Bennett Groover's class. And we are

at the Sanctuary Children's Learning Center and Development.

And these children have been waiting for some eggs to hatch.

They are going to raise little chickens,

and they have them in an incubator right now.

They've got the thermometer in there.

We can see it's 100 degrees in there

and all different kinds of eggs from different chickens.

And they will all start hatching on Friday.

It's important that that light be on

because that's keeping those eggs

the perfect temperature because they don't have

a mama chicken to sit on them and keep them warm.

So we have to use the light in place of the mama chicken.

I lived in this house where we had a great big-

We called it the "Chick Inn."

- And a rainbow!

- Yes, and they would go up in their little house

and lay their eggs,

and they would go up there to sleep at night.

But during the day, they stayed in their pen.

- [Ashley] So this was the house they would go in to sleep.

- [Ginny] Look, they were so sweet. They loved for me to-

and scratch their little ears.

And it would just almost put 'em to sleep.

They'd close their eyes and just let me scratch.

And Bennet's papa is a harbor pilot here in Savannah.

Do you know the big ships that come up the river?

Well, Bennet's papa is on one of those ships,

and he brings it in, and he parks it.

- Just like your daddy.

- And Bennet's daddy is on the tug boat

that helps Papa push those big ships in.

if we had any left.

And the only thing that I ever took out there

and gave them that they would not touch was pasta salad.

I thought, 'Maybe they'll like pasta,' but they didn't.

But they- You know what they loved?

They loved for you to go buy a bunch of mealworms

- or a, yes, a bunch of mealworms

or a bucket of crickets.

- Oh, they loved pecking at crickets because they'd hop,

and those chickens, they just loved going around,

and hopping and eating those crickets.

- But we fed them a mixture of food

that we got from the hardware store.

And do you know what else these chickens need?

- [Student] An incubator.

- Yes, when they're first born, they sure do.

But after they get big and have all their feathers,

they need to eat some oyster shells.

- [Student] Eww, oyster shells are yucky.

I don't want oyster shells.

- How do you know? Have you ever eaten one?

- [Ginny] You ate oyster shells?

So, when I say they need oyster shells,

it's not like the whole shell.

The factory grinds them up,
