hey y'all welcome to what's cooking with
0:02
Paula Dean and uh if y'all will remember
0:06
a few weeks ago we had a terrible
0:08
tragedy up in the Great Smokies um
0:12
couple of young men were found
0:15
responsible for starting a fire up
0:18
around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge and
0:22
um you know we we have we have three
0:25
businesses up there and uh so we've got
0:30
a piece of our heart up there in
0:33
Tennessee and everybody knows that Dolly
0:36
Parton is from Seville she was born and
0:39
raised and
0:41
um she has Dollywood which is located
0:45
right over a a mountain from the island
0:49
at Pigeon Forge and so Dolly held a ton
0:55
to help these people because a lot of
0:57
people lost their homes we were so
1:00
fortunate the fire got put under control
1:03
before it got down to the Main Street on
1:05
Gatlinburg I don't know if you
1:07
remember uh you know how the
1:10
main the the main strip is right there
1:15
on the highway so thank goodness it got
1:19
put under control before it reached all
1:21
the businesses but I got a call wanting
1:24
to know if I was
1:26
um willing to come help with a ton along
1:29
with my sons Jamie and Bobby so we said
1:33
we would just adore to come up so we
1:37
came up and we answered
1:39
phones and uh we had a good time didn't
1:42
we Bobby it was I mean yes it was a
1:45
great time it's sad that you know that
1:48
it happened and a lot of people were uh
1:51
affected by the fires and people lost
1:52
their lives and it's really incredible
1:54
that something like CU you know we were
1:55
we were know we were just in um
1:58
Gatlinburg and pige for a couple of days
2:00
before the fire started and everything
2:02
was normal and you just you never know
2:04
from one day to the next how things can
2:06
happen so um Dolly Parton being a a a
2:10
you know obviously a huge well-known
2:12
member of that Community when she put
2:14
out the call for people to come help it
2:16
really was uh an incredible outpouring
2:20
of support from just every artist and
2:23
public person that you can imagine in
2:25
Nashville got together and we were um I
2:28
felt pretty honored to be invited to go
2:31
up and help and we did and we went to uh
2:34
Dolly's little um not little it was a it
2:37
was a tell a a Production Studio there
2:40
um and we pulled into the place and it
2:43
was just unbelievable all these tour
2:45
buses and just anybody that you can
2:48
think of from Nashville uh everybody
2:50
who's anybody just walking around inside
2:52
this studio and doing everything that
2:54
they could to help and we were sitting
2:55
you know shoulder to- shoulder at the at
2:57
the telephone Bank there answering uh um
3:00
phone calls with you know me and and Lee
3:03
Greenwood were sitting side by side a
3:05
bunch of the Tennessee Titans my brother
3:06
Jamie was there uh one one of the Larry
3:11
Gatlin I think I was sitting next to
3:13
Larry Gatlin he was on one side of me
3:16
and then over here was um
3:21
Todd
3:22
slower
3:26
Todd Chrisley
3:28
Chrisley I couldn't I was wanting to say
3:31
Presley but it's not so sitting on this
3:33
side of me was Todd and Julie crley and
3:36
they are so funny and so we had a good
3:40
time just frat anzing with each other
3:43
and talking in between phone calls but
3:45
once the phone started R phone calls
3:48
there was no between phone calls they
3:50
constantly rang it was hard work it took
3:53
hours a minute uh but my very first call
3:57
y'all I got from a m man that owns the
4:00
shies in Knoxville which is just down
4:04
the road and he uh he donated
4:09
$20,000 I think so that was that was
4:12
thrilling but a lot probably most of
4:14
them were $25
4:17
$50 but uh Dolly has um got such a
4:22
wonderful heart she's such a good person
4:26
and she is ever so faith to her
4:31
roots and um so everybody was just
4:34
thrilled to come help her it was very
4:37
touching to answer the phones I had more
4:40
than a few people that were um that were
4:45
um sad and would apologize that they
4:48
couldn't give more you know I can only
4:49
give $5 I can only give $10 I'm sorry I
4:52
can't give more I mean that really will
4:54
tug it and that was as
4:57
important that was as important is that
5:00
$20,000 contribution I got because the
5:04
those those people I mean they were
5:07
giving it from their heart from their
5:09
heart the space that you live in really
5:13
affects the way you feel so my first

6:00
3300 that's 1 800 659
6:04
3300 did you did you uh ever hear what
6:08
the final number was Bobby I think that
6:12
people are still given you know we're a
6:13
few weeks out it wasn't just a one night
6:16
event I think that you could probably
6:17
call and still donate because there were
6:19
a lot of families affect a lot of people
6:20
lost their homes and all their Poss a
6:22
lot of homes L but it was pretty quickly
6:25
like a day after the telephone I heard
6:27
had heard or10 million had been that's
6:30
great yeah and those people up there
6:32
they love Dolly Parton so much and uh
6:37
when she calls they they answer yep it
6:40
was just it was a terrible combination
6:41
of things the Tennessee Valley and uh
6:44
Georgia and Alabama the whole Southeast
6:46
has been in a tremendous drought for not
6:48
just this year but the last couple years
6:50
everything's really dry you know it
6:52
could just be a couple of kids out there
6:54
playing and and and it got out of hand
6:56
and it just turned into something
6:58
horrible but how fortunate we are to to
7:00
have been able to uh be a part of the
7:02
recovery process and for Dolly to be
7:04
able to to put that together but well we
7:07
we were up there like November the 27th
7:10
and
7:11
28th uh to turn on the Christmas tree
7:14
lights and you and
7:17
I came home
7:21
early Sunday
7:23
morning and Saturday night I was in the
7:26
car with uh gosh I think it was Tim and
7:30
Eddie Ed Tim was driving us around and I
7:33
said I looked I glanced up at the top of
7:36
the mountain I said y'all there's there
7:39
it looks like a fire up there and I said
7:42
it looks like a two-story house is on
7:45
fire because you could see the fire on
7:47
the ground level and then there was a
7:50
spot where there was no fire and then
7:53
there was fire up higher so it was like
7:58
uh it looked L like it was a
8:00
house now this was Saturday night uh
8:04
Sunday morning we left everything was
8:07
fine by the time I got home and cut on
8:10
the
8:13
news they were a blaze well it was uh
8:17
you know they had 80 mph winds coming
8:19
through there too the day the fires got
8:21
lit so it was just it was a perfect
8:22
combination of a drought and the wrong
8:24
weather came through but it was a
8:26
perfect storm and then fortunately some
8:28
rain came came in and and helped out the
8:30
firefighters but it's just a it's a
8:32
terrible sad situation but we were able
8:35
to be a part of something positive from
8:37
it and and hopefully um you know we did
8:39
a lot of good I think the main message
8:43
that Dolly wanted to get out to all the
8:44
people was
8:47
for those of us out there that wanted to
8:50
do something to help the main thing we
8:53
could do is go visit the area to help
8:57
the merchants get back on their feet
8:59
beat after almost a week of being down
9:03
and out of business so y'all please put
9:06
Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg on your
9:10
calendar to go visit uh I promise you
9:13
won't be disappointed and he'll really
9:16
be doing something good for that
9:18
area thanks for joining us today the
