hey y'all welcome to what's cooking with
0:03
Paula Deen but today it's welcome to
0:06
what's cooking with Michael and Paula
0:08
hey Michael okay how are you good good
0:13
huh I'm good good good I'm good we're
0:19
all good
0:19
mm-hmm you know what I want to talk
0:22
about today tell me I want to talk about
0:25
a one-pot wonder that I do do you
0:28
remember when Diane Tedder and Marilyn
0:30
Milson came to spend a few days with us
0:34
you know and you took us crabbing uh-huh
0:36
oh my gosh you turned those girls into
0:40
two of the happiest girls doing
0:42
something so simple as string crab and
0:46
they had a ball and when I talked to
0:50
them they they're still talking about
0:52
you taking them crabbing and they want
0:54
to go again so badly when Diane and
0:57
Marilyn come to visit Marilyn always
1:00
wants to cook at least one dinner meal
1:03
for us so she chose this dish to prepare
1:10
for dinner for us and it was delicious I
1:14
don't know you do really do remember and
1:17
let me tell you how easy it is you just
1:20
go buy you a four to six pound chuck
1:24
roast and I wouldn't use any other kind
1:27
but chuck chuck roast is the cheaper of
1:31
the roast and it's definitely the best
1:33
and you just rub it with a teaspoon of
1:37
salt pepper and a teaspoon of garlic
1:40
powder and I like to cook mine in my
1:44
multicooker because my multicooker is a
1:48
stovetop cooker
1:51
stay it steams it keeps it on warm it's
1:54
slow cooks I can actually even fry and
1:59
in my multicooker so I love using that
2:02
so after I've rubbed all my seasoning on
2:05
my roast I turn it on high and I Brown
2:10
it off right there and then
2:13
Sok is crazy simple you get one package
2:18
of like brown demi-glaze package you
2:23
know in the section at the grocery store
2:25
where they have all these different
2:27
seasonings you know my meatloaf for
2:29
chili you find it right there and then
2:32
you take one envelope of ranch dressing
2:36
mix and pour that those two things all
2:40
over your roast then you lay a stick of
2:44
butter on top of that roast and then you
2:48
take a jar of pepper Chaney peppers
2:52
they're the light green peppers that are
2:54
about that long and they're there's
2:56
really no heat to them right once in a
2:59
while once in a while I'll get hold of
3:02
one that may have a little heat but very
3:04
very little and I just put like a does
3:08
and a pepper Chaney's all over it put
3:12
the lid on it and let it cook for like
3:14
six hours and it's incredible of a rice
3:18
y'all just incredible and even though we
3:23
hadn't put a speck of liquid into our
3:27
pot the roast is covered in a liquid and
3:32
it's so good all you have to do is turn
3:36
your cooker back up and bring it to a
3:38
bowl and thicken your gravy with a
3:41
little corn starch and water mixed
3:43
together it's heavenly
3:46
isn't it yeah I love it the best that
3:49
package of demi-glaze just gives it the
3:53
richest beefy taste and oh you talk
3:58
about your house smelling good YUM and
4:02
they're so easy
4:03
I appreciate Maryland sharing that
4:05
recipe with me another time I can't
4:08
remember what she cooked but it didn't
4:13
beat this no it's my favorite that she
4:17
cooks mm-hmm
4:18
Marilyn also shared with me a recipe
4:21
years ago that I think it's the best I
4:24
have ever tasted and that's
4:27
potato soup mm-hmm she makes a killer
4:31
potato soup I could live off suit I know
4:34
you could I know you could we're having
4:38
a white bean soup for dinner tonight
4:41
well good my cousin your cousin is home
4:48
cooking it right now as we speak perfect
4:52
and I thought maybe you could make the
4:55
cornbread okay I'll do it
4:57
no Don wants me to make he went to the
5:01
store and got some okra he wants me to
5:05
slice that okra real world thing and put
5:09
my ho cake batter and make us okra
5:11
hoecakes I'll be good maybe jalapenos
5:15
you yeah yeah Oh we'll have to stop by
5:19
the store we can do that all right well
5:22
let's take a quick break and get our
5:24
heads together on what we're gonna do
5:27
okay okay you're still looking at me
5:31

6:15
noble.com slash Paula that Smith &
6:19
noble.com slash Paula or call one eight
6:23
hundred six five nine
6:25
and 3300 that's one eight hundred
6:27
sixty-five nine thirty three hundred hey
6:34
y'all welcome back to what's cooking
6:36
with Paula Deen and her husband Michael
6:39
groover today yeah so I was just telling
6:42
y'all that my cousin Don is home cooking
6:46
it's like white bean soup with a bunch
6:49
of ham just smoked ham in it and it's
6:52
gonna be so good and we can't have that
6:54
without having some cornbread so Don
6:58
wants me to make the lace oak cake with
7:01
the real thin sliced okra in it right
7:05
now I can make that kind and which is
7:08
one and a half cups of plain white
7:11
cornmeal you add a teaspoon of salt and
7:15
two cups of water and you'll want your
7:18
batter and course you'll need a hoe cake
7:21
pan a hoe pan is about that big and the
7:27
sides just go up just a little bit and
7:30
it's cast iron in order to make a
7:33
lace-up cake you must have that pan it
7:37
almost looks like a griddle with a
7:39
little oil just a little yep you'll need
7:42
a good bit of oil because I all my
7:46
skillet real good and like I said you'll
7:50
want your batter so thin that when you
7:53
pour it when you pour your batter onto
7:56
your hot skillet and it but it'll become
8:01
like lace around the edges it doesn't it
8:04
doesn't look like it's thick enough it
8:05
looks like water almost uh-huh it's not
8:08
much thicker than than water and it
8:12
takes forever
8:13
lace Oh cakes to cook y'all which seems
8:17
crazy it doesn't seem logical but a
8:20
self-rising hoe cake like we serve at
8:24
the restaurants cook very very quickly
8:26
they look like little pancakes uh-huh
8:28
just a real like almost a crepe right
8:33
but so good and you have to cook them
8:37
over like medium-high
8:39
eat and you have to keep an eye on them
8:41
I've got my grandmother's good spatula
8:43
then I can get around there and if I
8:47
have to I add a little bit more all to
8:49
it and then I flip it and cook it real
8:54
good on the other side so that's what
8:56
but I add sliced real paper thin sliced
9:01
okra slices into the hoecake and that's
9:06
what Don wants for dinner so but I get
9:09
you to do jalapeno is also okay now
9:11
we'll do some jalapenos and I got
9:13
another cornbread y'all that's real real
9:16
good the corny cornbread I know y'all
9:19
have all eaten that so I can make this
9:22
too and only me as y'all is a cup and a
9:24
half of self-rising cornmeal and I like
9:28
white
9:28
I'm usually stick with a white cornmeal
9:30
and 3/4 a cup of self-rising flour and a
9:35
cup of grated cheddar cheese a little 8
9:39
ounce can of creamed corn 8 ounces of
9:43
cream cheese you know a half a cup of
9:50
vegetable oil 2 diced jalapenos
9:54
I put al opinions in this one and 2 eggs
9:57
so you you'll want to make sure that
10:01
your your cream cheese is at room
10:03
temperature but in a large bowl combine
10:06
all the ingredients and stir well heat a
10:10
well-oiled large skillet cast-iron
10:14
skillet and a 375 degree oven for about
10:18
10 minutes now you just pour your batter
10:22
into the hot skillet and return to the
10:24
oven and bake until golden brown
10:27
approximately 30 minutes so if you're
10:31
making individual size cornbread in
10:34
smaller pans they will require a shorter
10:38
cooking time but that's a wonderful
10:40
wonderful thought that is this what you
10:44
cook that uh the lady insulins when they
10:45
first open Michael it was yeah it was
10:50
very close to the other
10:52
so good mm-hmm oh we had the best corn
10:55
muffins in the whole world
10:56
the lady in sons when we started opening
10:59
every night for dinner I just didn't
11:02
have room to have somebody taking up
11:05
half the stove frying hoecakes
11:09
so I said okay I'll serve a wonderful
11:11
corn muffin so I think I think that is
11:16
the if that's not it it's very close to
11:20
that they were delicious they were they
11:24
were and it much easier to make to serve
11:28
a big crowd but you can't eat you can't
11:34
eat those white beans without corn bread
11:36
no no and some chopped onion I'm ready
11:40
mm me too I'm right hungry well thank
11:47
you for being with me today it was good
11:48
to be with you okay so before we go tell
11:52
me your favorite corn bread favorite
11:55
corn bread would be the corn muffins you
11:58
make with jalapenos and real corn name
12:01
you know well how about tonight
12:04
for dinner I'll make Don and me a lace
12:07
okay can I'll make you though I do like
12:09
the lace okay especially when I'm
12:10
