- Y'all, we are walkin' down memory lane today,
0:06
and those of you who have followed me
0:10
for a long time is probably gonna remember this
0:14
because this was in the early days
0:17
of my show on a food channel here.
0:23
And they gave me...
0:29
It's so funny, I remember it like it was yesterday.
0:31
They gave me the subject they wanted me
0:36
to prepare, and it was donuts.
0:40
I said, "What in the world do you do with donuts?"
0:43
You just eat 'em while they're warm.
0:46
Well, you will not believe it.
0:48
As fate would have it,
0:52
I got a letter from a guy that lived in Florida.
0:56
His name is Bill Nicholson,
0:59
and I hope you're still doing well, Bill.
1:02
He sent me a note and said,
1:04
"Paula, I was having a dinner party
1:08
and realized I didn't have a dessert,
1:12
and the grocery stores were closed."
1:14
So he told me that he had to go to a curb store.
1:19
Yeah, I'm sure y'all know what a curb store is,
1:22
a gas station, and he said he had
1:25
to get ingredients that he could find in the curb store.
1:29
He found donuts. He found fruit cocktail.
1:33
He found sweetened condensed milk. He found raisins.
1:37
And he said," I'm gonna make something
1:41
out of this for dessert."
1:43
I mean, this was not two or three days
1:45
before I was gonna have to film this show using donuts.
1:52
And I got in touch with him.
1:54
I said, "Oh, Bill, you have pulled me out of the crapper,
1:58
'cause I didn't know what I was gonna make using donuts."
2:02
And we made it, and I'm telling you what,
2:06
it was so early in my career.
2:08
That's when I was checkin' Facebook
2:11
to see what people were sayin'.
2:14
Honey, they were hanging me. They were hanging me.
2:19
They accused me of being
2:20
the devil's right hand person,
2:25
tryin' to kill everybody in America.
2:28
And when I shared Bill's recipe, I also shared
2:34
the fact that this might be one serving per lifetime y'all.
2:40
But we have had so much fun
2:45
with this Krispy Kreme bread pudding,
2:52
and like I said, it's delicious.
2:55
And just the fact that Bill was running
2:58
through curb stores trying to find something
3:02
to make a dessert with.
3:04
And he said everybody fell in love
3:07
with it and wanted the recipe.
3:11
So, on my donut show,
3:15
no problem, no problem.
3:18
I had a recipe, thanks to Bill Nicholosn.
3:22
I'll never forget Bill, never forget.
3:27
Bill's original recipe, y'all,
3:30
called for two dozen donuts.
3:36
I'm gonna start with a dozen and a half though,
3:40
and I've got the biggest can of fruit cocktail
3:44
that one can buy. (chuckling)
3:48
(can clamoring)
3:48
I've got two beaten eggs.
3:53
(bowl tinkling)
3:54
I've got one can of sweetened condensed milk.
3:59
(spatula clattering)
4:00
And y'all, like I said, that was...
4:04
I did this back when I was
4:08
really taking everybody's comments serious.
4:10
I didn't know that there was people out there that,
4:15
just wanted to be nasty and hurt you
4:17
'cause it hurt me feeling so bad
4:21
that they were sayin' I was a spawn on the devil.
4:26
(bag crinkling)
4:29
Alright, it calls for a nine ounce of raisins.
4:34
(bag crinkling)
4:35
But I don't think...
4:36
Is this a nine ounce? Yep, it's a nine ounce box.
4:40
(bag crinkling)
4:41
I'm just gonna kind of do what I want to on the raisins,
4:48
although I do love raisins.
4:49
(bag crinkling)
4:50
So I'm gonna do what Bill told me to do.
4:53
(bag crinkling)
4:55
I'm gonna use the whole nine ounce box.
5:01
Alright now, so what we have to do now,
5:05
wanna just mix this up good.
5:07
(spatula banging)
5:08
And then we're gonna pour it over our doughnuts.
5:13
(concoction squelching)
5:14
And like I said, I'm...
5:18
I don't want this to be dry.
5:21
It's been years since I made it y'all,
5:24
but I don't want the bread pudding to be too dry,
5:27
although we have got a secret bath that we're
5:32
gonna bathe this in after it's done.
5:35
We got a bigger bowl
5:38
because we are going,
5:42
this to sit for maybe 10
5:47
or 15 minutes to absorb
5:51
all the juice.
5:52
And this is the way we're gonna do it
5:57
to see that that happens
5:59
(concoction squelching)
6:05
'cause we want those donuts to kind of break down.
6:09
And you saw I was just cubin' the donuts.
6:15
Now it's time, y'all, to add the cinnamon,
6:19
and Bill just says one to two teaspoons of cinnamon.
6:25
So I did like a heapin' teaspoon.
6:30
(spoon clattering)
6:31
Alright, so you can see the donuts are breakin' down.
6:37
(spoon scraping) (concoction squelching)
6:43
(spoon scraping) (concoction squelching)
6:46
Good, good, good.
6:48
Okay, so Bill, you said two dozen donuts.
6:52
I cut mine down to a a dozen and a half
6:55
because I just don't want it to be dry,
6:59
even though we're gonna have another step to go.
7:04
And we're gonna bake this for about 45 minutes to an hour.
7:10
You can just keep your eye on it.
7:12
Keep your eye on the prize,
7:17
(spoon scraping)
7:18
while I get every bit of this goodness
7:21
of this big old bowl, y'all.
7:23
Aunt Peggy has showed up in the kitchen just in time
7:26
to start sampling our dishes, which is great.
7:29
Alright, now the donut bread pudding is in the oven,
7:33
and while that's cookin',
7:35
I'm gonna make the sauce 'cause I told you Bill bathed it
7:38
in a nice, sweet sauce,
7:42
and we've got rum flavoring.
7:44
Now if you want to...
7:46
(coughing) Excuse me, if you want to,
7:49
you could use real rum,
7:50
but if children are gonna be sampling any
7:53
of my things, I really like to just use extracts.
7:57
So we're gonna melt this stick of butter,
7:58
stir in one pound of confectioner sugar,
8:02
and I'm gonna do this to taste
8:04
and then we're going to pour it over that bread pudding.
8:07
Okay, we've got our stick of butter melted,
8:12
and Bill says to slowly add our powdered sugar.
8:17
(sugar sifting)
8:19
(bag crinkling)
8:25
And he said to just cook this till it's hot and bubbly.
8:31
I think I may have to add a little liquid to this.
8:35
Like I said, it's been a long time since I've made this.
8:39
(pan sizzling)
8:41
(spoon clinking)
8:42
Alright, that's a teaspoon of extract,
8:48
and I don't...
8:50
(pan clamoring)
8:52
I'm gonna cut that off.
8:54
Okay, that's way too...
8:56
I hadn't even added the rest of the powdered sugar,
8:59
so I'm definitely gonna have to
9:06
(door shutting)
9:07
add a little liquid, and I'm gonna do
9:09
that using half and half.
9:12
(pan sizzling)
9:14
It's not going to take a bunch, but
9:18
(pan clattering)
9:20
(Aunt Peggy chatting indistinctly)
9:21
- Yeah. Sorry, Bill.
9:24
(whisk banging)
9:26
And don't get your feelings hurt
9:27
'cause I change my own recipe. (chortling)
9:32
Alright, I wanna get that powdered sugar out of there
9:37
(whisk banging)
9:39
'cause I still got more powdered sugar to add.
9:42
(bag crinkling) (powdered sugar swishing)
9:45
(bag crinkling)
9:46
Alright.
9:49
(spoon clattering)
9:49
Right at two teaspoons of rum extract.
9:53
(mixture sloshing) (whisk banging)
9:58
(mixture sloshing) (whisk banging)
10:00
Looks good. So you can use...
10:02
Leave this fairly thick because we'll be puttin' it
10:07
on hot bread pudding.
10:11
Throw on that bread pudding,
10:13
so this could melt on top of that.
10:18
(cap jangling)
10:20
Looks good, doesn't it?
10:22
Okay, y'all, I left
10:24
that fairly thick.
10:27
Now Bill actually gave us two different instructions.
10:31
He said put some of this on top of each serving.
10:37
So, and then he also said
10:42
cover the bread pudding
10:46
when it comes out of the oven, so.
10:51
Mm. Look at that, y'all.
10:55
And you remember I did add a little cream
10:58
to those donuts because I thought I remembered it being
11:02
a little on the drive side,
11:04
so that cream definitely helped.
11:09
Whoa!
11:10
(spoon scraping)
11:16
That looks pretty good.
11:17
And that's slowly, 'cause I mean,
11:19
that just came outta the oven,
11:21
that's slowly gonna melt in too.
11:26
Okay, donut bread pudding.
11:30
(Paula chuckling)
11:32
Okay, Bill.
11:35
There you go.
11:36
I only changed it just a wee little bit.
11:39
What you think, girl?
11:44
- [Aunt Peggy] Good.
11:48
- Bill did good for a curb store dessert,
11:54
but do make sure you add a little bit more cream 'cause...
12:02
Oh, that's pretty. It's pretty.
12:08
Mm mm.
12:14
Well, thank y'all for walking down memory lane with me.
12:19
That show would be out there on Facebook or somewhere,
12:24
if you wanna go back and see the original.
12:26
- [Aunt Peggy] It's on our YouTube channel.
12:27
Oh it is? The original show from years ago?
12:30
- [Aunt Peggy] Mm hmm.
12:31
- Oh, yay! - [Aunt Peggy] We have all
12:32
those shows on our YouTube channel.
12:35
- See, that's wonderful. - [Aunt Peggy] Yeah.
12:36
- I don't know if I could do
12:38
without them telling me what's what.
12:41
(Paula chuckling)
12:42
Big brain.
12:44
Love and best dishes, y'all.
12:46
And Bill, I hope you're still kickin',
12:50
developin' new recipe.
12:56
