- Hey everybody, Bobby Deen here
0:01
with another quick simple recipe
0:03
that I think that you and your family are gonna love.
0:07
This is a baked bean casserole.
0:09
Super simple, tasty, rich, satiating,
0:14
and kids, adults, everybody likes it
0:17
and it begins with a little oil in a pan
0:22
and some sauteed onion.
0:24
Like so many other great recipes do,
0:28
little oil, a little onion is the beginning of everything.
0:32
So we're gonna sweat these onions
0:34
down for a couple of minutes
0:35
(glass banging sounds)
0:38
and while we do that, we'll go ahead
0:41
and take a little break already
0:43
and then we'll come back and finish this up.
0:47
There's nothing quite like the smell of onions
0:49
sauteing in the kitchen.
0:50
It's just the basis of so many good dishes
0:54
and I love that smell.
0:55
These onions are sweating.
0:56
They're doing really, really nicely.
0:58
So, we're gonna go ahead and add a can of tomatoes,
1:04
and we'll saute that for another minute or two.
1:08
And I'm on about medium heat,
1:11
medium low, medium high, medium,
1:12
that's where I live with lots of my cooking.
1:15
I'd rather cook than scald,
1:18
but the tomatoes immediately cooled
1:20
everything off a little bit.
1:21
So we're gonna have to wait just a minute for that
1:23
to come back up to temperature.
1:25
So while that's happening,
1:26
we'll talk about the rest of the dish.
1:28
The beans, the baked beans, your choice,
1:30
I'm using canned baked beans today.
1:31
I'm using a brand that I trust and really like
1:34
and lots of you are familiar with them also.
1:37
And then to that we'll add a little brown sugar,
1:39
a little mustard and then a little salt and pepper to taste.
1:43
A friend of mine's mom, when I was in high school,
1:48
used to make a baked bean casserole dish
1:51
at their house that I loved so much.
1:53
And it was basically this, but she added to it,
1:58
ground beef and maybe a sausage mixture.
2:00
It was a blend of meats ground that she added to it.
2:04
And oh my gosh, I could just eat my weight in it.
2:07
Scott Farrow, brother if you were out there,
2:09
I used to come there and eat your mama's
2:12
baked bean casserole with the meat blend in it,
2:16
until it was coming outta my ears, you remember.
2:20
So if you want to, my point is, if you want to,
2:23
once you make this recipe
2:24
the way that I'm showing it to you,
2:26
take it and make your own after that,
2:28
if you wanted to add meat to this,
2:29
it would only fortify it even more.
2:33
And if you're not a meat eater,
2:34
then you'll really like this version of it.
2:36
But play around with it and see what you like,
2:40
see what your family likes.
2:43
So the onion and tomato mixture is doing really well
2:48
and we've got some bubbles happening
2:50
and some good scents going on.
2:53
The onions are nice and sweated.
2:56
So we'll go ahead and add in the brown sugar
3:08
and a tablespoon of mustard.
3:20
Lock that in, mustard, brown sugar, baked beans,
3:26
these things are hand in glove together.
3:30
You know, you might not know it,
3:31
but when you're making hamburgers at your house,
3:35
mustard is a good addition to the hamburger meat.
3:39
Just so you know, while you're blending everything together
3:42
with maybe an egg and a little salt and pepper,
3:45
a little mustard, amplify things a little bit.
3:51
So that's looking and smelling really, really good.
3:57
I'm go ahead and add in our baked beans.
4:07
Who likes baked beans?
4:12
And not just at the 4th of July.
4:14
I like all kinds of beans though.
4:16
Legumes, I don't know about you,
4:18
but I'll sometimes make a meal at my house
4:23
just out of beans and rice
4:25
or there's lots of good cold bean salads.
4:29
Beans, beans, good for your heart, you know.
4:34
They're good for you.
4:37
So this dish is going to be,
4:40
you're wondering, I'm sure this is a baked bean casserole.
4:44
How are you doing a casserole in a skillet like this?
4:49
Well, we are going to transfer our ingredients here
4:54
to a casserole dish and then we're gonna bake it off.
4:59
And now the trick will be,
5:01
we talk about this with almost every recipe that we do,
5:03
but folding these ingredients together
5:05
and making them get married,
5:08
rather than I don't wanna beat my beans to a pulp.
5:13
Sounds kind of funny.
5:15
You just wanna blend everything together
5:17
and get it in a good, good relationship there.
5:25
Now add a little bit of salt and pepper to taste.
5:31
Got the P, and little S, yeah.
5:38
(glass banging sounds)
5:41
Blend it all together real well.
5:43
And I never got above medium heat here.
5:47
You know, a few minutes,
5:48
the oil and the onions, a few minutes together
5:52
and the tomatoes a few more minutes.
5:54
You can smell it, you can see it,
5:56
you can tell when things are,
5:58
you can tell when you're cooking.
6:01
But I would rather cook than burn any day of the week.
6:05
Okay, this looks really, really good
6:07
and it's very well blended together
6:14
and it's getting nice and warm.
6:16
So I'll give that just a couple more minutes on the stove.
6:18
We'll take a little break
6:19
and then we'll come back and put it in the casserole dish.
6:22
Perfect, smells so good.
6:28
All ready smells like a baked bean casserole.
6:35
Okay, so we're gonna add this to our,
6:36
I'm gonna go ahead and turn off the heat,
6:39
add this to our casserole dish and be careful,
6:41
don't splash yourself or anyone else when you do this.
6:46
And always pour away from you.
6:58
So you can imagine how you could up this
7:03
with ground sausage, ground beef,
7:08
game if you like, you know, venison or elk
7:11
or I eat a lot of elk.
7:15
Not that we have it in our region, I have to order it,
7:17
but elk and buffalo are two of my favorites.
7:24
You not getting out of it that easy there, last little bit.
7:29
(metal clanging sounds)
7:37
Wonderful, and boy, we are pushing the limits
7:40
on that pan, that casserole dish.
7:45
I mean, we are right at the tippy top,
7:49
so into the casserole dish.
7:51
We're gonna cover it with some tinfoil
7:55
and we're gonna bake this off.
7:57
I'll wait until, stop crinkling the tinfoil.
8:02
(foil crunching sounds)
8:09
So we don't slosh that on ourselves or anyone else.
8:14
So we'll carefully put this into the oven.
8:16
We'll bake it at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes
8:19
and we'll take the tinfoil off
8:20
and we'll bake it for another 15 to 20 minutes
8:22
to get it nice and golden brown on top.
8:24
So let's go to the oven.
8:26
Our baked bean casserole is outta the oven.
8:28
It is hot, fresh, and delicious looking.
8:32
I haven't tasted it yet, but it looks really, really good.
8:35
The only thing that we didn't do,
8:36
oh yeah, the only thing that we didn't do
8:38
was put a couple of strips of bacon on top
8:44
But if you'd like to do that, you can.
8:46
You can see how it's, yeah.
8:47
See it's not quite tightened all the way up.
8:53
After this sits for a few minutes, it'll be
8:57
just right, oh, this is so hot.
9:00
I'm a little nervous about tasting it.
9:02
I don't wanna have scalded tongue, but let's see.
9:09
Hmm, let's have a barbecue, y'all.
9:15
That's great, that's ready for your rack of ribs
9:16
that are just about to come off the grill.
9:19
All right, happy summer, enjoy.
