0:00
- Okay, y'all, for this next recipe
0:03
that I'm gonna share with you is
0:07
one that my Aunt Glennis, shared with me.
0:13
She was married to my uncle Bernie,
0:16
my daddy's oldest brother.
0:19
And every Thanksgiving
0:21
until I went into the restaurant business,
0:24
every Thanksgiving we spent over there in Statesboro
0:28
the whole Hiers clan, and that went on for 25 years.
0:33
And we have got so many good memories
0:36
of our times over there.
0:38
And Aunt Glennis always had what she called chewies.
0:43
And as soon as you walked in the door,
0:45
the first place you'd go is to the sideboard
0:47
where all her desserts were and grab you a chewy.
0:52
(laughs) So that's what I'm gonna share with y'all today.
0:56
I made some the other day.
0:59
"Wish I had one of Aunt Glennis's chewies."
1:02
I said, "Well, son, I got the recipe.
1:04
"I'll make them for ya."
1:06
And so I made them, (laughs)
1:11
and after he ate one, he said,
1:13
"Mama, I so appreciate you doing that.
1:15
"They weren't as good as Aunt Glennis's."
1:17
I said, "Well, you know memories are always better
1:22
"than actuality." (laughs)
1:26
So now the first thing we're gonna do
1:28
is we are gonna beat our eggs
1:34
and our butter together.
1:35
And that's one stick of butter
1:38
But I agreed with Jamie.
1:40
I thought Aunt Glennis's was better than mine also.
1:58
And we just gonna beat that up
2:02
until it's incorporated real good.
2:06
And then we're gonna add our two cups of self-rising flour.
2:14
Now that's self-rising,
2:15
so don't get confused.
2:21
The flour that I'm putting in here,
2:23
it already contains baking powder and salt.
2:28
If you're using plain flour,
2:31
you would have to add either some baking soda
2:33
or baking powder, but we don't have to with this one.
2:50
Now our sweetener is gonna come from our brown sugar,
3:00
We're gonna use the whole box of light brown sugar.
3:06
And I wouldn't hesitate, if you have dark brown,
3:09
I wouldn't hesitate to use that.
3:13
In fact, you don't have any kind of sugars at all,
3:18
dark sugars, you can make your own
3:23
light brown or dark brown sugar just adding some molasses
3:27
to some regular white sugar.
3:29
So you got your brown sugar
3:33
just in case you don't have any in your pantry.
3:38
All right, now we're slowly gonna add our flour.
3:43
And remember, that's two cups of self-rising flour.
3:52
Okay, so I'm gonna add a tablespoon of vanilla,.
4:01
And now, you know I love nuts.
4:06
I love nuts in anything that I eat that's sweet.
4:12
So the recipe calls for like, what is it,
4:16
two cups and nuts, Teresa.
4:20
- [Teresa] Yes, ma'am.
4:26
- So I'm definitely gonna put the two cups nuts.
4:32
Whoa, that's a nutty stuff.
4:36
All right, now, Aunt Glennis, she used a small package
4:40
of semi-sweet chocolates, and I'm sure it was maybe
4:45
just a six ounce bag that she put in there.
4:49
And this is 10 ounce.
4:50
I don't even know if they make that small bag anymore.
4:53
So I'm just gonna use
5:00
Even when I make my chunk chocolate chip
5:03
(indistinct) cookies,
5:07
I don't use a whole bunch of chocolate chips in them,
5:12
because my favorite part in those cookies is the nuts.
5:22
And I'm using the little miniature chocolate chips.
5:27
So, it's strictly a preference.
5:30
Like I said, that's not my favorite ingredient
5:35
So I'm just using less.
5:37
And it also calls for 3/4 of a cup of grated coconut,
5:45
Well, I normally don't do it, because I think it's Kari
5:51
out of the children in the family that doesn't like coconut.
5:55
But today I'm gonna put some coconut in it
6:07
It's gonna kind of taste like
6:11
a candy bar with almonds in it,
6:13
I mean, with coconut in it.
6:14
Y'all know what I'm talking now.
6:23
Okay, so we're gonna bake this off in a 13 by 9 by 2.
6:28
And we have got our oven preheated at 375 degrees.
6:33
And we're going to bake it for about, let's see.
6:35
I can't remember exactly how long, 25 to 30 minutes.
6:49
That was some runaway coconut.
6:54
All right, so I'm gonna scoop it up this way,
6:56
because that bowl is so heavy to pick up.
7:06
Aunt Jessie and Uncle Bernie,
7:09
they've been gone now for a good while,
7:13
but I thank them so much
7:16
for all the wonderful memories.
7:21
Uncle Bernie had a pond.
7:29
I know one year there were so many of us coming,
7:38
oh, darn, I can't remember what you call them now,
7:42
like those travel trailers.
7:45
- An RV? - Yeah, something like that.
7:47
He had to rent a couple of them to hold us all.
7:52
Oh, and did we ever have fun.
8:01
My cousin, Don, Don Hiers,
8:06
it was a crazy time in Don's life.
8:10
So he was actually able to come just
8:14
maybe two or three times over those 25 years.
8:18
And I wish he had been there,
8:21
'cause he's got such a good memory.
8:24
And he could remind me (laughs)
8:26
of how much fun I had. (laughs)
8:35
go outside and play games.
8:38
And Uncle Bernie would cook a whole hog.
8:45
a hole in the ground.
8:49
He'd cook a whole pig.
8:51
And he arranged for us to have horses.
8:57
So he got them to bring horses.
8:59
So there was just, ugh, so much to do.
9:04
But the most that we ever did there was play poker. (laughs)
9:11
And the family looked so forward
9:14
to those little friendly games of poker.
9:20
And I think we played for a nickel, dime, and a quarter.
9:24
And it's amazing how quickly that can add up. (laughs)
9:28
All right, in the oven, 25 to 30 minutes on 375.
9:40
Perfect, they're ready. (laughs)
9:46
I'm gonna take some of these to Jamie
9:48
and see what he says about this round,
9:51
because the ones that I took him,
9:54
I didn't put coconut in them.
9:57
Like I said, so many folks are just funny about coconut,
10:02
but it's really, really good in there
10:04
if you like chocolate and coconut
10:07
kind of chewy gooey thing.
10:13
is the end and the corner pieces
10:25
Brings back so many memories.
10:34
If you hadn't made these,
10:35
and this recipe has been around so long,
10:38
and I'm sure at this point, everybody's made them before,
10:42
but in case you haven't...
10:45
I hear Mikey coming home.
10:48
One more thing to tempt him with on his keto diet. (laughs)
10:53
So if you've never made them, make sure you do try it,
10:56
because they're delicious. (laughs)
11:00
He just stuck his tongue out at me
11:04
coming through that glass door.
11:10
Would you like a chewy?
11:14
- [Mike] Can I smell one?
11:16
Yes, you can smell them.
11:20
(laughs) Love and best dishes, y'all.
11:23
Now only a devil would do that to somebody.
11:26
Well, they say I was born full of devil anyway.
11:29
So there you go. (laughs)
