- Hey, y'all.
0:01
This is for anybody out there
0:02
that's looking for a little homemade gift,
0:04
maybe to give their mother or grandmother for Mother's Day,
0:08
and I'm sharing this neat little recipe with y'all today
0:13
that my niece Corrie, Corrie Hiers Rooks, taught me.
0:19
She shared it with me,
0:20
and it's really a nice little gift
0:22
that most people would appreciate using.
0:26
So, we're doing a salt scrub today,
0:29
and we're using a sea salt.
0:34
We've got a half a cup of sea salt.
0:36
We're going to use a half a cup of safflower oil.
0:41
Corrie's recipe, though, calls for a sweet almond oil,
0:45
but we were unable to find that,
0:47
so we just gonna use the safflower,
0:50
but her directions says that
0:52
you can substitute a light olive oil,
0:56
a vegetable oil, with the sweet almond.
0:58
You can substitute the sweet almond oil
1:02
with a light oil oil or a vegetable oil.
1:05
So, I have bought these beautiful,
1:10
I can't remember where I found them,
1:11
but I thought they were so beautiful.
1:14
You know, we've seen Ball jars
1:16
since the beginning of time, you know,
1:19
the clear ones like these,
1:22
but I found these green ones one day
1:24
and I thought they were just beautiful.
1:27
Do you remember where I found these, Eddie?
1:29
- [Eddie] You know, we were just actually in Publix
1:32
and we saw some that were more in the blue-green color
1:40
like your cup,
1:42
but we got those last summer,
1:43
I think when we were doing some canning.
1:46
- I just thought they were beautiful when I saw 'em.
1:49
So, I am grating a lemon,
1:56
and I'm gon' zest an orange
2:00
and I'm gonna go ahead, it calls for a teaspoon,
2:04
but you know what?
2:05
That's probably about a half a teaspoon right there.
2:08
I was gon' say, if it's a little over, that doesn't matter.
2:14
The more, the merrier.
2:18
Okay, so now I'm going to grate our orange
2:29
and get us a half a teaspoon of orange zest up.
2:38
We looked and looked and looked
2:40
and I couldn't find my zester,
2:42
but this little box grater that Bobby had in his cabinet,
2:47
I think it's a newer one 'cause it really works good.
2:52
It's got a grate on it
2:53
the size of your microplane would have,
2:56
so this is working good.
3:00
Okay.
3:02
The orange is certainly bigger than the lemon,
3:07
so it's getting hard to hold on to
3:12
'cause I'm trying to hold on to the pith,
3:16
the pith of the orange right now.
3:19
And it's a little stick.
3:24
Okay, I want to tap that,
3:25
ooh, that's much more than a half a teaspoon, but you know,
3:30
that's good, I'll take it.
3:32
I will take it.
3:36
What, pumpkin?
3:44
Okay.
3:46
So, a half a teaspoon of each,
3:49
and now we're gonna,
3:51
let me make sure I do this right.
3:54
In a medium dry bowl, combine all ingredients,
3:57
making sure not to let any water touch them
4:01
as it will dissolve the salt
4:03
and you don't want that to happen.
4:05
So, we're going to add our half a cup of salt.
4:15
And now we're going to measure up
4:16
a half a teaspoon of the safflower oil.
4:26
- [Theresa] Ooh, it smells good.
4:28
- Doesn't it? - Mm-hmm.
4:29
- [Paula] And there's nothing like as a zest.
4:33
Okay.
4:34
- [Theresa] Sorry about that.
4:35
I could have opened that.
4:36
- Imma coming, y'all.
4:39
Okay.
4:42
We'll measure half a cup.
4:47
All right, so in that goes,
4:51
and Theresa deals with oils.
4:57
I've known her to use all these oils
4:59
that you rub on ya or smell of them,
5:03
and they're supposed to cure everything that ails you.
5:06
- [Theresa] Essential oils, yeah.
5:07
- Yeah, essential oils.
5:08
- [Theresa] I just like the way they smell.
5:10
- [Paula] Were you selling those for a while?
5:13
- [Theresa] Oh gosh.
5:14
Back when Stephanie Peay lived here, yes.
5:17
That was like a hundred years ago.
5:19
- Well, it does seem like it's been
5:21
a long, long time since they lived here.
5:24
Stephanie is still with our team, though.
5:26
She just works from home now.
5:29
So, anyway, Theresa shared with me
5:34
if this is not strong enough for you,
5:38
you can add some essential oils,
5:40
and this is lemon,
5:42
and Theresa said it comes out real slow.
5:46
- [Theresa] So, I would only put like two or three.
5:47
You don't need a lot. - Okay, like four or five
5:50
came out. - Or six or seven. (laughs)
5:52
- And this is orange.
5:58
I'm not gon' put as much orange,
6:00
'cause I had a lot more orange zest than I had-
6:02
- Lemon? - Lemon,
6:03
and I love that lemon smell.
6:08
Oh my gosh.
6:10
I think it could stand some more lemon, Theresa.
6:12
Smell it.
6:15
- Well, don't you think it might as it sits
6:19
get a little...
6:20
- [Paula] I don't know.
6:21
I don't do these essential oils.
6:22
- Well, this is what reminds me of
6:24
when you go to bathrooms in nice places,
6:27
and they have...
6:29
You know what I mean? - Have you been going
6:30
into bathrooms in raunchy places?
6:32
- Well, you know, I've probably been in a few.
6:34
But, you know, they have it,
6:35
and they sell it for like 15 and $16 a bottle.
6:40
You can never have too much smell, in my opinion.
6:42
It is very heavy on the orange side.
6:46
- Yes.
6:48
Yes, and I would rather have had it
6:50
heavier on the lemon side, but...
6:58
- [Theresa] Well, that the nice thing about this.
7:00
You really could do anything.
7:01
- You choose your flavors.
7:04
- [Theresa] Especially like you could do a lavender one
7:06
with some lavender oil and just
7:07
put fresh dried lavender in it,
7:10
and that would be really pretty.
7:12
- [Paula] Yes, all right,
7:13
so we're just gonna, I would need to double that recipe.
7:18
Actually, I'd need to triple it,
7:22
because I wouldn't want to take somebody a half a jar.
7:25
(chuckles)
7:26
- [Theresa] No.
7:27
- [Eddie] What do you do with this?
7:29
- [Paula] All right, I'm fixing to tell you, Eddie.
7:30
- [Eddie] I've only been in the men's room.
7:33
- [Theresa] And the men's rooms don't have this?
7:34
(all laugh)
7:36
You've been robbed.
7:39
- I'm fixing to tell you how to use it.
7:44
Now, you just keep this in your bathroom,
7:47
and Corrie tells me to use,
7:52
just before showering,
7:53
swirl your ingredients together with your fingertips to mix,
7:59
and then after you bathed your body completely,
8:02
and just before getting out of the shower,
8:04
apply your citrus body scrub in circular motions
8:10
on your body everywhere.
8:13
And you can use your hands or a washcloth,
8:17
and then you just rinse it off, and pat dry, and get out,
8:21
and the texture of that salt
8:23
will take that dead skin off of you.
8:27
So, some fresh skin.
8:29
- [Theresa] And then you feel nice and smooth.
8:31
- Yeah, it makes you nice and smooth and soft.
8:33
- [Theresa] So, they started doing 'em in bathrooms,
8:36
and it's the same exact thing and it's a body scrub,
8:39
but they'll put it in a women's bathroom.
8:42
Apparently not in the men's.
8:43
And you can wash your hands really good and put that on
8:47
so you won't come out of the bathroom with dry hands.
8:50
- Right, and then they'll put a 15 or $19 price tag on it
8:58
because you liked it and it smelled so good.
9:02
- [Theresa] You could even probably add a little more salt,
9:04
like, depending on what kind of texture you like.
9:06
- Oh, absolutely.
9:08
You can easy triple this recipe,
9:11
and if we tripled it, it would fill up a nice jar.
9:15
Yeah, you could add some more salt on that,
9:17
because salt scrubs that I've used before,
9:20
they were not homemade,
9:21
but they had a lot more salt in them
9:23
than this one has.
9:24
This is kind of liquidy,
9:26
but that oil, when you rub that on your body,
9:29
your skin's just gonna soak it in and give you a nice sheen.
9:33
- [Theresa] Well, and the nice thing about this
9:34
is your kids can make it with you.
9:36
So, like, it can be a gift to teachers.
9:39
It could be a great Mother's Day gift.
9:40
- Daddies.
9:42
If y'all are out there listening,
9:44
get in the kitchen with your children
9:46
and make Mommy or Grandmommy a little Mother's Day gift,
9:52
and make sure you find a pretty jar to put it in.
9:56
Happy Mother's Day to everybody out there.
9:59
Love and best, best dishes.
