- Hey y'all. I'm in the studio with my grandson, Jack.
0:04
He is on the set of his show Jack Deen's Book Nook.
0:10
And I want to find out for myself today,
0:16
what started, where did this idea come from, Jack?
0:20
And how did you get all this started?
0:22
I mean, it's like a real studio y'all.
0:24
- Yes, Ma'am. So, you know, one day in fifth grade, oh
0:28
it took a long time of thinking about what I wanted to do.
0:30
- Thinking, yeah.
0:31
- So I've always loved watching you YouTube, you know and
0:33
watching all sorts of things I'm interested in.
0:36
- You've been coming on my show since you were like two.
0:38
- Oh, yeah.
0:39
- Yeah, I love getting in front of camera and stuff
0:41
like that, but I always loved watching YouTube.
0:43
So I really wanted to find something that I enjoyed.
0:47
I like watching video games and sports and stuff like that,
0:50
but unfortunately there's never really been a book
0:53
review channel. Which is something that I like
0:55
and so many people care about.
0:56
So I thought maybe I could, you know,
0:58
help start that brand and start...
1:01
- Yes, so people won't waste their time
1:03
and money on a bad book.
1:05
- Yep, yep. So I can review books.
1:07
Tell them what I think about it.
1:09
And really it's always just been about fun for me
1:12
and just doing what I love
1:13
and sharing my message with other people.
1:15
Which is "Just do what you love".
1:16
- How many books do you read a week?
1:18
- A week? Whew. I don't know.
1:20
I guess on a good month where I'm not too busy
1:23
I guess I read about one book a week.
1:26
Because I've been reading bigger books as I get older too.
1:28
This one took me...
1:29
- I was gonna say.
1:30
- It depend on how much I like the book, as well.
1:31
This one took me about two days though.
1:33
- I was so shocked in one of your last shows
1:38
you reviewed a Stephen King book.
1:40
I thought, oh my gosh, he's getting, he's getting old.
1:45
Because your daddy has always been the biggest
1:48
Stephen King freak ever.
1:51
- Yes, ma'am.
1:52
- And so I knew that it would be daddy approved.
1:56
- Oh, yes, ma'am.
1:57
- For you to, to do a review on that.
2:01
So I know I just asked you how all this started,
2:03
but I want to know really how it started and how do you
2:07
how do you get a podcast going?
2:12
- Well, really, I just went on to Google and I just
2:15
created an account Jack Deen's Book Nook.
2:17
And so really that's when it all started.
2:18
I've held that account for a really long time and it wasn't
2:22
until I actually started recording
2:24
and getting a microphone and setting up this awesome set.
2:27
- That was, I gave you that for Christmas, didn't I?
2:30
- Mm-hmm. So it, it really all just is a technical beginning
2:34
with creating an account, which is pretty easy.
2:36
Then just filming videos.
2:37
I used to edit them on my phone, but recently,
2:41
with some Christmas money, I got an editing program
2:44
on my computer to do it a little bit better.
2:46
- That's wonderful. I didn't know you had that capability.
2:50
So anybody can start one of, of these.
2:52
- Oh yeah, of course.
2:54
- And there's a lot of young people out there,
2:56
I understand that have gotten very wealthy...
2:58
- Oh, yeah.
2:59
- From these podcasts that they've started.
3:04
And I know you're not doing it for money
3:06
but you're doing it cause you love it.
3:09
But I just think there's a lot of opportunities out there
3:16
for other people.
3:17
- Of course.
3:18
- You know, for your age, my age, it really doesn't matter.
3:23
- Yeah. Everyone can do it and that's the beauty of it.
3:24
So anything that you care about
3:26
you can just go and talk about it, really.
3:28
There will be people that listen, so it's really cool.
3:30
- Well, I know your podcast is growing.
3:34
- Yeah, it's getting pretty big.
3:35
We're around 4,500 subscribers, which is pretty exciting.
3:39
- That's very exciting, Jack.
3:41
- Yes, I know. Recently we got bookmarks coming out.
3:45
So if you wanna order one yourself
3:46
you can go find out my channel.
3:48
It's usually in the link in my description of most videos.
3:51
And here is the first shirt ever made
3:54
- Yes! Jack Deen's Book Nook.
3:57
- Yep.
3:57
- And it says BookWorms on the back.
4:00
And we're carrying these in the store
4:03
at The Lady and Sons, aren't we?
4:04
- Yes, ma'am. That's right.
4:06
- So, how exciting is that?
4:08
- Super exciting.
4:09
- And Jack works in the store, y'all.
4:11
During his summer vacation and Christmas.
4:16
Were you able to slip some hours in?
4:17
- Went in a couple times.
4:19
- Jack just loves that store.
4:21
And I can't tell you how much his
4:24
grandmother loves seeing him. love what we have built.
4:29
And it's just all very exciting.
4:33
I just love your studio
4:35
and I know you've done all of this yourself.
4:37
- Yes, ma'am.
4:39
- You've thought it through.
4:41
So tell us about all your thoughts in setting up a studio.
4:50
- Yeah, so really in seventh grade
4:52
I had a little studio just kind of with some
4:55
books behind the wall that I used to read as a kid.
4:57
And really a studio to me has always been
4:59
what is my favorite thing.
5:01
And I just wanna surround it with what I love.
5:03
So you can see, I have my computer here for all my editing.
5:06
And this microphone, which you got me for Christmas.
5:08
I've loved being able to use it and it's really
5:10
improved the quality of my videos.
5:12
I got a couple of different lights back there
5:14
to be able to, you know, improve how everything looks.
5:17
- It's all about the lighting jack.
5:19
- Well, so that's more the technical stuff.
5:21
- Yes.
5:22
- But then I have the stuff that I really like
5:24
and that's important to me.
5:25
The first thing is my state championship ring
5:30
from my Raider team season this year at school.
5:34
- Y'all, and I don't know if you know about Raider teams,
5:38
but this is a big deal.
5:40
It's a real big deal.
5:42
Y'all came in second nationally, didn't you?
5:45
- Fourth, it was fourth, but we got first in the state.
5:48
- First in the state, fourth in the entire nation.
5:51
And do you want to tell them what that is?
5:54
- So basically it's...
5:55
- Let me see it on your hand, please.
5:59
It looks like a college ring, doesn't it?
6:01
It's beautiful.
6:03
- Yes, ma'am.
6:04
- So tell them about this particular sport that you do.
6:08
- So, since I go to a military school, they have
6:10
certain offerings that are in the genre of military.
6:14
So Raider team is really, it's always hard to explain.
6:17
But it's really, at its core,
6:19
it's like military physical training,
6:21
turned into a competition.
6:22
So we do plenty of things.
6:23
Every competition takes about eight hours and just back
6:26
to back to back.
6:27
We run 5Ks, lift weights while we run.
6:31
Just a ton of stuff like that.
6:32
And it's been my favorite sport I ever did,
6:35
but about a hundred of us on the team.
6:37
- A hundred of you?
6:38
- Well, the top 12 of us went to state.
6:41
We won, went to Nashville, got fourth,
6:43
and it was an amazing experience.
6:45
- And just you 12 got the rings?
6:48
- Everyone got a ring, but I guess us 12,
6:50
There's special engraving in the middle that says
6:52
"Everything Matters".
6:54
- Oh. Oh.
6:55
- So that's pretty cool.
6:56
- That is way cool.
6:58
- Yes, ma'am.
6:59
So I also, you can notice, my whole background
7:02
is built up of these pop figures.
7:04
And really these are just a way to express
7:07
like the things I care about, you know.
7:09
I love superheroes, Disney World, Harry Potter of course.
7:13
You can definitely tell that by everything else, probably.
7:16
I've just been collecting these for a long time.
7:18
And I just think it looks cool
7:20
to be able to have a wall in the back.
7:21
Have something for the audience to be able to look at.
7:23
- Right, right.
7:25
- So there's that.
7:25
- And you have always loved Harry Potter?
7:29
- Yes, ma'am. Yeah, that's my favorite book series.
7:32
That's really what I read the most.
7:33
I haven't reviewed Harry Potter yet, but I think I'm
7:36
I'm gonna make a review soon about why I love it so much.
7:38
- Oh, good, good.
7:40
- And up here, these are just some childhood
7:43
books that I've read.
7:44
Really these are just ones I keep up here for my brother.
7:47
If he ever want to read anything.
7:48
- Yes. And you can see you progress. Your books progress.
7:52
- Yes, ma'am.
7:53
- In age, just like yourself.
7:56
- Yeah. So like, I started out reading, you know
7:58
all these like Diary of Wimpy Kid books in first grade
8:01
and now I'm reading Stephen King.
8:03
- You started this in the fifth grade,
8:06
but then you took a little break from it.
8:08
- Yeah.
8:10
- Well, I...
8:11
- Do you wanna explain to us why you did that
8:14
and how long it took for you to get it
8:16
kicked back off again?
8:17
- Sure. So I started in fifth grade
8:20
and then it took me you know, production,
8:22
trying to get it all ready and together, get set,
8:25
get all the technical aspects together.
8:26
Then I started really filming the first
8:28
concrete video in seventh grade.
8:31
Which, you know, what was that, four years ago?
8:34
So now where? Yeah, so now this...
8:38
- Seems like three years ago.
8:40
- Yeah, three years ago.
8:41
That's where I was trying to remember the exact time.
8:42
So, then I filmed from seventh into a little bit of eighth.
8:46
Filmed a couple videos, but then, you know
8:49
in middle school I got a little bit shy of what I did.
8:51
I was embarrassed that some people would pick on me.
8:54
I decided to quit, which, you know,
8:56
turned out to be a really big mistake.
8:57
- Yes.
8:58
- But also, it was a huge learning opportunity in my life.
9:01
So I was able to realize that it doesn't matter what
9:04
anybody else says, as long as you do what you love.
9:07
And that's why one of the mottos
9:08
on the channel is "Stay true, be you".
9:10
And that's really the most important thing.
9:12
- And I love that. Stay you, be true.
9:14
- Yep. So that's always been the most important thing
9:18
to me, is just getting that message out there and hoping
9:21
that it can affect someone.
9:22
And if even through all my subscribers,
9:24
if one person is affected by that
9:26
then you know, that's what really means the most to me.
9:28
- I know exactly what you're saying, Jack.
9:30
- Yes, ma'am.
9:31
- If I can just help one person, you know,
9:33
get through the day or whatever they're going through,
9:37
it's worth it.
9:39
So, I understand that you're fixing to do a
9:42
book nook podcast, right?
9:44
- Yes, ma'am, right now.
9:45
- So we can maybe stay and and watch you do that.
9:48
- Yes, ma'am.
9:49
- Do you know what book you're gonna be reviewing?
9:52
- Yes, I'm doing something a little bit different this week.
9:54
So, I just decided to take a compilation of sorts
9:58
of books that I read in the past March, which there's four.
10:04
So, instead of just going into one book in great detail
10:07
like I've done in the past, I hope to be able to go
10:09
through all of them and touch a little bit on each one.
10:12
- Okay, so you'll spend like maybe five minutes per book?
10:16
- Maybe around that, yes, ma'am.
10:18
- Well that's great, because as fast as you read
10:21
those books, it is gonna be tough.
10:25
It's gonna be tough.
10:27
So, I'm just so proud of you son and the fact that Jack
10:33
at 16 years old sits here and says, "Be true, be you".
10:39
You know, I have known some adults that,
10:43
they never learned that.
10:45
And the fact that at 16, Jack has got that kinda wisdom.
10:49
It just makes me very, very proud and I love you grandson.
10:54
- Love you, too Guinny. Thank you for coming on the show.
10:56
- Uh-huh, and I hope y'all will tune into his
11:00
Jack Deen's book Nook on YouTube.
11:06
- Yes, ma'am.
11:10
- Hey y'all, it's Paula Deen.
11:12
