came to maybe right here, Eddie.
4:29
- [Eddie] Ah, yeah, right to the edge of this doorway.
4:34
- Over there.
4:35
So, right here.
4:36
- [Eddie] And then this would have been the back porch.
4:37
- Yeah.
4:38
This was the back porch.
4:39
And I said, "If the family keeps growing,
4:43
I've got to have a way to seat 21 or 22 people
4:49
for a meal."
4:50
So, we knocked those walls down.
4:55
And if you remember,
4:56
we had three big double doors,
4:59
and we decided we liked it narrowed down
5:02
to just one double door.
5:05
And our windows,
5:10
the sun sets in the west,
5:12
and the house, the front of the house,
5:15
which, this is called the front,
5:19
the sun is brutal.
5:21
Brutal.
5:23
So,
5:24
(shades rasping)
5:26
we had blackout shades put in.
5:31
And these shades go all the way to the tip-top, y'all.
5:34
But Eddie just set 'em right here,
5:36
because that's as high as I can reach (laughs).
5:39
So, I'm gonna have to find me a stool, or something.
5:43
So, we came back in here with the shiplap,
5:47
and
5:50
just recovering this part of the porch,
5:55
has made this room nice, nice, and cozy.
5:58
In Riverbend,
6:02
there was decorators and people working on my house,
6:05
and
6:08
I got so tired of looking at my own pictures (laughs),
6:12
I said, "If I ever, ever move back to Dogwood,
6:18
nothing's going up but my grandchildren's pictures."
6:22
But it was all that work, you know.
6:25
We were deep in work when we built Riverbend.
6:28
But this hallway is gonna be our photo gallery
6:32
for our grandchildren,
6:36
because I do have 11.
6:37
And this is just a few of the photographs I have.
6:43
(picture frames clunking)
6:47
Oh, let's see what's in here.
6:49
Oh.
6:50
I took this picture of Olivia,
6:54
I meant, of-
6:55
- [Eddie] No.
6:55
- Amelia.
6:56
This is Amelia.
6:58
And this is when she was like a really young baby.
7:02
And she would purse those lips.
7:06
And I had my phone in my hand,
7:08
and I just,
7:10
by chance I caught her in the middle of that pout (laughs).
7:16
So, I just adore, adore coming in here
7:20
and looking at them every day.
7:21
And y'all wanna hear something funny?
7:22
(laughs)
7:25
(picture frames clunking)
7:26
Oh, crap.
7:27
This is so Paula (laughs).
7:32
I've just been sending pictures to Eddie,
7:37
and say,
7:38
"Wall. I want this one for the wall."
7:42
And he sent off to Smallwoods,
7:45
and they do a great job, and a very fair price.
7:50
So, I saw this picture, and I said,
7:52
"Oh, look at that. That's so cute."
7:56
Nobody knows who it is! (laughs)
8:01
I thought it was Davis.
8:05
But Brooke said, "No, we've never had a hat like that."
8:10
Corrie was here,
8:12
and I said, "Would by chance that be Sullivan?"
8:16
She said, "No."
8:20
Contacted Michelle, "Is this one of your babies?"
8:23
"No. I don't know who that is."
8:26
So, instead of having 11 grandchildren,
8:29
I guess I have 12 (laughs).
8:32
The Unknown (laughs).
8:35
So, this is my grandchildren gallery.
8:39
Now, when we built Riverbend,
8:42
I had the neatest closet and bathroom.
8:48
I lived in my bathroom.
8:49
That sounds funny,
8:50
but when I had meetings,
8:52
I'd have it in my bathroom (laughs).
8:56
So, I loved my bathroom and my closet at Riverbend.
9:01
So, I tried my best to duplicate it here.
9:05
So,
9:09
this is our new closet.
9:11
The closet that was put in here originally,
9:14
I bet I couldn't hang
9:18
probably 25 coat hangers
9:22
on the racks.
9:23
It was just awful.
9:24
And they were all the way up to the ceiling.
9:25
You couldn't reach 'em.
9:26
So, that dry cleaner's rack is wonderful.
9:33
Y'all, when you have high ceilings,
9:35
and it's like wasted space,
9:38
well, you can recapture that space
9:41
by putting in a dry cleaner's rack.
9:44
And,
9:47
this is gonna be our chest of drawers in here.
9:52
And it was designed
9:55
so that I would have a place to put my jewelry.
10:01
And I love, I love that.
10:04
And these are wonderful drawers.
10:06
And I love the pulls that we selected.
10:10
(drawer scrapes)
10:12
They're easy
10:15
to get at 'em.
10:16
And so,
10:19
I've always said,
10:21
"I have never undressed and dressed in my kitchen" (laughs),
10:26
which is where so many laundry rooms are.
10:29
I said,
10:30
"I want my laundry room in my closet,
10:33
or at least near my closet."
10:36
So (laughs),
10:38
I mean (laughs),
10:41
it's gonna be so handy.
10:43
And I did not have this at Riverbend,
10:47
so, this is an added bonus for me,
10:51
to have this convenience.
10:53
What is that, Eddie?
10:55
Oh, it's the lights- - Those are the lights.
10:56
Yes.
10:57
- I'm gonna have to
10:59
try to figure out where all the light switches are,
11:03
but we've got
11:08
a lot of cabinet space,
11:13
and storage.
11:15
And all these shelves are adjustable, right, Eddie?
11:17
- [Eddie] Hm-hmm.
11:18
- Which is great.
11:20
And we've got a lotta open spaces,
11:25
like this,
11:26
which Michael and I are gonna have to get used to,
11:28
because I think we're gonna need to fold
11:30
our T-shirts and things rather than hanging 'em up.
11:34
Michael's got more shirts, y'all,
11:36
than a show dog can jump over.
11:38
I'm not kidding.
11:39
He's like a clothes horse (laughs).
11:43
He has clothes from fat,
11:47
real fat clothes,
11:49
to just fat clothes.
11:52
And then to little fat clothes (laughs).
11:55
I mean, he's got every size, Eddie.
11:58
Every size.
11:59
What is this?
12:01
- [Eddie] Oh, that's the bar that goes in the bathroom.
12:03
- Oh, oh, oh.
12:04
My handicap bar (laughs).
12:08
So,
12:11
believe it or not,
12:12
Michael's shoes are gonna be able to fill this up.
12:15
Isn't it, Eddie?
12:17
That man knows he's got some shoes.
12:22
So, I'm just thrilled with the closet.
12:24
And I hope that if y'all are building and remodeling,
12:28
that you see something that could work for you,
12:34
because this is truly,
12:38
our last stop
12:41
before the last, last stop (laughs).
12:47
So, you know, I want it to be what I want.
12:52
What makes me happy to live in,
12:55
and so...
12:59
This was our toilet area before.
13:02
And then our shower was over here, and it had a door.
13:06
Well, because the toilet side was bigger than the shower,
13:11
we just flipped 'em.
13:13
And we don't have to have a door, which is great.
13:20
And,
13:22
oh, Michael's had a shower this morning, I think.
13:25
- [Eddie] Yes, he did.
13:26
- Great time of day and look how I got my feet wet,
13:29
and now they're wet and dirty.
13:33
And y'all, something that was really, really, really
13:37
such a wonderful luxury.
13:42
Some friends out in California,
13:46
Michael had gone out to go hunting and fishing with 'em,
13:50
and he discovered, he sat on this toilet that the folks had,
13:56
and he called me up,
13:58
and we were in the middle of building Riverbend,
14:02
and he said,
14:03
"We got to stop on any toilets that we've ordered.
14:07
We've got to stop,
14:09
because my butt is the cleanest butt in California,
14:15
and I want us to have one of these toilets at Riverbend."
14:19
And it's a TOTO, y'all.
14:21
It's wonderful.
14:26
It automatically opens.
14:27
It has a light.
14:32
It has a wash,
14:34
where you can wash,
14:36
and it has a dryer.
14:38
And then it flushes automatically,
14:42
and the lid goes back down.
14:47
I highly, highly recommend that.
14:51
I will cut back on something else, so I can have that.
14:57
The little teak bench worked out good, didn't it, Eddie?
15:00
- [Eddie] Yeah.
15:02
(door shuts)
15:03
- Did we wind up ordering that?
15:05
- [Eddie] Yes.
15:08
- Well, it came in quick, didn't?
15:10
- [Eddie] Yeah, pretty quick.
15:12
- Perfect.
15:14
So, the floor is new,
15:16
but all the cabinets are the original cabinets.
15:19
All the fixtures are original.
15:23
So, like I said, I really wanted to duplicate
15:25
what we had done at Riverbend,
15:28
you know, I had my,
15:30
in my little bathroom, I had two sofas,
15:33
and, I mean,
15:37
it was bigger than this room, isn't it, Eddie?
15:39
- [Eddie] Well, with the sitting area now,
15:42
I would say it's about the same as what you had.
15:44
- And had a TV above the fireplace in there,
15:48
and I'm gonna miss that fireplace,
15:50
'cause when I get out of the shower,
15:52
I crank that fireplace up,
15:56
and stand there and get warm quick.
15:58
- [Eddie] Well, you have a fireplace.
16:00
- Oh, yeah, that's right.
16:01
It's just not in the same room as the toilet.
16:05
So,
16:06
this was
16:11
a porch,
16:12
no covering, no nothing.
16:13
It was just a porch,
16:14
and we had put a hot tub right over there.
16:19
And, so, I told Michael, I said,
16:20
"I want the sitting area
16:22
just like we had in our other bathroom."
16:25
And so we put up walls,
16:30
and we had to heighten up the fireplace,
16:34
in order for that to work properly.
16:37
And I said,
16:38
I wanted like a sleeping sofa
16:43
for the grandchildren,
16:45
'cause quite often,
16:46
just one will come to spend the night with me.
16:49
So, this is where they will sleep right here.
16:54
And we've got the covers and everything for it.
16:58
I just hadn't set it up yet.
17:00
And you got wonderful deep drawers.
17:02
(drawer scrapes)
17:04
You can keep your linens, and your blankets,
17:07
and your pillows.
17:10
So,
17:13
you know, Riverbend was sold furnished.
17:17
They wanted everything that I had.
17:21
Which, it was good and bad.
17:24
Good and bad.
17:26
But, so, as soon as we closed on the house,
17:31
I had to start getting furniture,
17:33
starting over with furniture.
17:35
Well, I'm so fortunate that I had a Paula Deen line
17:40
with Craftmasters.
17:42
I have a furniture line for soft furniture.
17:46
No longer doing the wood, just the soft.
17:50
So, we ordered all of our sofas,
17:55
all of our chairs,
17:57
and I haven't even seen them yet.
18:00
And they're gonna be coming in in the next day or two.
18:03
So,
18:04
Craftmasters,
18:06
Paula Deen Fabrics,
18:07
there's some beautiful, beautiful fabrics.
18:12
And I have seen some of 'em in very expensive shops.
18:20
The price indicates that it's in a fancy shop.
18:23
But you can check that out when you see our furniture.
18:29
So, that's it for the closet and the bathroom.
18:34
So, we're in the boudoir, y'all (laughs).
18:40
Not a whole lot to say about this room.
18:45
They delivered our mattress and our box springs,
18:49
and we just don't have the bed yet.
18:52
Now, this slate blue color,
18:55
it's the same color that you're gonna see in the kitchen.
19:00
And I liked it so well in the kitchen I used it in here.
19:04
And if you're a magazine girl
19:07
that does a lotta looking through magazines for ideas,
19:12
I'm seeing this color a lot,
19:15
a lot, in magazines.
19:19
So, this is Michael's newest purchase (laughs).
19:26
- [Eddie] His movie theater.
19:27
- He said,
19:28
"You know, I'm 65 and my eyes are starting to get bad."
19:33
I said, "Well, I can watch that without glasses, Michael.
19:37
You done good.
19:38
You done real good."
19:40
So, I can't wait to show you this,
19:43
this room after we get it set back up.
19:47
And why don't we go
19:52
onto the back porch.
19:57
So, in our old bedroom,
20:02
it was just windows all across here.
20:05
And a door was right here.
20:08
Well, we closed up that door,
20:10
and made this our exit from the bedroom onto the porch.
20:17
And I just adore, adore the colors
20:20
that we've done out here y'all,
20:22
(door shuts)
20:23
which is the sweet, tender, baby blue,
20:26
which brings like the sky under here,
20:30
and
20:33
the floors.
20:34
What color green is this- - This is called celery.
20:39
- All right, Eddie. Look under the swing.
20:43
Something is leaking.
20:46
- [Eddie] It's probably just coming in
20:48
from the side of the porch-
20:49
- No, it's lying all around.
20:53
Come on, Lulu.
20:56
(door shuts)
20:58
And this is the original bed swing.
21:02
We're gonna have to check that out.
21:06
We've still got to have the...
21:13
- [Eddie] Mattress.
21:14
- Mattress made for this.
21:17
And naturally, we'll do that in an indoor-outdoor fabric,
21:20
so we won't have to worry about.
21:21
That's what I did before.
21:24
And I'll be rocking my babies in this.
21:30
We changed around the design of the rails.
21:36
They were just solid slats.
21:40
And I really wanted to give it more of a cottage look.
21:44
So, we did this, and I love it.
21:46
And this is gonna be screened in, but believe it or not,
21:49
screen is hard to get to right now.
21:54
So, we're having to wait for that to come in.
21:56
But the screen is gonna be on the outside of the rail,
22:00
so we can use this part to set our sodas down.
22:08
And then one more time (laughs),
22:12
we're waiting on screen (laughs).
22:17
But we just went with a single door, right here.
22:23
But those of you that remember,
22:26
our porch was really big.
22:29
You know, the living room
22:33
was a lot shorter- - And inset.
22:37
- Yes, inset.
22:38
And we actually had our,
22:41
what I'm gonna use as our dining table, Eddie,
22:43
that old farmhouse,
22:45
it sat out here on the porch.
22:49
So, the porch lost some, but the living room gained a lot.
22:55
So, we'll have room for a little table and a chair, maybe,
22:58
and a couple little chairs down there.
23:04
And when this house was built,
23:07
we put in wooden steps.
23:11
Hated 'em.
23:12
Hated 'em.
23:13
They were so dangerous,
23:14
and I can't believe I didn't break my neck, y'all.
23:18
So, they suggested
23:19
that we change out the wood steps to brick.
23:23
And it really has anchored the house, you know.
23:27
I almost felt like the house was floating, before.
23:30
So, I love, love, love that look.
23:33
And at Riverbend, we were far from the water.
23:38
I didn't do much going down to the dock house,
23:41
because it was a long walk,
23:43
and I love that we are back real close to our water now.
23:50
It's just a real peaceful, calming feel.
23:54
So, that's it for this video (laughs).
