0:00
- What I've got to say today, y'all,
0:03
I will be saying for maybe one or two weeks at the most,
0:09
but what I need is in storage.
0:13
How many times have y'all
0:15
heard me say that in the last nine months?
0:18
Teresa came in with a basket
0:20
of beautiful North Carolina tomatoes
0:23
that she picked up from Davis Produce here in Savannah,
0:27
and she brought some canning jars and said,
0:31
"Could you show everybody how to can tomatoes?"
0:35
- [Teresa] No, I told you p-
0:36
No no... Let me express- - What did you say?
0:38
- [Teresa] People asked us
0:39
for you to show them how to can tomatoes.
0:41
- Uh-huh, and you asked me- - [Teresa] Oh, okay.
0:44
- Well I'm just clarifying. - If I would- (chuckles)
0:46
This request didn't come from Teresa,
0:49
(Teresa chuckles) but it did come from Teresa,
0:52
because she's the one that gets the emails and request.
0:58
So to me, it's coming from Teresa.
1:03
From someone else, but out of Teresa's mouth,
1:05
did I say that simple enough to suit you,
1:08
Teresa? (chuckles) - [Teresa] Yes, ma'am.
1:11
I'm just correcting- - So anyway,
1:12
she asked if I could show y'all how I can tomatoes.
1:18
And I said, "Well, I'd love to,
1:20
but my grandmother Paul's big canner
1:26
pressure cooker is in storage,
1:29
and you have to water bath these in these jars.
1:34
I don't even have a pot here
1:36
that would cover these by an inch, so...
1:40
But I am gonna show ya
1:42
if you've got some ripe tomatoes on hand,
1:45
I am gonna show you what I will do
1:47
sometimes rather than let them ruin,
1:50
you just take your tomatoes
1:54
and wash them. (water splashes)
1:55
You wanna make sure they're clean.
1:58
And I've done this so many times before,
2:02
especially one year when we had a garden,
2:05
and we had a lot of tomatoes, y'all.
2:08
So all you have to do is get you a freezer bag.
2:12
Now, this one's not a freezer.
2:14
It's just a regular storage bag,
2:16
but so it must be a freezer.
2:20
And all you do is wash your tomatoes,
2:23
(tomatoes thud on the counter)
2:25
put them in a Ziploc bag,
2:27
and throw the bag in the freezer.
2:31
And when you're ready to use them,
2:35
all you have to do is run them under warm water,
2:39
and that skin just slips right off.
2:43
And you gon' have the most wonderful, fresh tomatoes
2:47
for your soups, or for spaghetti, okra and tomatoes.
2:54
We love that along with a pot of rice and some corn bread.
3:02
It's such a easy way to put up tomatoes.
3:06
The only drawback is you gotta have a big freezer,
3:11
because they do take up quite a bit of room,
3:14
but you will be so happy to pull out that bag
3:18
of good ole ripe tomatoes in January
3:23
and make you something good, good with them.
3:28
So we are fixing to start moving into our house next week,
3:36
we're hoping, right, Eddie? (chuckles)
3:38
- [Eddie] Yes. - Next week.
3:41
So as soon as I find my grandma's (chuckles) canning pot,
3:50
I'm gonna show y'all how she taught me how to can tomatoes.
3:56
But until then, this is a great way to get by.
