- Hey y'all.
0:01
I'm back in my kitchen with a wounded warrior.
0:07
He survived in Afghanistan.
0:11
- Yep.
0:11
- But he left some body parts behind
0:14
when you left there, didn't you?
0:15
- I didn't need 'em.
0:16
- You didn't need 'em. (chuckles)
0:18
- Well, both my legs were blown off by a 200 pound IED
0:22
while I was on mission.
0:23
So, yeah.
0:25
- So, JP is one of these wonderful people
0:31
that when you're with him,
0:33
he gives you much more than you give him.
0:38
He's one of those men that he's thankful for every day.
0:43
And he has taken his disability
0:47
and he has blossomed with it.
0:50
He's a singer.
0:52
And in the house that Wounded Warriors built for him,
0:58
has a studio, a recording studio so he can get in there
1:01
and sing and record.
1:03
And you do speaking engagements, don't you?
1:05
- Absolutely.
1:07
- And not only did he get a house,
1:11
he got a wife.
1:12
- What?
1:13
(Paula laughs)
1:14
- Where did you find her, JP?
1:16
- I prayed for her.
1:17
- I, you know what?
1:18
- Yeah, found her at the gym. - I did too.
1:20
I did too.
1:20
You found her at the gym?
1:21
- Yep. - Yep.
1:22
- That's wonderful.
1:23
This is Crystal.
1:25
- Yes, hello.
1:25
- Crystal Lane.
1:27
- Yep.
1:28
- JP's wife, and, yeah.
1:30
Yeah, you've just taken everything
1:32
and turned it into such blessings.
1:34
Praise the Lord.
1:36
- Yep, amen. - Amen.
1:37
- Praise the Lord.
1:38
So, we're making hassleback potatoes.
1:44
And it takes a few minutes,
1:48
and you don't wanna rush when you do this.
1:50
So JP did this for me because I get in a hurry.
1:53
I like to do things fast, fast, fast.
1:56
And you take your potato.
1:57
Why don't you demonstrate?
2:02
All right, this is a baking potato, y'all.
2:04
And we just peeled it.
2:06
And you can put it in a big serving spoon like that.
2:10
And that spoon is gon' prevent you
2:11
from slicing all the way through on that potato
2:14
because you want to be
2:18
a quarter of an inch away.
2:21
Some of these we might not have gotten deep enough,
2:25
so I'll go back and go a little deeper.
2:28
But you wanna be careful 'cause you don't want to,
2:32
you don't want to cut through 'em.
2:35
- [JP] Yeah, that would be bad.
2:36
- Yeah. (laughs)
2:39
Now how did you, what did you do with that piece?
2:42
- Well, I was still hungry.
2:44
(Paula laughs)
2:46
I don't know where it went to.
2:47
- You a thumb sucker?
2:48
- A thumb sucker. (laughs)
2:49
(Paula laughing)
2:50
It rolled away somewhere.
2:52
Paula, I don't know, I never found it.
2:54
Never found it.
2:55
- I just love his personality, y'all.
2:57
He is just, he's precious.
3:02
All right.
3:02
So, hopefully.
3:07
Hopefully these are gonna fan open,
3:10
and you wanna kind of gently, you know,
3:12
just encourage them to open before you bake 'em.
3:16
And we have got
3:22
a stick of butter right here, y'all.
3:24
We got some fresh thyme and some fresh rosemary.
3:27
And we gon' need a teaspoon of that, of each.
3:32
And we gon' mash it in with our butter,
3:34
making us a compound butter.
3:36
And then.
3:37
Look at JP.
3:38
- Ah.
3:40
(Paula laughs)
3:41
- If you wanna hassleback perfect potato,
3:43
you call this man.
3:45
Although Crystal and I won't let you have him, probably.
3:48
(JP laughing)
3:49
(Crystal and Paula laughing)
3:50
- That's funny.
3:51
- I can borrow him, it's okay.
3:52
- You can borrow him?
3:54
You mean loan him out?
3:55
- Yeah, loan him out.
3:56
- Or you borrow? Okay. (laughs)
3:57
- No, I don't borrow him, he's mine.
3:58
- I was gon' say. (Crystal laughs)
3:59
- She puts my legs on and scoots me out the door.
4:01
(Paula laughs)
4:02
Now, get to work.
4:03
(Paula laughs)
4:05
- You know, I was telling y'all earlier
4:07
about both of my parents losing the same leg
4:10
in the same spot.
4:12
- [JP] Yeah.
4:13
- And that was in the forties, the early forties, 1940s.
4:20
And my daddy,
4:23
his prothesis was a heavy, heavy wooden leg,
4:31
and he had a belt around it with a big old thing
4:36
and he had a wool sock.
4:38
- Mm, yep.
4:39
- A thick wool sock that he put on the stump.
4:44
- To stop the splinters.
4:45
- Yes.
4:46
- Yeah.
4:47
- Yes.
4:48
And y'all are so fortunate
4:53
that this has come so far.
4:55
- Yeah.
4:56
- You wanna show 'em? - Oh, yeah, this.
4:57
- You wanna show 'em your legs?
4:59
They're lightweight now, aren't they?
5:01
- Carbon fiber.
5:02
Completely lightweight, but super strong and durable.
5:06
And now even my left leg, for example,
5:08
has a computer system in it, so.
5:11
- Get out!
5:12
So you type it in the computer
5:12
what you want it to do? - Yeah. Yeah.
5:14
- Who you want it to go kick.
5:15
- Yep.
5:16
Tell it, say, "Hey, go kick that person right there."
5:18
(Paula laughs)
5:19
It literally is battery powered.
5:21
I gotta plug it in, otherwise it dies
5:23
and I walk like an adorable little penguin.
5:25
- No.
5:26
- But it helps me walk very well,
5:28
and it's amazing technology.
5:29
- So the left one is better than the right one?
5:31
Is the right one an older prothesis?
5:35
- Since it's below the knee amputation,
5:37
I have my knee, so I don't need that computer to operate.
5:40
- [Paula] Oh, okay.
5:41
You don't need to tell it to bend.
5:42
- Right.
5:43
So, it's pretty amazing technology nowadays, but.
5:47
- I wonder how much that weighs when you take it off.
5:50
- 12 pounds.
5:51
- Each leg weighs 12 pounds?
5:53
- Yeah, the left is 12.
5:54
The right is eight.
5:55
- Oh, okay.
5:56
- 'Cause it's a smaller prosthetic.
5:57
- Yes. Okay. Okay.
5:59
But that's still lighter than.
6:02
- Yeah.
6:03
- You know, what my,
6:04
and my mother lost her leg because of bone cancer.
6:09
So she never did get to the point.
6:12
- Right. - You know, that.
6:13
Why am I doing this?
6:15
- 'Cause it's fun.
6:16
- I hired you to come in here and do this.
6:18
(everyone laughing)
6:19
- I got my karate chopping skills.
6:22
Can I do that?
6:23
- You just do whatever, we.
6:24
(Paula and JP laughing)
6:25
All right, now look what you did to me.
6:27
- Oh, twinsies.
6:28
Now we're twins.
6:29
(Paula and JP laughing)
6:32
That's so funny.
6:33
- Did that happen in the accident as well, or?
6:36
- Yeah, so most people think
6:38
that I just lost my legs in Afghanistan when I was blown up.
6:41
But actually, my left femur snapped in half,
6:43
my pelvis snapped in half,
6:44
my spine dislocated from my pelvis.
6:47
My right arm snapped in half 90 degrees.
6:49
My right middle finger was amputated for using it too much.
6:53
So, I encourage people not to use it.
6:55
- Now, what did you use that finger so much for?
6:56
- Yeah, encourage.
6:58
Well, I wasn't the greatest child growing up.
7:00
(Paula laughs)
7:01
My four front teeth were knocked out,
7:03
but I didn't like those ones anyway, so it's okay. (laughs)
7:08
So, yeah, they put me back together.
7:10
And here we we're today, cooking alongside each other.
7:14
- [Paula] Oh.
7:15
- [JP] Look at that.
7:16
- Oh, that's perfect.
7:17
Put that stuff in that yonder.
7:19
- [JP] It's like I'm a professional.
7:21
- [Paula] Yes, you are.
7:25
(JP imitates chopping noise)
7:26
Yes.
7:28
- [Crystal] No excuses.
7:28
You can do this at home now, right?
7:30
- Yes.
7:31
- Oh, I think it's only a one time deal.
7:32
(Crystal laughs)
7:33
I think after this I'm gonna be too exhausted.
7:35
- I don't think so.
7:36
- Well, it'd make a difference, JP,
7:38
when you just had to do two.
7:40
All right, so we gon' wanna salt these.
7:44
And I'm wondering.
7:47
You know what?
7:49
Let's butter 'em and then salt 'em.
7:51
How 'bout that?
7:52
- [JP] Oh, I love me some butter.
7:53
- Okay. Or why don't we do that?
7:55
- There you go. - Even better, right?
7:58
So what we wanna do now is, thank you.
8:02
Is just take that butter.
8:05
Well, we need to mix up the salt in it.
8:07
- You're using your hands.
8:08
This is the fun part.
8:10
- Yes. Yes.
8:11
- Oh, I'm taking this off, where'd you?
8:12
- Could you stir that butter up in there?
8:15
I forgot.
8:15
- With my fingers?
8:17
- No, with that spatula.
8:18
(Paula and Crystal laughing)
8:20
And now get in there with your fingers.
8:24
And we gon' pick up them taters.
8:28
We just gon' rub 'em with that butter.
8:31
And there's some things that,
8:34
this is how you have to do it.
8:36
You have to use your hands.
8:38
- See, I was taught never to do this because I,
8:40
they didn't let me have fun.
8:42
- [Paula] They didn't?
8:43
- [JP] I appreciate you letting me have fun.
8:45
- Listen, absolutely. - In the kitchen.
8:48
- I like touching my food.
8:51
(JP and Crystal laughing)
8:53
And you wanna just make sure it's got butter.
8:56
- Like that?
8:57
- All over? - All over it.
8:58
- All over.
8:59
- Oh, oh, all over.
9:01
All right.
9:01
- Yes, all over it.
9:02
- I'm okay with this.
9:03
- [Crystal] Why you patting it like it's a baby?
9:05
- It's a good little tater tot.
9:07
(Paula and Crystal laughing)
9:12
- All right, these are gonna go in that oven in there.
9:16
- [JP] All right.
9:17
- JP, and we gon' cook these for about 45 minutes
9:20
to an hour.
9:21
We're hoping that they will fan out
9:23
and turn a beautiful, toasty brown.
9:26
- Mm.
9:26
- And if they don't, we'll just wrap 'em in tin foil
9:29
and tell everybody they're having a baked potato.
9:31
(everyone laughing)
9:33
- That works too.
9:34
- We got to leave ourselves an out.
9:36
Would you like to put that in the oven?
9:37
- Absolutely.
9:40
- So, we'll see y'all in about 45 minutes to an hour.
9:44
Your taters are done, honey.
9:45
- [JP] They're done.
9:46
- Yes, so let's take 'em out.
9:48
- [JP] Sounds good.
9:49
- And have you ever had a hassleback potato before?
9:51
- [JP] I have not.
9:53
- Okay. Well, you can sit them right here
9:55
on this butcher's block.
9:57
- [JP] Butcher's block.
9:58
- Oh, uh-huh, don't burn yourself.
10:01
- [JP] There we go.
10:03
- And we gon' put it on this platter.
10:06
- Got it.
10:07
Right now from here?
10:07
- [Paula] 'Cause it's our secret family recipe.
10:09
- [JP] Nice.
10:10
- So we gonna be eating soon.
10:13
The gang's still all here.
10:16
These are gorgeous.
10:17
- Mm.
10:20
- Gorgeous, gorgeous.
10:22
- I was, that was all you.
10:24
I was just here to.
10:26
- You did all the work. - To cheer you on.
10:27
- You did all the work.
10:28
- I don't remember, short term memory.
10:29
- I'll see you at the dinner table.
10:31
- Yes, ma'am. (Paula laughs)
10:35
- Hey y'all, it's Paula Deen.
