0:00
- We love our country
0:01
and we're getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July.
0:05
Most people get together and have barbecues,
0:08
have their family or friends over
0:11
and you gotta have something for those children.
0:14
So we are gonna be making patriotic snack mix.
0:19
And got something to show you
0:23
because you know Casey is working in Theresa's place
0:27
because she's in surgery with her husband.
0:30
So her husband Thomas loves gadgets.
0:36
That was Thomas last night in y'all's kitchen, right?
0:39
- We popped the popcorn. (both laugh)
0:44
- I wanna see all Thomas's gadgets, I swear I do. (laughs)
0:48
So we've got his popcorn that he popped so beautifully.
0:55
Not a seed in the whole bunch. Not one unpopped kernel.
1:01
So we're gonna melt a stick of butter.
1:11
Okay, sometimes I can fire that one and it'll fire this one,
1:18
So we'll use this eye.
1:22
Last night, I think I took that off.
1:26
Oh, there it is. Now I bet it'll fire. Yep.
1:31
When I cleaned the stove last night after supper,
1:36
I didn't put the little thing back on properly.
1:43
Okay, so we're gonna melt our butter
1:48
and we're gonna add a half a cup of sugar
1:53
and we are gonna add, I think that's a tablespoon
1:56
of corn syrup, right?
2:03
(bowl clatters) Whoa.
2:05
You know this reminds me when I was on the Oprah show
2:09
and I was using these little glass ramekins,
2:14
I dropped one, I was making my Grandma Paul's
2:17
sour cream poundcake for Oprah
2:20
and it dropped in the moving mixer
2:24
and cake batter was flying everywhere.
2:31
And what did I do? I ran. (laughs)
2:33
- [Casey] It was so funny.
2:35
- It was funny, you know, and seems like it made,
2:41
somebody told me the top 25 videos.
2:44
- [Casey] I think it did. (Paula laughs)
2:48
- And my son Bobby had bought a brand new suit
2:52
to wear on the Oprah show and he was on the first row
2:56
and he got cake batter all over that new suit (laughs)
3:02
and he was mad as a hornet
3:04
because you know how he's funny about his clothes.
3:07
(Paula and Casey laughing)
3:11
Okay, so we're gonna let that sugar dissolve
3:14
and you know we are calling this a patriotic,
3:17
so we're using red and blue candies
3:24
and we've got some white chocolate covered pretzels
3:28
that we're gonna be using.
3:31
And so we're gonna boil this for about a minute,
3:39
stirring it constantly.
3:45
was adding our gelatin and we're gonna let that cook
3:49
and stir it constantly y'all, for about three minutes.
3:54
We wanna make sure it's nice and distributed.
3:58
In fact, I think I'm gonna switch at this point.
4:02
I think I'm gonna switch to a whisk
4:07
to make sure I get all that gelatin incorporated.
4:12
And this, it's not a strawberry, it's a cherry gelatin,
4:19
and it was a three ounce box.
4:22
Okay, so we put our heat on simmer
4:28
for three minutes, stirring constantly.
4:31
And now I'm gonna drizzle this over our popcorn
4:37
and then I'm gonna be stirring it
4:38
to make sure it's all coated
4:42
because I want Thomas's popcorn to work out perfect.
4:47
Patriotic popcorn y'all.
4:52
And we're gonna put this in the oven on like 250
4:57
and we're gonna bake it for 20 minutes.
5:01
- [Casey] Stirring every five minutes.
5:03
- Yes, stirring every five minutes. That's right.
5:05
'Cause you wanna keep it from not kind of sticking together,
5:12
So in the oven it goes.
5:13
And like Casey said, we're going to stir this
5:15
like every five minutes for 20 minutes.
5:20
So our next step is to lay this out
5:24
in as much of a single file as we can.
5:29
I think I'm gonna take that tray out.
5:33
That'll give us a little bit more room
5:34
(parchment paper crinkling)
5:38
and you'll wanna take this out kind of immediately
5:41
as soon as you take it outta the oven,
5:44
you don't want it to cool in your pan.
5:48
So we're just gonna let that cool.
5:51
And then we got some more good stuff to add to it y'all.
5:57
This popcorn is so good, just like this.
5:59
Did you taste it, Casey?
6:01
- [Casey] Yes, it's delicious.
6:04
- [Cameraperson] I did.
6:09
And it doesn't take but a couple of minutes
6:11
for that popcorn to cool.
6:19
I wonder if I'm coordinated enough to do this. (laughs)
6:24
Who wants to bet against me?
6:28
(parchment paper rattling) (Paula laughing)
6:30
Look a there, I did it, didn't I?
6:33
So you know, I told y'all about these chocolate candies
6:38
for patriotic colors and we gotta have something white
6:44
to go with that red and blue, don't we?
6:47
Red, white, and blue. (food rattling)
6:55
The big kids and the little kids are gonna love this.
7:02
So what not maybe get a chocolate that...
7:06
and how 'bout a white...
7:12
Want you to make sure you take some to your children.
7:14
- [Casey] They'll love it.
7:15
- And show your husband Thomas how good he popped that corn.
7:19
- Didn't eat it. (Paula laughs)
7:24
- Perfect. (snack mix rattling)
7:26
So you'll just wanna put this in a nice filled up container
7:35
and say happy 4th of July y'all.
7:38
I got a little sidebar y'all on the patriotic popcorn.
7:43
Eddie was digging down in my cupcake decorations
7:48
and he found these patriotic stars.
7:51
So, you know, just put, use your imagination
7:57
so the kids will be happy when they come up on a star.
8:01
They don't taste like anything, but they're pretty. (laughs)
8:08
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
