hey y'all welcome to another episode of
0:02
what's cooking with Paula Deen and the
0:05
other day I did some tips over recipes
0:08
that I've made through the years that
0:10
people seem to like so I've just tried
0:13
to give you some hints and tips maybe
0:17
that I didn't have time to give you
0:19
during the show so I heard that y'all
0:22
enjoyed it so we're gonna do this again
0:24
and today I'm gonna go through making a
0:28
cake with you that was just so much fun
0:32
to make I had been home to Albany
0:34
Georgia we celebrated my best friend's
0:37
Mother's like 94th birthday and this
0:39
young lady from Albany had made
0:41
ring-ring this beautiful cake and when
0:44
you sliced it it was like all different
0:46
colors all throughout the layers and I
0:50
thought it was so pretty so I said well
0:52
I wanted to show this to all my friends
0:54
out there and try my hand at it to see
0:58
if I could do it well I did it and it
1:00
was so much fun so I want to walk
1:03
through with y'all how easy this
1:06
beautiful interesting rainbow of a cake
1:09
how easy it was to do all right now you
1:12
can start with a box cake mix if you
1:15
like oh or you can make your your cake
1:19
from scratch which I really like this
1:21
from scratch cake but the the
1:25
instructions that I'm gonna give you
1:27
today is just a basic yellow cake and
1:31
we're gonna start with two sticks of
1:33
butter that have been brought to room
1:36
temperature two cups of sugar 4 eggs 3
1:42
cups of self-rising flour a cup of milk
1:46
vanilla extract and a teaspoon of almond
1:50
extract so we're gonna cream my butter
1:53
which we brought to room temperature
1:56
we're gonna cream it until it's nice and
1:58
creamy and then we're gonna add our
2:01
sugar to our our beet butter and we're
2:06
gonna whip those together until they're
2:08
nice and creamy and smooth and
2:12
that'll take you know maybe five to
2:16
eight minutes but you'll want to cream
2:17
it well and then we're slowly gonna add
2:21
an egg one at the time and if you're
2:25
using an electric mixer it's so
2:27
important that you have you a spatula
2:29
that you can stop your motor that you
2:33
can cut off your machine lift your
2:35
beaters up and make sure you scrape
2:37
around that bow real good because you'll
2:41
want to make sure all that's
2:43
incorporated so we've got our three cups
2:46
of self-rising flour and our one cup of
2:50
milk on the counter now we're gonna
2:52
start adding our flour and milk and
2:55
we're gonna begin with flour and we're
2:58
gonna end with flour and I can't tell
3:01
you why but I know that's the way you're
3:05
supposed to do it
3:06
it makes for a creamier smoother black
3:09
up batter when you start and end with
3:13
flour so I'll scoop up maybe a heaping
3:19
fourth of a cup full and I'll put that
3:22
in my creamed mixture and I'll beat that
3:26
and then I'll cut off my my mixer and
3:29
I'll go around with my spatula scraping
3:31
all that goodI down so it gets all in
3:35
the beaters of your your mixer so I'll
3:39
do that until I have used all the milk
3:42
and all the flour mixture and then
3:49
you'll want to take a teaspoon or two of
3:53
vanilla extract now I always use the
3:56
real thing it's just easier and it
4:01
tastes so much better it's a little bit
4:03
more expensive but it's worth it do you
4:06
Sapir enough vanilla extract versus an
4:12
artificial vanilla flavoring and then
4:16
I'll add in a teaspoon of almond
4:19
flavoring and you want to mix that just
4:22
to learn it's incorporated and then
4:25
we're
4:25
gonna divide our batter we've got three
4:28
9-inch cake pans and I always take me
4:33
wax paper and I'll lay my pan on top of
4:38
the wax paper and I'll go around the
4:40
edges with my scissors because I want to
4:44
I don't want my cake to stick to the
4:48
pans I want it to come out perfectly so
4:53
I'll cut me a piece of wax paper for
4:55
each of my pans and I will use a baking
5:00
spray to spray around the edges and the
5:04
bottom and then I'll put my wax paper on
5:07
it the spray helps your wax paper from
5:12
moving around on you so I've got my
5:14
three pans prepared I've sprayed them
5:16
and I put the the wax paper down on the
5:21
bottom of each of them so they my cakes
5:24
won't stick there is nothing worse than
5:26
spending your time and money and then
5:29
your cake stick I've had it happen and
5:32
it's not fun the space that you live in
5:37
really affects the way you feel so my
5:40
first recommendation is start by

or call one eight hundred six five nine
6:24
3300 that's one eight hundred six five
6:27
nine 3300
6:32
all right now here comes the fun part we
6:35
are going to take our batter and we're
6:39
going to pour it into four separate
6:41
bowls and try to try to mix it evenly as
6:47
you can try to separate that batter of
6:51
cake mix into four equal portions
6:56
so then we're going to use I have found
7:00
that I love the gel food coloring Jol
7:02
they are really vibrant in their color
7:08
so you'll want to mix up your favorite
7:12
colors naturally a red a green a blue
7:15
and I love the purple color the purple
7:21
it just reminds me of an Easter egg I
7:23
just love the vibrant color of purple so
7:27
we're gonna color each of our bowls of
7:30
batter and then we're going to take our
7:33
cake pan and we're gonna spoon out a big
7:37
dollop of batter say a purple batter and
7:46
on top of that we're going to choose
7:49
another color say green and we're gonna
7:53
put a spoonful of the green right into
7:56
the middle of our perfect alright and
7:59
we're gonna put that right in the middle
8:01
of our purple and you can see as we add
8:05
cake mix to your circle that it's
8:09
eventually gonna make it to the edge of
8:12
your pan alright so we've got our purple
8:15
down we've put a big dollop of say green
8:19
down alright on our next one we're gonna
8:23
use a big ol scoop of say pink what the
8:27
color of my sweat sweater it's gonna
8:30
look like beautiful mush strawberries
8:33
and each time that layer of cake is
8:37
gonna move closer and closer to the edge
8:40
until we have got enough
8:43
batter in there to make a nice fat layer
8:47
and then we're gonna go to our second
8:49
pan and do it the same way but you can
8:53
mix up your colors you can start with a
8:56
yellow or a blue or a green or a purple
9:01
whatever color you want and then just
9:04
keep spooning batter on top of batter
9:06
and you'll watch your batter spread out
9:09
in that pan and when you take out of the
9:11
oven and cut into it it's gonna have all
9:14
these beautiful rainbow colors in it so
9:18
we're gonna bake that in a preheated 350
9:21
degree oven but about 20 to 25 minutes
9:24
and there's a few ways that you can tell
9:28
if your cake is done you can put your
9:30
finger in the center of it and if it
9:33
springs back then you know your cake is
9:36
done and also a good way to tell is when
9:42
your cake is done your cake will pull
9:44
away from the sides of the pan and you
9:46
can very easily see that so you'll want
9:50
to take this your cake pants out of your
9:53
oven and you'll want to let them rest
9:56
but just a couple of minutes and then I
9:58
always have a rack that that is actually
10:05
in three pieces it's was like an
10:07
accordion it will close up or open up so
10:11
I opened my up my rack up and I take
10:16
each cake and turn it out of the pan and
10:20
put it on the rack on my cooling rack
10:24
and you'll want to let it cool
10:26
completely to room temperature because
10:31
once we iced it you know if the cake is
10:34
warm then it'll melt our icing all right
10:37
so we've got our icing made and that's
10:39
two cups of butter at room temperature
10:41
and four cups of confectioner's sugar
10:45
beat together and you'll want to add
10:48
probably 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk to
10:50
just get it to spreading consistency but
10:53
a little milk goes a long way with
10:55
confectioner sugar so you'll want to be
10:57
real real careful now that we've gotten
10:59
it beat up well we'll want to add a
11:02
teaspoon and a half maybe a vanilla
11:05
flavoring or a little almond flavoring I
11:11
usually use a teaspoon of vanilla and a
11:15
teaspoon of almond so your cake is is
11:20
ready to frost and your children your
11:25
grandchildren they are gonna just love
11:28
slicing into that cake but you know what
11:31
they'll love even more is helping you
11:34
make the cake because it really is fun
11:38
watching all those vibrant gel food
11:42
colorings work together I hope y'all
11:45
like it and I hope this is maybe a
11:46
little easier for you but you gotta make
11:49
that cake the space that you live in
11:52
