- I am sharing a recipe with y'all
0:03
that's actually my children's, one of the boys.
0:07
And, you know, I don't know which one.
0:13
The Dean Brothers recipe, oh, oh, oh.
0:15
It was from "Road Tasted,"
0:18
and apparently they were served this
0:21
on this show "Road Tasted."
0:23
They had such a good time filming that show.
0:25
You know, they'd just travel all over the United States.
0:30
And apparently someone prepared this for 'em
0:37
or served it in their restaurant
0:40
'cause they didn't go to individual homes, you know,
0:42
they went into businesses.
0:44
So, and I don't even know if I even told y'all
0:48
the name of it, but it's called Apple Bacon Cornbread.
0:53
And I'm sauteing these apples in a little bacon fat
0:59
that we rendered from frying the bacon.
1:01
So it, this is gonna be very interesting.
1:04
I need to saute those for about five minutes.
1:10
My boys didn't tell me whether to peel,
1:16
whether to cut these in strips.
1:19
As far as their recipe goes,
1:22
I could have just put the two apples in the pan
1:26
'cause it just called for two Granny Smith apples.
1:30
All right.
1:33
So we'll be editing this
1:34
so y'all don't have to sit through all the little things
1:41
that take a minute.
1:46
Right, Pumpkin?
1:47
Okay, we got our apples going.
1:50
And the instructions say to saute those
1:53
for about five minutes.
1:55
And while, while those are cooking,
2:00
I'm gonna go ahead and put all my dry ingredients together.
2:04
And there will be a link giving you
2:09
the exact amount of the ingredients.
2:14
But it's flour, a yellow corn meal, sugar,
2:25
baking powder, salt, baking soda, and pepper.
2:40
So there we go.
2:41
I'm using the whisk because it's almost like I've sifted it.
2:46
You know, when you use this little thing right here,
2:48
it's great.
2:51
All right, I wanna not forget about my apples over here.
3:00
Oh, speaking of apples, y'all.
3:05
Last night for dinner,
3:09
I just wanted something in fattening,
3:12
you know, really fattening.
3:14
So I said, "Do I sit down and drink a cup of,
3:16
"eat a cup of mayonnaise or 10 pounds of french fries?"
3:21
I just had to have something that was sinfully good.
3:25
And I made fried apple pies.
3:30
They were so delicious, y'all.
3:34
Oh, yeah, there's three left.
3:36
I got up and had one for breakfast.
3:40
Oh my goodness.
3:42
They are so yummy.
3:45
And I sent Michael to the store to get me puff pastry sheets
3:52
and he came back with puff pastry tart shells.
3:56
And I said, "Michael, you weren't listening to me
3:58
"when I told you what to pick me up, what I'd need."
4:05
So he said, "Well, I just saw those
4:09
"and it said puff pastry."
4:12
So I said, "I'll make it work."
4:14
Well, the next time I do fried pies,
4:17
I am not gonna get the sheets, I'm gonna get the tarts
4:21
because they're individual, and I just,
4:24
all I had to do was put some flower down
4:27
and roll 'em into circles.
4:29
It was so easy.
4:31
So puff pastry makes the best fried pies, y'all.
4:37
And before that, let me tell you what I cooked.
4:41
I had had some shrimp and grits that I cooked Friday night.
4:46
Thank goodness Eddie put the shrimp,
4:52
I meant the grits in a container
4:55
and put 'em in the refrigerator.
4:57
And I don't save grits 'cause they're so hard to, you know,
5:00
get 'em smooth again.
5:01
And I'd just rather start from scratch.
5:04
Well, so I said, "I'm not cooking any grits."
5:09
And I pulled out that container of those grits
5:12
and they were like that thick.
5:15
So I took my biscuit cutter and went in there and cut 'em.
5:19
And of course they were like this thick.
5:20
So I sliced them again and I got me up three bowls.
5:25
I got my flour, my eggs with a little of my hot sauce in it,
5:29
and panko bread crumbs.
5:39
And I dipped them in the flour, then the egg,
5:42
and then into the panko.
5:44
And I fried 'em and served that shrimp and grits over those.
5:51
It was so good, y'all, it hurt me.
5:54
It was so good.
5:55
- [Teresa] So between your fried grits
5:57
and your apple pie.
5:58
- I did it.
6:00
I did it.
6:01
I got my fattening on.
6:03
(laughing)
6:05
Okay, I think these are about ready.
6:07
These are starting to turn a little brown.
6:10
Oh, yeah.
6:12
So, you know, I told Michael
6:16
the next time I cook shrimp and grits for us
6:19
I'm gonna fry the grits instead of,
6:22
you know, doing them like normal.
6:25
'Cause they are just, that crunch.
6:28
That crunch was so good.
6:30
All right, so I've got buttermilk here.
6:36
I've got melted butter.
6:40
Ola!
6:41
- [Michael] Hey.
6:42
- Oh, that's Mikey.
6:45
Are you hungry?
6:46
You must be hungry.
6:47
You coming home?
6:48
- [Michael] No, I gotta go pick up Johnny.
6:50
- Oh, okay.
6:51
I moved it off the fire I think, Teresa.
6:55
All right, now I've got my melted butter,
7:02
and that was five tablespoons.
7:07
And now I've got my two eggs.
7:11
And, ooh, look at that.
7:16
I like it.
7:17
I was just telling everybody, Michael,
7:19
about our dinner last night.
7:21
I just wanted something in fattening so bad.
7:24
Felt like I hadn't, well, I guess that carrot cake,
7:28
that shouldn't, that carrot cake was mmm.
7:33
So in goes the buttermilk, the butter, and eggs.
7:41
- [Michael] So what are you cooking?
7:42
- I am making a recipe from the boys.
7:49
It's Apple Bacon Cornbread if you'd like to hang around.
7:55
- Okay. - All right,
7:56
now I'm gonna pour it, ouch!
7:58
That cast iron pot gets hot.
8:01
All right, now I'm gonna fold my eggs and my bacon and.
8:08
(laughing)
8:11
- Did she make them? - I thought
8:12
it was the microwave, yeah.
8:14
- [Paula] Oh, one apple left.
8:16
All right.
8:21
All right, so it goes the apples.
8:24
- [Michael] Is this extra bacon?
8:26
- Do we need that for this, Teresa?
8:28
There's a couple pieces of bacon over there.
8:31
- [Teresa] I think it's,
8:32
I think you're fine to take a piece.
8:34
- I don't have to put any on top or anything, do I?
8:37
- [Teresa] No.
8:41
- Okay, now I'm gonna put this in the oven
8:47
and I'm gonna bake it in this same pan
8:50
that I sauteed the apples in
8:53
and hope it doesn't stick.
8:55
- [Teresa] Yeah, oh, it says 425.
8:57
For 25 to 30 minutes. - No, we can't.
8:58
- [Teresa] For 25 to 30 minutes.
8:59
That seems quite high.
9:00
- Yeah, we can't do that, Teresa, with our oven
9:02
because we have a commercial one, a commercial oven.
9:06
And, you know, in the restaurants
9:08
you gotta have a powerful oven.
9:10
And I got so used to cooking on that, y'all,
9:13
that I have to have one here at my house.
9:15
I can't bake on a regular oven.
9:17
So. - Yeah,
9:19
I put it on 350 commercial.
9:21
- Yes, and we'll just, we'll have to watch it.
9:24
- [Teresa] But would you normally,
9:25
per the recipe it says 425.
9:27
That just seems high to me.
9:28
- Well, in a, on a normal, in a normal oven, a house oven,
9:33
it would be all right, but.
9:37
- Guess since- - I'm gonna need some help
9:38
holding this bowl, please.
9:42
Gosh, it's so heavy.
9:45
- [Teresa] Hold up, please.
9:45
- Okay, maybe I can do it.
9:47
Oh, thank you.
9:52
Okay.
9:55
I can't wait to try this.
9:57
(timer buzzing)
9:59
- I don't know why that,
10:01
Michael, can you turn off that timer for me, please?
10:05
On the oven, 'cause it's not gonna turn off.
10:09
That's the only thing-
10:10
- I think I got everything.
10:10
I can't see.
10:12
I'm very excited about trying Jamie and Bobby's cornbread.
10:19
A recipe that they had the privilege of eating
10:25
when they were on the road doing Dean Brothers.
10:36
What was the exact title?
10:38
- "Road Tasted." - "Road Tasted," yes.
10:40
I knew it wasn't, didn't sound right,
10:41
what was coming outta my mouth.
10:47
Okay.
10:51
- [Teresa] Yum.
10:53
And it's cooked perfect.
10:54
- Uh-huh, it's just a steaming.
10:58
See the steam?
11:02
Oh my gosh, this couldn't come out at a better time.
11:06
I'm so hungry.
11:09
Mm.
11:11
A lot of people like sweet corn bread.
11:16
So I think y'all might like this one.
11:27
Mm.
11:29
- [Teresa] Don't burn your mouth.
11:32
- Mm.
11:39
It's really good.
11:44
I would not expect apples to be in my cornbread,
11:48
but it's very, very good.
11:50
Have you tasted it, Teresa?
11:53
I know you hadn't, have you, Eddie?
11:55
- [Eddie] No.
11:57
- Huh?
11:58
- [Eddie] No, I haven't.
12:02
- Mmm.
12:05
The bacon and the apple.
12:09
Mmm.
12:10
- [Teresa] You could do honey butter on that.
12:12
- Yeah.
12:16
- [Teresa] Or as Jamie says, cane syrup.
12:18
- Yes, Jamie loves cane syrup on everything.
12:21
Well, thank you, guys, for tossing that your mama's way.
12:27
I'm very happy to share it with all my friends out there.
12:32
So until next time.
