0:03
All right y'all, I'm glad to see you came back. (laughing)
0:10
I'm putting on these gloves
0:11
because I love my grandma's red velvet cake,
0:15
but it calls for food coloring.
0:17
So I'm gonna put these gloves on
0:19
just to make sure I don't have red hands when I'm through.
0:23
All right, we're gonna start with two sticks
0:27
and two cups of sugar.
0:32
And we're just gonna beat these up
0:33
until they're smooth.
0:34
And then I'm gonna be adding one egg and a time.
0:54
All right, I'm gonna come over here now.
0:57
I've got two and a half cups of cake flour.
1:00
I'm gonna add two tablespoons of cocoa to our flour.
1:04
And I'm just gonna kind of stir those together.
1:09
And right here I have a half a teaspoon
1:12
of baking soda and a tablespoon of vinegar.
1:18
And you can see how that foamed up,
1:21
the reaction of the two ingredients.
1:26
All right, I'm gonna make sure
1:27
that these are stirred up well together.
1:30
I'm gonna pour that in there.
1:34
And now I'm gonna start adding
1:37
the flour and the cocoa alternately
1:41
So this works very, very well.
2:02
And the last bit of flour and cocoa.
2:09
Now you can see that the color of our batter
2:11
is a light, light chocolate.
2:14
Just two tablespoons of cocoa
2:16
changed the color of it that much.
2:19
Well speaking of color,
2:20
we're really fixing to change that color now.
2:27
I'm gonna do this very, very slowly.
2:38
Okay, now we're ready to divide it up.
2:41
Now I have found that I can do it more consistently
2:46
if I use some type of measuring cup.
2:54
All right now I'm gonna put these
2:56
in a preheated oven at 350 degrees,
2:58
and depending on the size of your cake pan
3:01
will determine how long you're gonna bake 'em.
3:03
But you wanna bake 'em until the center,
3:05
if you touch the center it springs back,
3:08
or till it's ever so slightly
3:09
pulling away from the side of the pan.
3:12
So I've got 'em all ready,
3:13
and I'm gonna put 'em in our oven.
3:15
And you'll make sure that your pans
3:17
don't touch each other.
3:19
You'll wanna give 'em plenty of room
3:23
so that the heat can circulate around your pans.
3:28
All right, well while our cake's baking
3:29
I'm gonna make the icing.
3:31
I've got a one eight ounce package
3:33
of cream cheese that's softened,
3:37
and one stick of softened butter.
3:40
And I'm just gonna cream these two things together.
3:49
And I'm gonna add some marshmallows
3:51
that I just heated and melted in the microwave.
4:01
All right, now I'm gonna add
4:03
one 16-ounce box of powdered sugar.
4:17
All right, now I'm gonna fold in
4:23
a cup of sweetened shredded coconut
4:26
and a cup of chopped pecans.
4:37
All right so we're ready to ice our cake now.
4:40
And you'll wanna make sure when you're making this cake
4:44
and using this frosting
4:45
that your cake is completely cooled
4:49
because if you try to put this on a hot cake
4:51
it will melt the icing
4:53
and you'll have a big mess,
4:56
So our cake is nice and cool.
5:00
I've got my wax paper to keep our edges clean.
5:04
Now I put a little dab of our frosting
5:06
in the center of our cake plate
5:09
because I don't want our cake to move around on us.
5:13
So that will make him stick.
5:26
So I'm just gonna try to divide our frosting
5:29
evenly between these three layers.
5:35
All right and then we're gonna take our next layer.
5:40
And if he gets to leaning,
5:41
don't be afraid to get your fingers in there
5:43
and straighten him back up.
6:17
All right really give this cake
6:20
a festive look at Christmas time,
6:24
a touch of holly and berries
6:28
make it so pretty and so festive.
6:31
Not only is it beautiful,
6:37
My grandma Paul's red velvet cake.
6:40
Look how pretty that looks.
6:50
I was so lucky to have the parents
6:52
and grandparents that I had.
6:55
So I wanna encourage y'all to go to your grandmothers
7:00
and ask them to teach you all that they know
7:03
so that when they have to leave
7:05
the recipes don't have to go with them.
7:09
Until next time America,
7:11
I send you all my love
7:14
from my kitchen to yours.
7:23
Hey, y'all, it's Paula Deen.
